Snowden and Roswell — do you see the link? EVER NOTICED how the juxtaposition of news stories can get your mind going in unexpected directions? While perusing the Internet the other day, I came across stories about Edward Snowden and the fabled Roswell incident. Snowden, as most people in the world know by now, is the NSA whistleblower who outed the monstrous U.S. spy program that was logging and monitoring domestic telephone and Internet communication. The Roswell incident, as may be recalled by a diminishing number of people, happened 66 years ago in early July when many believe, an alien spacecraft crash landed outside Roswell, N.M., and the event was covered up by the U.S. government. What, you may ask, do Snowden and Roswell have in common? Well, other than the claim by certain right-wing conspiracy theorists that Snowden may actually be a descendant of, or at least a cousin of the alien who crashed, it is remarkable the lengths the U.S. government has gone to in an effort to marginalize and minimize the impact of both news stories. Concerning Roswell, authorities at a U.S. air base near Roswell at first put out reports that mentioned a “flying disc” and witnesses reported seeing alien bodies on the desert landscape in the vicinity of the crash. The handlers moved in swiftly, though, and the story soon became the kind of bland, calming misinformation we’ve so often seen from our government. The crash, our government told us, involved a top-secret observation balloon, and the alien bodies were merely dummies manufactured to look like people and then placed in the observation balloon as part of a top-secret experiment. As evidence of both the silliness of any talk about aliens, and the government’s dedication to truth and transparency in its dealings with the public, we were shown pictures of wheeled gurneys bearing large, black plastic body bags. Inside of those bags, we were told, were the dummies, which had to remain secret to avoid revealing government, er, secrets. The pictures, I should note, were most recently trotted out in June 1997,

when the government issued its “Case Closed,” final word on Roswell. Where Snowden is concerned, the government has been acting as though Romney won the 2012 presidential contest, and Washington already has adopted his world-view, which clearly is shaped by self-worship, denial of facts and wishful thinking. Part of that world view, as shown clearly throughout the campaign, is a startling but firmly held belief: “If I appear to believe this obvious falsehood, and trumpet it enough times over the puppet media, everyone else will quickly believe it, too.” Thus President Barack Obama’s initial efforts to act as though the Snowden matter was no big deal, followed by the ongoing rush to convince the world that Snowden is a criminal and, essentially, should be pursued and apprehended on the same level as an international terrorist with blood on his hands. In both cases, following embarrassing flubs by the state in the immediate aftermath of the “incidents,” the government has adopted a hard line and mounted a somewhat hysterical counter attack against those who would treat either case as something to be discussed reasonably and resolved openly and truthfully. In both cases, the truth has suffered mightily at the hands of those who are supposed to be our public representatives and servants. The plain facts, in both cases, should be cited to bring about changes in our thinking about, on the one hand, our relative perch on the universal daisy chain of intelligent species, and on the other hand our belief that our government is our employee and not a raving, security-obsessed bunch of liars and cover-up artists. I don’t know whether the Roswell aliens are for real, or whether Snowden did the U.S. a disservice by revealing the spy program. What I do know, after watching the Punch and Judy show that has characterized government response in both matters, is that I cannot trust my government to tell me what’s really going on.

FILM SUMMER IS THE TIME we tend to turn our brains off and search for superficial entertainment. New Views: Documentaries & Dialogue, a film series co-presented by Aspen Film and the Aspen Institute, fights that urge. The series opens Monday, July 15 with “Blood Brother,” the story of Rocky, a young American man who tries to put meaning in his life by moving to India and working at an orphanage for children with HIV. The film earned two major awards at Sundance. Director Steve Hoover, Rocky’s close friend, will be in attendance for a discussion. Also in the series: “Anita,” about the former Supreme Court law clerk Anita Hill; “Inequality for All,” about the widening economic gap as seen through the eyes of former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich; and “Gasland Part II,” which continues the examination of the controversial exploration for natural gas.

