N

NEW YEAR, NEW ADVENTURES. Now that we have said goodbye to 2010 and hello to 2011, it is time to start thinking about what’s in store for the New Year! Maybe you have a cow standing in the barn just waiting to be the next big show winner. Maybe you will be one of Canada’s newest Master Breeders. Maybe you will invest in the next big-time heifer or cow. Maybe you will learn something new at a meeting or workshop and be able to implement it on your own operation. Maybe you will achieve a management goal for your herd. In our house, we are expecting a new little farm kid in the spring, so that will be our adventure this year! No matter what 2011 brings your way, I wish you all the best and look forward to working with you all again when I return in 2012! Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Kyle, Magazine & Youth Coordinator jkyle@ontario.holstein.ca

general mana ger’s messa ge

BEST OF LUCK IN 2011! We all can’t believe it when another year passes by and how we did so much during the year. We have turned the calendar to 2011 and it will lead to more exciting news and events in the Holstein industry. We will be experiencing more discussion on National Traceability as the provincial agriculture ministers gave a mandate in 2006 that there would be a program put in place by the end of 2011. Their intentions were “to prepare for and respond to emergencies including outbreaks of animal disease and food safety emergencies and to enhance industry’s competitiveness and ability to retain or capture market opportunities.” Your contribution to national traceability is having NLID tags in your cattle, registering them with Holstein Canada, tracking the movement of your cattle, Premise ID of your farm and most importantly supporting the entire system. I realize that we don’t all like change and why can’t we do things like we used to. May 2003 changed our industry when BSE was discovered. Mandates and regulations have changed and we must change with it. If you be positive about the situation then it will come back to be positive for you. Sincerely,

Jason French, General Manager branch@ontario.holstein.ca

BRANCH DIRECTOR, ELVIN PETHERICK along with his wife, Joy, owns and operates Lomond Holsteins on 100 acres just outside Campbellford near Petherick’s Corners. Currently Elvin and Joy raise open and bred heifers. Elvin grew up in a family of nine children; the first seven were boys! Everyone couldn’t farm, so Elvin headed off to university and a career as a teacher. Elvin taught Phys. Ed and was a Vice Principal with the Halton Board for 14 years before returning to Northumberland as a Principal with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board for 20 years before retiring four years ago. Being a teacher allowed for summers to help out on Carlencrest farm with haying and showing at Campbellford Fair and Peterborough Exhibition, as well as fairs such as Stirling, Warkworth, Roseneath and Norwood.

ONTARIO HOLSTEIN BRANCH DIRECTOR, HANK HAZELEGER, ALONG WITH HIS WIFE NANCY-LEE OWN AND OPERATE HANALEE HOLSTEINS IN OXFORD COUNTY.

Elvin has always owned several Holsteins since he was a teenager, and always showed and assisted the Carlencrest herd showing many class winners and achieving several Premier Breeder and Exhibitor Awards until the herd dispersed in 2000. As a teen, he also assisted Lloyd Wilson Auctions and worked the shows with Almerson, Rossdale, Raivue and Hallanary, as well as working with Doug Jarrell Auctions for many years.

Son Darren works as a mechanical design engineer but still helps out with chores when he can. Gary is home full-time and very actively involved in the day-to-day operation of the farm. Marty is in his second year at Kemptville College and is planning to return home full-time as well. Daughter Claire is in her final year of high school, but still works in the barn almost every day.

Aside from the day-to-day operation of the farm, Elvin is the current Secretary as well as Past President of the Northumberland Holstein Club. He has completed the show catalogue and arranged the sponsors and awards for the Northumberland Holstein Show for the past 20 years. He is a committee member for the Ontario Summer Show and the East-Central Junior Show. As an Official Judge with Holstein Canada, he has judged numerous shows and especially likes judging the 4-H shows. His most memorable judging experience happened in Ireland where he was driven to the show, arrived an hour late, but the participants were still arriving as well! Elvin decided to get involved with the Ontario Holstein Branch Board of Directors on the encouragement of Past Presidents Dennis Werry and Gerald Nyman during the planning of the Ontario Branch Annual Meeting planning in 2007. El felt he had the time and interest, as well as the experience with the Northumberland Holstein Club, 4-H, auctions and involvement with shows and fairs over the years to be put to use as a way to give back to the Holstein and dairy industry. Outside of the Holstein world, Elvin is the current President of the Campbellford Fair and a Past President of the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies. He is extremely proud of his family of three children who have all been very involved and successful in 4-H, sports activities and education leading to successful careers away from home. Elvin also really enjoys traveling and sports, and spent time as a coach and trainer for hockey teams for three children over the years!

