2013 Annual Report

Parents of newborns diagnosed with disabilities call us for information—and hope. Families with children transitioning out of school put our vast knowledge of resources to use. Employees with disabilities learn skills and find success at our employment centers and at local businesses. People become more independent in and out of the home with our supports. Friends socialize. Sometimes they develop romantic relationships. We nurture them all. Individuals who lose loved ones lean on our shoulders. Senior citizens stay active at our day centers.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU THROUGH ALL AGES, ALL STAGES. ALWAYS.

LIKE MANY TEENAGE GIRLS, 18-year-old Tyieshia Cooper never met a pair of shoes she didn’t like. She loves going to shoe stores and trying on pair after pair. So Tyieshia loves the time she spends at the mall with Amity Petterson, a support staff member from The Arc who takes her on c ommunity outings. On her fourth birthday, Tyieshia was hit by a car and suffered a traumatic brain injury that causes her to be naive and impulsive in ways that could affect her safety. Her grandmother and legal guardian, Alice Brown, calls “Ty-Ty” a miracle. A student at St. Elizabeth’s school, Tyieshia gets all A’s. She earned a certificate in animal care; now she is learning to cashier. Ty’s downfall, says Alice, is that she is e xtremely e xuberant, and Alice worries that it makes her granddaughter vulnerable. “She’s too friendly. She talks to strangers too much and thinks everyone is wonderful.” That’s why, at her annual Individual Plan meeting, Tyieshia chose to learn how to be safe in the community. Now Amity is working hard to help Ty become aware of how she behaves in public. “I like that Amity keeps an eye on Ty’s over- friendliness,” Alice says. “She is doing a great job helping Tyieshia be more self-sufficient, too. She is teaching her to use the ATM. She expects her to get her own change when they go out for pizza.” Alice appreciates the community outings for another reason, too. “I’m 76 and I’ve had back surgery. Amity takes Tyieshia places I can’t go anymore.” She adds, “We live in a building of mostly senior citizens, and Ty-Ty has no friends here. It means so much to me that she is able to go places with Amity.”

Amity says she and the family are a good team. “Alice and I bounce ideas off each other, and if issues arise, she lets me know about them. Tyieshia has a lot of input, too.” Like her grandmother, Tyieshia loves The Arc. “They gave us the opportunity to get to know Amity before we went out. We got to see if she was

Alice Brown, Tyieshia and Amity Petterson the right match. We e xplained my struggles and she told us how she can help. “I like that Amity helps me get out more. We’ve been to the Inner Harbor and Six Flags. We went to a museum, the library, and the car show. “Amity is there for me. I tell her what bothers me so she knows how to work with me. She helps me control my loud giggles and my talking too much. “Sometimes I have a hard time accepting things, like when I want something I can’t afford. Amity and I make a plan to help me manage my money better. I have to learn to save.” That’s a skill that will come in handy, b ecause Tyieshia says she wants a big family—and a $500,000 house someday. l

TO CALL VERONICA MARTINEZ an involved mother is an understatement. She leaves her house in Abingdon every morning at 6 to take her son, Will Douglas, to his supported employment landscape job at the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn, because Mobility service isn’t a vailable where he lives. When he gets off work at 3 p.m., she’s there to pick him up. “Veronica isn’t just Will’s mom,” says Wes Bickham, the landscape site manager, “she’s the crew’s mom. She makes brownies for our parties. It makes Will feel amazing that everyone loves his mom, and it gives him a better work life.” Veronica was told Will had an intellectual disability when he was three years old. From that moment on, she made sure he was in “a real school.” Will graduated from Milford Mill High School and the Community College of Baltimore County. Will, now 32, has been with The Arc since 2002, when he turned 21 and graduated from school. “I like driving the Z-Master riding mower,” Will says, “and I can use weed-eaters, edgers, and blowers.” His supervisor, Raimore Wilson, describes Will as a pleasant, low-key guy who knows a lot about m ovies and music. “Just this m orning the crew and I were laughing with Will b ecause he was quoting lines from an old Jackie G leason movie,” R aimore says. “My supervisors teach me how to be r esponsible and how to stay focused and concentrate,” Will confides. “They teach me how to be a man.” Veronica appreciates that. “His supervisors are like big brothers to Will. They teach him about life, about d ating, and about maturing. They’ll tell him, ‘Will, you’re a grown man. You should do things like make your own lunch and make sure your uniform is clean.’ ”

Suzanne Davenport, Will’s case manager, is a nother valued member of his team. Suzanne helped find a driver’s education course for Will and was instrumental—no pun intended—in getting Will hired as a DJ for Arc parties. “My mother is a singer,” Will says, “and she has the equipment I need to DJ. I really like doing Christmas parties, birthday parties, and retirement parties.” Veronica adds that Will wanted to be a DJ for a long time. “The Arc made it happen. “When Will first came to Seton [Business Park], I never thought he’d have a real job, but he has a