CURRENTEVENTS THEATER PAIGE PRICE has shown what she is capable of off the stage. Over five years as artistic director of Theatre Aspen, Price has built an organization and a facility that have raised the level of theater here dramatically. But Price isn’t only an administrator. She first came to Theatre Aspen as an actor, starring in a 2007 production of the relationship drama “The Last Five Years,” and Theatre Aspen artistic director Paige Price directs the a few years ago directed organization’s production of the revue-style show, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” opening in previews on “Defying Gravity.” Now Thursday, July 11, with additional Price steps fully into the performances through Aug. 17. director’s role, heading a production of “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” The musical might be considered kid’s stuff; it’s based on the “Peanuts” comic strip and runs mostly in the family slot, Friday and Saturday mornings, on Theatre Aspen’s schedule. (It opens with evening showings on Thursday and Friday, July 11-12.) But it has earned significant awards since debuting in 1967, and as Price says, “Man, there are deep messages in there.” She is sure to bring them out.

POPULAR MUSIC A DOZEN YEARS ago, a start-up acoustic band on its first tour pulled into town for a little gig atop Aspen Mountain. Attendance was tiny, and it would be a handful of years before the group visited again, for a show at the Wheeler Opera House that also was sparsely attended. The band could have easily faded away, but this proved to be the little engine that could. Railroad Earth kept chugging, picking up fans — Hobos, they call themselves — from their home state of New Jersey to Colorado, where their following has become especially strong. With a mix of Celtic jams, bluegrass drive, and lyrics that speak touchingly of community, tranquility and the environment, the band has piled up some notable accomplishments — including last year’s Aspen appearance, when they followed a free outdoors show with a sold-out gig at Belly Up. Railroad Earth returns to the club on Sunday, July 14; perhaps they’ll play “Colorado,” written during that first tour.

Had the Arlington Minstrels toured Aspen in 1885, there would have been enough pianos in town to play their nine-piano piece.

ASPEN’S LONG AFFAIR WITH THE PIANO from the early days of San Francisco, heroic piano stories tell of

instruments that survived the tossings and turnings of savage seas and seawater seepage into the bottoms of sailing vessels. Not only do the stories of pianos sent around Cape Horn stand as testimony to American hunger for risk and adventure, but they document the grip that music holds on the human soul. Aspen archived no heroic pianotransportation stories from its mining days, but that isn’t because the city didn’t value music. There is no record of when the first piano arrived in Aspen, but by 1885 the ivory keys to our hearts could be found all around town. While the city boasted of an (inflated) population of only 5,000, pianos abounded in churches, union halls, the opera houses and private residences. Two years before there was a railroad station in Aspen, pianos had to be hauled over the Rockies from the Leadville terminal. Wagons transported tons of Aspen ore to the Leadville station daily, and although a piano is heavier than boxes of books, it is no heavier than a load of rocks. On the return trip, the instruments involved no greater hauling challenges than had the ore

so long as the trip wasn’t made in a rainstorm. By 1885, Aspen had two piano dealers: Turley, Bowles and Arey on Cooper Avenue and Knight-McClure Music Co. (later Knight-Campbell)

pianos. Knight-McClure sold Fischer, and Denver dealers sold Chickering pianos. Knight-McClure grew as the town grew; in the 1890s, they offered a half-dozen brands including Steinway.

During Aspen’s mining years, Webber and Steinway, both located in New York, dominated the higherquality market. Webber pianos, like the ones sold in Aspen, were not

inexpensive, and their transportation charges were worse than today. Webber’s square grand pianos were losing their hold on the market in the 1880s as uprights were less expensive to build. In addition, the insides of a square piano were different from those of the modern grand — almost an upside-down version — and could not project as great a volume. A piano was a luxury then that few could afford, so if you wanted to learn to play, you practiced at your instructor’s home. Professor F.H. Trost (a musician of any standing added the title “professor” to his name) and Miss Nellie McClimont offered lessons and practice at their residences. Pianos in the churches and public halls were in use for lessons and practice at all hours of the day. An advice column from The Aspen Times seems to fit today just as it did then: “‘Half the pianos in this world catch winter colds exactly as we do,’ says the New York Mercury. Alas, the columnist offered no recommendations — neither for pianos nor their human companions — about how to avoid summer colds. Tim Willoughby’s family story parallels Aspen’s. ON AUG. 17, 1889, an article in the Aspen Weekly Times gives an update on the progress of plans to build a Presbyterian church in Aspen (today known as the Community Church), noting that “a subscription is being taken up for the erection of the proposed new Presbyterian church. The greatest encouragement has been met with and the building of the church is now assured. It is to be a fine brick and stone structure, to cost $10,000, and will be an ornament to the city. The subscription list is headed by the following names: H.P. Cowenhoven ($2,500), J.B. Wheeler ($1,000), D.M. Van Hoevenberg ($500), H.S. Beavis ($500), J.H. Devereux ($500), L.W. Shilling ($500), A.A. Beard ($300), and Staats, Hunt & Co. ($100).”