Hank and Nancy-Lee and their children Darren, Gary, Marty and Claire run 325 acres with an additional 30 acres rented just south of Embro. The Hazelegers milk 75-80 cows in a tie-stall barn, however, due to the purchase of many recipient heifers to accommodate an extensive flush program, there are close to 300 head at Hanalee.

Hank decided to become involved with the Ontario Holstein Branch Board of Directors because of the interest his children were showing in the Holstein industry. He feels it is important to show them the value of becoming involved in different facets of the industry, as well as in the community. The contacts made with people locally, nationally and internationally are very rewarding and make the business a lot more fun and interesting. Outside of the Holstein world, Hank is involved with the local theatre group as well as the church choir. He and Nancy-Lee like to travel and have visited Germany, Holland, Denmark, Italy and Spain with Holstein sightings in each country. Hank says it is a challenging time in the dairy industry, but thinks it is important to stay positive and be thankful for all of the good things that come your way!

NEW NewBEGINNINGS Beginnings for FOR A BRIGHTER a Brighter Future FUTURE

WHILE BILL TROUP MAY BE RELATIVELY NEW TO FARMING ON CANADIAN SOIL, HIS PASSION AND SHARP EYE FOR DAIRY COWS TRAVELLED OVERSEAS WITH HIM AND HELPED ESTABLISH HIS TOP QUALITY HERD OF TODAY KNOWN AS VALE-O-SKENE HOLSTEINS. BILL, ALONG WITH HIS WIFE AND THREE CHILDREN EMIGRATED FROM SCOTLAND SIX YEARS AGO AND TOOK UP RESIDENCE ON A PRE-EXISTING BEEF FARM JUST OUTSIDE LINDSAY, ONTARIO.

In the beginning Bill says “it was a risky move at the time, but we have feeding calves before school in the mornings and helping with been fortunate enough that everything has worked itself out and we other chores on the farm,” Bill explains. He attended a two-year could not be happier with our outcome here in Canada.” agricultural diploma program in Scotland, similar to the program offered at Kemptville College or Ridgetown College here in Ontario. The home farm back in Scotland was first established in the late 1950’s when Bill’s grandfather and grandmother began milking a variety of Upon returning to the farm Bill went into partnership with his different dairy breeds. Although Bill’s father, Bill, originally planned brother, Gordon, and his dad with a stronger focus on incorporating to go through school to become a veterinarian like his older brother, purebred Holsteins into their herd. They farmed 850 acres in the he was called back to run the family farm when Bill’s grandfather UK split between a cash crop operation and the 100-head milking passed away. Upon returning to the farm Bill senior proudly carried herd. The land base was comprised of two owned farms and another on his father’s dairy operation where Bill, his brother and two sisters two rented properties. Due to increasing regulations and a limited were first introduced to the “dairy way of living”. land base, Bill knew the farm could no longer last at its current size and expansion was quite simply out of the question. So he went in Growing up in Scotland on his family’s large dairy operation, Bill search of other options that would allow him to continue his dream always knew that dairy farming was a lifestyle he loved and wanted of milking dairy cows. to pursue as his future career. “Like many farm kids, I got my start

Gary & Bill Troup And thus the decision to move to Canada presented itself as rather appealing to Bill and his wife, Wendy. Although some may think that Bill’s decision was rather drastic he explained that “we moved to Canada for a lot of different reasons. The farm in Scotland was in need of many costly repairs and with

so I had no reservations about starting up my own herd overseas,” says Bill. “Also at the time my son, Gary was 13 and already expressed a keen interest in showing and fitting cattle and we wanted to let him pursue his passion in the industry.”

“We like to try and be as self-sufficient as possible and maintain a good work and life balance as well.” - Bill Troup talks of a crumbling milk market in the UK; we wanted something that offered more stability.” Before moving, Bill was no stranger to Canadian dairy cows as he made regular visits to Canada beginning in the early 1990’s. Typically around the time of the Royal Winter Fair, he would meet up with Jim Phoenix and look for one or two Holsteins to buy and have shipped back to Scotland. “I always liked the cows over in Canada, www.ontario.holstein.ca

Arriving in Canada in 2004 with only one cow, Bill and his family got right to work on getting their farm prepared to ship milk. Within two years all renovations had been made and the first load of milk was trucked off the farm in February of 2006. Currently Bill and Wendy, along with help from their two daughters, Laura (24) and Gemma (22) and their son Gary (19), milk 31 cows in their tie stall barn and tend to a herd of 80 purebred Holsteins. While Laura was

married last year, she and her husband Ryan still help out on the farm when needed and house half a dozen or so Holsteins on the farm with their own prefix of Ryla Holsteins. Gemma currently attends the University of Ontario Institute of Technology but is able to find time to come home and help on the farm in between school and part time work at a local accounting firm. The youngest Gary also remains involved on the farm parttime when he is not running the show circuit fitting cows in the summer months. “Both Gary and Laura were involved in 4-H for a number of years and we are very proud of their accomplishments, both at the Royal and many county shows,” says Bill. Laura and Gary both brought home ribbons from the 2009 Royal Winter Fair in Toronto with Laura claiming fifth place Senior Showperson and Gary taking first place Junior Yearling and Grand Champion Calf with Vintage Dolman Milly.

