Welcome... ...to The Vine! Welcome readers to our Autumn issue. As always we’re delighted to bring you a host of local news stories and information on upcoming local events – in Swannington, Griffydam and Whitwick, to name just a few – so please take a moment to browse through our pages to see what catches your eye.

Volunteering /Charity News....12

What’s On.......................32-33

One item that might interest is posed by a question: do you have what it takes to be a ‘Young Enterprise’ volunteer? If you think so, turn to page 12, as we think such an interesting opportunity is an exceptional and worthwhile activity for local business people to get involved in. If you like browsing for interesting gifts, perhaps for the odd early Christmas present or two, why not note the date of the Keythorpe Manor Fayre at the end of October. The Fayre, organised to raise money for LOROS and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, offers a great day out for all the family, whilst supporting two great charities in the meantime (see page 13 for more details). For those that prefer their days (and evenings) more of historically focused, how about attending a fascinating talk about the local Hastings and Grey families and their centuries-long rivalries. In addition, Dr Michael Lynch, a retired Leicester University Lecturer, is also offering ‘Modern History’ talks, all of which, have previously been, very wellreceived. For more information on both, turn to pages 32 and 33. Best regards,

VOLUNTEERING WITH A DIFFERENCE Across Leicestershire and beyond, businesses and individuals are volunteering their time to work with Young Enterprise; the UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity, working with young people aged 4 to 25 to develop their employability skills. A popular and rewarding opportunity to embark on; Young Enterprise Volunteers become Business Advisors, coaching and mentoring a Young Enterprise Company, where students set up and run their own business. It’s a brilliant role for anyone who wants to get involved with the local community, work with young people and even develop their own skills. But what does it really mean to become a Business Advisor? What does it involve? And what on earth do you do on your first day with your group of students? We spoke to Mishal to get her thoughts on being a Business Advisor for Young Enterprise. Top Tips “Stick with it. Don’t run away after 2 weeks!” Having moved to the UK from Pakistan 2 years ago, Mishal graduated with a Degree in Biochemistry. She’s about to start her PHD but in the meantime, she’s volunteering as a Business Advisor. “I wanted to get out of the house; a friend suggested volunteering. I used to volunteer back home in between college and university and this opportunity was something completely outside of my field.” It’s worth remembering that being a Business Advisor isn’t being a teacher, it’s a completely different approach aiming to bring practical skills and experience to keep the company on track. “They already have their teacher to tell them what’s right and wrong, I’m there to give them another perspective.” Mishal attends her student’s weekly Company Board Meeting for 1 to 2 hours. Although it’s not a huge time commitment, Mishal still finds herself genuinely interested and invested in the young people involved. They really have to think about the aspects of running a business for the first time, including market research, choosing a product, managing cash flow and balancing the books. “It’s hard to let them make mistakes but they need to learn, so you need to let them do it even if you know it’s not going to work out.” Mishal is the first to admit that the first few weeks with a new company can be challenging “They are not organised so they look to you for advice, you need to stick it out!! None of the students know what they are doing, but in time they figure it out and you’re there to help them. After the first few weeks, it all starts to come together.” And the rewards? They come thick and fast. For Mishal, it’s about seeing the young people learn – and enjoying it, they begin to think about their futures. If you would like to learn more about volunteering opportunities as a Business Adviser or for different one day events with Young Enterprise across Leicestershire, please e-mail: tina.smith@y-e.org.uk or Twitter: @Tina4YE

Life-saving kit installed in town centre A life-saving defibrillator has been placed in Loughborough town centre thanks to local fundraisers. Loughborough Lions Club raised around £1,200 for the kit and Charnwood Borough Council arranged for it to be installed at the entrance to Market Yard, just off Market Place. The Mayor of Charnwood accepted the donation on behalf of the Council at an unveiling ceremony attended by members of the Lions club, council officers and guests. Robin Duke, President of the Loughborough Lions Club, said: “Over the year we’ve been raising funds through various events in the town, including our Christmas concert at Carillon Court. The money was really raised by the people of Charnwood. It will give peace of mind to market traders, residents and the Loughborough Street Pastors to know that the equipment is there should they need it.” Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor John Capleton, said: “I would like to thank the Lions Club and the people of Charnwood for this tremendous donation.” Carol Nicholson, a market trader who runs a stall opposite the newly-installed equipment said: “Over my years as a market trader I’ve performed CPR on two people who sadly passed away. I asked the Council about having a defibrillator in town and it’s great to see it finally here. It will really make the town a safer place to live, work and visit.” Market traders and workers near the defibrillator will be offered training on how to use it in case of an emergency. The equipment can be used by anyone. People can call the emergency services who will provide a code to access the kit. Instructions for the equipment are clearly displayed and the user will then be given step-by-step instruction via the defibrillator on how it is to be used.