WORDS to DRINK BY

THE ROSÉ REVOLUTION EVERY ONCE IN a while there comes a time when a particular grape, wine region, or style of wine achieves esteem and popularity due to the efforts of a single brand or vintner. It may be marketing muscle, a bold idea or simply the tenacity of a maker that leads the grape, the wine style or the region to be viewed in a new light. One example was Cloudy Bay. Winemaker Kevin Judd and Australian vintner David Hohnen introduced palates around the planet to the grassy, fruit forward wines KELLY J. HAYES from Marlborough, New Zealand, when they created the brand. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc became a sensation and the wine led to New Zealand becoming a major wine exporter. In the 1980s and ’90s, French wine merchant George Duboeuf made Beaujolais a household word when he turned the French tradition of racing the freshest Beaujolais from the vineyards to Paris into a global event. Duboeuf placed his wines on the Concorde supersonic jet, getting them to New York and hosting extravagant parties to celebrate their arrival. The campaign boosted sales and recognition of what was previously a simple vin ordinare. And then there was Piero Antinori, who bucked 600 years of family tradition by blending wines using Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes in defiance of Italian wine law. Tignanello’s success not only changed the rules for Italian wines, it created a new category of wines called “Super-Tuscans” that have been a boon for the region. And now, the wine of the moment is Rosé. While the explosion of Rosé is surely the result of myriad factors, the efforts of Sacha Lichine and the wines he makes in Provence at Château d’Esclans must be acknowledged in any discussion about its increasing popularity. Rosé consumption in the U.S. has spiraled over the last half-decade, with much of the growth coming from overseas. According to the trade

organization Wines of Provence, the Nielson research organization that tracks such things, “U.S. retail sales of imported Rosé wine priced above $12 a bottle grew by 23% on dollars and 28% on volume in 2012. This represents a growth rate more than 15 times that of total retail table wine sales.” The U.S. is the No. 2 Rosé market in the world, trailing only France. And this trend is not expected to wither soon. Sacha Lichine is a Bordeaux-born, New York City-bred, wine savant. The son of the late Alexis Lichine, one of the most influential wine writers and importers of the last century, Sacha has done just about everything there is to do in the wine business. His career has seen him work as a sommelier in Boston (Anthony’s Pier 4), run a Bordeaux house (Château Prieuré Lichine), and open a negociant business (Borvin), selling the best of Bordeaux wines. But in 2006 he took a southeasterly turn and, like Hohnen, Duboeuf and Antinori before him, chose a different track, one that would have a profound effect on a region and a wine style. Sacha purchased and restored a rundown estate about 30 minutes from St. Tropez that was blessed with 80-year-old Grenache vines and began to meticulously make highend Rosé that bucked the current conventions of the wine style. He produced premium products and began selling them with prices to match. Working with Patrick Leon, a legendary Bordeaux winemaker who worked with Baron Phillipe de Rothschild for two decades, Sacha has created a line of world-class wines and diligently marketed them to a high-end clientele. At the low end of the price spectrum is the Whispering Angel label, which sells for around $20 a bottle and has become a darling of America’s finest restaurants’ “by the glass” offerings this summer. The 2011 vintage received a 90-point rating from the Wine Spectator and, according to the Spectator, U.S. imports of Whispering Angel rose to 42,000 cases from 33,000 last year. You can taste Whispering Angel at The Little Nell and the

Harvest time at Château d’Esclans.