In terms of his perspective on farming, Bill says that he likes to “keep thing simple and keep his cows producing high quality milk.” Currently his practices involve feeding wet wrapped hay, dry hay, cracked corn and distiller’s grains. Bill says that “we like to try and be as self-sufficient as possible and maintain a good work and life balance as well.” When asked why he chose to farm dairy cows Bill says that he grew up with the farming lifestyle and had a keen interest in showing top-notch cows. Cows were what he loved and there was never a doubt in his mind that farming was his destined career path. On the home farm in Scotland Bill says that “we had two or three full-time hired hands working for us right around the time we sold the farm and near the end I found myself doing a lot of the paper work and sitting behind a desk.” Since arriving in Canada, Bill has been able to manage his own cows and balance paper work in a much better manner. Before making his way onto the Ontario show circuit, Bill showed in the UK and achieved numerous awards including the prestigious Scottish Herd of the Year. Since then Bill has accumulated numerous ribbons and banners in Ontario including 2008 & 2009 Premier Exhibitor at Kawartha Lakes County show, Premier Breeder in Kawartha Lakes and numerous All-Ontario nominations including Gary’s Champion 4-H heifer at the Royal Winter Fair. When asked what he looks for in a good purebred Holstein Bill says that he likes to walk into the barn and see great looking cows with lots of stature and rib who are also able to produce lots of milk. He focuses on both high production and type in his breeding program and loves to see large framey two-year-olds in the row. He uses a variety of bulls on the farm in his breeding program including some of the Braedale Goldwyn sons, Cedarwal Spirte, Regancrest Dundee and Calbrett-I H H Champion to name a few. Bill says “I have never been one of those guys who hops on the latest trend in terms of bulls. You’ve got to know your cow families and look at the daughters and have an understanding of what is truly out there.” Over the years Bill says he has had the chance to work with a lot of great Holstein cows and hopes to continue to breed better and better pedigree lines in his barn. Bill says that some of his most prized Holsteins in the barn today include his original first cow on the farm, Ballcrest Heidi who gave him two daughters who went on the have pedigrees of Very Goods and Excellents, Kallanda Factor Heater who was bought in 2005 from the Phoenix’s, flushed and produced five heifer calves, Kigezi Gibson Juice currently EX 4E is doing very well in the herd and Tiny Acres Dundee Kathleen who was nominated All-Ontario in 2010 as a three-year-old at 88 points. “One of our greatest achievements on the farm has been last November when Gary did so well at the 4-H show with Vintage Dolman Milly. She had done well all summer long throughout the show season taking Junior Champion at the Lindsay show and doing very well at the Autumn Opportunity Show as well. She was a delight to have on the farm and we got a lot of interest in her from other CONTINUED ON PAGE 68

World Dairy Expo

WORLD DAIRY EXPO IN MADISON, WISCONSIN, IS A GREAT SHOW THAT NOT ONLY INCLUDES GREAT DAIRY BREED SHOWS BUT ALSO A DAIRY TRADE SHOW THAT INVOLVES HUNDREDS OF EXHIBITORS. ONTARIO HOLSTEIN SENDS OUR 4-H DAIRY JUDGING TEAM, ONTARIO DAIRY YOUTH AWARD WINNERS AND DAIRY SEN$E WINNERS TO WORLD DAIRY EXPO AS A TRIP OPPORTUNITY AS WELL AS A CHANCE TO CHEER ON THEIR FELLOW ONTARIO HOLSTEIN BREEDERS AS THEY EXHIBIT AT THIS SHOW.

Celebration was certainly needed during the Junior Champion parade of the Holstein Show as Craigcrest Rubies Gold Rejoice won the Winter Yearling class and was crowned Junior Champion of the show for owners Elgin & Joan Craig of Arthur. Right behind her taking Reserve Junior Champion honours was the winning Junior Yearling, Rockymountain Goldwyn Trisha owned by Terry Beckett of Sunderland. Both of these heifers were the clear favourites for winning the honours and made some great admirers from the ringside audience. During the 125,000 lb cow class, Starbrite Lyster Lyndsay continued to creep up the line from her first pull and ended up second behind the winner and eventual Reserve Grand Champion, StoneFront Iron Pasta. Owners, Starbrite Holsteins and Hodglynn Holsteins were certainly excited about the final placing for Lyndsay. In the Grand International Red & White Show, three Ontario bred heifers won their classes for their new American owners. Woodfield Royce

