A

BALANCE IS THE KEY!

At the end of February, I had the pleasure of touring several Waterloo County farms in conjunction with the Branch’s Annual Meeting. It was a great day, made even better by the fact that I got to see my first calf being born – something I have looked forward to since my first day with the Branch! Dave Wagler of Green Acre Farms Ltd. in New Hamburg helped to deliver a Lavanguard heifer calf while his dad, Gary, gave me the playby-play. As intriguing as the birth itself was, it was also fascinating to learn about the Wagler’s philosophy when it comes to work-life balance. Though they keep cameras on the birthing pens, Gary said he isn’t one to camp out in the barn whenever a cow is calving. If a cow goes into labour when they’re finished chores for the day, they go into the house and wait to see what happens the following morning. “What you hope you find,” says Gary, “is the calf up on her feet running around.” While I have no doubt the Waglers work their fair share of long hours, it’s nice to know they value time outside of the barn too. Whether it’s an evening off from milking now and again, or a day spent away from the farm at a sale, farm tour or show, it’s important to carve out time in your schedule to enjoy quality time with your family and friends. After all, as most of us already know, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!”

I

MILK + HIGH TYPE = SUCCESS

I am always impressed that the cows appearing at the top of the production list are also high-classifying cows. In this edition’s Superior Production listing (see page 40), 26 of the 30 cows listed are classified Very Good or Excellent. That is a true testament to the breeders of these animals that they are developing cows with great type, but also ones that know how to pay the bills with above-average production. Research has shown that the higher a two-year-old is classified, the more she will milk on average and the longer her herd life will be. What more could you ask for in a cow than milking above average and continuing to do so for many lactations. That is a successful cow and with a barn full of them, success for the producer. You see the dollar value of fat and protein on the milk cheque but don’t forget the value on the classification of the cow and her family that produces that milk. So take a look at your own herd and determine what cows are meeting that criteria and then relate that back to your two-year-olds. The cows with the undesirable physical traits are not going to be the cows that you are going to see in your herd later on. That is when you need to decide which cows are profitable today and will transmit profitability in the future.

FOR THE PAST FOUR AND A HALF YEARS, KRIS MACLEOD HAS BEEN THE ONTARIO HOLSTEIN REP FOR EASTERN ONTARIO. Kris’s passion for the Holstein breed helped pave the way for a career he refers to as nothing short of exciting. “From being on the road, to attending shows and planning other special and regional events, it never seems to get old,” he says.

DAVE JOHNSTON IS THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE ONTARIO HOLSTEIN BRANCH BOARD OF DIRECTORS. ALONG WITH HIS BROTHER, DOUG, HE OWNS AND OPERATES MAPLEVUE FARMS LOCATED OUTSIDE OF LISTOWEL IN PERTH COUNTY.

Before he started with the Branch, Kris worked for three years as a feed salesman for the Co-op Agriest. Prior to that, he was home on his family’s farm in Dunvegan, Ontario (located in Glengarry county) working with a small herd of 26 registered Holsteins for seven years. Always a joker, Kris says he needed that time to recover from college; truthfully, he was developing some of the very skills he uses each day as a rep for the Branch.

As a successful dairy and cash crop operation, Maplevue is home to 175 purebred Holsteins with a classification of 6EX, 41 VG, 22 GP and a BCA of 239-242-238. Seed wheat, seed soybeans, alfalfa and corn are grown on the approximately 1400-acre farm, which has been in the Johnston family since 1893.

Growing up, Kris was heavily involved in 4-H and enjoyed attending shows each year. He places high value on the contact he had with other breeders at those shows, and credits them for much of the knowledge he has about the breed today. Not only did these individuals influence Kris at shows, they taught him how to breed better cattle. “The strength of the Holstein breed in Canada has a lot to do with the quality of breeders we have and the fact that they aren’t afraid to share their knowledge,” Kris says. “In fact, many of them are happy to see someone else succeed who has put the time and effort in.”

Dave brings a wealth of experience to the Board, including 24 years as an auctioneer at OLEX, where he sells dairy cattle every Thursday and last Tuesday of the month. He’s hopeful that this experience, combined with his experience on the farm, will allow him to bring a fresh perspective and contribute in a meaningful way as a Board member for Western Ontario.