Ajax Tavern. At the high end is a wine called “Garrus,” which sells for around $100 a bottle, making it reportedly the highest priced Rosé in the world. Over the last half-dozen years, Paul Chevalier, the National Fine Wine Director for the importer Shaw-Ross, has been coming to the Aspen Food & Wine Classic and pouring the wines of Chateau d’Esclcans. “When we first started, no one knew Whispering Angel or even what Rosé was,” Paul remembered as he poured me a glass for the sixth straight year. “People would hear Rosé and think, ‘White Zinfandel’ or ‘Mateus’ (a Portuguese Rosé popular in the 1970s). Now, because of Sacha’s vision, making wines of quality and pouring them at significant events and influential restaurants, it has become a significant wine.” There is little doubt that the emergence of Rosé to a place of

Join the chefs from Town, the Pullman, Phat Thai and Harman’s Eat & Drink in Denver as well as Jack Rabbit Hill, Woody Creek Distillers and Bonfire Brewing in Eagle for Outstanding in the Field dinner at the AMIEE WHITE Copper Bar Ranch in BEAZLEY Edwards, on Wednesday, July 24. If you’re not familiar, Outstanding in the Field is a culinary adventure that travels around the country setting up their long table in fields, vineyards or beaches. Their mission is to promote local food and get people out to the farm to see where the food is coming from and meet the producers. Diners bring their own plate and, after wandering through the gardens and casually touring the ranch, make their way out to the 144-foot table set simply with a white table cloth, candles and perhaps a wildflower or two. This year Mark Fischer will use produce from Copper Bar Ranch and other local producers to fill guest’s plates. Fischer and former Chef de Cuisine of The Pullman, John Little, recently opened Harman’s in Denver. “It’s always great to cook with all the chefs in a setting such as this,” Fischer said. “We’ll see what’s growing well the week before and design the menu from there.” This year, guests will enjoy five courses paired with wines from Jack Rabbit Hill, spirits from Woody Creek Distillers and brews from Bonfire Brewing. In previous years, Jim Denevan, founder of Outstanding in the Field, has picked a different location for the table. Last year saw it set up in the barn; before that they mowed a big swath out of the field and placed the

table by the small creek that provides the ranch with its water. The first year, the dessert course was paired with a visit from a herd of horses. Kerry Donovan, who manages her family’s ranch and is known for her herd of long-haired Scottish Highland cows, planted her crops with the July event in mind. “I try to stagger the planting of various leaf lettuces and herbs in order to have a crop ready at its peak,” Donovan said. “It is really neat to watch these crops that you have nursed to maturity get transformed by talented chefs into amazing dishes. COMMITTING TO THE ONE CHARACTER WHO MATTERS THEATRE ASPEN’S ‘FULLY COMMITTED’ LAST YEAR, THEATRE Aspen presented “The 39 Steps,” an espionage tale that was mostly about the gimmicks: quick-change sets and costumes, allusions to Hitchcock films, a relentlessly madcap pace. “Fully Committed,” presented in this summer’s Theatre Aspen season, has at least one gimmick in common with “The 39 Steps” — the pronounced use of actors in multiple roles. But Matt Bailey, who stars in “Fully Committed,” says the current show should be looked at in a different way than last

In “Fully Committed,” which opened this past week and shows Thursday and Friday, July 18-19 (with additional performances through Aug. 15), he is learning that the temptations that come with being alone in the spotlight through an entire performance are balanced by a responsibility. “That’s an actor’s dream in a way

year’s presentation. “Fully Committed” has one big gimmick — Bailey plays every one of the show’s dozens of characters — but it’s not about the gimmick. To Bailey, the show, written by Becky Mode and directed here by Theatre Aspen veteran Jay Sandrich, is about one character: Sam, an actor stuck for the moment in a difficult job in a four-star restaurant. “It’s not about an actor doing 40 characters,” Bailey said. “It’s about Sam, and how he comes out the other side. It takes a little while for people to see I’m not just talking to myself, that I’m bringing these characters to life. But once the audience is in Sam’s world, they accept the style of the piece; they get into Sam’s character.” Bailey himself has had to remind himself to tone down the gimmickry.