THE ALL-ONTARIO HOLSTEIN COMPETITION CONTINUES TO PROMOTE THE BEST HOLSTEINS FROM THE PROVINCE THAT HAVE ENTERED SHOW RINGS ACROSS ONTARIO IN 2010. The level of quality at our county shows continues to rise as well as the amount of new exhibitors that have the interest to show their animals. The show ring is still one of the best places to promote your herd and the cattle that you have bred or purchased. Instead of waiting to have people come to your barn to see your favourite cow, bring her to the show to show the people. We also take pride in the young people that have taken considerable time and effort to show their 4-H calves across the province each year. Their enthusiasm is contagious and we want to encourage them to be part of the Holstein industry in the future. Judging the competition this year were Lorne Briscoe, Brent Carmichael, Cameron MacGregor, Pete Coleman, John Buckley, Gerald Coughlin, Carl Phoenix and Norm McNaughton. Any judge with a personal interest in any of the entries was asked not to vote on the class in question. Congratulations to all of the winners and a special thank you to the exhibitors that have entered their animals as well as to our sponsors that support this competition. A special thank you also goes out to the judges that took the time to judge this competition.

A NEW EXCELLENT COW OR A VERY GOOD TWO-YEAR-OLD IS A BREEDING ACCOMPLISHMENT. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and are a point of pride for their breeders and owners. From October through to the end of December, there were 390 1st time Excellent cows and 767 Very Good two-year-olds classified in Ontario. These numbers are a true testament to the commitment our breeders have to breeding structurally sound cows that will stand the test of time. Eastern Ontario/Western Quebec Championship Show

2010

BY JASON FRENCH

THE TWO PROVINCES UNITED ONCE AGAIN TO HAVE A STRONG SHOW AT THE A.M. BARR ARENA ON THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH-KEMPTVILLE CAMPUS ON OCTOBER 15TH, 2010 Officiating the day was Callum McKinven from North Hatley, QC and he sorted through 195 head on the wet, damp day. The heifer classes started with a Summer Calf class with 10 entries and winning the class was Mary Inn Elle Sanchez for Mary Inn Holsteins and Jean Daniel Corbeil. The Cherry on Top of an Unforgettable Year!

BY CHRISTINA CROWLEY

EVERY 4-H MEMBER DREAMS OF LEADING A CLASS WINNER, A JUNIOR CHAMPION AND MAYBE EVEN A GRAND CHAMPION CALF AT THE CANADIAN 4-H CLASSIC JUNIOR DAIRY SHOW. WHILE ONLY SOME WILL ACHIEVE THIS FEAT IN THEIR CAREER, IT IS A GREAT GOAL TO WORK TOWARDS AND AN EVEN SWEETER VICTORY IF THEY ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISH IT!

The unbelievable year that South Simcoe 4-H’er Ashley O’Hara had this past show season only gets sweeter when you hear of how the story came to be in the first place. A truly remarkable story with humble beginnings; it all began in a sale ring with a baby calf and a keen eye for a good show animal.

This past spring, Trisha Ashley sees these new additions to her herd as Ashley and her older brother Devin, who is was purchased by Terry Beckett of Beckholm great projects over the winter before the show now a Holstein Canada Classifier, share the Holsteins in Sunderland with the agreement season starts again next spring. She appreciates same keen eye for a good-looking animal that Ashley could still take Trisha as her 4-H that these calves and the animals she purchases and this “eye” helped them purchase one of project for the year. all come from nice pedigree cow families and the most popular animals of this year’s show reliable herds. season- Rockymountain Goldwyn Trisha. Ashley and Trisha’s show season record In the summer of 2009, while attending together is impeccable! When asked whether While this year feels like somewhat of a the Rockymountain High Sale in Cochrane, Ashley was nervous leading Trisha at the shows blur after all the amazing memories and Alberta, Devin and Ashley set their sights knowing that she had a possible contender achievements both Ashley and Trisha have on a four month old Goldwyn calf who they for champion honours, Ashley said she was accomplished, Ashley does in fact remember admired secondarily for her looks, but primarily “pretty nervous knowing that there was a bit how she felt when she was leading her calf for her deep pedigree as a descendant of the of pressure as the year progressed and Trisha in the final Grand Champion calf parade famous Mapel Wood Lee Diamonds VG-87- did better at each show.” An important point while the judge of the Canadian 4-H Classic 2YR-CAN 16*. 2010 CANADIAN 4-H CL ASSIC JUNIOR DAIRY SHOW - 31 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG!

