Right Tyres. Right Choice.

Happy on the run By ROB MILDON Intimate knowledge of every inch of the Manfeild racetrack is not restricted to racing drivers. Last weekend, Feilding long-distance runner Perry Newburn completed a 500km run around the circuit in just 72 hours. The Guardian caught up with the 58-year-old on Friday, just shy of halfway through the run. Since 7.30am on Thursday, he’d covered 230km. ‘‘The worst thing in the last 28 hours has been the wind,’’ he said of the Manawatu westerly, the only part of our weather that can be counted on. ‘‘It hasn’t stopped since we started.’’ Neither has he, almost. The last time Mr Newburn set the three-day masters record for distance running, he went without sleep for the whole three days. This time the weather’s made it a little tougher. ‘‘Sometimes I have to sit down and close my eyes for 20 minutes.’’ When he says he’s done ‘‘a bit’’ of training, he’s not talking about a casual jog around the block once a day. Mr Newburn averages about 200km each week. He ran his first marathon at age 49. ‘‘I enjoyed it so much that I kept running, kept upping the distance.’’ Recently he clocked up two laps of Lake Taupo in just 46 hours. His ultimate goal is to crack the masters record for running across the United States. It stands at 52 days; he wants to do it in 50, an average of 95km per day. If he can do that, Mr Newburn might consider it his swansong. ‘‘Then I could drop back and just do the odd hundred-miler,’’ he says laconically. Until then he’s focused on the job in hand, putting one foot in front of the other, fixed on that 500km finish line. ‘‘Then I might have a cold drink and fall asleep,’’ he laughs. ■ Mr Newburn completed his run early on Sunday morning, calling it quits after adding an extra four kilometres to his goal and with 45 minutes to spare.

‘‘I was pretty shattered at that point,’’ he said. ‘‘I found myself sleep walking and stepping over things that weren’t there.’’ No matter how many milestones he passes, how many big runs he completes, crossing the finish line never gets old.

‘‘It’s quite emotional. You put so much into it; it’s draining but you hold it together. Then you let it go.’’ ■ To sponsor Perry Newburn on his run across the US, visit www.perrysrun.blogspot.com.

Watch those button batteries! They are coin-sized batteries used to power calculators, hearing aids, watches, singing Christmas cards, bathroom scales, keys, and lots of other gadgets and devices we enjoy using every day. But they can be deadly if swallowed, so keep them away from children and be aware that the elderly can mistake them for pills. They are often sold cheaply in plastic packs that contain a large number of batteries, which leave plenty of spares in the opened pack if you only need one. Why can they be dangerous? When a button battery comes into contact with fluids, it creates an electrical current. This even happens with flat or ‘‘dead’’ batteries. The current burns body tissue and can quickly and seriously damage internal organs in as little as two hours’ time. Using button batteries safely ■ Don’t ever allow children to play with them. ■ Store them like you would for medication or matches: out of reach of children. This means either in a cabinet or in a childproofed locked area. ■ Keep spare or used batteries

away from tablets or pills that elderly people may be taking. For example, make sure they change hearing aid batteries in an area completely separate from where they keep their medication. ■ Change them on a surface out of children’s reach. Immediately place the ‘‘dead’’ battery out of their reach. ■ Make sure a device’s battery cover is secure so a child can’t remove it; use duct tape if necessary. ■ Seek medical attention immediately if you think someone has swallowed a button battery or a child may have placed one in their nose or ear. Do not let the person eat or drink anything and do not induce vomiting. For more information about button batteries and general product safety, visit the product safety section of the Consumer Affairs website at www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz. ■ For free and confidential advice and information on this or any other matter, visit the Palmerston North Citizens Advice Bureau in Community House, 77 King Street, Palmerston North. Recently, attempting to get into town, I waited in the wind and rain at a neighbourhood bus stop. Looking at the schedule listing terminus bus departures, I’d had difficulty determining which route they’d take, and when (or if) they might reach this. Fortunately I gained a bus driver’s attention, approaching on the other side of the road. She yelled to me I’d have a fiftyminute wait for a bus if I stayed at that stop — and then was kind enough to wait while I dodged traffic crossing the road to reach her vehicle. Horizons is responsible for providing bus services, and I’m hoping (perhaps vainly?) the new representatives we’ve elected will initiate serious reviews of transportation in the city. They need to challenge the provision of ‘‘reverse’’ routes,

