Class of 2019: We left our marks One day, it will be your last first day, your last pep assembly, Friday night football game, your last high school lunch, your last time parking in the Senior lot, and the last laugh in the classroom with your favorite teacher. It is important to take note of these lasts because they will never be revisited again. Not in the same moment, feeling or state of mind. Our great year commenced with what it consists of every year; the first day of school. We all got greeting emails from our GBC dual-enrollment

professors if we were going that route or we were getting several sheets of paper to take home for our parents to sign. Everyone was going in through the glass hallway doors to see the blue and gold “Welcome Back, Lowry!” letters painted on the windows or parking in the Senior parking lot for the very first time and feeling like you’ve earned it. That was 283 days ago. The new backpacks, pencils, binders, clothes, and shoes will never have the same effect as they did these last 12 years of our lives. To some, going

to sleep early to go to school the next day will be something to be missed but to others, having no more of that every day will be the best thing they’ve ever heard. Whatever the feelings may be, the last four years happened and I hope we can all say that they were some of the most carefree and fun times we will have. The Homecoming theme this year was Spooky Week and the dress up days included a Dia de los SEE 2019 on PAGE 3

to keep in mind that there is nobody that can live your life better than yourself. There will be times after graduating high school, where it all seems like too much. With that hope and Josie Warn competing in Academic Challenge./ Ron Espinola perseverance, you • The Brand can make amazing things happen. Today, we will be putting on our blue or gold gowns, putting on our graduation regalia, taking pictures with some of our classmates for the last time and walking up to greet our teachers and administrators for what may be the last time as well. Let us take what we have learned and put it to use to have the best times of our lives. It was great knowing you all.

Ready to meet your new teachers? Although the end of the year signifies a goodbye to many of our favorite teachers, it also represents an opportunity to welcome new faces. With the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, 6 new staff members will join our community at Lowry. Many of you already know Jessica Mayo, who has just

recently started her job in the counseling office. Chelsea Odoms from WJHS will be teaching English. Jeanette Montero will be coming on board as a social worker for HCSD. The Special Education department will gain two new additions: Laurel Weaver, and Army Veteran Larry Renteria. A new Automotive Technologies teacher will also be joining us. The new staff is more than prepared to do whatever they can for their students. “I will be here to work with you,” said Renteria. “I want to be one of your greatest assets... I want to be there to assist, inspire, listen, and make a difference in the lives of others however they see Larry Renteria coaching the freshman girls basketball team./Ron fit.... I will work as

hard as needed so that you can achieve your dreams and goals, so long as you are willing to work with me. My door is always open for any student who wants to learn and better themselves for a brighter tomorrow.” As always, our teachers expect just as much their students as their students expect of them. “I want my students to have fun while learning,” said Odoms. “Their behavior definitely determines the dynamic in the classroom...I also want them to know that they are valued and their opinions matter, but that they need to express them respectfully. I try my hardest to make sure that they get the most out of their educational journey, and I expect them to do the same.” Mayo plans to be as supportive of the students as she can. “I plan on contributing to Lowry in any way that I can,” said Mayo. “I enjoy sports, school, and getting to know people. I want to be someone that stu-

dents can come to for help with any problem...I am most excited to continue working with students to help them excel in their classes and figure out next steps after high school.” Each new teacher has their own motivation for pursuing the career path they did. “I had a very influential high school teacher, Mrs. Tirabassi, who showed me exactly how amazing English is,” said Odoms. “She made me want to become a high school teacher so that I can spread my love for English and maybe help some young adults before they exit high school.” Many regarded our school with a glowing review. “I’ve taught in many different types of special education classrooms,” said Webber. “I took this job at Lowry High School because of the excellent reputation of your staff, from administration all the way to your Education support team.”