360 OF CANADA’S TOP DAIRY YOUTH FROM 51 TEAMS ACROSS 7 CANADIAN PROVINCES TOOK PART IN THE 31ST ANNUAL CANADIAN 4-H CLASSIC JUNIOR DAIRY SHOW AT THE ROYAL AGRICULTURAL WINTER FAIR ON NOVEMBER 6-8, 2010. 4-H MEMBERS AGE 12-21 DEMONSTRATED THE 4-H MOTTO OF “LEARN TO DO BY DOING” AS THEY WORKED TOGETHER TO PRODUCE TOP QUALITY DISPLAYS AND EXCEPTIONALLY WELL-GROOMED ANIMALS, AND INTERACT WITH THE PUBLIC. MANY NEW FRIENDSHIPS WERE MADE AND EXISTING ONES STRENGTHENED AS THE PARTICIPANTS COMPETED AS INDIVIDUALS AND AS TEAMS AT THE “OLYMPICS” OF 4-H DAIRY SHOWS.

Showmanship Judge, Bloyce Thompson of Charlottetown, PEI, along with his Associate Judge, Carl Phoenix of Greenbank, ON certainly had their work cut out for them as they sorted through three tremendously strong groups of showmanship. Champion Showperson was awarded to the 1st Place Senior Justin Crowley from Peterborough County with Reserve going to the 2nd Place Senior Kelsey Mode from Prescott County. Honourable Mention honours went to the 1st Place Intermediate Katelyn Crest of Alberta. Conformation judge Paul Trapp of Taylor, WI, USA, had a big job to do as the quality ran deep through all conformation classes. Judge Trapp awarded Grand Champion calf to the 1st Place Holstein Junior Yearling Heifer, Rockymountain Goldwyn Trisha, shown by Ashley O’Hara from South Simcoe. Reserve Grand Champion honours were awarded to the 1st Place Senior Calf Augure Reine Laramie, shown by Patricia Auger of Quebec East. Honourable Mention went to Andrew Lockie of York Region on his 1st Prize Summer Yearling Lockmar Sidney Dorothy. Meanwhile, back in the barn, the competition was full-steam ahead as the county and provincial teams competed for the best exhibit award. The team from Waterloo finished on top, followed very closely by Northumberland, Durham West, Lanark and Perth. A difference of a mere 1.6 points was all that separated 1st from 5th! Northumberland was named the winners of the Best Group of Three with Quebec East coming in a close second. Northumberland County was also awarded the prestigious “Bill Edelstein Bowl” for the Premier County, for accumulating the most overall points of showmanship, conformation and best exhibit. A new feature of this year’s show was the “Breeder of Distinction.”

Conformation Champions: Judge Paul Trapp, Olivia Groniger, John Gilliland, Kubota, Patricia Auger, Ashley O’Hara, Craig Bremner, TD, Jackie Burgess & Norm McNaughton, Semex

www.ontario.holstein.ca

Marc Comtois of Comestar Holsteins in Victoriaville, Quebec was named this year’s Breeder of Distinction and was on hand to meet & greet the participants during the show. Marc also generously donated two female embryos from the famous Laurie Sheik family for a draw. Allison Melenhorst of Carleton County was the lucky winner of this great genetic prize! The Classic is not just another 4-H show, but an elite opportunity for the nation’s dairy youth to showcase their talent and unite with other keen 4-H’ers at a world-class event. We thank sponsors TD Canada Trust, Kubota Canada, Semex Alliance and Holstein Canada who were on hand throughout the day. Without their commitment to the agricultural youth, shows such as the Classic simply would not happen. Various other guests were also on hand to bring greetings throughout the show.

Our Big Fat Trip to Madison

T

BY TARA BULLOCK

THIS PAST YEAR WE HAVE SEEN A FANTASTIC GROWING SEASON FOR CROPS WHICH HAVE RESULTED IN HIGHER YIELDS THAN MOST HAD EVER EXPECTED! IT ALL STARTED WITH AN EARLY SPRING HERE IN ONTARIO AND WHEN EACH OF THE DISTRICTS WERE CHOOSING THEIR WINNERS FOR THE ONTARIO DAIRY YOUTH AWARD, MANY AROUND THE TABLES WERE DISCUSSING HOW MUCH GRAIN WAS ALREADY IN THE GROUND AND WE HAD NOT EVEN CELEBRATED EASTER! Thankfully the year continued along very well with the right balance of rain and sun to get some very high quality hay in the barn for the coming winter months. I am sure like the other 3 men who went on this trip with me they were also glad to have an earlier harvest in order to leave everything at home in good shape considering we would all be gone from our respective operations for one week. Those of us chosen to represent our different districts were treated to a complimentary trip to the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. This trip is presented each year to four Ontario Holstein breeders who are between 25-35 years of age as of January 1st. The Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund and the Ontario Holstein Branch provide the resources to make this all possible.

been in this business. He too like Chris seems very comfortable to talk cow families all night. Dave was and still is a hog farmer who also happens to dairy farm. Obviously he is a very ambitious guy to be able to work in two different industries and to also climb the very steep learning curve required to be able to succeed in this business.