the lack of dedicated schedules at bus stops, and the provision of freeze-your-bottom benches for those waiting for the buses which may not come. Also, a commitment to expanding services — especially evening and weekend programmes — is needed, so that those of us without other means of access to city functions may share city life. This may involve increased costs, but will provide greater economic returns in the long run (while reducing the need for many of the city’s costly car-dependent initiatives). Meantime, let’s demand a minimum commitment to the placement of dedicated bus-stop schedules, and the recognition of bus drivers concerned enough to stop and assist potential, confused passengers. Rugby idols wow students By ALECIA ROUSSEAU and ROB MILDON Students at Feilding Intermediate were given the opportunity of a lifetime last Friday when they received a visit from rugby idols Kevin Mealamu and Charlie Faumuina. The two All Blacks travelled to Manawatu as part of the ‘‘All Blacks to the Nation’’ tour, which sees members of the team visiting seven towns in just one day. Room 9 pupil Ashlee Scott won the radio competition that brought the national heroes to her classroom. When news of their win came, the class’ excitement transcended words, reported Holly Williams. ‘‘We were speechless, especially our teacher. Everyone was just jumping up and down.’’ Her schoolmates could only watch through the windows as Faumuina and Mealamu spoke to the class and signed autographs. Room 9 also had the privilege of taking the field with the two sportsmen for a game of ‘capture the ball’. Team Faumuina cleaned up, beating Team Mealamu 3-1. ‘‘It was a neat learning curve and a great opportunity to play casually with the All Blacks,’’ said Ariana Taylor as she came off the field. Our culture may put them on a pedestal, but Ariana and her friends all said Mealamu and Faumuina were just a couple of normal blokes. ‘‘They put their undies on the same way as us.’’ Mealamu grew up in Tokoroa, and said he understood how small towns often felt left out. ‘‘I was never able to meet any of the All Blacks growing up so getting into these smaller towns means our fans get to see us as real people.’’ Room 9 teacher Kat Wills says the win couldn’t have gone to a more deserving class. ‘‘These kids are rugby mad; one of my students wrote that one of his life goals was to meet an All

On a mission

Nurse to help Ukraine orphans By ALECIA ROUSSEAU

A Palmerston North nurse is ready to hand in her scrubs for a five-week stint helping some of Europe’s most desperate children. Keshia Melton, 25, is heading to Ukraine in August next year, volunteering for the Ukrainian Humanitarian Initiative (UHI). Dedicated to providing immediate need for suffering orphans, UHI funds professional programmes aiding in health, education and abuse prevention. ‘‘Most of these children have been abandoned because they are not ‘socially acceptable’,’’ explains Ms Melton. ‘‘They stay in ‘baby houses’ until they are five years old and are then moved to adult institutions like asylums, but a lot of these children die.’’ There are approximately 100,000 orphans dispersed between the country’s 450 orphanages. These are full, forcing a further 100,000 children on to the streets. ‘‘The orphanages receive little government help and are largely understaffed and under-resourced,’’ says Ms Melton. ‘‘In one room there will be 20 kids lying there dead silent; they don’t bother crying because they know no-one will come.’’ Statistics show Ukraine’s standard of living has decreased by about 80 per cent over the past 20 years, with those under the age of 18 suffering the most. Children that leave an orphanage are likely to take up prostitution or crime, with only 27 per cent able to find work.

In one room there will be 20 kids lying there dead silent; they don’t bother crying because they know no-one will come.