GROWING A DREAM Growing a Dream

IN THE BRIGHT AND SPACIOUS OFFICE ATTACHED TO THE MAIN BARN AT STEWARDSON DAIRY IN LAMBTON COUNTY, THREE AERIAL PHOTOS GRACE A WHITE WALL. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE TELL-TALE SILO IN EACH SHOT, NONE OF THE THREE LOOK THE SAME; EACH PHOTO FEATURES A NEW BARN OR AN ADDITION TO AN EXISTING STRUCTURE THAT WAS ADDED OVER TIME. In addition to sprucing up the office décor, the photos serve another purpose: they tell a wonderful story about a family who has worked hard to expand their operation, and perhaps more importantly, succeeded at improving things at every step along the way. “Farming is a great business because you can constantly improve,” says Brenda who grew up at Hanesholm Holsteins, a Master Breeder herd in Wentworth County. “You can improve your genetics, the quality of your product and the environment you create for your cows.” On their spacious property in Thedford, Ontario, a small community located a few kilometers off the shores of Lake Huron, Jeff and Brenda Stewardson milk 225 purebred Holsteins in a free-stall barn. In just over two decades, they’ve taken a group of grade cattle and developed them into a fully classified and registered herd. They’ve faced a few obstacles along the way – lack of time and money in the early days being their biggest complaints – but they’ve managed to take their dairy operation to the next level and are proud of what they’ve accomplished.

The couple met while attending Centralia College of Agriculture in the 1980s. They graduated in 1985, and later that fall, Jeff began leasing the barn from his parents. Taking a different direction in farming, Jeff ’s parents had sold the cows and quota a year earlier and the barn sat empty for a short while before Jeff bought quota and started milking 20 cows there. In 1987, while still leasing the barn and milking 40 cows, Jeff and Brenda married and rented a house one conces-

sion over. They went on to purchase the farm in 1989, and though the original barn is currently being taken down, the Stewardsons are still milking at Jeff ’s home farm today. In 2001, the family undertook their first major expansion and built a new open free-stall sand barn, allowing them to grow to 100 head. Through numerous expansions since, they now have the capacity to milk 300 head. Jeff says over the years, he’s learned that doing what’s best for the cows will pay dividends in production and longevity down the road. “It’s a balancing act,” he says. “You’re in business, but you need to have the upmost concern for the animals too.” To this end, the family completed its most recent expansion – a brand new open heifer barn with space for 225 heifers. Large, translucent doors on the south end allow for maximum daylight to come through to the youngest animals, mimicking what they would find in their natural environment. Their three children, Nicole (22), Dylan (20) and Dan (17) are all interested in farming and play an important role in keeping the operation running smoothly. Nicole is currently completing her degree in Agricultural Science at the University of Guelph and helps with milking when she’s home during the summer months. Dan attends high school locally and is involved in all aspects of the farm, including helping with the calves, crops and maintaining equipment. Dylan,

who graduated from Ridgetown College last year, is at home on the farm full-time, “living his dream.” Two of his main passions in life are hockey stats and good cows, and these days, he takes care of the majority of breeding decisions on the farm.

three-year-old owned by Dylan, placed 1st her Sr 3YR class and went on to win Reserve Grand Champion at the Lambton County Show last year. As first-time exhibitors at the Lambton show, the family was surprised with their placing.

Dylan favours big, deep-bodied cows with well-attached udders and treats each one individually in order to mate them to the best of his ability. He’s currently using Windbrook, Lauthority, Stanley Cup, Sanchez and Fever as his sires of choice, though he says they have used a lot of Denzel in the past to achieve the big-bodied animals he likes.

Brenda explains that when Dylan first talked to them about showing Kailey, she and Jeff were supportive, yet unsure how he would pull it off given the family’s lack of experience showing cattle. “‘You can do it,’ we told him, ‘but it’s in your hands.’”

Jeff says that previously, the focus on their farm wasn’t on breeding; it was more on “just getting going and surviving.” With Dylan’s expertise, however, breeding has garnered more attention recently. Much of Dylan’s experience came from 4-H dairy events and encouragement from Murray Reissner, a long time breed advisor.

Thankfully, Dylan received a tremendous amount of encouragement at the show from fellow 4-Hers, Chris and Ryan Stevens and acknowledges he couldn’t have done it without their help. Kailey is now in her second lactation and has an even better-looking heifer in the herd, Dylan says. She’s currently in calf to Windbrook and due to calve in July. Kailey’s portrait is proudly displayed in the Stewardson’s office next to the aerial shots of their farm. In fact, along with several young sire daughters she’s one of the only cows they’ve ever had pictured, though after her success last year, more may follow. Before Kailey, the Stewardsons had never really considered showing Holsteins. Now, Dylan is starting to see the

Kailey, an 85 point


potential in some of their other cows and he’s considering exhibiting at next year’s show. “We might just be hooked!” he says. Other herd favourites include Stewardson Talent Shantel, an EX-2E fourth lactation cow with a 93-point mammary system and 93-point rump structure; and Stewardson Talent Julia, a VG-88 fourth lactation cow the Stewardsons consider the most dairy and best-uddered animal in the barn. The Stewardson’s current BCA is 224-233-228 and their current classification sits at an impressive four Excellent, 30 Very Good, 137 Good Plus, with the remaining scored Good.

