Welcome to The Ad Club’s annual Women’s Leadership Forum! Today we celebrate the power of women in 2013 and honor the ‘Women We Admire’. These are women from all generations and walks of life who have inspired us. The ‘Women We Admire’ have broken through the glass ceiling and helped others to follow more easily. They are the change agents in our world, the next generation of leaders, and the women who forged ahead in male-dominated industries. They all have stories behind their accomplishments that will motivate and inspire us. It is fitting that our marquee Women’s Leadership Forum is the kick-off for The Ad Club’s yearlong centennial celebration. We are marking this important milestone by ‘Celebrating 100 Years of Building Brands in Boston’. As part of the celebration, we invited you, our community, to nominate the 100 women you admire. The results were overwhelming and you’ll find the impressive list and your touching tributes in the Digital Book available for download beginning today. Congratulations to all of the Women we Admire in 2013.

SPEAKERS

MARTHA COAKLEY

Massachusetts Attorney General

Attorney General Martha Coakley has dedicated the last 20 years of her life to a career in public service. Coakley has a strong history as an advocate—not only for individuals and communities, but also for the best interests of the Commonwealth at large. Coakley brings to the Attorney General’s office a diverse and extensive legal background, a proven track record of bringing people to the table to find effective solutions to the issues that face the Commonwealth, and a strong commitment to her role as a public servant. Attorney General Coakley began her legal career in 1979, practicing civil litigation with the firm of Parker, Coulter, Daley & White and later at Goodwin Proctor LLP, both in Boston. While in civil practice, Coakley gained extensive experience in such areas as insurance defense, criminal defense, and large-scale construction litigation. She joined the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office in 1986, as an Assistant District Attorney in the Lowell District Court office. In 1987, Coakley was invited by the U.S. Justice Department to join its Boston Organized Crime Strike Force as a Special Attorney. She returned to the District Attorney’s Office in 1989, and in 1991 was appointed the Chief of the Child Abuse Prosecution Unit, during which time she investigated and prosecuted hundreds of cases of both physical and sexual abuse of children, including Commonwealth v. Louise Woodward. In December 1997, Coakley resigned her position to campaign for District Attorney in the 54 cities and towns of Middlesex.

In 1998, Coakley was elected Middlesex District Attorney. During her 8 years as District Attorney, Coakley established herself as a passionate advocate for public safety, not only bringing justice to crime victims and their families, but also emphasizing the importance of working with community leaders, schools, and law enforcement in a variety of diverse and multifaceted prevention efforts. Under her leadership, the office’s Child Abuse Prosecution Unit continued to serve as a national model for victim-centered prosecution of crimes against children. Coakley was also responsible for extending that model to sexual crimes against adults, establishing the office’s Adult Sexual Assault Division in 2002. During her tenure as District Attorney, Coakley oversaw the successful prosecution of a number of high profile crimes, including the cases of several Catholic priests charged with sexually abusing children, the conviction of Michael McDermott on seven counts of first degree murder in connection with the workplace massacre at Edgewater Technologies in Wakefield, and the successful prosecution of Thomas Junta, the Reading father who fatally beat another parent at a youth hockey practice. Martha Coakley received a B.A. degree, cum laude, from Williams College in 1975, and a J.D. degree from the Boston University School of Law in 1979. KRISTEN KISH

Chef de Cuisine // Stir

Born in South Korea and adopted into a family in Kentwood, MI, Kristen Kish showed an affinity for cooking at a young age. Kristen felt inspired at the young age of six years old by watching the cooking show Great Chefs of the World on Discovery channel, feeling connected to the chefs, the passion they showed for cooking, and the artistic nature of the cooking itself. After high school, Kristen originally attended college with the intent of studying International Business, but soon realized that the subject matter was not reflective of her true passions. Her mother suggested she go to culinary school, and since attending Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago, IL and graduating in 2006, Kristen has never looked back. Before joining the Stir team in 2011, Kristen worked in numerous restaurants, including Michelin-star chef Guy Martin’s Sensing. From her experiences with Barbara Lynch and Guy Martin, Kristen has found her love in restaurants to be the energy, pace, and lifestyle of those in the industry, as well as the camaraderie shared between those within it. She finds the most fulfilling aspects of her career to be bringing people together through the shared experience of food, wine, and hospitality, and knowing the happiness from the experience will remain with guests long after they leave.

Kristen’s passion within food lies in refined cuisine. While she occasionally veers off the beaten path to create rustic dishes, she always finds her way back to refined, elegant creations. In Fall 2012, Kristen was promoted to Chef de Cuisine of Stir and oversees all back of house operations, including the design and execution of nightly menus. Kristen seeks to create unforgettable experiences for the 10 guests of Stir every night, creating elegant, composed menus and demonstrating cooking techniques for guests to duplicate in their own homes. Kristen’s favorite aspect of Stir is being able to meet 10 new people nightly and being able to connect with them on a deeper level fostered of the intimate nature of the Stir space. Most recently, Kristen competed on Bravo’s Top Chef Season 10: Seattle. And her reputation as one of the country’s great chef’s was confirmed as she was awarded the coveted title of Top Chef!
