Valentine’s Day...........30-33

Valentine’s Day …whether you are looking forward to it with eager anticipation, with contentment or with happy memories, there will be few of us that are not stirred when Valentine’s Day approaches. In this issue of The Vine we have a super ‘Valentine’s Feature’ to delight (starting on page 30) - read about the interesting origins of the day its’ self and look out too for our page of event all taking place in the week running up to the 14th. Talking of events, why not turn to pages 12 and 19 to learn more about Richard and Ange Bebbington’s Ivanhoe Way Challenge. Having co-founded the event in 2008 the challenge raises much needed funds for Wishes 4 Kids, plus, if that’s not enough, the couple are also running 4 marathons in 4 weeks and organising an Easter Bunny Fun Run/Walk at Hicks Lodge on Sunday 27th March. Wow! What fantastic community contributors. On the subject of charity support, another great fundraiser is the annual Race for Life for Cancer Research UK. So ladies if you fancy some fun, whilst raising some ever appreciated and much needed funds for cancer research, then jump to page 17, find out more and sign up. Talking of the outdoors our gardening advice article (nestled in to page 39) will help novice and seasoned horticulturalists alike coming in to the first few months of the year, helping you to prepare, tidy and plan all sorts of green spaces and gardens. Other clubs and societies offering their wares and services, all in Shepshed, are the Camera Club, the Rugby Football Club and Running Club. If you live in or near Shepshed and are looking for a new activity this year, then turn to page 41 to see what these great groups have to offer. Finally, if you like music, and particularly, folk music, then you might be interested in the new monthly Folk Club at Thringstone House Community Centre, called ‘Folk On The Green’. Read more about the group on page 43. So with so much to see and do, grab a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy this month’s edition of The Vine. Warmest regards,

Wishes 4 Kids & The Ivanhoe Way Challenge The 8th annual Ivanhoe Way Challenge will take place on Saturday 18th June 2016. The challenge, organised by Richard and Ange Bebbington, on behalf of Wishes 4 Kids, is for participants to walk 37 miles, around the Ivanhoe Way, in 15 hours. The ‘Ivanhoe Way 20’ and ‘Ivanhoe Way 13’ are also available to participate in this year. Richard and Ange Bebbington (above) have been supporting Wishes 4 Kids, a local charity granting wishes for very ill Leicestershire children for almost 10years. Since cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats in 2007 they’ve continued to support the charity by helping out at events, organising events and participating in many challenges, all of which are totally self-funded. These challenges include trekking to Everest Base Camp, running marathons and cycling 1400 miles from Ashby to Rome in 2013. To date, with the great support of local people, Richard and Ange have helped to raise over £75,000 for the charity. A large proportion of this total has been raised via the Ivanhoe Way Challenge which they co-founded in 2008. The challenge is to walk the full length of the Ivanhoe Way footpath, 37 miles, within 15 hours. So far over 400 walkers have completed this challenge, raising a staggering amount of money. Two years ago the Ivanhoe Way half was introduced, still being a challenge but making it more accessible to a larger number of walkers. Due to the success of this, 2016 will see the launch of the Ivanhoe Way 13, with the ‘half’ being renamed to the Ivanhoe Way 20. Starting at different times on Saturday 18th June 2016 (5am, 10am and 1pm, respectively) each challenge will follow the Ivanhoe Way footpath, all finishing in Ashby for well-deserved refreshments and celebrations. A registration fee of £22 covers the cost of the event, participants are encouraged to raise funds for Wishes 4 Kids via sponsors. More information about this event can be obtained at www.ivanhoechallenge.co.uk or by phoning Richard on 07751 259489. Carrying on the theme of setting their own sporting challenges, next year Richard and Ange will be running 4 marathons in 4 weeks, during the month of April. Running in Paris, Manchester, Brighton and finishing in London on 24th April, this will be no easy task. As with all previous challenges, this is totally self-funded therefore every penny raised goes directly towards granting wishes for very poorly children. You can sponsor Richard and Ange at: www.justgiving.com/4marathons4weeks or by text BEBB47 £5 to 70070. Also in 2016 Richard and Ange are organising an Easter Bunny Fun Run/Walk at Hicks Lodge on Sunday 27th March (see details on page 19), and a ‘Wear it Purple’ charity dinner to be held at the Lyric Rooms on Saturday May 14th. Look out for more information coming soon on these events, or email enquiries@ivanhoechallenge.co.uk or phone Ange and Richard on 07751 259 489.