SEAT SUPPORT FOR RIA

The Newlife Foundation & The Co-op help 12 year old Ria Thomas Fabulous fundraising at the Central England Co-operative store in Groby is helping local girl Ria Thomas get the specialist seat she needs for her powered wheelchair. Ria, aged 12 and from Thorpe Astley, has Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and has undergone 38 operations. Her health has deteriorated in recent months and she is now fed through a tube in her stomach. She already has one specially moulded seat, that helps to reduce pain, but this has to be swapped over from her manual wheelchair to her powered model - and back again - as she uses the two different pieces of equipment to meet different needs. Having a second moulded seat - at a cost of £1,830 - to support her specific postural needs will mean she can be transferred directly from one wheelchair to another, without having to be moved to a chair or onto her bed while her solo seat is swapped over. Mum Claire Thomas said: “The seat supplied by the NHS weighs and absolute ton and I find it very difficult to change it from one wheelchair to another on my own. Which means that if there’s no-one around to help Ria has to use whichever wheelchair the seat is fitted to, whether or not it’s the right one for her at the time. When she is poorly she prefers to be in her manual wheelchair because it is more comfortable, but this isn’t always possible.” Newlife Foundation is Central England Co-operative’s staff-elected charity, and colleagues and customers across the company’s retail area have raised more than £882,000, which has already helped 417 children with disabilities and terminal illness get the vital equipment they need, when they need it. Groby store assistant Veronica Brudenell raised £1,405 with a sponsored headshave during the summer. Her store manager, Simon Eales, said: “I am very proud of everyone here at the Groby store – Veronica for volunteering to help in this dramatic way and her colleagues for their fundraising support. As a regional retailer we always ensure that our staff-elected charity supports people in need in our area. We are delighted to have been able to help Ria and her family in this way.” This is the second time Central England Co-operative has helped Ria, working together with Newlife Foundation. Two years ago the retailer contributed £2,681 towards her powered wheelchair. Top photo: Ria Thomas. Pictured below Ria: before and after pictures of Veronica Brudenell.

BERYL: The Greatest Woman on Two Wheels Maxine Peake’s witty, charming and critically acclaimed play celebrates the life of unsung sporting legend Beryl Burton – the greatest woman on two wheels. When Beryl Charnock met keen cyclist Charlie Burton she was smitten, not only with Charlie but by the thrill and freedom found on her bike. She would out-work the men in the rhubarb fields, she could out-class the cyclists on the road, and still find time to over-knit young Denise a cycling jumper (it wasn’t meant to come down to her knees!) With her husband, daughter and cycling club at her side, she became 5 times world pursuit champion, 13 times national pursuit champion, twice road-racing world champion and still made it home in time for dinner. Beryl Burton MBE, OBE, wife and mother, cycled her way into the record books becoming world and British record-holder and, with a determination to be the best, she always cycled home a hero. Starring Rebecca Ryan, Samantha Power, Lee Toomes and Matthew Ganley. WENLO RDA BLACK TIE CHARITY BALL Wenlo RDA are pleased to announce a celebration of 25 years Wenlo RDA Group offers adults and children of all ages with physical and/or learning disabilities an opportunity to ride and look after horses to help their health, confidence and self-esteem. They aim to teach new skills and promote independence by encouraging riders to take charge of their horse in a safe and secure environment.

‘When you Mount a Horse your Disability Disappears and your Abilities Appear’ The group is wholly dependant on their team of volunteers whom are all of different ages and have a range of experience in a wealth of fields. You don’t actually have to have any horsey or riding experience to be a volunteer, as full training is given, you just need a willingness to want to help others achieve. The riders are offered a variety of activities in addition to lessons; Some may want to compete in Regional and National events organised by RDA UK Riding for the Disabled, others can enjoy riding in our beautiful countryside, Beacon Hill National Park is right on our doorstep, some riders just long to be around horses, stroking, grooming and exploring the sensory experience at their pace. Riding has many attributes, and for many disabled people it is a great joy. For those who find it difficult to get out and about, it is an escape from four walls, and for children it can often be the start of an independent life learning to balance, become more confident, mixing with new people and often animals for the first time. This can all lead to their own first steps. Every individual is encouraged to aim for attainable goals, some modest, others far more ambitious, and above all to have fun. Wenlo RDA at Meadow school of Riding is located on Deans Lane, Nr Woodhouse Eaves, Leicestershire, LE12 8TE.

