2016 Teacher Professional Development Program for primary and secondary school teachers


TERM ONE MADE IN QLD TEACHER WORKSHOP DATE Monday 29 February TIME 4.00pm – 6.00pm VENUE Gold Coast City Gallery COST $25.00 SUBJECT AREA The Arts (Visual Art), Geography, History, Indigenous Perspectives Develop your confidence and ability to teach visual art across the curriculum in this presentation and practical workshop for P- 6 teachers. You will explore Geography, History and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander links with a focus on the Australian Curriculum: The Arts and the exhibition Made in QLD: Ode to the Souvenir. Participants will explore general curriculum links and then create an artwork that includes some of the elements within Visual Arts. The ideas and examples within the workshop can form the basis of a unit of work ready to be implemented in the primary classroom.

INNOVATION THINKING WITH DR KATHY MACKNEY

DATE Tuesday 1 March TIME 4.00pm – 6.00pm VENUE The Lounge Room COST Free (RSVP essential) SUBJECT AREA All subject areas 2015 Smithsonian Fellow Dr Kathy Mackey recently returned from Washington DC, working with the Smithsonian Centre for Learning and Digital Access. In this workshop teachers of all subject areas across Year 5 – 9 will unpack the concepts behind Innovation Thinking as a broader cycle of inquiry that embraces a range of subject areas in STEAM problem solving.

Innovation Thinking uses gallery resources to build on the design cycle and explore economic and historical applications including the pre-conditions for invention, how we learn to recognise the unusual and to see new connections and possibilities. Teachers will be able to take this pedagogical framework back to their classrooms, enabling their learners to navigate challenge and embrace the rewards of intellectual risk taking.


Viral – Work in Progress Read DATE Thursday 10 March TIME 4.00pm – 6.00pm VENUE The Space COST Free (RSVP essential) SUBJECT AREA The Arts (Drama) A unique and exclusive opportunity for teachers to view a work-inprogress, explore the creation of a local theatre work and provide feedback and contribute ideas to influence this original new work from the company that brought you The Pillowman and The Forwards, Shock Therapy Productions. Inspired by true events and local Gold Coast stories, Viral has evolved into a piece that explores the ethics of sharing, viewing and responding to critical events such as public vilification, racism and abuse.

A PRACTICAL PLANNING SESSION DATE Monday 14 March TIME 4.00pm – 6.00pm VENUE The Studio COST $25.00 SUBJET AREA The Arts Facilitated by educator and artist, Therese Flynn-Clarke, this collegiate sharing and networking session, focuses on increasing teacher knowledge and confidence in the cross-curricular implementation of The Arts across all subject areas. Participants are invited to bring selected subject areas and ideas to this practical workshop and collaborate to create cross-curricular planning relevant to the primary classroom with a focus on Visual Art. Suitable for Early Childhood and Primary Teachers – Middle School Teachers also welcome!


TERM TWO STOP MOTION MOVIE MAKING FOR TEACHERS with Ethan Cox

DATE Wednesday 20 April TIME 3.30pm – 6.30pm VENUE The Lounge Room COST $25.00 SUBJECT AREA Media Arts, English, ICT Would you like to teach Stop Motion but aren’t sure where to start? This workshop facilitated by Ethan Cox, son of Academy Award winning visual effects expert, John Cox, will lead you through the entire storytelling process: storyboarding, using different materials and exploring their benefits and limitations, special effects, camera angles, lighting, green screen, exporting your movie and adding titles and credits.

DATE Wednesday 13 April TIME 4.00pm – 5.00pm VENUE Gold Coast City Gallery COST Free (RSVP essential) SUBJECT AREA Visual Art, Technology Design, Science and Mathematics Join Julie Anderson from John Cox’s Creature Workshop for this exclusive teacher-only walk through of the exhibition How to Make a Monster: The Art and Technology of Animatronics. Perfect preparation for your school excursion: review the exhibit, make connections to curriculum and plan your pre and post visit activities.

WRITING PLAYS FROM TRUE STORIES DATE Thursday 5 May TIME 4.00pm – 6.00pm VENUE The Lounge Room COST $25.00, Workshop + ticket to Motherland $65.00 SUBJECT AREA The Arts (Drama), English, History Acclaimed playwright Katherine Lyall-Watson, author of Matilda Award winning Motherland, will run an intimate writing workshop


for teachers interested in learning about how to write theatre and performance drawn from true life or history. Katherine completed a doctorate at the University of Queensland on the subject of biographical theatre and can offer advice about how to research, how to get started and some practical tips on structuring and creating characters true-to-life. Participants are invited to submit a one-page synopsis of their idea and a maximum of 5 pages of script, one week before the workshop. Feedback will be given.