mammary system due to a severe case of mastitis. As long as she originally milked from that quarter prior to the illness, then the classifier doesn’t mark her down on that area. The farms we toured, the cattle we saw and the different management styles we were exposed to gave us all a chance to reflect and think about our own operations at home. How are we managing our own herds, what could we do differently, how can we continue to grow, excel and thrive in a business that never stays still? We were able to ask questions about how they feed, grow and develop their animals. What are their future plans, where do they see this industry in 5, 10, 20 years time? At each stop we made we were able to look at each of these areas with a very critical eye and hear from their point of view where they see this industry going. Each stop had very valuable ideas which sparked interesting, and thought provoking conversations both in the barn and in the car afterwards. All of this gave me a new sense of energy to go home and be thankful for our own operation, create new ideas for changes to improve and to hopefully add to the industry through our own business.

I, Tara Bullock was chosen to represent the East Central area. I was raised on a dairy farm, married a dairy farmer and now help to run our own operation. My main hope for this trip was to ask questions and listen as much as possible to be able to take home new ideas in all areas which will help our own business to grow and thrive. My father always said that “a change was as good as a break” and so this trip also provided a chance After many emails, itinerary preparations and last for rejuvenation and re-energizing the batteries minutes lists, hugs and kisses from kids/spouses for when I came home to go to work again. Just at home we were packed and on our way. As we prior to leaving my grandmother asked me how sped down the highway with Adrian VanderWeilen Randy (my husband) was going to manage 3 kids, at the wheel it soon became apparent that this was 50 cows to milk, other chores and kids’ activities going to be a very interesting trip! Our companion while I was gone. I simply replied “the same way I from the east was Chris Uhr of Knonaudale did last year when it was his turn to go to Madison Farms Inc from Chrysler, Ontario. Chris was our only I am leaving him a weeks worth of meals navigator which suited him well. Chris is a wealth in the freezer!” In other words don’t be afraid to of knowledge and made for some very interesting take a chance, let your name stand for your county conversations over dinner. His knowledge of competitions when asked and it might just result The graciousness and hospitality we were greeted cows, cow families and bull pedigrees was quite in a week that changes your whole perspective on with was indicative of the people still involved in astounding. this business! the dairy industry. They were busy too, but willing to have us in and show us around and make us feel The boys from the west were Tyler Brander of While on the trip we toured a wide variety of welcome. The social fabric of this business is built Branderlea Farms and Dave McKay of Davlin farms which ranged from 50 cow tie stalls to around the people who are leaders in their own Farms. These two were very different and yet 22,000 cow parlour operations. It was one of communities and who are pioneers of positive seemed to get along exceedingly well. Tyler is the most widely informative tours I have ever change within this business. These characteristics from a family of dairy farmers and has always experienced. There are many differences between transcend not only from their own farm to the how the Holstein industry functions in show ring, but it also illustrates their dedication the US versus our Canadian kind of to this breed, this business and to the future way. They value very functional dairy of the Holstein cow. We would certainly like to cattle which have to work. A few of thank once again the families and owners who the farms we toured actually preferred operate the following; Long Haven Holsteins, Tria shorter, more compact type of cow Koebel Holsteins and Jerseys, Milk Source, Ragnar which excelled in heel depth and correct Holsteins, Ever-Green Holsteins, Elm Lawn legs and a well balanced udder. There is Farms, Budjon Holsteins, Rosy Lane Holsteins a very big emphasis on the health traits and Widner’s Cheese Cellars. and this could be seen with the amount of “O Man” blood in many of the The International Show at the World Dairy Expo larger operations. Their classification was once again a fantastic show of all the great system was also not quite what we might cattle in North America. This was the icing on be used to here in Canada. Apparently the cake for all of us after a long week. When we it is possible for a cow to go down in headed for home again it was apparent to each of score from what she was previously us that the “ Canadian Kind” is still a very strong classified. We all found this to be odd and vibrant part of the Holstein industry and with considering that doesn’t happen north continuous work and due diligence will remain as of the border. Another difference in such for many years to come. 2010 Ontario Dairy Youth Award Winners at Budjon Fams: their system is that a cow will not be CONTINUED ON PAGE 68 (l to r) Dave McKay, Chris Uhr, Tyler Brander and Tara Bullock. held at fault if she is unbalanced in her

2010 President’s Cup Youth Showmanship Competition

O

BY JENNIFER KYLE

ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, THE PRESIDENT’S CUP HOLSTEIN YOUTH SHOWMANSHIP COMPETITION WAS ONCE AGAIN HELD FOLLOWING THE NATIONAL HOLSTEIN SHOW AT THE ROYAL WINTER FAIR.