NATIONAL TRUST LEICESTER ASSOCIATION The State Bed at Kedleston Hall, near Derby, was made in the 1760’s by James Gravenor to the design of Robert Adam. Like all State Beds it was very lavish and designed with the ultimate hope that it would be used by a visiting king and queen. It is the most ornate item of furniture at Kedleston. The bedposts were carved from cedar of Lebanon to resemble palm trees and had gilded roots at the bottom and branches at the top. The sumptuous silk damask canopy contained ostrich feathers and gold tassels, fringes, lace and braid. These were considered to be symbols of victory, fame and power. Although the bed received attention in the early twentieth century and in the 1970’s, last year the Trust decided that now was the time to restore it to its original glory. It has been removed from Kedleston and the wooden structure is being cleaned, repaired and the gilding restored. New silk damask fabric and upholstery is being used and all the trimmings remade in pure gold. The restored bed should be reinstated next year. In the meantime a replica bed has been installed in The State Bedchamber and visitors are allowed to climb up onto the high mattress, lie on the huge bed and see the room from the vantage point of a visiting king. Kedleston Hall is open Saturday to Thursday, 12.00 to 5.00, until 1st November. Probably the best preserved State Bed in England is at Calke Abbey. The bed was made for George I in 1715 and has Baroque upholstery and Chinese silk bed hangings. The bed was never used and apart from being displayed at an exhibition in 1870 was stored in its original crate until opened by the Trust in 1984. It is in perfect condition and is displayed in an hermetically sealed glass case. Calke Abbey is open Saturday to Wednesday, 12.30 to 5.00, until 1st November. The NT Leicester Association has an evening meeting on Tuesday 13th October when Peter Cousins will present an illustrated talk on The Boys & Girls of WWI. The meeting will be held at Braunstone West Social Centre, St Mary’s Avenue, Braunstone at 7.30pm. There will be an afternoon meeting on Wednesday 28th October at St Guthlac’s Memorial Hall, Holbrook Road, Leicester at 2.30pm when Lt Col Gerald Lesinski will present a talk on State Ceremonial. Admission to both meetings is NTLA members £2.50, visitors £4.00 including refreshments. For details of the NT Leicester Association and its Talks Service for other organisations please call 0116 2229133.

“If The River Was Whiskey”

Saturday 10th October 2015, 7:30pm Join Holymoly & The Crackers in cabaret for an evening of lively music, tall tales of hard liquor in Quorn Village Hall courtesy of Leicestershire’s Rural Touring Theatre Scheme. “Greys and Hastings – Families at War” Talk by Dave Taylor Throughout much of history the rivalry between the Grey and Hastings families has been a feature of the story of the East Midlands. We will be tracing this through the coming to prominence of both families towards the end of the late Middle Ages through Tudor Times, the English Civil War, the Restoration and beyond. Beginning with the link with the Ferrers family which brought the Greys to prominence and the relationship between the ill fated Lord Hastings and King Richard lll we will chart the fluctuating fortunes of the two families – the prominence of the Hastings “puritan” Earl of Huntingdon under Elizabeth l, the resurgence of Grey fortunes under James l through the taking of opposite sides during the Civil War, to the later fading into relative obscurity of both families. Members are free. Guests are welcome, £3 at the door. Refreshments included. Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall. Further information: Peter Bertram 01162 100 572 or

THE ROTHLEY HERITAGE TRUST PRESENTS...

