Imagine inno vate inspire The 2016 Education Program is set to engage and delight young creatives, and provide quality experiences linked to the Australian Curriculum for teachers and students. Created with General Capabilities, Cross-Curricular Priorities and transdisciplinary approaches in mind, the 2016 Education Program provides creative, exciting and adventurous learning opportunities in The Arts and beyond, including links to Science, Geography and History. Many of the program offerings are supported by teacher notes, so that integration into the classroom is easy. In 2016 we showcase excellence in creative practice, with exhibitions Made in Queensland: Ode to the souvenir, How to Make a Monster - The Art and Technology of Animatronics created by John Cox’s Creature Workshop, the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award 2016 and the annual ENERGIES exhibition of talented Gold Coast secondary students. These exhibitions will inspire students and teachers alike, and enrich the cultural life of our city. In addition, a quality program of exhibitions, drama, dance and music complete a year-long education program of fabulous opportunities for young people to engage and connect with performing and visual arts. We invite you to embrace and support the initiatives on offer. The Jock and Beverly McIlwain Bus Fund will again be supported by our generous Benefactors Jock and Beverly McIlwain in 2016, ensuring that there are fewer financial barriers for our young people to access quality learning experiences in The Arts. Finally, many of our learning programs are realised through the support of our amazing supporters, including our Benefactors, Sponsors and Partners and The Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast. Because of this support, students from all over the Gold Coast region and beyond have access to quality Arts programming.

Indo Pop Indonesian Art from APT7 This exhibition presents a group of artists who were a central feature of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art's flagship 2012 exhibition, The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. Since the 1970s, groups of contemporary artists in Indonesia have banded together to challenge social, political and economic structures as well as the arts establishment, creating a powerful voice of protest and criticism in their works and contributing to the nation's new status as a major centre for international art. This exciting group of artists tend to look to urban and popular culture for new styles to express themselves.

Made in Queensland Ode to the souvenir From its theme parks and golden beaches to its carefree lifestyle, the Gold Coast is a tourist’s dream. And with tourism comes the souvenir - hats, snow domes, magnets, tea-towels, cups, spoons and postcards, to list just a few of the mementoes bought by visitors. Ironically, many of these souvenirs are made overseas: China, the UK, Japan and even New Zealand.
Made in Queensland: Ode to the souvenir provides the platform to showcase our eclectic souvenir collection and invite six local artists from diverse practices to view and create artwork responding to the collection. The works produced will be showcased in the exhibition and offer local school students a unique opportunity to investigate the Gold Coast as a place.

How to Make a Monster the art and technology of animatronics Created by John Cox’s Creature Workshop Discover the skills and processes involved in bringing a creature from the written page to the silver screen in this fascinating ‘behind the scenes’ exhibition. How to Make a Monster reveals how monsters and creatures are designed, story-boarded, maquettes made, and then how the full size pieces are sculpted, moulded and finished. Students will see how animatronic components are designed and installed to create the bones and muscles that bring monsters to life. Interactive exhibits allow students to become an animatronics puppeteer, a lighting technician, a creature designer and so much more. How to Make a Monster features the work of John Cox, 1995 Visual Effects Academy Award® winner for the movie Babe, and his Gold Coast-based company, John Cox’s Creature Workshop. With integrations from The Arts, to Science and beyond, this exhibition is a learning experience that is not to be missed!

YScreen at The Gold Coast Film Festival The Gold Coast Film Festival’s YScreen is a program of entertaining and intelligent films and workshops that seek to encourage young audiences to become active viewers, stimulate critical discussion of film, and provide an insight into other cultures and ways of life. Schools are invited to view selected festival films that align with crosscurriculum learning priorities for upper primary and secondary years, complemented by film criticism workshops conducted by industry professionals. Study guides, created in conjunction with Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM QLD) will be available providing film content analysis for teachers and students.

Sugarland By Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) Toured by Performing Lines Nina is 16 years old, good at school, has a job at the cinema and one of the best singing voices around. But none of that is important. She needs a place to live. Living with her Aunty in an overcrowded house, things aren’t going well, and it’s getting complicated. Erica is 16 and the new girl in town. Her Dad’s in the RAAF and the family’s just moved to Katherine. She’s lived all over Australia and every time she makes somewhere home, she moves again. She’s so used to being an outsider, she’s stopped trying to fit in.