In the future, Dylan would like to get to a point where embryos out of their cows are in high demand, but for now he’s happy flushing their top cows to build good genetics within the herd. He says he enjoys watching the herd grow up and seeing them improve with one generation to the next. The sentiment isn’t far from the way Jeff and Brenda feel about their own children. “It’s great to see them so enthusiastic,” Jeff says. In fact, with Dylan at home full-time, the family is starting to think more about the future of Stewardson Dairy. They’ve recently started the first stages of succession planning and earlier last month, Dylan started buying into the farm with the hopes of possibly running it with Nicole and Dan one day. His recently established prefix, DND Holsteins, is in place to support that partnership, though Dylan says things are open at this point and the acronym could eventually come to stand for a variety of things.

With their energies now in succession, Jeff and Brenda are looking forward to slowing down a bit – at least for a little while. They’re both still currently involved in the operation, acting as managers of the farm and its three full-time and four part-time employees. Brenda is the farm’s bookkeeper and when Jeff ’s not tied up on the farm, he is involved with Blue Water Milk Transport Co-op and acts as a delegate for Gay Lea Foods Co- operative. Having an extra set of hands in the barn means that Brenda doesn’t have to milk cows anymore, which she has mixed feelings about. “I miss being a part of it, but I don’t miss being up at 4:30 every morning!” The couple is looking forward to doing some traveling and perhaps a little more camping in the summer. They’ve already booked a trip to Ireland this spring and plan to visit a former employee from Cork, who spent six weeks working on their farm last year. The Stewardsons are optimistic about the future of the farm, though they admit their objectives have changed somewhat to encompass Dylan’s goals. What hasn’t changed over the years, however, is their commitment to always doing what is best for the cows. In terms of the story the aerial farm photos hanging in the office will tell down the road, it remains to be seen. “My answer two years ago would have been so different,” says Jeff. “I think we just have to keep getting better.”

Ontario Holstein Branch 30th Annual General Meeting

A

THE 30TH ANNUAL ONTARIO HOLSTEIN BRANCH MEETING TOOK PLACE ON FEBRUARY 29, THE FIRST TIME EVER ON A LEAP YEAR, AT THE HOLIDAY INN IN CAMBRIDGE.

A day before the meeting, 12 area farms opened their doors to the public for the farm tours. There were free-stalls, tie-stalls, new barns and old, as well as some of the best-looking cattle in all of Waterloo County to be seen! Later that evening, a wine and cheese reception was hosted by EastGen, with a variety of wines being served and local cheeses being sampled from Thornloe Cheese, Bright Cheese and Oak Grove Cheese Factory. The reception set the stage for one of the highlights of the evening – the honouring of Ontario’s 13 Master Breeders! Ralph Martin of Ontowa Farm Inc. and Wayne Wagler of Claynook Farms read profiles of each Master Breeder prepared by the Branch, while a photo slideshow of the honourees was shown. Each Master Breeder was then presented with an engraved milk jug to commemorate their family’s exceptional achievement. Following the recognition of the Master Breeders, General Manager Jason French shared some Branch history from the past 30 years while the Past Presidents of the Ontario Holstein Board of Directors were presented with an Ontario Holstein pin from Branch secretary, Mary Poirier. The crowd also showed their appreciation to Mary for her hard work and dedication in the 30 years she has served as Branch office secretary. With the formal presentations completed, the highly-anticipated fun auction was kicked off by auctioneer Nello Romagnoli. An impressive 33 lots were up for auction, including an Ebyholme calf that was purchased by a syndicate of Ontario Holstein and Ontario’s Holstein Canada Board Members for $2,600, and then donated back to the auction to eventually be bought by Ontowa Farms Inc. for $3,000. Other top selling items that evening included a handcrafted wooden rocking cow purchased by Webb View Farms for $1,050 and a Nascar prize package with tickets to the June 17th race and an opportunity to meet CAT driver Jeff Burton, which was purchased by Brad Lowry of Penlow Farms for $1,050. Proceeds from the fun auction go to support the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund. On day two, Board President Brian Slaughter welcomed the large group of attendees and reviewed the many successes Ontario Holstein members have enjoyed in the past year. He noted it had been another great show season, and although numbers were down at www.ontario.holstein.ca

