During the day, the lantern allows diffused sunlight to illuminate the lobby area, whilst in the evenings the atmosphere evolves via a warm, ambient glow. In the middle sits a tree of the season (for example a peach tree in March and then a cherry tree in April during the city’s famous cherry blossom season), silhouetted against the floor-to-ceiling windows revealing the Tokyo cityscape. A plethora of artworks adorn the hotel. Perhaps the most elegant are the stucco flowers in the corridors. Syuhei Hasado, one of the few remaining Sakan, or plaster craftsmen, uses traditional techniques and natural materials to design innovative plasterwork. Graceful, precise and inspired by nature, the handmade stucco art is a perfect addition to the minimalist surroundings.