Ride London for a Local Charity Alex’s Wish The Prudential Ride London is an annual cycling event that this year takes place on 31st July. It is a 100 mile bike ride that starts at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, and sends you off to cycle the closed streets of London - past Tower Bridge, down the Strand, zooming past the Ritz and off in to the Surrey countryside, with a couple of hills and you finish the day down Pall Mall to Buckingham Palace. It is an amazing day with crowds cheering you on and music and street parties along the route to keep you going. The day is very well organised. Open to everyone, the 100-mile ride is for those that want a challenge and a day to remember. Alex’s Wish has 50 places for this balloted ride that last year had 100,000 people apply for the 25,000 public places on offer Emma Moore quotes from last year’s ride ‘As a member of the team last year if you’re a beginner or an expert cyclist - you’ll love this event! I smiled from Mile 1 to 100!! Great event! Just do it!!’ We’ve now raised over £300,000 since we launched Alex’s Wish and the Prudential Ride London is one of our popular events. All money raised will be go towards new clinical trials to help bring about new promising treatments that will help to extend the lives of children and young adults living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Recently, Alex’s Wish has pledged £28,000 into a clinical trial administration post to ensure that more clinical trials can take place ensuring a quicker route to market for any potential new drug to cure or treat this generation of children with Duchenne.” To register for this event email Zoe at zoe@alexswish.co.uk and a full event pack will be sent to you with all the information required.