‘‘Many of these children have living parents who are addicted to alcohol and drugs. ‘‘If a child is not adopted before the age of five, life gets very hard. Sadly, boys are often left until last and make up a large proportion of these deserted children.’’ Authorities ignore the issue and encourage parents to disown handicapped children, she added. ‘‘Orphanages have their own graveyards; one I saw had hundreds of graves. The authorities don’t care and the doctors are often unable to offer the right diagnosis.’’ ■ Ms Melton is seeking $1000 in donations to buy toys, nappies, and clothing for the children she meets. If you are willing to help, please visit www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/ makeachildsmile. If you would like to contact Ms Melton directly, please email her on keshia.melton@gmail.com GDN311013ukraine

DRAMATIC: A two-hour long pursuit of this Subaru, originally stolen from Taupo, came to a halt outside The Plaza. PICTURE: ALECIA ROUSSEAU

Car chase leads to CBD search By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Two men have been arrested after an intense two-hour car chase ended in Palmerston North’s CBD last Thursday. Dyllan Vaughan, 17, and Simon Woodward, 27, were allegedly driving a stolen Subaru that police say was used in Wanganui for a petrol drive-off at around 11am on Thursday. Police were notified and took pursuit of the vehicle as it left the city. The vehicle failed to stop and headed through Feilding and Halcombe. Along the

way police deployed road spikes but these were unsuccessful. Officers could not continue their pursuit for public safety reasons so the Helipro helicopter was deployed to follow the vehicle from the air. The car was driven to Palmerston North where it collided with a car outside Pak’nSave on Ferguson Street. The vehicle came to a permanent halt at the rear entrance of The Plaza, a n d t h e t w o a l l e g ed offenders continued on foot. Woodward was immedi-

ately caught by police, but Vaughan evaded arrest. Police spent almost two hours searching through The Plaza, which was cordoned off temporarily. Vaughan was eventually arrested in Feilding on Friday afternoon and appeared in the Palmerston North District Court on Saturday. He is charged with failing to stop for police, unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, and two counts of t h e f t . V a u g ha n w a s remanded in custody to reappear on November 14.

Give your money to charity not beggars, says council By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Palmerston North beggars could be looking at a tight Christmas this year as city officials boost the Give Wisely campaign. Residents are being asked to give their money to charities that provide support for the beggars rather than h a n d i ng mo n e y o v e r directly. The Palmerston North Safety Advisory Board is pushing the initiative in a bid to mitigate the effects of begging on pedestrians and r e t a i l er s along Broadway Avenue. This idea has been adopted in Wellington, and was labelled as a more ‘ ‘ l i b e ra l ’ ’ a n d ‘ ‘ c o m p a s s i on a t e ’ ’ option compared to a bylaw that would ‘‘treat beggars like dogs’’. The campaign will run from December to February next year, relying on posters, flyers, radio and TV advertising to spread the message. said proposed bylaws had not worked in other areas and a more collaborative approach was needed to reduce the amount beggars were earning on the street. ‘‘On average, there are around 10 beggars and t h o s e n u m b er s h a v e remained fairly stable for a number of years,’’she explained. ‘‘We’ve spoken to each of them and worked closely alongside social agencies and police.’’ The b e g g a rs ha d already been assessed regarding their different needs, she added. ‘‘As far as we are aware they are all receiving their entitlements and all have had either offers for accommodation or they h a v e a c c o mm o d a ti o n already.’’ August saw an increase

in ‘‘aggressive’’ begging, according to local police who upped patrols in the area as a result. The campaign, which also ran last December, was recognised for significantly reducing the amount of income the beggars received, but it also forced them into other parts of the CBD to make up for this loss. ‘‘We know that a lot of students and people on low incomes tend to give as they empathise with the sense of need,’’ said Senior Sergeant Brett Calkin. ‘‘However this isn’t New York or Johannesburg—this is New Zealand, which has a welfare safety net, and all of our beggars in Palmy receive benefits and have accommodation options.’’