some shows, the overall quality of the shows continues to improve. Brian congratulated the Master Breeder recipients and also acknowledged Tara Bullock for her role in initiating the Outstanding Dairy Woman of the Year award, which was presented to Heather Parkin last year. He concluded by thanking his family for supporting him as he took on a second year as President in 2011. Jason French also delivered a message in his capacity as General Manager. He pointed out the abundance of rich Holstein history in the province of Ontario and congratulated the various Holstein clubs set to celebrate milestones in 2012. Jason touched on the success of the Branch’s various youth programs and awards and expressed how much of a pleasure it was to work with such enthusiastic young people who are always eager to learn new things. He announced an upcoming meeting with The Honourable Ted McMeekin, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and spoke of the Branch’s ongoing goal of working as an advocate for the dairy industry. Jason expressed his excitement about the World Holstein Conference and noted how lucky we are to have it take place in Ontario this year. He encouraged everyone to take part when global events such as these come to the province. He also noted the upcoming 2013 Holstein Canada Convention, which will be held in Niagara Falls next April. Lastly, he thanked the Board of Directors as well as his staff at Ontario Holstein for their dedication and support. Jason closed by introducing a new website that will be launched by the Branch in the coming months. “Our vision is for people to check their email and then go to www.buyholsteins.com and see what animals are available,” he said. “This will give our members an opportunity to use the Internet as a selling tool and be able to network with buyers while setting their own prices.” More information on this initiative can be found on page 11. FINANCIALS & RESOLUTIONS Ron Greaves, who will serve as the 2012 Ontario Holstein Branch President, presented the Financial Statement and Budget prepared by BDO. In 2011, the Branch’s revenue over expenses totaled $51,566, as compared to $48,565 last year. Two resolutions were presented for discussion and voting by the the

members. Renfrew County submitted a resolution regarding the publishing of Breeder’s Cup results on the HAC website. It stated that breeders take great pride in the results of these shows and such shows appeal to a different group of breeders than traditional shows do and because of this, the results deserve to be published on their pedigrees on the Holstein Canada website. Put forth by Stormont and Waterloo Counties, the second resolution addressed the proofs of split embryo bulls and stated that although these bulls share the same DNA, their physical traits, health traits and initial daughter proofs can be slightly different. The resolution went on to state that it is up to the breeder paying for the semen to make the choice on which bull they prefer to use and that Holstein Canada, on behalf of its members, should request the Genetic Evaluation Board (GEB) of the Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) to provide individual proofs from split embryos so breeders can make sound decisions on which bull to use. Both resolutions were accepted by the members and will be put to vote at Holstein Canada’s AGM in Brandon, MB later this month. Paul MacLeod brought greetings from Holstein Canada and noted it had been an interesting year for sure. He said he has been able to see a lot of the country and meet a lot of members, whom he said are a passionate group of people who have shown they care. He said that although the amalgamation with CDN is now off the table, it was a worthwhile exercise as it provided an abundance of learning opportunities. Members not only gained more information on CDN, they learned more about their own organization and what makes it

unique. MacLeod said the world is becoming a smaller place all the time and we in North America have to do more things together, streamline processes and meet often to see what everyone is thinking. Part of the job as leaders, he said, is to move forward and look for opportunities for business to grow in the future. HONOUREES As this was the Branch’s 30th Annual General Meeting, tribute was paid to several individuals who have helped shape the industry over the years. Clarence Diefenbacher honoured Roy Snyder and Joe Snyder by sharing their accomplishments and contributions to the Holstein breed. “As this individual was fond of saying,” Clarence began, “there are people who make things happen, people who watch things happen and people who wonder, ‘what happened?’ Roy is in the first group.” In 1946, Roy, now 96, was the first full-time employee of the Waterloo Cattle Breeding Association. As its Manager from 1950 to 1963, he established the association as the first artificial insemination (AI) centre in the world to adopt an all-frozen semen program. At the time, many believed it couldn’t be done, but Roy proved them wrong and set a precedent for what is considered standard practice in the industry today. His younger brother, Joe Snyder, 83, was Assistant Manager of the Waterloo Cattle Breeder Association in the 1950s when frozen semen was first starting to be used. He used his influence as editor of www.ontario.holstein.ca

