Shakespeare is for everyone. We are driven by a passion for Shakespeare and for live theatre, certain in the knowledge that a deep engagement with his work can change lives. We see that transformation every day in schools around the country and we hear it in the conversations we have with audiences everywhere. Our artistic programme in this extraordinary 400th anniversary year has celebrated Shakespeare’s continuing relevance. Never have his words seemed more resonant than now, at a time of change and uncertainty. During the year, we have shared those words with millions of people across the world. Chinese actors have performed our new translations of King Lear and Henry V to audiences in Beijing and Shanghai. RSC Actors have thrilled New Yorkers with our ‘King & Country’ cycle. And children from Blackpool to Margate have introduced their parents to Shakespeare’s work through their own performances, developed as part of our education programmes. The power of the text, combined with our rehearsal room techniques, raises aspirations. Again and again, we have seen students rise to the challenge with grace, energy and new-found confidence. Shakespeare and arts education equips you for life. We have also brought fun, entertainment and challenge to our theatre audiences. We have welcomed more people to our theatre in Shakespeare’s home town than ever before, with over a million day visits. Our ticket offers have allowed young people to attend for a fiver and through our ‘relaxed performances’ families with autistic children have been able to enjoy theatre together. And we have opened our doors to theatre makers and partners from all over the country to collaborate with us and make work in new ways. As a Company, we continue to push boundaries – from the digital experimentation we developed in The Tempest to our commitment to amateur theatre-makers, live streaming rehearsals from 14 locations for our national tour of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The RSC is a truly national company, with our heart in the Midlands and a collaborative hand extended to regional theatres, schools, artists and audiences everywhere.

We broke new ground with The Tempest, the culmination of our 400th anniversary year. Working in collaboration with Intel, and in association with The Imaginarium Studios, we used performance capture technology to render an animated character on stage for the first time. It took two years to develop the technology to make Ariel’s avatar fly, creating a sense that Prospero’s island is a place where magic truly happens. Our audiences joined us at the forefront of digital innovation, as we led the way in combining art and technology to make new forms of live theatre entertainment.

The hands-on experience uncovers the secrets of our theatre-making both past and present, sharing costumes, props and the stories behind our productions with visitors from around the world.
We worked with local community groups to develop inclusive content for The Play’s The Thing, which includes new augmented-reality British Sign Language content.

apprentices are currently working across the RSC sites in a variety of departments and roles We make all our productions in our hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon, with skilled crafts people who have developed their trade with the Company over many years. Through training and apprenticeships, we share these specialist skills with a new generation. Our plans to redevelop our Costume Workshop will help us open up theatre careers to more people and to showcase our behind-the-scenes activity through new public tours. We also launched Next Generation in partnership with regional theatres and Associate Schools. The scheme will give 100 talented young people, who would not normally have the opportunity, a chance to explore a career in acting, directing or working backstage.

Our live cinema broadcasts were seen by audiences in 20 countries, including China for the first time. Chinese companies used the first of our actor and audience friendly translations to stage King Lear at the NCPA in Beijing and Henry V at the Shanghai Dramatic
Arts Centre (SDAC), forming part of our cultural, artistic and educational exchange with China. In parallel, we explored Chinese classics from the centuries in which Shakespeare was writing, identifying new texts for performance to an English-speaking audience
and premiering Snow In Midsummer in the Swan Theatre. This powerful tale of social injustice, performed by a British East Asian cast, was written by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig and based on the classical Chinese drama by Guan Hanqing.
Closer to home, we enjoyed working with 10 regional partner theatres, eleven Lead Associate Schools, and 128 Associate Schools creating the best first experience of Shakespeare for teachers, young people and their families.

From school halls to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, we produced 31 productions, 20 research and development projects with 107 theatre makers, playing throughout the year in Stratford-upon-Avon and London, and on tour around the UK, USA, Canada and Australia.

People joined us for a summer celebration with a difference. We invited Slung Low to work with us to create a ‘Fairy Portal Camp’ full of dancing, fire and feasting to coincide with the most magical time of the year in Shakespeare’s day – Midsummer.
Events, exhibitions, family activities, touch tours, audio described, captioned, semi-integrated signed and relaxed performances, our BP £5 tickets for 16 – 25 year olds, online resources and the many activities of RSC Education, are just some of the many ways that we reach the widest possible audience, making sure that Shakespeare is for everyone.

2016/17 was a successful year, with increased expenditure reflecting the exceptional programme for the 2016 Shakespeare 400th anniversary year. We were able to deliver a surplus of £4m* and transferred the available unrestricted surplus to a reserve for future investment in our work.
Royalties & other income £8.5m / 12.3%
We were able to invest an additional £0.4m in our learning and participation work, mainly related to a new collaboration with the University of Birmingham at The Other Place.
Royalties and other income increased by £3.7m due to additional income from Matilda The Musical and Les Misérables. Other costs increased by £0.3m because of related expenditure.
Net fundraising and other grants was £3.2m. Compared to the previous year, the unrestricted element increased by an underlying £0.2m, after adjusting for a £0.4m asset donation in 2015/16. The restricted part reduced by £2.1m because of income raised in 2015/16 mainly for the 400th anniversary programming and Arts Council England’s Catalyst programme.
Net income from subsidiaries reduced by £0.1m in the year, mainly from the recent expansion of the Arden Hotel.
We maintained theatre operations costs at broadly the same level.