And the outspoken, angry chef,” Bailey said. “But for me, it all revolves

around Sam — how he reacts to these characters, and his journey.” Though “Fully Committed” has its stylized aspect, its main character is written on a human scale. Sam is a struggling actor who recently came close to landing a big part on HBO. But the role didn’t pan out, so Sam has returned to his the day job he has held for longer than he would like, as a reservation-taker at a hot-spot restaurant. The play takes place over one eight-hour shift, in which Sam has to deal with demanding diners, various routine crises (the food critic whose reservation has been lost; the co-worker whose car broke down), a desire to visit his father over the upcoming Christmas; and his own professional disappointment. Paige Price, artistic director of Theatre Aspen, has pointed out that “Fully Committed,” which premiered in New York City, in 1999, should have particular resonance in Aspen, land of high-end eateries, demanding clientele and people whose livelihoods depend on meeting those demands. But Bailey says Sam’s situation is the kind most anyone can relate to. “We all know these people — that lady who thinks she’s entitled to whatever she wants, the elderly woman completely unreasonable,” he said. “And we’ve all had these family phone calls. It all hits the fan on this one day. Everyone wants him to take care of everything — and Sam’s supposed to just be answering the phones.” Bailey, like virtually every young professional actor, can relate particularly well to Sam’s plight. Bailey has had more success than most of his contemporaries. Within a year of moving to New York, after graduating from the University of Arizona with degrees in both acting and musical theater, he had landed a role in a major production of “Cinderella,” at Lincoln Center’s massive State Theater. He had the featured role of Tommy in the first touring company of the Tony-winning musical “Jersey Boys,” a gig that lasted four years and took him to 35 cities. Still, slipping into Sam’s shoes is no great stretch. “I’ve worked a lot and at the end of every role, think, ‘Will I ever work

again?” Bailey, who did virtually no acting before college, said. “As an actor in New York, I’ve worked a lot of strange jobs — security, a temp job at a college, drove a U-Haul truck for a while.” Bailey has also worked in restaurants, mainly as a bartender: “I’ve been bartending where it’s empty all day, then a hundred NYU students come in all at once.” Bailey thinks “Fully Committed” realistically depicts the lives of aspiring actors. “One day you’re answering phones at a restaurant, the next you’re on HBO,” he said. “That’s how it happens.” This summer, it is the acting cup that is overflowing. In addition to “Fully Committed,” Bailey has a featured role in Theatre Aspen’s production of “Les Misérables, as Enjolras, the leader of the student revolution. For Bailey, it’s a perfect role, and not only because he’s been attracted to “Les Mis” since he saw it as a kid. “He’s the Mercutio of ‘Les Mis,’” Bailey said, referring to the character from “Romeo and Juliet.” “You get to do great stuff, good meaty stuff, and then you’re gone. It’s not quite as challenging as singing Jean Valjean or Javert, so it’s a nice contrast with ‘Fully Committed.’ If I had to do ‘Fully Committed’ and Jean Valjean, I’d be sleeping all day.” Beside the practical concerns as an actor, Bailey likes playing Enjolras because of the character’s idealism. “There’s a lot of passion. He’s a strong leader. He wanted to help the poor, stand up to the government,” Bailey said. “They weren’t successful at all. But it sure makes a good story.” To Bailey, what makes “Fully Committed” a good play is not the acrobatics of one actor taking on 40 or so roles, but bringing to life the one essential role of Sam. The show is a comedy with a breathless pace, but Bailey says there is a lot of substance to Sam. “He’s given a challenge by his agent, to stop letting people walk over him,” Bailey said. “To step to the plate, ask for what you want, develop a sense of worthiness. He has what it takes, but he needs to take charge to get what he deserves.”

FINDING FAITH IN ASPEN AND BEYOND by MADELEINE OSBERGER

the Aspen Idea of body, mind and spirit speaks to building the whole person. From the Aspen Institute to the Ute Trail, Aspen Music Festival to Smuggler, practitioners of the first two tenets seem to be everywhere. But how about spirit, the one bedrock concept of Walter Paepcke’s triumvirate that, other than certain days each week, is not as visible. Church services and meditations jam the online calendar, tempting a peek into Aspen’s spiritual community. Baptists, Buddhists, Catholics and most kinds of Christians may be served or saved in a single week. I’ve long wondered if the humble search for God is explored here with the same kind of fervor as a ride on the Government Trail or the 4 o’clock concert at the Music Tent. And where does God fit into my life right now, anyway? Recently, I took seven days to find out.