the unit’s “Better Bovine Bulletin” to praise the merits of AI and the use of frozen semen, as well as the benefits of herd classification and milk recording. From 1980 until 1993, Joe was the General Manager of the Ontario Holstein Branch and is credited with organizing the first dairy cattle evaluation clinic, as well as being a founding committee member of both the Ontario 4-H Inter-County Dairy Cattle Judging Competition and the first ever Contact Hays Classic (known today as the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic). AWARD PRESENTATIONS For the second year in a row, the Outstanding Dairy Women Service Award was presented. “Our winner this year has a resume filled with accomplishments and contributions which demonstrates her willingness to do the work which has made it evident to us that she is very deserving of this Outstanding Service award,” said award founder, Tara Bullock. “Her work ethic, whether related to their own family dairy farm or to her local Holstein Club, is strong and evident in all the various jobs she takes on as the club’s secretary.” In 2011, the Outstanding Dairy Women Service Award was awarded to Heather Parkin, who along with Tara Bullock, presented the award to this year’s winner, Elaine Standeaven. Elaine was presented with a framed rural print and a bouquet of flowers. noon portion of the meeting, which was kicked off by the recognition of the All Ontario winners. Awards were presented by sponsors Quality Seeds, Battlefield CAT and Foundation Sires. Production awards for Highest Fat and Protein in Ontario during 2011 were also handed out by Gay Lea delegate Larry Parkin. 2011 Ontario Dairy Youth Award Winners Collin Walker, Chancy Burgess, Brad Lowry and Wray Brubacher were next on the agenda and each spoke about their unforgettable trip to World Dairy Expo. Their slide presentations - which are always a highlight of the meeting - allowed the audience to get just a small glimpse into each of their respective farming operations and families, as well as the wonderful time these four gentlemen had in Madison with their chaperone, Eastern Ontario Field Rep, Kris MacLeod. Genetic Marketing Workshop

FROM MASTER BREEDERS TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND LOCAL BREEDERS, A ROOM FULL OF 100 VARIOUS HOLSTEIN ENTHUSIASTS ATTENDED THE 2012 GENETIC MARKETING WORKSHOP LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO BEST MARKET THEIR HERDS. At Lookout Holsteins in North Hatley, QC, Callum McKinven, his wife Kathy Beerwort and their three daughters work hard to create a comfortable, low-stress environment for their herd of show winners and genomic stars. When they first built their facility in the beautiful hills of Quebec, all details were put into place for sensible cow comfort. He matched stall size with the size of the animal in order to keep cows comfortable, as well as clean. Boxstalls are nice for cows, he says, but require a lot of work and for this reason, only his best cows are kept there. When building the barn, he brought in 8-year-old manure from a neighbour and packed it in the stalls to ensure a comfortable base for straw to lie on. He feeds dry hay and a protein ration and believes that this formula provides the best condition for his cows and helps them produce embryos. When he fed baleage, he said they noticed a marked drop in embryo production. Stray voltage can also cause lack

of production of embryos, so when building their barn, they built a system to take all stray voltage away from the barn. Milk replacer allows him to control Johne’s and Leukosis in the heifers and a cold outside environment helps keep them healthy. His words of advice? Treat all animals kindly and they will perform better for you. Though Don Johnston of Cherry Crest Holsteins in Martintown is dispersing his herd, he had a wealth of knowledge to share on sale consignments and marketing. Don and his wife, Nancy Beerwort, have been able to manage their herd the way they wanted to, and now with son Kevin taking over the operation, he can build his base herd on his philosophies. What worked well for Johnston was to buy into popular cow families as he says they have the consistency to breed on, plus they will give you instant marketability. Use the success of those cow families to propel your own marketing ability is his advice. When at a sale or reading sale highlights, he notes the importance of checking to see who is bidding or buying these animals as the breed’s major players know what they are doing. Try to buy a family member of what they are