Military. “Well, I'm currently stationed over at Fort Campbell Kentucky/Tennessee. I'm with the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) division. I'm an 11B or Infantryman. Currently been doing a lot of training and learning on how my job works and doing better at it. Any more questions feel free to email me back! Not sure what else you like to know,” said Donnie Swanson via email. Hailey Hinkle went on to go to college at BYU. “I am attending BYU, I am studying elementary education. I just finished my first year with a 3.7 GPA. I am home for the summer and will be working at Global Coffee and at Barrick as a summer student,” said Hailey Hinkle via text. Shelby Garrison went on to UNR to run track. “I’m going to school at UNR and majoring in biology to become a physician's assistant. Goodbye to Brand seniors :( This year, The Brand is saying goodbye to Ale Ibarra and Taylor Gleason; who I’m sure both used Espy’s Keurig about 200 times. Over the course of the year, both had their ups and downs, but their time in The Brand will never be forgotten. Ibarra has been a member of The Brand for three years, including one as the managing editor. This was Gleason’s first year in The Brand, but both girls wish they would’ve taken The Brand their entire high school career. Ibarra is also a member of the Congress of Future Medical Leaders Alumni, President of National Honor Society in Winnemucca and on the swim team. Gleason has been a part of the Queen Association and was Rodeo Queen her sophomore and junior year while being a member of the Rodeo Club and FFA.

The 2019 athletes who are moving on up Each year, hundreds of athletes compete in sports. A fortunate few get to go on and continue to the next level. The class of 2019 is no different. Although Tatyana Carlson had several options, she will be attending Lewis-Clark State in Idaho for golf. “There were a few colleges on the east that talked to me and offered a good scholarship but they were too far away for me. I wanted to go to Lewis-Clark State because I felt like I kind of clicked with the team,” said Carlson. “I did my college visit and

This college gave me a good offer to pay for most of my schooling so I basically have to pay for my meal plan and one or two classes and they pay for the rest.” Will Kracaw is going to be going to the College of Idaho for cross country. He explained why he chose this school.”It was closer to home than a lot of other schools that offer scholarships and then they also gave me a good scholarship along with academic scholarships that I had earned at the school the scholarship was $5000 a year” said Kracaw.

Hansen knows that this school will help her become the person she wants to be. “The classroom sizes are smaller, and it’s just a good environment for me to be around,” said Hansen. “ I really liked how the college is smaller and all the people were really nice.”

Coach of the Year: Grant Beatty Grant Beatty seems to be a quiet, laidback person but in reality, is extremely competitive. According to Beatty, who has coached freshman and JV basketball and varsity track, he coaches for the competition and to see the growth in his athletes. “I really love sports I love competing as an athlete I love being in sports as an adult really fun to help kids find success and see them have fun doing it and

Athlete of the year: Sydney Connors There are many athletes that are introduced to sports at a very early age in life that causes them to stay focused on one, or all of them, into their later years. Each year, a senior athlete is chosen. Someone who has exemplified all of the necessary qualities that make them a worthy choice. This year, it is Sydney Connors. Connors has played sports like soccer, basketball, and softball “ever since she could walk”. “I just enjoyed each of those sports and that is what made me want to continue,” said Connors. Sydney’s varsity basketball coach and longtime family friend, Mrs. Chelsea Cabatbat, has known her long enough to know what kind of athlete she has become. “I have known Sydney for a very long time. I can remember her as a little girl always running around playing every sport. I can remember watching her toss a football around and thinking to myself ‘wow she got a great arm’,” said Cabatbat. According to Cabatbat, Connors has a “very high sports IQ and is very talented in every sport she does”. “She has excelled in basketball and softball over the last four years. Oh and we can’t forget about all those great passes she has thrown in the powder puff games throughout the last four years,” said Cabatbat. “I have witnessed Sydney make amazing passes to her team-

mates because she sees the floor so well. She understands game situations and she can create opportunities for herself and her teammates in critical situations.” Cabatbat has good memories from her times coaching this Athlete of the Year. “I will never forget all the times when we were inbounding the ball under our basket and the defense had their back turned,” said Cabatbat. “She would bounce that ball right off the back of the defender step inbounds and hit a big shot. It would make the other coaches so upset. She is just a very smart athlete.” Connors has good memories of her times at the high school and admits that her motivation came from her closest family member. “I think going to state for basketball and softball [was the best memory] actually,” said Connors. “I will miss playing with my friends because we created so many good memories that will last forever. I know that they will always be there for me when I’m gone and I’ll always be there for them. [I will also never forget that] my brother [Calvin] because he pushed me to be better every time I played that sport.” Connors’ parents have been there to guide her