FACILITATED VIRAL FORUM DATE Thursday 19 May TIME 6.00pm – 8.00pm VENUE The Panorama Suite COST Free (RSVP essential) SUBJECT AREA Cross-Curricular This public event, facilitated by Cr Paul Bishop, invites community and cultural leaders to participate in an open forum to share and discuss the themes and ethical issues within the development of the new work by Shock Therapy Productions, Viral. There will be a number of questions and provocations that will be presented to the participants relating to the themes and issues of the new work. Teachers and student leaders are invited to participate in this forum that will explore the ethics of sharing, viewing and responding to critical events such as public vilification and abuse.

OWEN LEONG ARTIST PRESENTATION

DATE Saturday 25 June TIME 4.00pm VENUE The Panorama Suite COST Free SUBJECT AREA Visual Art – contemporary photography practice Winner of the 2015 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, Owen Leong is a contemporary artist exploring the transmission of culture and the body as a physical site of exchange. His work transforms the body through fictional selves to open a space for new identities to come into being. In recent work, Leong engages more deeply with his heritage; turning towards Chinese medicine, philosophy, and ancient systems of cultural knowledge to explore the poetics of healing. Leong will return to the Gold Coast from his base in Sydney to give a special public presentation.


TERM THREE SUZUKI PHYSICAL THEATRE DATE Wednesday 13 July TIME 4.00pm – 6.00pm VENUE The Basement COST $25.00 SUBJECT AREA The Arts (Drama) The Suzuki Actor Training Method is a powerful training system that develops the complete actor. Participants will not only improve physicality, vocal power and grounding, but will also increase confidence, self-knowledge and creativity. This workshop will cover the basics and also include improvisational exercises derived from the ideas within the Suzuki Method, and how to incorporate the techniques into classroom lessons and units of work.

WAITING FOR GODOT IN QUEENSLAND

The process of creating and transferring a classic European absurdist text to a contemporary Queensland theatre. DATE Friday 15 July TIME 4.00pm – 5.00pm VENUE The Space COST $25.00, Workshop + ticket to Waiting for Godot $45.00 SUBJECT AREA The Arts (Drama) Join Claudine & James Anderson from Mercury’s Wings as they explain the creation of MWTC Waiting for Godot and the concepts that underpin the production. Through Waiting for Godot teachers will explore: the concept of Existentialism and how it applies in a modern context; the structure and form of the play and how to personalise it; pace, pause and characterisation – exploring physicality; mood, symbol, tension and focus within the play; lessons learned from Endgame 2008.

Snugglepot & Cuddlepie Teacher Workshop DATE Monday 18 July TIME 4.00pm – 6.00pm VENUE The Studio COST $25.00 SUBJECT AREA The Arts (Visual Art), English, Science, History Inspired by the wonderful production of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, teachers will utilise the literature and legacy of Australian author May Gibbs to inspire a series of visual art lessons. Some links to the History and Science curriculum including our unique Australian flora and fauna, and the world of Botanical art will also be made. Led by educator and artist, Therese Flynn-Clarke, this will be a practical ‘hands on’ workshop for teachers celebrating the essence of the Australian bush and these iconic Australian characters.


SPEAKING SHAKESPEARE DATE Wednesday 20 July TIME 4.00pm – 5.30pm VENUE The Basement COST $25.00 SUBJECT AREA The Arts (Drama), English The thought of speaking a Shakespearean text is daunting for most us, but with the acquisition of a few tools and ideas, Shakespeare’s rich language and universal meanings can be unlocked and conquered. During this workshop participants will cover verse speaking, Iambic pentameter, and the use of punctuation and verse irregularities, prose and its purpose, clues in the text - characterisation and motion, and thoughts and thought units. The workshop will include work on current Drama syllabus texts: Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello.

CREATING CHARACTER IN MOVEMENT Psychological Gesture and Movement DATE Friday 22 July TIME 4.00pm – 5.30pm VENUE The Lounge Room COST $25.00 SUBJECT AREA The Arts (Drama) Join Claudine Anderson from Mercury’s Wings in a workshop exploring non-verbal communication and increase your physical vocabulary. Using effective movement techniques gathered from over 20 years of professional theatre experience, participants will increase awareness of personal physicality, extend movement vocabulary, discover ways to create character, play with dichotomy of spoken and physical text, and learn how to create presence.

This hands-on practical workshop aims to revitalise and empower music students and teachers and will explore what elements are inherent in ‘successful’ music performance. Aspiring musicians and experienced educators will come away armed with powerful tools for successful live performance. Find out how to increase your powers of communication and what excites audiences, adjudicators and examiners.


TERM FOUR INDIGENOUS IMMERSION DAY FOR TEACHERS DATE Wednesday 12 October TIME 3.30pm – 6.30pm VENUE Gold Coast City Gallery COST Free (RSVP essential) SUBJECT AREA Visual Arts, Media Arts Indigenous Perspectives Teachers will have an opportunity to connect with local artists from the South Stradbroke Island Artist Camp to develop knowledge of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander culture and art, with a focus on Identity and connection to Country. Come along for this hands-on afternoon.