buying. If you are a dairy farmer and you buy an individual from one of these families, don’t underestimate the value of their milk. $5,000-$6,000 a lactation can go a long way to help pay off the initial investment. “Getting out to events and meeting people is the best way to market your cattle,” Don says. He also warns breeders not to be afraid of the next guy making money as it will encourage them to come back and buy from you again in the future. Butz-Hill Exports owner Mark Butz from Iowa spoke on the Japanese market he deals with and discussed how they have traditionally purchased embryos from show cow families. He said the Japanese tend to like a solid sire stack with high type in their pedigrees, but notes that they have ordered some higher genomic cow families recently. To properly market your embryos, you need to promote the family or individual and that is best achieved by showing or advertising in breed magazines. The picture of that animal and other family members will give that potential buyer a way to relate to the family, especially if they have not been seen before. Currently he sees that the embryos he sells are coming from cows and heifers evenly. He has been fortunate to be included in some great partnerships, including one on Eastside Lewisdale Gold Missy. He stressed the importance of communicating with your partners, paying bills and having an exit plan if necessary. Unfortunate things can happen with cattle, but most partnerships shouldn’t last for a long time because it gets more complicated when additional generations are born, he says. With breeders starting to genomically test their bulls in 2013, the AI industry is prepared for a change in owner compensation. Brian Carscadden of Semex showed how they used to pay $5,500 for bulls, but now with genomics, they are able to make better selections. Semex’s investment of $50,000 to prove a bull is expensive, especially when you multiply that by 400 bulls a year. Genomics elminates a loss of investment from the outset by identifying bulls that should not be brought into stud. What genomics cannot do, however, is tell us which bull is going to be number one LPI after being progeny proven. Genomics identifies which bulls could be in the Top 100 LPI, but not the order. In the past, Semex has offered royalty programs to owners of the bulls which were capped at a certain dollar value, but now offers open-ended leases that can deliver many cheques to the owners. If a breeder owns a breedleading GLPI bull, Brian’s suggestion is to work with an AI company to market the bull’s semen, as that is what they are there to do. This lets the breeder do what they are best suited to do: breed or buy the best genetics available. The Genetic Marketing Workshop is supported by Ontario Holstein, EastGen, Holstein Canada and the Agricultural Management Institute (AMI) which is part of the Best Practices Suite of programs for Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. CHAIRPERSON AND FOUNDER OF THE AWARD, TARA BULLOCK, WAS PLEASED WITH THE NUMBER OF NOMINATIONS RECEIVED, WHICH SPEAKS TO JUST HOW INTEGRAL THESE WOMEN ARE TO THE SUCCESS OF THEIR RESPECTIVE COMMUNITIES. AS THE ROOM SAT IN EAGER ANTICIPATION, BULLOCK DELIVERED A MOVING TRIBUTE AND ANNOUNCED THIS YEAR’S WINNER: ELAINE STANDEAVEN. BULLOCK’S SPEECH CAN BE FOUND IN FULL BELOW. Once again, it was a difficult decision to make because there are so many amazing women in this province who have been nominated for this award.

It is through serving others in this business that we are able to grow, enrich and thrive in the dairy industry. This award is meant to thank and acknowledge those women who embody all of these attributes.

Registration and classification have for years been promoted by Holstein Canada and the Ontario Holstein Branch as valuable tools that can help improve the functional traits and production in your herd. Working with an AI company and their young sire program can provide some additional financial benefits that can assist in offsetting costs. This information is being presented to help our members understand the young sire programs available in Ontario and allow you to make the decision on what program works the best for your herd. The Ontario Holstein Branch is by no means recommending one AI organization over the other, but simply providing the information in an unbiased format for the use of our membership. ®

A LOT HAS HAPPENED IN ONE YEAR FOR SCOTT AND CHRISTA HUYCK AND FAMILY OF BATH, ONTARIO. IN 2010, WHEN SCOTT’S PARENTS STILL OWNED THE FARM, A LOCAL VET ASKED SCOTT ABOUT HOSTING A MEETING THERE FOR AREA PRODUCERS TO MEET AND DISCUSS JOHNES DISEASE. NEVER THINKING HIS COWS WERE THAT SPECIAL, SCOTT WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED TO HEAR A NUMBER OF SUCCESSFUL FARMERS TELL HIM, “YOU HAVE SOME OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS IN YOUR BARN.”

In January of 2011, Scott & Christa purchased the farm from Scott’s parents. With cows averaging over 200 days in milk and 25 kgs per cow, their first concern was filling quota. He approached a neighbour (reputed to have some of the county’s top cows) about purchasing a cow or two, who decided to lend Scott a few cows. Once these cows were in the barn, Scott challenged Christa to identify the two new higher quality individuals. Although she knows her cows, she had great difficulty finding the two new stars of the barn. This confirmed to both Scott and Christa that registration may be a good idea. An early change was to make the cows more comfortable by removing old stanchions and adding a more cowfriendly head rail with extended chains.

This allowed for over 20 animals to be registered as pure with the remaining majority being identified at the 50 and 75 per cent levels. Registrations were completed by late fall, some surplus bred and open heifers were sold and a few milking replacements were purchased. Days in milk has dropped to 154 and production levels have improved to 31.6 kgs per cow. On December 21, as part of the enrolment process, the Huycks classified for the first time scoring 18 cows and averaging 80.8 points. They received two Fairs, three Goods, nine Good Plus, six Very Goods and one Excellent (Hawley Huyck Flash pictured here), which made for a wonderful early Christmas present!