ELGAR & THE GREAT WAR By Barry Collett Saturday 14th November 2015, 10.30am - 4.30pm In 1914 Elgar was at the height of his powers with a burgeoning international reputation. The Great War shattered his world, as it did for the whole of society. Dejected by a war against the nation which had first recognised his genius, he nonetheless produced some patriotic pieces to aid morale, as well as to help Belgian and Polish charities. He also produced some of his most deeply felt masterpieces. But it wasn’t all sombre gloom-some of his best and most attractive light music comes from these years. Post 1918 was a different age and the composer felt out of tune with this new era. This course will explore Elgar’s music from these years, and one session will be devoted to music from other composers affected by these turbulent times. Course fee £7 (inc. morning and afternoon refreshments). Early enrolment by post essential Cheques payable to The Rothley Heritage Trust and sent to Brenda Sutherland, 4 North St., Rothley, Leicester LE7 7NN. Please include name(s), address, ‘phone number and e-mail (if applicable) so that details of the day can be sent to you. HERMITAGE HARRIERS FINISH SEASON AS ROAD RACING CHAMPIONS Sunday 6th September saw the final fixture in the Leicestershire Road Racing League get underway, John Fraser 10. Hermitage Harriers built on their seasonlong success at the event to secure a collection of accolades: first league place for their senior men’s team beating the second place team by 30 points, first place for the vet men’s team with a 35 point lead and third place for the ladies’ team. Club Captain Darren Wilson was delighted with the results and said “for me, the achievement of the season is our ladies’ team securing third place. We have never been anywhere near to this before and the progression in our ladies’ team this year has been unprecedented.” The race was also part of the Leicestershire Road Championship series. The 10 mile race got underway in near perfect running conditions, bright sunshine with a light breeze and with 35 silver vests crossing the starting mat. This included five Harriers who have completed every road race league fixture since the season started in January: Pete Armstrong, Kelly Garrigan-Cooper, Matt Green, Paul Gregory and Katie Wright. The starting line-up also included club coach Mark Perry who continues to return to form following a foot operation earlier this year. First home for Hermitage was Matt Adcock, who claimed second place overall with an outstanding time of 54 minutes and 54 seconds - a performance which also secured him the 10 mile county championship title. Next home, and also securing a county champs title was teammate Tony Woodward who claimed fourth place overall in a time of 57:20. The dynamic duo was joined by six fellow Harriers to complete the men’s team, all of whom placed within the top 35 finishers. Fifteenth finisher Ryan Twigg and 17th place Darren Weston were just seconds apart when they finished in 59:59 and 1 hour and 8 seconds respectively, giving both men a new personal best. The next three Harriers all finished within less than 1 minute of each other. James Willoughby crossed the line more than 2 minutes quicker than he did in 2014 with his time of 1 hour 15 seconds, Paul Gregory finished off his 100% season with a fantastic time of 1 hour and 22 seconds and Shaun Coulton, who claimed first place in the vet50 category with his time of 1 hour and 43 seconds. Coulton also set a new club vet50 record on the day by around 6 and a half minutes, whilst bagging himself a 10 mile PB too. Darren Wilson completed the men’s team with his 33rd position to finish in 1 hour 1 minute and 45 seconds and set himself a new 10 mile PB in the process. As always, the ladies’ were not to be outdone and put in a solid performance securing both an A and B team on the day. The first four ladies over the finishing mat made up the A team; Bonita Robinson was first home as 13th lady overall in an impressive time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 39 seconds. She was quickly joined by fellow Harrier Louise Mason who claimed first place in the female vet50 category with her 17th place finish and time of 1 hour 14 minutes and 18 seconds. Third place for the ladies’ A team went to Zoe Sewter who raced around the 10 miles in just 1 hour 15 minutes and 7 seconds, taking over a minute and a half off her 2014 time and smashing her predicted time for the club handicap. Hannah Wheeler claimed the final place on the ladies’ A team with a fantastic performance, clocking a speedy 1 hour 19 minutes and 2 seconds, which saw her finish inside the top 50 females. Hermitage Harriers ladies’ B team was kicked off by Katie Wright who finished in 1 hour 26 minutes and 44 seconds and placed within the top 100 female finishers. Next home was Judith Brand, who not only set a new 10 mile PB of around 6 minutes but also claimed 1st place in the female vet60 category. Third place on the ladies’ B team went to Carla Johnson, who has gone from strength to strength throughout the 2015 season. Johnson finished her first 10 mile race in 1 hour 34 minutes and 54 seconds. The final lady to secure a team place in the event was Caroline Townsend, who took more than 4 minutes off her previous 10 mile best to set a new PB of 1 hour 37 minutes and 18 seconds. Of course, many other Harriers were successful in their own aims and goals. Darryl Johnson set yet another PB for 2015 with his new 10 mile PB of 1 hour 30 minutes and 43 seconds. Alan Percival also secured himself a 10 mile best when he shaved 3 minutes off his previous best to finish in 1 hour 14 minutes and 50 seconds. Taking a minute and a half off his previous PB and setting his first league race PB since 2013 was Matt Green, who clocked up an impressive finish time of 1 hour 22 minutes and 15 seconds. The race also tempted four athletes to take part in their first 10 mile race: Rob Wells who finished in 1 hour 42 minutes and 42 seconds, Charlotte Pollard who ran 10 miles for the first time ever and clocked up 1 hour 38 minutes and 42 seconds, Colin Mayes who delivered an impressive performance in the vet60 category with his 1 hour 24 minute and 53 seconds finish and, finally, Tony Noble who delivered a fantastic race in 1 hour 29 minutes and 32 seconds. Harriers will now turn their attention towards the cross country season in which they will be planning to defend the three titles they won last year: men’s division one, ladies’ division two and combined team champions. Club’s Third Trophy At Beaumanor In Three Years