DAY 1 APPROACHING ST. BENEDICT’S MONASTERY, I’m reminded of the sacredness of these surroundings. Even the animals seem calmer out here beneath the mantle of the Elk Mountains, where the suggested no fly-zone offers a natural volume control for a Trappist order steeped in 900 years of tradition. Services for Monday morning prayer draw just a handful of the faithful, with more monks than the laity. It’s John the Baptist’s birthday and Abbot Joseph Boyle’s sermon

speaks of standing up, alone if need be, against the “vipers.” The message hits home for my newfound friend on the bench who’s clearly anguished by the acrimony surrounding the sale of neighboring Windstar’s land. Fortunately, Father Joseph leads with a gentle touch, sprinkling Brooklynaccented humor into the parables. In 1994, before we were married, my husband-to-be and I asked Joseph for some advice: “Well, I can’t speak from personal experience...” and we all laughed. But he offered some universal bon mots about love and respect that are applicable any day. The brick floor, single stained-glass window and the simple chalice in the sanctuary are complemented by songs that need no music, only the beauty of one’s voice. Even in this pristine environment, there’s still business to be done, some of which the abbot completes after Mass with his iPhone. St. Benedict’s website also doesn’t lack for modernity, including this pull-down tab: “Meet the Monks!” Rest assured there’s little time for social media with fields to be tended and animals to be fed, not to mention daily vigils and all those prayers, which begin at 4:30 a.m. and end with evening vespers.

With silence comes clarity; practices such as yoga in nature offer the author this opportunity.

DAY 2 EXPERIENCING SEVEN consecutive days of spirituality is important to this journey, so when a Buddhist meditation in Carbondale is cancelled, I look for a substitute. Two local events catch my eye: “Yoga in Nature” at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies and an author speaking at Explore about his new book, “God and Boobs.” I choose the former. Once upon a time there was an uproar over yoga in the Aspen schools as opponents saw it as a way of foisting a strange God upon unwilling children, while proponents couldn’t see the harm in bringing relaxation skills and meditation to an increasingly stressed-out bunch. There’s been an evolution, as an Associated Press story notes: “Yoga is now taught at public schools from the rural mountains of West Virginia to the bustling streets of Brooklyn as a way to ease stress for tense students.” As a kid in the 1960s, my Grammy augmented her mainstream beliefs

with regular yoga, which she learned through books and TV. A devout Catholic whose happiest day was when a Polish priest was tabbed as pope, Grammy’s embrace of massage and yoga made her way ahead of her time. By comparison, I feel a little behind the times while trying to achieve certain poses in a decidedly noncompetitive yoga class at ACES. Instructor Shannon’s soft voice seems to blend with river and bird sounds, noting how yoga, with references to our trunk and roots, the gentle heron and mighty eagle, comes from nature. Remember who you are and don’t forget to take care of yourself, Shannon implores to the dozen or so yogis splayed on mats beneath a toasty setting sun. I look up at the limb of the tree directly above and notice it has neither bud nor leaf, a message — or an inspiration perhaps — for the spiritually bereft? Walking down the path, beneath the watchful eyes of a great horned owl, I return his penetrating gaze.

DAY 3 IN THE NICE, cool basement of the Aspen Chapel we gather in a circle for “Insights: InterSpiritual Readings, Sharing and Meditation.” Under the direction of Polly, the week’s leader, the group shares, one paragraph at a time, a story of one woman who took what life threw at her and made positive changes What the Slow Food movement has taught many about enjoying rituals surrounding a meal, the book “Slow Love” by Dominique Browning teaches about making each of life’s moments count. On the third day of this journey a pattern is emerging: With silence comes clarity. Until we have quiet and some inner study, it’s easy to deflect tough questions.

With each page read from “Slow Love” seems to come more reflection. “We are running way too fast” in our lives, is a prevailing thought. An Aspen elder opines: “Sometimes we pick up on the tourists’ energy,” which is more frenetic than our own. That’s not something I’d considered in the past. She notes that advancing age brings upon a natural slowing of one’s pace; it also offers the gift of living more in the “now.” Not an easy task given the technology vying for our constant attention. Class finishes with a 10-minute meditation that breaks when a bell chimes. At home that evening, the ring of a child’s bicycle bell brings me back to that peaceful moment.