Touring food gardens By VANESSA WITT, co-ordinator, Transition Feilding ‘‘The greatest change we need to make is from consumption to production, even if on a small scale, in our own gardens. If only 10 per cent of us do this, there is enough for everyone,’’ said Bill Mollison, co-founder of the permaculture design system. Based on the ideas of caring for the Earth, caring for people, and sharing resources fairly, permaculture has inspired a global movement known as ‘‘Transition’’, where communities come together to work on small-scale local projects to become more resilient in facing the challenges of climate change, economic hardship and shrinking supplies of cheap energy. Transition Feilding is a group of people who want to build a stronger sense of community, care for the environment, and develop new skills and connections that can help create a more sustainable, resilient and enjoyable way of life in and around the town of Feilding. As a new group, its first projects are focused on food. Members regularly attend the ATC Community Market in Feilding, held on the first Saturday of every month, to share homemade gardening products and ideas with those who are interested in growing more food at home. They are in the process of planning and developing a sharing garden within Feilding. This will be a place for sharing skills and ideas about

Coombrae Villas provide freedom and security Feilding retiree Barbara Wishnowsky couldn’t imagine anywhere she would rather live than Enliven’s Coombrae Retirement Village. Mrs Wishnowsky moved to Coombrae Retirement Village almost five years ago with her husband Trevor, who died last year. When the time came for the couple to downsize and move into a more manageable and accessible home, Coombrae Retirement Village ticked all of the boxes, she says. ‘‘It’s a small village that is really close to town and has a great community feel to it, while still being surrounded by beautiful countryside,’’ she says. ‘‘My villa is just the right size for me and I have a garage for my car. My family loves coming to visit me here — especially my great grandson who is fascinated by the animals in the paddock just over the fence.’’ Coombrae villas have been designed for people who want their own home, but would like to know help is at hand when they need it.

‘‘I’m really happy here,’’ says Mrs Wishnowsky. ‘‘I have the freedom of living my own life in my own home, and the security of knowing that support is right next door at Coombrae Home if I need it. We even have a village supervisor who comes round each morning to check that all is well. ‘‘I’m sure the time will come when I need more support, but it doesn’t worry me too much as I know all of the staff at Coombrae Home and won’t have to move far.’’ Villa residents also have the opportunity to join in with the regular outings, activities and entertainment taking place in Coombrae Home. ‘‘I’ve got my own car so don’t go on too many of the trips, but I’ve used Coombrae Home’s Recreation Room for a number of special family occasions including my 80th birthday party,’’ Mrs Wishnowsky says. She is encouraging others to take a tour of the villas at the next open day on Friday, November 1, 10am-11.30am. Come and see for yourself!

Public to help Making it happen shape reserve

7

VOLUNTEER CORNER

By LOUISA GAIMSTER and LIZ CHANDLER Rosyln residents are being encouraged to help shape the future of Vogel Street Reserve, quite literally, by choosing how this area should be landscaped. Two options are being put forward by town planners, based on key elements of design in public spaces, both intended to make the reserve more accessible and safe for the public. The designs are on show at Roslyn Library and other community centres in the area, and feature paths, shaded areas, seating, and planting for easy maintenance, while still retaining open spaces for play. Vogel Street Reserve is named after Sir Julius Vogel, premier in the 1870s, known for his ambitious and visionary public works policy. You have until mid-November to send your feedback to brian.way@pncc.govt.nz or leave it at Roslyn Library. Members of REACH (Roslyn Education & Community Health) will also be canvassing Roslyn residents for their opinion. Work on the reserve will start after Christmas, with the path first. It will be a staged process, depending on design and funding. This community-led approach to planning public areas has been successful elsewhere in Palmerston North, bringing life to previously under-used spaces.

