These were opposite the war memorial, at the John O’Gaunt Inn corner and more broadly, in the area closer to the canal bridge. He said possible loss of parking space was a major concern to traders. He had 90 extra signatures for the 36-signature petition to be presented to Newbury District Council on March 5. Cr Roger Thompson said he understood many people were driving into Hungerfrod from Eddington in preference to walking because of the danger of crossing the road.

ungerford Town Council is continuing to debate formation of a tourism and development committee. The last council meeting was told it was important that the Hungerford Town and Manor and Hungerford Chamber of Commerce be involved along with other interested organisations. The mayor, Cr Martin Crane said a concept strategy was needed for a special group to move tourism forward. The group would need to be ﬁnanced and a possible basis for that would be for the council, town and manor and chamber of commerce to initially each contribute £5000. The concept was expected to be discussed at an Action For Market Towns meeting at The Three Swans Hotel last night. Newbury District Council is reported to be holding a £10,000 Mary Portas grant to Hungerford Chamber of Commerce.

have met many self-made rich men but none had made their fortunes more dramatically than a young, unassuming wartime sailor with whom I have remained in mutually affectionate touch for more than half a century. Born in Streatham, and with no sea-faring background, Donald Gosling joined the Navy in 1944, aged 15, as an Able Seaman and fell in love with it and, particularly with his warship, the cruiser, Leander. He was heartbroken when forced to leave because of the peace-time reductions. With a £200 gratuity he walked the London streets wondering what to do and conceived the idea of using a cleared bombed-site as a car-park. He consulted the relevant London council official, Ronald Hobson, with whose guidance he set up his first parking facility. Hobson, who also had a £200 gratuity for his wartime Army service, joined him in the venture which became National Car Parks, the biggest operation of its kind in Britain or Europe. By 1997 it was valued at £750 millions and employed many thousands! Ever grateful to the Navy, Don, as I have always known him, devoted much energy and support to the White Ensign Association, which finds jobs for retired Naval and Marine personnel, becoming its President, and to several other Naval charities. In 1976, he was knighted for ‘services to HM Forces’ and created KCVO in 2004. This year, his charitable foundation gave £25 millions towards the upkeep of Nelson’s flagship, Victory. Until this year, Don rated as his greatest honours his promotion to Honorary Captain of the Royal Naval Reserve in 1993, for his charitable efforts for the Navy, then to Rear Admiral, then Vice Admiral which required him to carry out ceremonial functions in full uniform. This year, at a private lunch in his honour at Windsor Castle, the Queen created him Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom, directly subordinate to the Lord High Admiral of the United Kingdom, who is the Duke of Edinburgh. How’s that for a former Able Bodied Seaman?

Don attributes his success to the impact of his beloved Navy on his character. He says that it taught him the values of work, discipline and teamwork. It also taught him to trust others, as one needs to do on a fighting ship. He and Hobson never had a written agreement in their car-park partnership, trusting each other totally from the outset. They still keep an office in London, where they have a commercial investment property company, but Don spends much of his time afloat on his magnificent yacht, inevitably called Leander. He also continues to shoot pheasants, which was how we first met, and, for many years, he rented the Mountbatten shoot, at Broadlands, in Hampshire, where I was a regular gun – usually along with several Admirals! After age required me to retire from shooting, my wife and I still attended the usually hilarious shoot lunches there. (On one occasion, Don, who loves to laugh, entered the room seemingly in a cage carried by an enormous gorilla. He had seen the clever trick at a London party and hired it.) Now 83, he was shooting recently at Highclere, where I had a spy among the beaters who delivered a note from me and duly reported back that Sir Donald was dispatching the high, fast pheasants as cleanly as ever. Don responded to my note with an updating reply asking my wife and I to join him for lunch and reunion on his next Highclere day. Sadly, that proved to be physically impossible for us. Still, we can now be especially proud to be such old friends of the Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom .

He said there were areas within the town that could contain housing and moves were under way to appoint a professional consultant. He said overall involvement in a local development plan would be too costly for the council.

HUNGERFORD COACH PARK DISCUSSION Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee’s has discussed a coach park in Charnham Street. The park would be at the current bus stop opposite The Sun Inn and would involve several extra parking spaces, the mayor, Cr Martin Crane said. The meeting also heard of a proposal for a coach park at Cobbs Farm and feeling was that if Cobbs wished to develop a coach park, they could consider it. STATION PRECINCTS PROGRESS DELAYED Two over-riding factors appear to be delaying progress of Hungerford’s railway station precincts development. These factors were again aired at a recent meeting of Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee. Firstly, the council needs a decision from Network Rail on the station boundaries and “ransom strip” alleged to be hindering progress. Secondly the council needs assurance that the rail service will be maintained when tenders for the service are sought next March. The meeting was told there was no guarantee that rail traffic would continue to expand if the service was reduced to a “shuttle service” from Newbury when electrification of the line between Paddington and Newbury was implemented. A special council committee was to meet on Wednesday to discuss the rail service. Delegates from Hungerford, Kintbury and Bedwyn were mentioned but there was no mention of Marlborough from where there is understood to be concern from people who use Bedwyn and Hungerford railway stations in preference to Swindon.