The Peter Le Marchant Trust The Trust was founded nearly 40 years ago with a Legacy left personally by Peter Le Marchant to his sister Clare who wanted the money to increase the quality of life for many disadvantaged and seriously ill people of all ages. Clare had enjoyed a day with friends on a narrow boat and was inspired to build the first 40ft canal boat for the enjoyment of all the above. The 1st boat was completed and fully booked for the initial season, at the end of which the demand was greater than could have ever been imagined. The consequence of which was the forming of the Trust and a 2nd boat was commissioned. The Trust has progressed throughout the subsequent years. Further boats designed incorporating greatly increased space, with showers, toilets, full cooking facilities and hydraulic lifts that could enable access for the largest of wheelchairs with safety and comfort. The demand became apparent for boats that could be used for short holidays. The Trust now takes some 4000 passengers on ‘Days of Brightness and Holidays of a lifetime’ each year. The Trust relies on both its small team of trained staff and the wonderful teams of some 75 Volunteers without whom the Trust could not provide the great welcome to all who come. The Trust was greatly honoured to receive the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for voluntary service by groups in the community 2012 which is regarded as the MBE for voluntary groups. The benefits to the Trust’s passengers are inestimable. Some deprived of speech have spoken once more, their longing to communicate their experience being so great, for many confidence has grown, others have experienced the great calming effect of moving slowly and without effort through beautiful countryside and still others have been stimulated to accept new challenges. The Trust in its turn is excited by all that they hope to see develop in future years. The need for funding is vital and we are immensely grateful to Paul at deVOL Kitchens for providing the Trust with a wonderful venue and an opportunity to host a Tea Party for all the self-giving Volunteers. Our very own Sue Harris went to the wonderful event and reported back: “On Sunday 13 December 2015 I had the privilege of attending the Peter Le Merchant Charity Tea Party at the beautiful showrooms of deVOL Kitchens at Cotes Mill, Loughborough. The event was organised by Paul O’Leary Chief Executive Officer and Helen Parker Creative Director of deVOL Kitchens together with Richard Tear Chief Executive Officer and Clare Le Marchant-Connell, sister of the late Peter Le Marchant who left the Legacy to her. The aim was to thank the small team of trained staff and the wonderful teams of 75 Volunteers for all the hardwork and without whom the Trust could not provide the great welcome to thousands of passengers who come to experience day trips and holidays on the charities well equipped boats on the waterways. The Tea Party was introduced by Richard Teare and Clare Le Marchant-Connell with presentations to the staff and volunteers and then a lovely buffet with an array of beautiful homemade cakes and sandwiches made by the volunteers and even a cake made by Richard Teare.. We were then given the opportunity to look round the showrooms of deVOL at their kitchens, Handmade English Furniture, gifts etc on the showrooms three floors... Well worth a visit.” We know that with the help of many so many more people can experience for themselves the sheer joy of a new and wonderful adventure. BE STRONGER, BRAVER & PINKER WITH RACE FOR LIFE IN 2016 Leicestershire women are being urged to get the Year off to a great start by signing up now to one of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2016 events! The charity is calling on women of all shapes and sizes to show cancer who’s boss by choosing their event - Race for Life 5k, or 10k – and committing to take part at Victoria Park, Leicester, Loughborough Town Centre or Pretty Muddy at Prestwold Hall, Leicestershire. Motivation to keep fit and healthy can slip as the cold weather drags on... That’s where Race for Life comes in. The 5k and 10k events at Leicester take place on Sunday, July 10. The Loughborough 5k event takes place on Sunday, June 12. So women who sign up now will be creating their own compelling goal to aim for later in the year, when the warmer weather makes staying on the sofa less tempting. Amy Hall, Cancer Research UK’s Leicestershire Event Manager, said: “Signing up to take part in Race for Life is a great way for women of all ages to commit to get a little more active. “Pledging to take part, alongside thousands of like minded women, can be a great incentive to get fitter. Planning to raise money for life-saving research could prove more of a goal to get up and get moving than the usual New Year’s resolution to shift the winter pounds.” One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner. Last year, Race for Life Pretty Muddy took place for the first time in Leicestershire. The new women-only, non-competitive 5k obstacle course – with mud – received a whole-hearted welcome from the thousands of women who took part. Last year, 8667 women took part in Race for Life in Leicestershire and raised a fantastic £542,764. This year, organisers hope to see the same level of support from local ladies. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across East Midlands and beyond.

HORSE LOGGING COURSES AT BRADGATE PARK Following the success of all the horse logging courses we ran in partnership with the bradgate park team in 2015,I am excited to announce that we will be running more courses in 2016. A beginners level and for those who have completed the beginners course we are offering an advanced course also, to extend their experience further. These two day courses will give members of the public the opportunity to experience the joy of working with heavy horses in real life scenarios within the beautiful setting of bradgate park. If you are already experienced with horses and would like the chance to try something different, or do not have any experience at all but still have a passion to work with horses then this is for you. Last year we catered for a variety of lovely people that crossed both of these descriptions ,and I must say on a personal note it was a joy to observe the fact that they all shared a common interest in the horses and the work they carry out and it is with great pride that I was able to witness these groups of people sharing the trust and experience of my two best buddies, Breeze my 14.2 cob gelding and queenie my 16.3 comtois mare. Over the last three years ,the bradgate team have supported the work me and my horses carry out. They quickly realised the benefits of using low impact methods within their forestry operations and recognised the interest members of the public showed towards the horse logging and together we developed the courses on offer. As well as the course we run the bradgate team engage our services within Bradgate Park and Swithland Woods , we extract timber from the woodland causing very little impact on the flora and fauna within the woodland floor, in fact the action of the timber being dragged by the horses disturbs the seed bed within the ground layer of the woodland and natural regeneration occurs improving the diversity within the woodland. The trees are being felled in the woodland as a thinning programme to improve the quality of the remaining stock, giving them more space to grow into impressive specimens offering food and shelter to a diverse range of life forms. Horse logging courses cost £90 are available on the following dates: February 13th and 14th (advanced course) • March 5th and 6th • April 16th and 17th • May 7th and 8th • May 28th and 29th (advanced course) To book on to a course or for further information contact Stuart on 07547 978 172 / 01509 233392 or via the Bradgate Park Estate office 0116 234 1850.