throughout every bump in the road and encourage her to embrace the silver linings. “They have supported me throughout my career and have always been there for me,” said Connors. “They have always told me to think about the next play. If I strike out or miss a shot, forget about it and worry about what is going to happen next.” Cabatbat has seen Sydney flourish into a well-rounded athlete and could not be more proud of her. “Sydney has been so fun to watch over the last few years. I will never forget all the three-point shots she made and how excited the crowd would get and all the home runs she has sent sailing over the fence. Sydney always made the big plays in whatever sports she played,” said Cabatbat. Connors will miss her time here at high school and will continue her endeavors at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Athlete of the year: Brendan Domire Every sports year has its ups and downs. This year, we’ve seen it all, from the greatest of victories to the harshest of losses. Like every year before, one athlete has risen to the top. This year, the honor of The Brand 2019 Athlete of the year goes to Brendan Domire. Domire not only secured a spot on the Varsity team in all three of his sports, but excelled in doing so. “We don’t have many three-sport athletes that produce the way he has produced,” said Varsity Football coach, Taua Cabatbat.“As athletes are concerned, he did a really good job contributing to Lowry High School’s athletic program.” It is easy to shy away from athletic involvement because of the difficulty involved. Despite the challenges

and fatigue that come with a tri-sport schedule, Domire wouldn’t have had it any other way. “I’ve always played sports,” said Domire. “I love sports, so any time off, it just feels like I’m not doing what I should be doing. And I just have a love for all three games-football, basketball and baseball. I enjoy playing all three of them and I like competing at all times so it wasn’t really hard for me to say ‘Hey, I want to play this sport.’ I couldn’t go without playing a sport.” It was that love and enthusiasm that made Domire’s athletic talent. “He plays with passion,” said Cabatbat. “When he is determined, whether its football, basketball or baseball, he gives his all and he’s willing to do whatever...He was the first one willing to step up and put himself out there, granted he’s never played the

position before, or we’ve never seen him at practice before, we believe that he had enough passion in him that he was going to excel. If he said he wanted to do it, we gave him free reign. That’s what separates him from a lot of athletes.” Domire really had it all when it comes to his athletic career. The enthusiasm, the prowess, even the respect. “His senior year he really bloomed into a leader; not only on the football field, but what I’ve seen basketball and baseball wise,” said Cabatbat. “A lot of people look up to the effort that he’s put in and understand that he is that guy that they trust to follow...I think he has a really good sense of humor. He’s true to his friends, and I think that those qualities, those traits of a leader, it really shines.” After graduation, Domire hopes to continue his athletic career, but his top priority is pursuing his dream of becoming a Physical Therapist. “I can stay close to sports. I have sports in my heart; I always want to stay around it in some way.”

After a fulfilling athletic career, the only thing Domire regrets is his utilization o f time. “I wish I’d taken a little bit more time to put more of the little details in, instead of rushing through and trying to get to the bigger picture,” said Domire. “I kind of said, ‘I’ll do it next week...I’ll do it tomorrow.’ I wish I’d have taken the time to slow down and just enjoy and try to work on the smaller things. I know everyone says it, but it definitely goes by quick. I mean, I remember freshman year like it was yesterday, and now I’m a senior graduating in a couple of days. Enjoy the little things, and make as many friends as you can and make the best out of it.”

What’s changed throughout the seniors' lives

If you really think about when the seniors were little, a has changed. No, I’m not talking about how we changed ourselves, but what we grew up playing with in comparison to what we play with now. When we were little, we used to play with Barbie dolls, Legos, Webkinz, stuffed animals, Razor scooters, face paint and so much more. A very popular movie back in the 2000s was “X-Men”. In 2001, Bratz were very popular for the little girls out there. Bop It was very popular in 2009. Just about every family had the game and was playing it. Back in 2016, Facebook was the most popular social media out there, but now we’re starting to turn to Instagram. Around 2010, MTV /Courtesy • was a very popular wikimedia channel for early teens, but now that we have grown up, a lot of us have stopped watching