Veronica Martinez, Will and Raimore Wilson very good one. He makes a good salary, too—money most people wouldn’t think he’d be making because of his disabilities. “Now he can take care of the lawn at home. He mows, edges, and aerates for us.” From time to time, people suggest that Will and Veronica’s long commute could be avoided if he found a job closer to home, through a different service provider. For Veronica, that isn’t an option. “The Arc Baltimore is family to us.” l

ALTHOUGH SHE ISN’T AWARE of it, 70-year-old Doris G arrett, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s d isease a decade ago, has such a c ommitted support team that she is able to remain in her lifelong home instead of having to live in a n ursing home. For almost 13 years, Arc support specialist Melissa Meyers and her son Austin have lived with Doris, in Doris’s home. Melissa remembers when Doris helped around the house and was “pretty independent.” Not so anymore. When Doris isn’t at the medical day center she attends seven days a week, she moves Duplo blocks around, plays with an a ctivity apron, or pets Melissa’s dog and cats. “She will watch a little TV but mostly points at it and talks to it,” Melissa explains. “She used to be able to write the daily lottery numbers down, but she can’t do that anymore.” The Arc provides support for Doris from 3 p.m. until 9 a.m. every day. Melissa is with Doris until 11, after which overnight staff takes over. Members of that team are important because Doris tends to stay awake all night after days she is unable to go to the center. On very cold days, when Doris is under doctor’s orders to stay inside, her sister, Shirley Garrett, fills in between shifts. Shirley also handles doctor a ppointments and finances. Doris requires a lot of care. In addition to bathing and dressing her, Melissa has to puree all of Doris’s food and feed her. Ever since Doris had a spiration pneumonia, liquids have had to be thickened for her. She has kidney disease, too, so her fluids have to be limited. “Melissa has worked out a schedule for fluids and feeding,” says Shirley. “She has done an excellent job figuring all that out.” Both Shirley and Melissa attend The Arc’s team meetings. Says Shirley, “Sometimes we need strategies for redirecting certain behaviors. We have always gotten helpful suggestions.”

Shirley Garrett, Doris and Melissa Meyers The dedicated pair of caregivers sees each other three or four times a week. They seem to agree on everything, including the importance of seeking out each other’s opinion, especially about medical issues. It’s clear they have developed a natural rhythm, like an old married couple—minus the arguments. “We’ve been together so long we think the same,” Melissa says. “Doris’ family is part of my family, and my family is part of Doris’. ” Shirley says Doris had no trouble adjusting when Melissa and Austin moved in. She says, “The living arrangement gave Doris the opportunity to go out more often and experience new things. “I don’t know what I would have done w ithout Melissa, but I am certain I would have had to give up my home. It’s like Melissa knows my sister better than I do. She is very in tune with Doris. It’s almost like she can read Doris’ mind. “It has been hard to see my sister decline, but the good thing is that she isn’t aware. She still seems content. And Melissa hasn’t given up on her. She says she will be there for Doris for as long as we need her. Given the circumstances, the situation couldn’t have worked out better.” l 6

An Arc for a lifetime

The Arc Baltimore puts the pieces together so that people of all ages have all the supports needed to help them transition as seamlessly as possible through all stages of life. To do so even more effectively, this year we brought together several departments to create the outreach and family services division. It consists of the outreach, foster care, and family living departments. The first part of this consolidation combined the agency’s two “front doors”—enabling our expert outreach specialists to respond even more quickly to anyone seeking information, resources, and direct support. This integrated team shares knowledge and works openly with our new family living department: part two of this change. Family living is an apt descriptor for the s ervices we provide across the lifespan for both children and adults living with family members. This change has positioned us to partner even more productively with families so individuals can thrive. One example is when a young adult moves from the education system to supported employment or day programming and community supports. In past years, the individual’s services were transferred to another department, with different staff. Now the

original team, which is familiar with the family, can provide those services sooner, without disruption. Our staff continues to provide supports across the lifespan for those living in their own home, an assisted living unit, or another shared living space. During the past year, for example, we helped with transitions involving new jobs and relationships, grief and loss, changes in living situations, and retirement—to name just a few. In short, we provide an Arc for a lifetime. How do we do it? We have highly skilled and dedicated professionals who work tirelessly, 24/7, to ensure that individuals have the life they dream of. Our committed board of directors graciously shares its expertise from a variety of disciplines. And the generosity of our donors helps bolster our mission, as does the boundless energy of our caring corps of volunteers. We thank you one and all. Respectfully submitted,

Carla N. Murphy President