NATIONAL TRUST LEICESTER ASSOCIATION This year the National Trust will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter who was a great supporter of the Trust. Beatrix was born in Kensington, London, in July 1866 and all of her education was with a Governess. She first visited the Lake District on a family holiday, aged 16, and “fell in love” with the area. She also became acquainted with Canon Hardwick Rawnsley, a Lakeland parson, who led campaigns to protect the area and who was one of the founders of the National Trust. Beatrix supported the Trust all of her life and followed their principles in managing her land and maintaining traditional buildings and farming methods. Beartrix Potter’s first book, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”, was turned down by six publishers so in 1901, encouraged by Rawnsley, she met the costs of publication herself. The book and all of her subsequent books were a great success and produced large sums in royalties. In the early 1900’s Beatrix sold some of her drawings in the USA and donated the proceeds to the National Trust. Once her royalties began to grow she used the income to purchase farms and land throughout the Lake District and supported her tenants with their conservation. Among other properties, she purchased Hill Top (left) at Sawrey, near Windermere, in 1905, for her own use and Castle Cottage Farm in 1909, which became her marital home in 1913 when she married William Heelis, a Lake District Solicitor who had acted for her on her property purchases. She lived in “The Lakes” for the rest of her life and became a pillar of the farming community. Beatrix Potter died in December 1943 and left fifteen farms and over 4,000 acres of land to the National Trust and in her will stipulated that Hill Top Farm was to be kept exactly as it had been when she lived in it. The NT headquarters building in Swindon is named “Heelis” in her memory. Hill Top is open daily, except Friday, from mid February to the end of October and receives thousands of visitors a year. The National Trust also run the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead, which displays many of Beatrix’s paintings. The NT Leicester Association has an evening meeting on Tuesday 9th February when Cynthia Brown will present an illustrated talk on The Founders of Vaughan Collage. The meeting will be held at The Braunstone West Social Centre, St Mary’s Avenue, Braunstone at 7.30pm. There is also an afternoon meeting on Wednesday 24th February at St Guthlac’s Memorial Hall, Holbrook Road, Leicester at 2.30pm when Derek Holloway will present an talk on Clarice Cliff. Admission to both meetings is NTLA members £2.50, visitors £4.00 including refreshments. BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE With the electrification of the Midland Main Line postponed and now back on again, but later than originally planned to be completed means the bridge linking the two GCR railways will also be delayed. After meetings with Network Rail in Derby and London, GCR plc, with the cooperation of Network Rail, will take over the management of the total project to reunify the two sections at Loughborough which will include the missing bridge. GCR’s project managers FJD will take over the management of the whole project on the railways behalf and work with Network Rail to secure the required consents and collaboration. With this delay the GCR now has the opportunity to review the design and look at combining the new bridge with a bridge over Railway Terrace by using the two Reading bridges donated by Network Rail, also some work can be carried out on the embankment and the canal bridge. The good news is that after two years hard work collecting the total has reached over the £1 million mark.

NUNCKLEY HILL PROGRESS Since the opening of the Mountsorrel Branch at the end of October work on the Heritage Centre at Nunckley Hill has been rapid and very impressive with the Heritage Centre building almost complete with many other buildings making good progress. The water treatment system has been installed and a water crane will be erected in the new year to supply the steam engines, the platform only needs its name board which is being made by a volunteer. The Heritage Centre should be open in early April.

For all the latest information visit the website at: www.gcrailway.co.uk or phone Loughborough on 01509 632323.