DAY 4 BY HUMP DAY, I feel a distinct slump that’s cured by Deeksha. Incense is burning, wooden flutes are playing on a tape somewhere and there’s an air of seriousness among the small but welcoming group at the Aspen Community Church. The “giver” of the Oneness Deeksha, an attractive woman in a sundress, asks if everyone is familiar with the process we will soon undertake. All shake their heads yes except me. She calmly explains how these givers would move around the room and offer us Deekshas, which are transferred by placing hands on or above our heads. This energy transfer is not tied to a particular religion but may bring about a shift in consciousness, I learn. “Think of the Divine Power, be it Jesus, Buddha or the Universe,” the facilitator says. First, though, we must open our chakras through deep breathing and good intentions. It’s a process I’m not totally unfamiliar with, having had Reiki incorporated into past massages and a chakra balancing performed during a particularly grueling stretch of work. The givers move silently and I never know which of the practitioners is working at what moment. The hands are gentle but at the same time powerful. We receive six Deekshas from people who are no longer perfect strangers. Three chants help us open our hearts to the offerings. “Drink plenty of water tonight,” the veterans share. Sleep comes easily and deeply.

DAY 5 SOME YEARS AGO and during our toughest times together as a couple, the Aspen Jewish Congregation was there, the congregants — our friends —praying for better times ahead and never invoking judgement. For that, I’ll always be grateful Here, on the home stretch of my spiritual week, it isn’t comfort I’m seeking but the opportunity to gather for song and prayers. After three days worth of introspection it’s time to rejoice and sing aloud. Rabbi David Segal and Cantor Rollin Simmons, she of the velvety voice, pull out the guitar and drum and bring joyfulness to a new level. Shabbat is a great way to start the weekend. David’s message of repairing a broken world is not lightweight but palpable as told through a prism of the film “Man of Steel.”

I enjoy his sermons and AJC activities, including an unforgettable rendition of the musical “Grease,” replete with Yiddish influences that I swear is one of Aspen’s funniest stage works to date. After services we truck downstairs for challah and a shot of wine or

Crown Royal. A young visitor named Chance asks about the bread tradition; he’s on his way to the Rainbow Festival in Montana. I’m surprised by the question and ask, “I thought you were Jewish.” His reply: “I am everything and everybody.”

DAY 6 ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH is where we were married, my daughter Madison was baptized and where Rick converted. In times good and bad it’s where I’ve sought comfort, celebrated joy and rendered many, many prayers. The growing conservatism and revelations of abuse against children caused me to back away from the institution...for awhile. Yet every return to St. Mary’s brings a certain level of satisfaction brought upon by the familiarity and comfort of these pews. “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It’s been nearly 20 years since my last Confession.” On this Saturday afternoon I’m not ready to return to the booth, so I don’t receive Communion (respecting Father John Hilton’s request to abstain). The church is packed with “summer Catholics,” the vast majority

of whom I don’t recognize. I do know the person for whom this Mass was being said as well as a longtime member who passed away that week The visiting priest, a Franciscan, speaks about an outreach effort his order operates in Vietnam, where leprosy is still an ongoing threat. I view this as honorable but reflect back on a mission trip Madison made last year to a reservation in Arizona. There, the need was profound. The new pope, Francis, and his focus on the society’s most destitute is offering me hope for the future. Because not only was St. Francis of Assisi a protector of the poor, he’s also the patron saint of animals.

DAY 7 IT’S APPROPRIATE THAT a weeklong journey that began with silence and austerity ends with a full-bodied celebration replete with packed pews, a booming baritone and an energized minister fresh from vacation. It’s Sunday morning at the Snowmass Chapel and Rev. Robert DeWetter is in fine form, reassuring us of Jesus’ love and knowledge that “wherever you are, whoever you are, know that He walks with you.” For me it’s never been a question of “Does God exist?” but where He fits in my life right now. Robert’s sermon provides insight into just this subject.

The next day, I feel an unexplainable sadness and it’s not until evening that I discover one reason why: I’d missed my “appointment” with God. While pulling weeds, I notice the natural evolution of side-by-side plants. How did the rose bush know to start blooming right as the lilacs were fading? Nature is a constant reminder of God’s greatness and our relative insignificance. While it’s arrogant to think I’d have it figured out in a week — people spend their lives searching for the truth, after all — this much I learned: Somewhere between namaste, alleluia and amen lies the answer.

Sunday at the Snowmass Chapel is a reminder to the author that “wherever you are, whoever you are, know that He walks with you.”

In telling the story of one fictional character, The Five Acts of Diego León invites readers to ponder the many real people in the past — and even the present — who have been forced to conceal their true identities, keeping secrets but sometimes channeling their hidden angst into art.