If you are available to help with this, or any other community events and groups, contact Norelle Ward at the Volunteer Resource Centre on (06) 354-6027 or email info@vrcmanawatu.org.nz ■ Join in REACH Roslyn’s celebration of the new community garden at Norton Park — next to the Life Church on Featherston Street — from 10am on Saturday, November 9. It’s being officially opened by Palmerston North mayor, Jono Naylor, and MP, Iain Lees-Galloway. The garden originated from the ‘‘Have a Say Day’’ last November. It’s in the shape of a koru, with plots available for members of the Roslyn community to use. It will let residents garden who don’t have one where they live, be a source of cheap fruit and vegetables to share, and provide a focus for sharing gardening tips with others. At the launch there’ll be a range of free food, stalls from groups such as Plant to Plate, MidCentral Health, Plunket and the Palmerston North City Library, and a sandpit for the children to play in, with buckets and spades that they can take home at the end of the day. To learn more about the garden or REACH Roslyn, visit the Roslyn Library in Kipling Street or phone them on (06) 357-9287, or visit REACH Roslyn’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/reach.roslyn.

Universally, people recognise the contribution of volunteers — in sport, health, emergency services, faith communities and the environmental lobby. In fact, volunteers are involved in just about every aspect of service delivery in all walks of life. However, volunteering does not succeed in a vacuum, which is why we celebrate International Volunteer Managers’ Day every year on November 5. It is important to thank these professionals and let them know they enhance and enable the spirit of volunteerism. This year the Volunteer Resource Centre Manawatu & Districts (VRC) is planning to celebrate International Volunteer Managers’ Day in association with International Pacific College from 5.30pm7pm on November 5. All volunteer managers or co-ordinators are welcome to attend this free event, regardless of membership with the VRC. RSVPs are essential for catering purposes. VRC and IPC are planning a fun and varied evening where everyone can let their hair down, have a laugh and meet a variety of people in similar roles to their own. Those of us involved in the management of volunteers maybe more aware than most that a such a role can be somewhat isolating, as there is often only one person in an organisation undertaking this type of role, and the challenges (and the rewards) can often be very different from those faced by other managers. This is another reason why we come together to celebrate and support each other. They can also be quite similar, so sharing our successes and failures is a fabulous way to learn and extend our skills in this unique role. ■ Register for International Volunteer Managers’ Day by calling (06) 354-6027 or emailing info@vrcmanawatu.org.nz.

VOLUNTEER ROLES AVAILABLE If you are interested in any of these roles, please contact the Volunteer Resource Centre for a registration form on (06) 354 6027 or e-mail info@vrcmanawatu.org.nz. HEALTH FOR

Effective, natural pain relief! Most of us experience musculoskeletal pain at some stage of our lives. This is pain that affects muscle, tendons, ligaments, bones and joints, and can be anything from just irritating to completely disabling. This may be caused by a recent injury, a long term problem, or possibly some other cause. Whether it’s in your back, neck or joints, having this pain can make everyday life — and sleep — difficult. If you suffer from this type of pain, you’re definitely not alone. Musculoskeletal pain, most

commonly back pain, accounts for a large percentage of all missed workdays, but just because something is common doesn’t mean you have to live with it. Pain is a signal that the body has reached its limit or has developed a problem, and just like traffic signals, this signal should be obeyed. Discover a natural solution to back pain relief. With a visit to Don, you will find him to be caring and professional, with a background in osteopathy and many years of experience in treating musculoskeletal problems. Using techniques of manipulation and mobilisation, the treatment can help relieve the aches and pains of inflamed joints, nerves and tissues, to provide fast, natural relief. Mobilisation involves movement and ‘‘freeing-up’’ of the joints, and manipulation uses gentle pres-

sure to realign or put things back in place. Soft tissue treatment prior to manipulation relaxes the muscles and helps make treatment much more comfortable; most clients will find relief after one or two visits. The majority of clients seen by Don come with sore backs, necks and headaches, but many other ailments such as arthritis, sciatica, loss of balance, pins and needles and dizziness can also be treated with these techniques. Every client is given a comprehensive health consultation, including tests relevant to the condition, which help disclose any possible underlying problems. Regular treatments are a great way to keep troublesome joints mobile and free from pain. Located at 254 Albert St (opposite the Hokowhitu playing fields), Parrs Clinic is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, with some Saturday appointments available. Manawatu Guardian