Unlike the other major youth show at the Royal, The Canadian 4-H Classic Junior Dairy Show, that requires the participants to be a member of 4-H and show their current project animal, eligible youth do not necessarily have to be a member of 4-H to show in the President’s Cup. Nor do they have to show their own calf, as long as it was an animal shown in the open Holstein Show. This year 47 competitors aged 16 – 21 flexed their showmanship skills before judge Jeff West of Tottenham, Ontario for the 21st edition of the show.

At the end of the day, judge West selected Jenna Haelzle of Harriston as the 2010 winner of the President’s Cup. Following behind her in second place was Stephanie Warner of Peterborough and in third was Rachel Jebson of Sunderland.

This was the 57th Holstein youth showmanship competition held at the Royal. Herd sires out of Quality Holsteins have bred the herd for the past 25 years. This gave them a great base to begin the use of AI on their cows. With the help of their Gencor Promate report, they select proven sires that will improve feet and legs as well as mammary systems. Their heifer farm is located at Palmerston and they are currently running a grandson of Quality BC Frantisco. They have been able to reduce their age at first calving by two months as they now average 24.5 months of age. This is credited to proper information at breeding and a new calf barn that has accelerated the growth of the young stock. In 2007, they registered their herd through Holstein Canada’s enrolment program with assistance from Ontario Holstein staff. The ability to know more information about individual animals and make better breeding decisions to reduce inbreeding is the value they see in registration. They have also seen the benefit of selling young fresh cows that are now registered. Classification of the herd was another step that Ed and Bill decided would benefit the herd. They have learned a lot from the classifier’s visit as they now know there are more parts of the cow to concentrate on. They classify all two year olds and are now classifying more mature cows as well. They are off to a great start as Huberts Meadow Cartel 548 is their first VG-85 two year old! Classification offers them a benchmark tool to know how their herd ranks amongst Canada’s herds.

The Huberts have discovered that herd management and breed programs have been very beneficial, as they have seen great changes to their management with help from their DHI information. They both agree that you can never have enough information to make the proper decisions. Both Bill and Ed are pleased with the performance of the herd and plan to keep a consistent pattern of high volumes of milk from strong, functional cows.

farmers,” says Bill. Although Milly is no longer on the farm, Bill says days later, that their parents finally believed them that they had purchased an animal! that she is one heifer that he will never forget. Although Bill does not yet have a Master Breeder Shield, he is very determined at working towards this as one of his future goals. “I really look up to those guys who have bred cows for years and have achieved two or three master breeder awards; it’s something that I only dream about doing one day.”

When asked if she thinks she’ll leave the 4-H program on a high note after the year she had, she doesn’t see herself quitting with three years left in her 4-H career and an impressive 38 4-H projects completed to date. She credits the 4-H program for helping her meet a lot of amazing people and helping to curb her shyness. She would miss the people too much if she quit now she admits.

With his positive outlook on the Canadian dairy industry, Bill says that he is currently happy with the way his farm has turned out. “We don’t have any plans to expand the farm right now; it’s just the right amount of work for us,” says Bill. Future plans for the farm are for Gary to eventually take over the operation and continue in his father footsteps of breeding superior cows with excellent production.

Ashley is also no stranger to 4-H programs outside of the show ring. She is always eager to participate in new opportunities including attending the inaugural Dairy Sen$e Management conference held by Holstein Ontario and 4-H Ontario in May 2010 at the University of Guelph. She has also participated in the Ontario Inter-County 4-H Judging competition, 4-H youth Adventure camps and Discovery Days to name a few. She already has a new goal in sight that she has set for herself- to be one of four people selected to represent Ontario at the World Dairy Expo 4-H Over the last six years Bill says he has learned a lot about Canadian Judging competition in the next few years.

dairy and has enjoyed his experiences with other farmers. Being involved in the farming community is something that Bill says he enjoys and he believes is important for many farmers. Having moved to Ontario knowing only a handful of people from buying cows here and there he says his friend base has grown quite a bit. “Just from having Gary’s 4-H heifer do so well last year at the Royal, people come up to me, who I don’t even know and congratulate me on our success with her,” says Bill. Bill happily welcomes visitors to his farm to have a look at the cows that he has poured his blood, sweat and tears into and could not be happier for it. Above all Bill is a firm believer in the mentality that hard work and dedication have been the key factors to where his farm and cows are today. He could not be happier with the current management of his farm and thoroughly enjoys any time that he is able to spend at shows. Bill jokes that “I consider my holidays the time when we are off getting ready for and showing the cows, and to me that’s the best holiday I could ask for.”

Attention Fitters!

The Ontario Holstein Branch is compiling a list of fitters and their contact information. This list will be posted on our website as a reference for those breeders looking to hire a fitter for the shows. Please contact the branch at 519-653-6180 or branch@ontario.holstein.ca to be included in the listing.