On Sunday 26th July, over thirty members of North Leicester MG Club ignored the weatherman’s warnings of heavy rain, and took twenty of their octagon-badged cars to the annual Beaumanor Hall Classic Car and Transport Show. Meeting up at the Manor Hotel in Quorn, near Loughborough in Leicestershire at 8:30 am, the club’s cavalcade of classic cars set off for the short trip to the showground in Woodhouse. At this point, it was a little overcast, but the rain was holding off as had been forecast. And so it remained as the club’s mix of Midgets, MGBs, modern TFs, RV8s and single examples of MGA, MGC and TD, arrived at the hall grounds in the pre-planned, club stand set-up sequence. With the cars slotting neatly into their allocated spots, the crews quickly constructed the club “exhibition hospitality facility” (or three gazebos) and put up club-logoed bunting, flags and signs. All of this had been brought onto the site in a trailer towed by one of the Midgets. Two portable BBQs were also fired up, ready for the preparation of a breakfast of bacon baps and also for lunch later on. Almost right on cue, at around 10:30, the rain started, just as plentiful and persistent as predicted on the weather websites. Although it didn’t have a great effect on the turnout of transport exhibits, it soon became clear that the paying public were not keen on getting soaked and they stayed away in droves, unfortunately. They missed a great display of vehicles all types: vintage cars, post-war classics, super cars, hot rods, military and commercial, not to mention several single-marque club stands, including the two Leicestershire MG clubs – North and South. Even though some of the vehicles were driven away before midday, most hung on gamely until the prize giving, which was sensibly brought forward. It was well worth the wait for North Leicester MG, who repeated their success of 2013 by lifting the trophy for Best Club Stand. This award had gone to the South Leicester MG Club last year, when North Leicester MG received the runners-up cup. As always, the event organisers also provided a generous array of trophies for individual classes and ages of vehicles.

You can bring your apples and pears to be pressed into juice to take home, taste the excellent English wine from Rothley’s Kingfisher Pool Vineyard, pick up a jar of jam from fruit grown in the village, view the variety of produce grown on the new Rothley allotments and take in the artistry of the Harvest Festival flower arrangements in the church. The apple press will be in place in front of the newly restored tower of Rothley Church at the top of Church Street and staffed by experts from the Transitions Community Allotments in Loughborough. The press also comes with a pasteuriser. The juice will keep for a week in the fridge in plastic bottles, unpasteurised, or for several months in sealed glass bottles after pasteurisation. Please save your bottles and bring them along with your fruit to press. The Kingsfishers’ Pool Vineyard on Westfield Lane has been making a name for itself with its award-winning wines including a sauvignon blanc-style white called King Richard and a champagne-method sparkling rose called Spirit of Freedom (named after William Wilberforce who drafted the bill to abolish the slave trade while staying at the Rothley Court next to the vineyard). On 4th October the vineyard will offer tastings at the church and you can find out where the wines are available or place an order. Home-made jams and chutneys are always popular and there will be a stall selling the creations made from fruit grown in the back gardens of the village. Watch out for the gooseberry jam, its berries are said to be excellent this year. The flower arrangers will have prepared their usual stunning displays in the church to mark the season and we also hope to have a display of produce grown on the new site provided for the Rothley Allotment Society. The teapot will be ready for when visitors feel the need for refreshment. All this takes place on the traditional Harvest Festival Sunday in Rothley Parish Church, when worshippers gather at 9am, 10.30am and 6.30pm for festival services. The singing of the harvest hymns will remind us of the rich bounty the earth provides. For more information on the event call Charles Poole on 0116 267 3435 or Terry Sheppard on 0116 230 2931.