Palmerston North’s new groove There’s a funky new addition to Little Cuba in Palmerston North: vintage and retro clothing store Groovylicious. The shop has only been open for two weeks, but is already making waves for its eclectic collection of clothing and creativity from the 1920s to the 1980s. Owner Shaun Kay is Palmerston North born and bred, but fell in love with the

vibe of Cuba Mall in Wellington’s inner city, and wanted to bring it to Manawatu. He sources clothes from garage sales and other off-the-beaten-track places, making trips out of town to pick up pieces that fit the shop’s ‘groovy’ nature. ‘‘I’ve always wanted to do this; I just love clothes,’’ says Shaun. ‘‘Palmerston North’s got the flair,

especially around the George Street area. I want to tap into that.’’ A colourful wall of graffiti art by Ryan Etuale of Passionart adds to the atmosphere, and on the opposite side of the shop is a community art wall, where local artists can display their creations free of charge. Shaun has been working with UCOL and Creative Journeys of Square Edge for this venture. The Groovylicious launch night is on November 1 at 6pm, and will include a fashion parade. The ‘‘Chalk it Groovy’’ public event will be taking place during the day, and everyone is invited to add some chalk art to the pavement outside, which will turn into a runway later on. It’ll be a day of fashion and funk, not to be missed.

Wear that masterpiece The wonderful World of Wearable Art is coming to Te Manawa. For the first time in well over a decade, a selection of the best garments from the World of Wearable Art Up Close are represented in an exhibition. Off the Wall is a tribute to the joy and energy of the World of Wearable Art (WOW), where the designers see the body as a blank canvas on which they can develop any idea that appeals to them. The two-year roadshow takes 30 garments around New Zealand, showcasing the calibre of talent that can be seen in the annual event. The exhibition even includes a lit AV room for four glow-in-the-dark pieces.

It’s no easy feat getting the show around the country. The exhibition takes two days to set up, which is overseen by WOW wardrobe and awards manager Jude Spencer, who travels with the show. In Off the Wall you’ll see anything from 20,664 plastic collar stays to 12 leather suitcases, from recycled wool sacks to wood, corrugated iron to kitchen utensils or taxidermied birds. The exhibition opens on Saturday, November 2 and runs until February 23. Admission is $12 adults, $10 students and $6 children.

Celebrating a collection of iconic WearableArtTM garments & their unique stories in a compelling showcase of creativity.

If any nation knows how to party, it’s the Irish. Join awardwinning fiddler Marian Burns and Friends in an Irish extravaganza of frenzied playing, with the occasional slow ballad thrown in to let us all catch our breath! This Irish variety show comes with a health warning: “fast-paced Irish music may bring on uncontrollable bouts of fun and joy”. ‘‘If you’re Irish, come into the parlour...’’ goes the everpopular song, and as everyone loves Irish music we invite you all to pop in. Grab something green and skip along to this Irish themed toe tapping wonderful new show from the award-winning Daytime Concert Series, with favourite Irish tunes including Phil the Fluter’s Ball, That’s an Irish Lullaby, McNamara’s Band and I’ll take thee home again, to name a few. Led by the ever-popular Marian Burns with Operatunity director John Cameron and guest artists Alex Milligan, Ben McDonald and Imogen Thirlwall, accompanied by the Irish band.

The Daytime Concert Series, presented by Operatunity, runs over 200 concerts per year in 24 venues throughout New Zealand and has become the largest employer of professional singers and artists of its type since its humble beginnings 11 years ago. Each concert is a quality experience, presented professionally with a unique character of lighthearted fun and laughter.