What at first seems a play about nihilism, becomes an epic journey of life affirming optimism.

CounterMove Sydney Dance Company’s CounterMove explores luminescence and life in a double bill that will enchant, compel and amuse with exhilarating physical dance by some of Australia’s finest dancers. Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman’s witty and energetic Cacti, performed by the full Company and a string quartet, will take you in with a knowing wink, then surprise you with its bracing physicality. Viral You are sitting on the bus when a racially motivated argument breaks out. A young girl takes out a mobile phone and starts to film the event. When you get home that evening you go online and realise the footage has gone viral.
Viral explores the role of social media and technology and how it impacts the way we record, communicate and think about events of racism, abuse, violence and sexual assault in the community. Shock Therapy Productions returns to The Arts Centre Gold Coast to present a new and original work that is inspired by local events and developed through a series of community consultations. Viral is a powerful, thought-provoking story that is not to be missed.

Othello A Bell Shakespeare production A violent exploration of the thin line that separates love and jealousy, Othello is a relentless journey of vicious passion. A warrior on the fields of war, felled by the sharpness of whispered words, Othello is a man swept up in desire, quickly turned to murderous rage when he is betrayed by his military brother-in-arms, the cynically destructive Iago. One of William Shakespeare’s most famous and passionate tragedies, Othello will be directed by Artistic Director Peter Evans, in a gripping production that will touch audiences to their core, as envy is a weapon wielded with brazen savagery, and the complex contradictory nature of humanity is tested. 22

QSO plays the Firebird Dynamic orchestration, captivating rhythm and a smoldering finale; Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird is his most fantastic creation; it is no wonder that this is one of the most loved and popular ballet scores to make its way to the concert hall stage. Included on the program is Prokofiev’s divine Classical Symphony, renowned for its petite, intimate melodies and one of Haydn’s best known works, his Symphony No.88. In an exciting display of local talent, the concert will also feature some of the Gold Coast’s finest young musicians, performing on stage with the QSO.

In 2016 we are looking for young people who are passionate about art and culture on the Gold Coast and want to be involved in championing The Arts Centre’s exhibitions, shows and activities to communities across the Gold Coast. This opportunity involves being recognised as an Ambassador to The Arts, going behind the scenes at The Arts Centre, exclusive invitations to exhibitions and performances, workshops, opening nights and more.
Bring your students to The Arts Centre Gold Coast for a full immersion in The Arts. Use The Studio as your classroom with the option of viewing exhibitions in the Gold Coast City Gallery, shows from the 2016 Education Program, or workshop with working artists. Immerse your class in The Arts for a day or more. Work with our Education Officer to make your residency opportunity your own. Basic residency programs are free.
We welcome applications from school students that come from a diversity of backgrounds and life experiences, have good written and oral communication skills, and could be budding critics, visual artists, directors, actors, musicians, writers or creatives.

YOUTH THEATRE PROJECT In 2010 The Arts Centre Gold Coast forged a collaboration with Queensland Theatre Company to provide professional direction for the Gold Coast’s young and emerging actors. Continuing this legacy, The Arts Centre Gold Coast supports Shock Therapy Productions, a Gold Coast theatre company, in directing this initiative in 2016. Participants will be mentored to deliver a quality theatre piece that extends their aptitude and demonstrates excellence. Ages 16 - 24. It’s best to book early to avoid disappointment. Payment for School Group Bookings is due a minimum of two weeks prior to the event. Don’t forget that for every 10 students booked, one teacher can attend free of charge! Student Group ticket prices apply for a student group booking of six or more.

GALLERY BOOKING FORM We present a changing program of exhibitions of local, national and international significance across three galleries - Gallery 1, Gallery 2 and Foyer Gallery - and have a trail of works from the City Collection on display throughout The Arts Centre Gold Coast building. The Evandale Sculpture Walk is located around the lakeside area at the rear of the building. Entry is free but donations are always appreciated. Day