Fostering Doesn’t Always Mean Having To Say Goodbye 2016 looks certain to bring more children into foster care in all areas of Leicester and Leicestershire. These will be babies, toddlers and schoolage children as well as groups of brothers and sisters. All of them will need to be part of a loving family whether it’s for a few months or for life. But what happens if you foster and become very attached to a child only to have to say goodbye when it’s time for them to move on? Training and support help a lot, but it will always be a wrench. Short-term carers say they shed a tear one day then start preparing for the next child who needs them. Children often stay in touch and this is very reassuring for carers. Short-term fostering is one of the most rewarding things anyone could do – seeing children learn to laugh and play again. It’s a bit like being a stepping stone for a child, helping them prepare to return home to their families or move onto a new permanent family. Short-term fostering isn’t for everyone and some people decide that permanent fostering for one or two children is the best option for them. Permanent fostering is similar to adoption and a child will become part of your family for life – it is fostering without having to say goodbye. Whether you are considering short-term or permanent fostering or wish to find out about short breaks for disabled children, Leicester’s Fostering and Adoption Centre has a friendly, experienced team to advise and support you. They welcome calls from single people, couples and families, so please don’t rule yourself out. You could be just the family a child has been waiting for. Find out about the outstanding support and training carers receive, along with payments that reflect skills and commitment, regular placements and planned breaks. To find out more about fostering please call the Fostering and Adoption Centre on 0116 454 4500 or visit www. leicester.gov.uk/fostering for details of regular events.

Jump for Heart Research UK This is Amanda Bargh (aka AJ) whose beloved father Peter Pears died suddenly in his sleep in January 2015 at the age of 67. He died of coronary heart disease and this is why Amanda has chosen to fundraise for Heart Research UK to help them fund research into treatment and cures. To remember her dad, Amanda is raising money for Heart Research UK by doing a Skydive on 5th March and has already raised over £600. Peter was a fit and healthy man who cycled hundreds of miles every month and was never ill. ‘He touched the hearts of everyone he met’ says Amanda. ‘We miss him every minute of every day. His good humour, caring and loving nature and his thirst to enjoy every ounce of life are some of the things that will stay with me forever. We often talked about doing a parachute jump together.... my dad was as daft as I am. It seems fitting that I do this jump in his memory to raise as much money as I can for Heart Research UK. I know he’ll be with me on the day to keep me safe’. Heart Research UK is a national charity which has been funding ground-breaking medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease for nearly 50 years now. Current projects include a study at the University of Cambridge to develop a heart attack prediction test, as well as supporting a children’s rehab project which is being rolled out at various pilot sites across the UK including Great Ormond Street Hospital. Coronary heart disease is still the UK’s biggest single killer with nearly 75,000 deaths a year, so Heart Research UK is trying to prevent people getting the illness in the first place, with a range of activities to ensure that those in communities around the UK live healthier, happier and longer lives. Heart Research UK is hosting “In Memory” skydives this year, such as a “Jump for your Mum on Mother’s Day” opportunity on 6th March, or a “Jump for your Dad on Father’s Day” on 19th June, or indeed another date which is sentimental to you could also be available. The Story of Valentine Flowers, chocolates, hearts and romance. That’s what Valentine’s day is all about, right? Well, maybe not... In the third century, the Roman Empire was ruled by Emperor Claudius II Gothicus. He was nicknamed Claudius the Cruel because of his harsh leadership and his tendency for getting into wars and abusing his people. In fact, he was getting into so many wars during the third century that he was having a difficult time recruiting enough soldiers. Claudius believed that recruitment for the army was down because Roman men did not want to leave their loves or families behind, so he cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. Thousands of couples saw their hopes of matrimony dashed by the single act of a tyrant. And no one seemed interested in standing up to the emperor. But a simple Christian priest named Valentine did come forward and stood up for love. He began to secretly marry soldiers before they went off to war, despite the emperor’s orders. In 269 A.D., Emperor Claudius found out about the secret ceremonies. He had Valentine thrown into prison and deemed that he would be put to death. As Valentine was awaiting execution, he fell in love with a blind girl who happened to be the jailer’s daughter. On the eve of his execution, with no writing instruments available, Valentine is said to have written her a sonnet in ink that he squeezed from violets and signed it, “from your Valentine.” Legend has it that his words made the blind woman see again. St. Valentine gave his life so that young couples could be bonded together in holy matrimony. They may have killed the man, but not his spirit. Even centuries after his death, the story of Valentine’s self-sacrificing commitment to love was legendary in Rome. Eventually, he was granted sainthood and the Catholic Church decided to create a feast in his honour. They picked February 14 as the day of celebration because of the ancient belief that birds (particularly lovebirds, but also owls and doves) began to mate on that very day. There are plenty of stories about the origins of Valentine’s Day and how it came to be common place in our annual celebrations and through a mix of all of the events over the centuries, we’ve reached Valentine’s Day as we know it. This Valentine’s Day, what are you doing to keep the love in your relationship burning? While giving a gift and card, having a candlelight dinner, and sharing special words of love are all important, the true spirit of Valentine’s Day needs to last throughout the year too!