When asked about her career endeavors in the future, the second-year Animal Science student at the University of Guelph was quick to say she would love to pursue a genetics career in the Holstein industry. On her family farm, both her and her brother are already heavily involved in helping to make the breeding decisions on a day-to-day basis and she credits her knowledge in nutrition which she has learned at Guelph, to the interest she takes in feeding and developing show animals. She may even follow in her brothers foot steps and pursue a career as a Holstein Canada classifier one day! Ashley and her brother have been fully supported by their parents in exploring career options outside of the farm before potentially returning to the farm one day to farm full-time. One thing that Ashley knows for sure? She wants to remain in the dairy industry. After a year like Ashley had, she is extremely humbled and modest about the whole experience. She appreciates that Terry Beckett allowed her the opportunity to continue to lead Trisha throughout the year and “finish what she started” after leading Trisha has a junior calf at previous shows in 2009. She definitely recognizes that this is by far the most memorable 4-H year she has ever had. She is quick to point out that this was only her second time making the cut with her calf at the Canadian 4-H Classic Junior Dairy show- and make the cut she did! Ashley also appreciates all the great people she met throughout the year and in the past through the show industry who “always gave encouraging words and were quick to lend a helping hand.” She said people were open in providing tips and advice to allow for both Ashley and Trisha to improve throughout the year and she really appreciated the encouraging words and support people shared. Ashley has truly embodied the 4-H motto of “learn to do by doing.” Ashley comments that it’s all about “trial and error- learning from your mistakes, moving forward, and never passing on an opportunity.” To end in fine fashion, when Ashley was asked what piece of advice she’d like to share with other 4-H members to help them achieve success like she did, she said “never give up on something you set out to achieve- keep working- take people’s advice and work really hard…it will pay off!” Well said Ashley. Congratulations on a tremendous 4-H year! CONTINUED FROM PAGE 62

most functionally correct animals. 1. Why did you choose Holsteins? We grew up with Holsteins, so it was what we knew. And, of 9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out that you wish course because the marketability of the Holsteins, it made sense you had been told? We received good advice starting out, but I guess it would be to stick to what we knew. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” You need to use what experience you have to make decisions and don’t be afraid to ask 2. What are your breeding goals? At Fradon we strive to breed cows that improve with each questions or for the opinions of more experienced breeders. The generation. We like to breed cows that other people would like most expensive animal at the sale isn’t always going to give you the best payback in the long run. to own. 3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program? We use a number of genetic tools, but mainly we use the AI proof sheets from the studs, as well as some genomic information on young sires or certain female families. Another tool in the arsenal is experience. You have to keep in mind what has or has not worked in the past.

10. What are your thoughts on sexed semen? Do you use it? We haven’t used any sexed semen yet. In the future we will likely use it though if it becomes available from the bulls that we wanted to use for a flush or a mating.

5. What bulls are you currently using? We are currently using bulls with high conformation traits. Braedale Goldwyn sons, Picston Shottle sons, as well as some others like Pine-Tree Sid, Gillette Windbrook and Fradon Redliner are in the tank right now.

12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait do you value most? We may be a more unique case, but on our farm the red and whites sell the best. There is a lot of demand for them right now. After that it would usually be an excellent cow from a well-known family with multiple generations of excellent dams.

11. How many cows do you flush each year? Do you sell most of them? Where do you sell them to? We do about 30 flushes per year. About 15 cows and we usually 4. Describe the ultimate/ideal cow for your operation: The ideal cow for us would be a cow that scores EX after three do them 2-3 times each. We sell approximately 75% of these calvings; a cow that will be in demand for her embryos or offspring; embryos. Most are sold to European countries, Australia and a cow that will live and produce for five or more lactations. South America.

6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation? We are proud that between by brother (and farm partner), Don and I, we each have a son that wants to continue farming. A point of pride is also breeding animals that have been in demand around the world such as the Maude’s and the Jodie’s. 7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be? Recently we have switched to a TMR for feeding the herd. It has been a big change, but has been working well. There are times when we could adapt to new technologies a little quicker than we do.

13. Which bull do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years? Pretty much every one of our cow families goes back to HanoverHill Triple Threat-Red. Other bulls that have really left a positive mark on the herd are Maughlin Storm, Comestar Stormatic and Ladino Park Talent.

14. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation? Why? Sticking to a plan. For example, we want to breed cows that improve with each generation. We are all on the same page with this plan, so any breeding decision is made with this goal in mind. 8. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why? As well, we have found that adapting to new technologies has That is a tough question, but I guess it would be a Royal Champion helped to improve the overall operation. like the 2010 winners Goldwyn Lotto, Talent Licorice or Redman Seisme.