HOOTENANNY: Alex Milligan, Marian Burns, Ben McDonald and John Cameron will sing the best o’ the Irish next week. Burns and her trusty violin have been fiddling their way across the world at 100 miles an hour, from the top of the Eiffel Tower to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, with the Blarney Castle and the Grand Ole Opry in between. She’s been taking the world by storm with her exuberance and passion for music. This dynamic New Zealand artist is racking up awards

faster than her version of the Orange Blossom Special (and that’s damn fast!), taking home New Zealand’s prestigious ‘‘Benny Award’’ at the 2012 Variety Artists Awards, Australia’s ‘‘Best Fiddler as a Soloist’’ at the 2013 Golden Fiddle Awards, and presented with the ‘‘Lifetime Achievement Award’’ upon celebrating 40 years of playing the violin.

■ If you’re Irish, come into the parlour . . . plays at 11am on Wednesday, November 6, at New Life Church, 590 Featherston Street. Tickets are $30 including lunch with the artists (discounts available for groups and regular bookings). Phone 0508 266-237 (toll free) or email bookings@operatunity.co.nz. The Guardian has two prize packs to give away, which include double passes, a book and a CD. Stocks and song a winning combination By ROB MILDON Long-time theatregoers might think they’ve seen it all, but Centrepoint Theatre is prepared to bet you’ve never seen a musical about stock cars. Now you’ll get to add even that to your experience, as Stockcars: The Musical opens on Saturday night. Mark Clare plays Cam, a former stockcar driver whose best mate stabbed him in the back on the track. Now running the local tyre shop, he’s battling to save the racetrack from the designs of big business. Not having been a big stockcars man, Clare went to the first race meet of the season to absorb the atmosphere. ‘‘It seems like everybody in the family is involved in it. It’s a hugely social kind of thing. They’ve really got passion but it’s also really stoic,’’ he said. All this has to be somehow expressed on stage. ‘‘The main thing is showing how important the speedway is.’’ You can’t live in Palmerston

North and not notice the speedway. Stockcars: The Musical, written by old Palmy hands John Lepper and Simon Ferry, is as much a love letter to the city as it is a drama. It’s part of John Pheloung’s job, as one of the two Balladeers, to set that scene, and it’s involved a fair bit of research into local culture. ‘‘There are jokes about Highbury and Bunnythorpe,’’ he says. It’s been really important to get the feel of it right: the digs are made with love. ‘‘They’re jokes told about Palmerston by Palmerston people, rather than by Auckland people.’’ The show explores classic Kiwi themes of conflict between old mates in small towns, but it wouldn’t be stockcars if there wasn’t a family aspect to it as well. Cam gets to live his old life vicariously through his racing daughter Maz. ‘‘He just thinks this is the greatest thing and he’s giving his daughter a real chance at money and success,’’ says Clare. But she

might be realising that there’s more to life than fast cars and engine grease. ‘‘It’s a bit of conflict for her.’’ The songs are tailored to match the stockcars culture; if you like the music they play at the speedway, you’ll love these, reckons Pheloung. ‘‘This is about as close to a rock-band musical as you can get. We just use acoustic guitars — it’s pretty stripped down. It’s much more our style of music that way. Simple songs, direct, in the vein of Bruce Springsteen.’’ The Balladeers sing to move the plot forward and perhaps poke a little fun at the characters — and the audience. But for Cam, his friends and his rivals, singing is a way to express something they can’t otherwise. ‘‘It’s for when you’ve reached a point where dialogue won’t do it anymore,’’ says Clare. ■ Stockcars: The Musical opens this Saturday at 8pm and runs until December 14. For times and booking information, call Centrepoint Theatre on (06) 354-5740.

WHAT’S THE HAPS?