Cash Boost For Local Charity ‘My Chance’

Love Loughborough has donated £400 to My Chance, a local charity that runs creative workshops for residents and vulnerable members of the community in textiles, sewing, upcycling and furniture restoration. Based at the Falcon Centre in Loughborough, My Chance’s aim is to reuse many of the donated items that come in to the centre to create new items to sell as well as teaching new skills to residents in sewing and furniture upcycling. One of Love Loughborough’s member businesses, LOFT Clothing in Ashby Square, receives items from My Chance to sell and the shop also provides a foundation for residents to volunteer and go on to secure work placements and employment. Jen Johnson from My Chance said: “We are really pleased to receive this money, it will help us to buy a new sewing machine. Our creative workshops provide an opportunity for residents to learn new crafts in a relaxed and stimulating environment, boost confidence and reduce social isolation. We can see as many as 6 participants in a daily workshop. Malcolm Heaven, BITC Business Connector, said: “I’ve seen the fabulous work done by My Chance so it’s great that M&S and Love Loughborough have been working together to support them. The concept of upcycling and creating products to sell through a modern retail outlet is a big step forward from the traditional charity shop, and I wish them every success.” Photo taken in LOFT Clothing. The Monday Club Cropston, Thurcaston, Anstey & Rothley Our Christmas Lunch meeting held at the Birstall Golf Club on December 14th, was once again a successful conclusion to a very happy 2015. The food was delicious, the room brilliantly decorated and our entertainment was excellently provided by the singers of the Choir, from the Church of the Good Shepherd, Loughborough who were dressed as Father Christmas and sang a miscellany of Christmas Songs and Carols to which we were encouraged to join in when we remembered the words! After a delightful afternoon we then left to face the last minute shopping!! For the first Meeting on 11th January 2016 the weather, although grey and cold, at least remained without rain, as fortunately the membership was enthusiastic to return to some normality after the festivities of last month. The enthusiasm was rewarded by our entertainer for the afternoon, Mr. Anthony Sharrat, who equipped with two guitars, namely a French Canadian Larrivee and a 1960 Kim Bara, sang along with several well-known pieces such as “Streets of London” by Ralph Mactell – “Auntie Flo” by John Prentice – “Little Mountain” an old religious song – “40 Shades of Green” by Johnnie Cash – “Chrystal Chandeliers” by Charlie Pride. The membership appreciated the opportunity to join in with the choruses and the Show concluded with a request for a real favourite by John Denver “Country Roads”. A brilliant start to the New Year. Our next Meeting will take place on February 8th when our Treasurer, Mrs Gill Smart will show slides of her visit to “Buckingham Palace” during which her husband Jeffrey was awarded the OBE for service to the creation of the Heartlink Childrens Charity. This is an enthralling talk, so please try to come along for an enjoyable afternoon in the Hall at the back of the Evangelical Chapel in Station Road Cropston, (parking by courtesy of “The Bradgate Arms” opposite). The Meeting will start at 2.15pm and refreshments are served after the talk. Gill will be pleased to answer any questions you may have about the Ceremony. Subsequent Meetings will be: March 14th - Mr.Chris Tarratt of Tarratt Jewellers. “Forgers, Furbishers and Duty Dodgers”. April 11th - A talk given by “The Edinburgh Woollen Company”. May - An Outing to be confirmed. June 13th - Mr. James Green- “The History of Perfume”. July - Our Strawberry Cream Tea. August 8th - A talk about REMAP “The Charity with the CAN DO attitude”. September 12th - Our Harvest Festival and Brian Kibble talking about “A walk in the Park - East to West”. October 10th - Mr. Derek Holloway - talking about “Inverted Jenny” a Postage Stamp. November 14th - Penny Hodgeson talking about “How to Survive Christmas” With Crackers and Mince Pies. Gardening In The Vine... Welcome…Spring is nigh! Now is the time to look at summer flowering bulbs - a wonderful addition to borders and a great infill between perennials and shrubs. Try the Bishop series of Dahlias: Llandaff (bright red with black leaves - left); Leicester (pink) and York (pale yellow). Cannas’ 100cm height gives an exotic feel to borders – Wyoming (bright orange) or Tropicanna Black (red flowers and black leaves). Try Apaganthus and Lilies. All of the above should be started off in pots filled with multi-purpose compost, initially in a conservatory or greenhouse, before planting out in May when the threat of frost is over. Other bulbs such as Crocosmias and Irises will survive throughout the winter in borders. There are many Irises to choose from – tall bearded varieties such as Jane Phillips (pale mauve flowers - top right), or Sable (dark purple flowers - above right), with both growing to 90cm. Smaller varieties such as Iris Pallida (lavender blue flowers) grows to 60cm. Look on the internet and in books for colours and varieties to suit any border. There are several sizes of Crocosmias to choose from - flowering from August onwards. Taller varieties such as Lucifer (dark red flowers); Masonorum (orange flowers) and smaller varieties such as George Davidson (lemon/yellow flowers) or Emberglow (orange flowers). It’s definitely worth adding some summer bulbs into your garden.