Additionally, Christa’s brother and the farm’s herdsman, Ken Babcock, was a strong motivator in improving the herd. “Without Ken, we wouldn’t be where we are; we are very fortunate to have him here.”

Although Flash (pictured with Scott and Ken), a 6-year-old daughter of a homebred unregistered sire was unregistered at the time of classification, she is now base breed. She has three promising 50 per cent pure daughters, one of which was regrettably sold as part of a heifer group in what Christa refers to as an “Oops who knew?” moment.

A ‘Cann- do’Attitude Wins Every Time!

SHOWING SINCE HE WAS JUST THREE YEARS OLD, 17-YEAR-OLD TRAVIS CANNING’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND CONSISTENCY IN THE SHOWMANSHIP RING HAS MADE HIM A COMPETITIVE MEMBER OF THE 4-H COMMUNITY.

Growing up in Wellington County, Travis along with parents, Ron and Shelley, and younger brother, Tyler, operates Canhope Holsteins. The Canning family milks 40 purebred cows on 100 acres of land east of Palmerston. Canhope Holsteins consists of 55 per cent two and three-year-olds, with 60 per cent of the herd tracing back to Marksmemory Bea. Bea, a VG-86 point Hanoverhill Starbuck daughter, was a Reserve All-Canadian and Reserve All-American Intermediate Calf in 1987. Today, Canhope Holsteins has a current herd classification of 6 Multiple Excellent, 3 Excellent, 23 Very Good and the remaining Good Plus. On the Farm, Travis is very involved with the day-to-day chores such as milking and feeding twice a day. He spends much of his time clipping and keeping the barn in pristine shape. During cropping season, Travis helps his father with much of the field work. Travis has two animals that he favours in the barn; Canhope Gibson Brennie and Mer-Gold Tal Scarlett. Brennie, an EX-91 from an Excellent Outside, is Travis’s favourite homebred cow and is backed by eight generations of VG or EX, one of them being Bea. Brennie is a 2nd generation Excellent homebred animal that he has liked since she was a calf. At 92 points, Scarlett is Travis’s favourite purchased animal and a daughter of the four time All-American Red and White, Derrwyn Miss Special. He purchased Scarlett while leading her at the Continental Class Sale in 2011 at Brubacher’s in Guelph. She currently has four sons in A.I. and a Larson heifer calf at Canhope.

Dufferin-Wellington County Show and made the conformation cut at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic that year with Travis finishing 9th in Showmanship. Snowmate is backed by five generations of VG cows and was added to the milk line at the beginning of February. This past year, Travis’s 4-H project was homebred September calf, Canhope Boltfran Charmaine. Charmaine is sired by a Bolton son and is out of a VG 88 Roy, a GP Leduc followed by seven generations of VG or EX cows.

Waterloo County’s Young Breeders Unite!

D

DID YOU KNOW THAT IF EVERY PERSON IN CHINA DRANK HALF A CUP OF MILK EVERY DAY, WE WOULD NEED TWICE AS MANY COWS IN THE WORLD? WOULD YOU HAVE EVER GUESSED THAT INDIA IS THE LARGEST PRODUCER OF MILK IN THE WORLD? WHAT ABOUT THE FACT THAT IN BRAZIL, IT HAS BECOME ALMOST EVERYDAY PRACTICE TO USE FROZEN, IVF SEXED EMBRYOS TO GUARANTEE THE BIRTH OF HEIFER CALVES – A COST THAT, TODAY IN CANADA, IS VALUED SOMEWHERE CLOSE TO $5,000 PER CALF! It turns out, most of the 45 young people who gathered at Ontowa Farm for Waterloo County’s Young Breeder’s Meeting didn’t know either. But they do now, and thanks to Semex’s Vice President of Global Marketing, Brad Sayles, they gained insight into these and other genomic practices becoming popular around the world. Sayles was invited to speak at the meeting by Greg Kuepfer, who,