shows from MTV. In 2015, the phrases “THE BOMB” and “EPIC” were something all of us have used at least once, if not more. What happened to those sayings? As children, cable TV was very popular. After school and in the morning we would sit down in front of the television as we got ready, or even when we were eating, but now a lot of families don’t even own cable TV, but instead, we use Netflix, Hulu, Showbox, etc. Snapchat was a very popular social media for taking pictures in 2011. Every picture you saw that was a selfie was taken with a Snapchat filter. If you think about it, back in the 2000s, we used to use the flip phone. There were no touch screen phones out there. But now everyone, even seven-year-olds, has smartphones in their pockets. A lot that has changed since we were kids, but just wait; there will be more changing yet.

Artist of the Year: Myia Ray Life-long artist Myia Ray was chosen for Artist of the Year. Ray has been creatively expanding her artistry for about 13 years now, and has been involved with Lowry’s Art Department since freshman year. Although, her expressive nature somehow lead her to the track team, where she does throwing

events such as shot put and discus. Even though Ray seems to be a natural born artist, she didn’t become very serious about it until her junior year. “In class, I felt more inspired and intrigued,” said Ray. “Toward my senior year, I took it more seriously and decided that I want a career in art.” Ray stated she is most comfortable painting with acrylics, but Ray's piece, "Night Drive", obtained a Gold Key at art teacher Ms. Julia Topholm this year's scholastic competition./Courtesy • Julia believes Ray is skilled with all Topholm mediums. “Myia is a very self-driven artist who over the years has used her natural artistic ability to acquire new skills and techniques,” stated Topholm. “Her ability has helped her to embrace new styles, mediums and techniques she has

learned in our art classes to develop her own very distinct style. Her combination of both natural ability and the willingness to learn and grow as an artist has put use new skills she has acquired over the years.” Topholm also believes Ray’s work is of exquisite beauty and she always placed implicit meaning into her pieces. “Working with Myia as a student the last four years I have had the opportunity see her grow so much and her willingness to push herself, seek guidance and create pieces that truly make people stop and take notice is so awe-inspiring,” said Topholm. Topholm admires Ray’s growth and commitment to the Art Department, and has high hopes for Ray’s future. “Myia is a very humble and dedi-

cated young artist,” stated Topholm. “As her teacher, I cannot put into words how proud I am of her and her work. As a fellow artist, it has been a privilege to be part of her artistic journey this far and I know as she goes out into the world, her work will continue to develop beyond all expectations.”

Performer of the Year: Evan Jeppsen Evan Jeppsen was chosen by director Corrine James as Performer of the Year. During his high school career, Evan has been a member of football, basketball, swim and for two years now, a member of Drama. Director James stated that Jeppsen is someone she can always count on

and he has even mastered the music booth. “He is always smiling and always helpful,” said James. “Evan is absolutely amazing.” James also mentioned that Jeppsen contributes to the group in such a positive way and his skills as an actor are exceptional. “His acting is excellent and his timing is perfect,” said James. “He is subtle and funny. I will never forget his role as Stuart in the Christmas program and ‘Awkward Birthday Party’.” In addition to Drama, Jeppsen is a member of the swim team. This year in specific, Coach Shelby Ruff stated that Jeppsen has greatly improved. “Evan has really focused on

increasing his level of conditioning,” said Ruff. “He has worked harder and more consistently at practice than last year and it shows in his times. He has become a valuable member of the relay teams and will be missed next year.” Jeppsen is also notorious for his gummy bear print speedo and being the designated DJ on roadtrips. Jeppsen stated that his favorite aspect of the class is the family-like feel to it. Drama taught him to “learn to love everyone, no matter what their situation is.” Jeppsen believes he will carry these ‘dramatic’ memories with him for a long time, one of the most important to him being the play, “A Fiddler on the Roof” at the beginning of his senior year. “We got to all learn about the Jewish culture and how they were affected in Russia in the 1900’s,” said Jeppsen. “Everyone became great friends after, and I learned to appreciate musicals in a whole new way.”