Things to do in the garden this month...

• Clean greenhouses, sheds and tools • Prepare vegetable beds and cover with cloches • Prune evergreen hedges • Buy potatoes and leave them to chit in a cool dry place • Divide snowdrop clumps if finished flowering • Prune winter flowering shrubs if they have finished flowering – see websites such as Crocus and The RHS website. The RHS Pruning and Training manual by Christopher Brickell and David Joyce is a good reference book • Move established deciduous shrubs - but not if the ground is waterlogged as the roots will rot • Cut back any ornamental grasses before new growth appears

Plants of the month

Hellebores are small evergreen perennials that start to flower from February through to April. Cut off old leaves to see the flowers and then cut off the old flower heads in May. Joanne Kennedy set up Garden Blueprints in 2006 and since then she has helped hundreds of clients with their design and planting requirements.

Shepshed & District Camera Club Shepshed and District Camera Club was formed in 1976. Prior to this a photography evening class had been running at Hind Leys Community College. When the tutor decided that he no longer wished to teach the course his students who wished to carry on pursuing their hobby decided to form a club affiliated to the college. Further members were recruited, a Committee elected and Shepshed and District Camera Club was in being. In 2007 Shepshed and District Camera Club moved their headquarters to the Community Centre on Chanwood Road, Shepshed, where they have remained ever since. In the early days activities centred around monochrome photography and printing. But as members became more experienced many became involved in colour printing and more recently in digital photography. The club runs various activities. A series of competitions is run internally amongst the members and competitions are also held with local clubs and societies. In addition there are talks from local lecturers, practical nights, quizzes and social events. New and prospective members are always welcome!