“I can’t really say why we have so many more out,” he says. “It could be a lot of factors – the [Martin’s] new barn, the good weather, the fact that we’ve never had Brad as a speaker before. Genomics is a hot topic and it goes to show that people want to learn more.” Before Sayles began his talk, guests were invited to tour the Martin’s pristine free-stall facility located north of Elmira. The barn was built in the Fall of 2010 and houses 95 Good Plus or better Holsteins. In addition to touring the barn and admiring the Martin’s homebred herd, guests mingled and talked about developments on their own farms – promising sires, feed costs, breeding philosophies and the like. According to Kuepfer, the social aspect of the gatherings is a key part of the meetings. “Our biggest goal with these meetings is to get people to socialize,” Kuepfer says. “It’s nice to be able to get off the farm for an afternoon. It can sometimes get pretty lonely.” At 25-years-old, Kuepfer is working hard to make the Young Breeder’s Meetings the best they can be. He’d like to see the club meet a few times each year and discuss topics that will benefit each of them.

along with Mike Bechtel, Jordan Dietrich, Richard Osborne and Brian Jantzi, sits on Waterloo County Holstein Club’s Education Committee. Each year the committee organizes a guest speaker for the Young Breeders event, which is typically open to those under the age of 35. In the past, topics have included herd health and nutrition. This year’s topic focused on corrective mating, reading bull proofs and using genomics in your herd. Judging by the increase in numbers out, it was a good choice. Kuepfer, who has been a part of the committee for 5 years, says that usually 25-30 people is considered a decent turnout.

“We’re trying to come up with topics that as young people, we’re all interested in,” he says. Succession Planning, Farm Financials, Expanding Barns, and Selling Livestock were, for example, just a few of the topics listed on the questionnaire Kuepfer asked his fellow members to complete at the close of the meeting. Angela Howard, the field representative for Western Ontario, attends the meetings whenever she can. She applauded the group’s efforts and stressed how important it was for the younger generation to be educated and involved. “Not all counties are doing these meetings and you couldn’t have organized a better speaker,” she said. “I know I speak for many of you when I say I look forward to doing more of these in the future!”

Showmanship is Travis’s main focus when he attends 4-H shows. At the beginning of the season, Travis aims to have his heifer out daily and as the show season progresses, he continues to work with it a couples times a week. Guidance from friends, family and 4-H members have helped him to become such a successful competitor in the showmanship ring. This year during show season, Travis attended 14 4-H and Open Shows and to date, he has represented Wellington County at the

Youth Classic for four consecutive years. By the end of Travis’s 4-H career, his goal is to stand in the winner’s circle for showmanship at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic. Travis’s poise and determination to succeed will be instrumental in making his goal a reality. In the 4-H community, Travis sees James Walker as a mentor. He has always admired his work ethic and positive attitude. “James has always been supportive and encouraging,” Travis says. Travis would recommend becoming a 4-H

member to anyone interested. “4-H has many opportunities and it’s great way to meet new people and learn about the dairy business.” In the future, Travis plans to continue purchasing animals under the Canhope prefix and eventually take over the family farm. His aim is to continue breeding for type and production and perhaps one day achieve the ultimate honour of receiving Master Breeder shield. www.ontario.holstein.ca

On March 12, 2012, Ontario Holstein Branch President Ron Greaves and General Manager Jason French met with The Honourable Ted McMeekin, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs at his office in Guelph to discuss issues that affect our members. The interest in exporting more Holsteins was discussed, as other countries are trying to improve their dairy industries and would benefit from Canadian Holsteins in their herds. BSE has crippled Canada from any large export orders and there needs to be support given to open these markets again in the future. Traceability of animals needs to have all aspects on the industry following procedures to ensure a respected program. It will give more creditability to the province and it is on the list of items to be discussed during the current writing of the Growing Forward II Program. The management of stray voltage and ground current was also discussed. It has been a battling issue for many dairy farmers across the province and has decreased the level of production and efficiency in many operations. There is information on the OMAFRA website about the issue, but more attention should be given to the problem as it continues to negatively impact many dairy farms. As the meeting came to a close, Greaves and French stated that supply management has been able to keep our industry strong and that our sector has not communicated heartache, but simply a need for a strong marketplace. The Ontario Holstein Branch has a mandate to be a political advocate for the dairy industry and we will continue to communicate with the minister’s office regarding current issues in our Holstein business.

11. What are your thoughts on sexed semen? Do you use it? We don’t use it and won’t on the milking herd for conception reasons. Our heifer population, if not contracted for bulls, are needed as embryo recipients.

4. Describe the ultimate/ideal cow for your operation: The ideal cow for us would have a super balanced udder with superior legs. She would also possess a deep, open fore rib with lots of width on the chest floor.

12. How many cows do you flush each year? Do you sell most of them? Where do you sell them to? We probably flush six animals every three weeks and we do sell some embryos to Japan, UK and Europe. Most, however, we choose to put in our own herd.
