The Arts Centre Gold Coast 2015 Youth Program

Page 1

Welcome Animal stories, circus stories, picture stories, Australian stories – stories to delight, amaze and inspire – the 2015 Youth Program has a future story for everyone. Over the years, we’ve worked hard to bring you seasons of high-quality stories, to inspire and educate the young and emerging performers, musicians, dancers, film makers and artists. There are 20 stories on offer throughout the year, taking place inside our performing arts spaces and on display inside the Gold Coast City Gallery, as well as fantastic programs in the Summer Series to keep those creative minds inspired before school returns for the year. We are pleased to announce that the Jock and Beverly McIlwain Arts Bus Fund is available to schools throughout 2015! The Jock and Beverly McIlwain Arts Bus Fund is an initiative to assist in reducing the cost of bus travel to the Centre. Schools can apply to the fund to receive a subsidy to contribute towards bus travel to see an exhibition, performance or participate in a workshop at the Centre. So get comfy, flick through the brochure and choose from the many exciting stories across the Centre in 2015. Finally, a special thanks to all of our amazing supporters, including our Benefactors, Sponsors, Partners, The Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast and of course those that

Misanthropology: The World Art of Adam Rish A survey exhibition featuring four decades of work by Sydney-based artist Adam Rish who is interested in cross cultural collaboration as ‘world art’ (like ‘world music’) to affirm Indigenous culture and regional diversity. He has worked with Indigenous artists in Australia, Indonesia, Tonga, Turkey and the USA. Rish views his role as an artist as a ‘re-presenter’, combining traditional techniques with modern technological and domestic images, a practice he calls ‘misanthropology’. His work is dystopic — he represents a world in confusion — but moderated by a comic humanism.

Cut-Back During the 1950s and 1960s films like Gidget (1959), The Endless Summer (1964) and Blue Hawaii (1961) starring Hollywood heartthrob Elvis Presley popularised surf culture, as did surf bands like The Bel Airs, The Beach Boys and Dick Dale & The Del Tones. In doing so, stereotypes emerged, some of which lingers today.

Billy Grogan’s dad used to tell her life is wild and finds its own way home. But he never did. He went fishing for a marlin two years back and never came home. Now she lives with her granddad, dreaming of the ocean and adventure while her life goes down the dunny. Then one dark and strange night, a miraculous marlin takes her and her granddad out past the reef, to the open ocean and the deep. But will either of them find their way back home? Inspired by classic seafaring literature, Marlin is set in the game fishing regions off Northern Queensland and is an adventurous tale performed in a sea of foam. For ages 9+ and their Grandparents.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra Movie Masterpieces It’s hard to imagine great movies without their equally great soundtracks—that monumental swell of Saharan grandeur in Lawrence of Arabia, the epic, evocative theme of Gone with the Wind, the ominous acceleration of rhythm as jaws emerge from the depths below. So expressive, so vital to the meaning of the movie, is it any wonder that concert composers have always been drawn to writing with stopwatch in hand and silent rushes on the screen before them? Net result? Melodies so sublime, and orchestral showpieces so exhilarating, that they define the music of our times. A school holiday special event for the whole family. THE One Day of the Year By Alan Seymour

It’s Anzac Day this week, that’s my day, that’s the old Diggers’ day. What is the meaning of Anzac Day? For war veterans like Alf Cook and his friend Wacka Dawson, it’s the chance to commemorate history, celebrate heroism and conjure national pride. For Alf’s son Hughie, Anzac Day flies the flag for a very different reality, one that brings the dignity of our Diggers to its knees and into the gutter – via one too many down the pub. Alan Seymour’s landmark Australian play returns to the stage to incite as much passion as ever.

The One Day of the Year looks at our national legend through the eyes of generation, class and character. On the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, HIT Productions brings a thoroughly fresh take on this truly Australian classic.

East Coast Encounter explores the phenomenon of first contact from the time of Cook’s mapping of the east coast of Australia, and how these encounters resonate with Indigenous and nonIndigenous artists, writers and songwriters today. East Coast Encounter features the work of Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists and writers to re-envisage the encounter by James Cook and his crew with Aboriginal people in 1770. Cook’s 1770 voyage has become central to narratives of Australian history and there are aspects of this seminal journey that continue to resonate powerfully today. This exhibition seeks to promote cultural dialogue and reconciliatory understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Artists include: Bianca Beetson, Michael Cook, Euan Macleod, Arone Meeks, Reg Mombassa and Judy Watson. This project has been developed by the University of the Sunshine Coast and assisted by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

But with the use of self-expression through photography, Jack begins to make sense of his world; of his relationships with others, and most importantly, with himself.
