Bear Paw Paints the Town!

Celebrating 30 years of fun and family togetherness! Since 1985, the Chugiak/Eagle River Chamber has staged the Bear Paw Festival. Over those wonderful 30 years, the Chamber has worked with a diligent focus on the beautification and maintenance of our fabulous community. Bear Paw Paints the Town is a reminder to us all of the passion and dedication our community members and businesses have displayed in ensuring this mission is on the hearts and minds of everyone, and it is this attribute that separates our community from so many others across the State and Country. Bear Paw events this year feature some old, and some new, exciting fun for everyone in the family. The events begin on Wednesday with the Bear Paw Awards Luncheon and culminates on Sunday afternoon with the classic I-DID-A-DUCK. Filling the days in between are fun and games galore! Those seeking an athletic challenge can participate in the Bear Paw Classic, a 5K run through the town. Looking for a more relaxing weekend? Come walk through the Classic Car Show, visit the vendors off Business Blvd & Regency drive, or enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride and see all the sites. And of course, join us for the Grande Parade, Slippery Salmon Olympics, and the Bear Paw’s Got Talent. Rain or shine, the Bear Paw Festival has something for everyone! The festival is just one of the many things your Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber does to make this “the most livable community in Alaska.” We continue to promote not only the economy of the area, but the unique quality of life that we enjoy. Thank you to the numerous community members and businesses for your support! Without your efforts and contributions this wonderful weekend would not be possible. Bear Paw Festival Royalty Pageant Thursday, July 9, 7pm Come out to the Chugiak High School Auditorium on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 7 PM and cheer on our own local teens! The Bear Paw Pageant is not your typical event! Young men & women who are enrolled in grades 9 - 12 and compete in costume competition & personal interviews. This is a pageant based on poise, creativity, friendliness and service to community. The Court will join in a year of activities as schedules permit. Following the pageant, all contestants participate in various festival events as a group providing an entire weekend of fun and community service credits.

Odor Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest Friday, July 10, 1pm at the Eagle River Commons What’s blowing in the wind at the Bear Paw Festival? It’s the Great Alaska Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest! This event is open to any child 5 –15 years of age wearing a pair of sneakers. The worse the better! Kids and judges go toes to nose in a fiendish frenzy of foul and fetid footwear for the title of the best of the worst! The first 25 contestants receive an official T-shirt. The winner receives a year’s supply of Odor-Eaters products, fun gifts, trophy, and their champion rotten sneakers may be permanently enshrined in the Odor Eaters Hall of Fumes. Parents need to accompany kids to sign an event release form.

GCI Presents The Bear Paw Grand Parade! Saturday, July 11, 11am GCI will be leading the 2015 Grand Parade and fill the business district with floats, clowns, kids and music! The parade begins at 11 AM Saturday morning and follows the route down the Old Glenn Highway, Business Boulevard and Centerfield Drive in downtown Eagle River. GCI joins us again this year as the major sponsor of the Grand Parade. The parade features a variety of entries, including floats, pageant royalty, and cubscouts, fire trucks, drill teams & kids on bikes!

MTA Presents The Slippery Salmon Olympics Saturday, July 11, 1:15pm Just picture it . . . hula hoops, orange cones and a very slippery salmon! Throw in a glass of soda on a tray and you’ve got a race! Teams of two race against the clock for bragging rights and a real cool trophy! MTA sponsors this race annually and this year the proceeds benefit Chugiak-Eagle River Foundation. Team entry fee is $100. For more information or to register, call 694-4702

Running with the Bears - 300 Yard Fun Run Presented by First National Bank Alaska Sunday, July 12, 1pm This “bear-ly” a marathon 300-yard fun run was started, because after 300 yards, it isn’t fun any more! This is running as it should be done . . . as briefly as possible! This race should appeal to even the laziest of lounge lizards. You could win a round trip for 2 to Seward on the Alaska Railroad and many other great prizes! There will never be an easier way to get a race T-shirt this summer. Think how great it will look on you when you’re back home watching TV! Race check-in starts at Noon on Sunday. Pre-registration fee is $15. Race day registration is $20. You must be present to win! Pre-registration can be done at the Chamber office through Friday July 10th and at the mainstage on Saturday July 11th. Sunday is late day registrations which will be taken up until race time with late registration fee at the mainstage.

SBS Presents Human Foosball Sunday, July 12, 1:30pm-3:30pm at the mainstage Register your team of six for a shin kickin’ good time! Rotary I-Did-a-Duck Race & Winners Sunday, July 12, 4:30pm at the mainstage “Swimming on the Boulevard” This quacky contest, held at 4:30 PM Sunday, July 12th, is the final major event of the Bear Paw Festival. Eagle River Rotary Club members dump more than 1000 numbered, plastic ducks into the race slough in front of the main stage. Each duck was “sold” beforehand, and the lucky ducks whose quacker cross the finish line could be the grand prize winner! Along with the grand prize, there are tons of prizes for the ducks that are awarded at the end! Race tickets are $10 apiece and will be available during the Bear Paw Festival. Funds raised support youth programs and scholarships sponsored by the organization. www.bearpawfestival.org