Breaking bad? No, breaking good! What’s better than things exploding into pretty lights and cars being demolished in a perilfilled yet hilarious and OSHapproved manner? Very little. Maybe some sort of dinosaur/ laser combination — and we’re fresh out of lasers, so the Fireworks Spectacular and Ramp Derby on November 2 is the event to catch! There’s high-velocity Speedway action from the drop of the green flag at 7pm, and the Demolition Derby cars will later sail gaily off the top of the ramp on their way

to total destruction. The huge Fireworks Spectacular wraps the whole thing up. ■ Palmerston North Leisure Centre hosts the 2013 Iris Show on November 2nd and 3rd. If you would like to show a bloom from your garden contact Carole Flyger (06 357-3424) or come to the Leisure Centre between 8am and 10am where members will assist in staging the blooms. Doors open at 1pm on Saturday. ■ Feilding Brass performing their annual concert for the community with a surprise guest artist. 7.30pm at Feilding Civic

Centre, Saturday 2nd. ■ Saturday 2nd is opening night of the funniest musical about stockcars you will ever see! Once arch-rivals on the track, Cameron Todd and Malcolm DuFresne now face off in the realm of local politics. Will Cam save his business and the beloved Speedway, or will the killjoys get the last laugh? This is Kiwi theatre, so you never know for sure! Centrepoint Theatre at 8pm to 14th December. ■ For the first time in well over a decade, a selection of the very best garments from the World of

Wearable Art are on show at Te Manawa. Off the Wall is a tribute to the joy and energy of World of Wearable Art where the designers see the body as a blank canvas on which they can develop any idea that appeals to them. Exhibition opens on Sunday 3rd at 10am. Exhibition is on until next year. ■ The Fitzherbert Lions Club Tour de Manawatu provides an ideal fun family event as distances cater for both young and old and provide a personal challenge. Starting in The Square on Sunday 3rd, choose from 116km, 80km, 45km or 20km courses. Proceeds from the Charity Cycle Challenge are put to good use in the community

and this year will support the Palmerston North Surf Life Saving Club Inc. Why not join in? First ride starts at 8am. ■ Opening of the sixth annual Local History Week is at the Palmerston North City Library, November 4th, at 11am. All welcome. Programmes available at the Library. For all enquiries and event bookings contact Research & Archives, Palmerston North City Library, on (06) 351-4100 or visit them on the Library’s second floor. ■ Palmerston North will go off with a bang on Guy Fawkes Night, November 5th! Look to the skies above Anzac Park (Te Motu O Poutoa) at 9pm for a Kairanga Lions Firework Spectacular.

SERVICES DIRECTORY Blanchetts fine furniture say thanks What an extraordinary year this has been. Blanchetts Fine Furniture of 58 Napier Road, Palmerston North is so grateful for the business support of the people of the Manawatu region. Much of our business used to come from outside of our region with the sale of new furniture of which we specialise in manufacturing traditional English and American style sofas and chairs. As well as manufacturing, Blanchetts supply curtain making and interior design consultancy services which have been well used. We see this as one of the many positive signals of the resurgence in our region’s economy. People are now more inclined

to have their weary sofas and chairs recovered. Our message is to consider refurbishment if the chair frame is solid. We can restore comfort levels; enhance the looks, and save sending more to our already burgeoning landfills. Blanchetts Fine Furniture use traditional methods of furniture making and restoration. Solid natural New Zealand timber frames are made by Tony Williams of Snake Gully Joinery and Bill Dear of Homewood Furniture. Furniture repairs are completed by Bill Dear and Brian Boyes of Woodcraft Restoration. Add to this blend, Bruce who is a first class traditionally trained upholsterer, Vicki with huge sewing experience, Judy with Interior Design and Alan our

new apprentice and you can guarantee your project is in the safe hands of a very experienced team. Blanchetts’ factory, showroom and fabric displays are located at 58 Napier Road, Palmerston North. Look for our kerbside sign between Kruzin Customs and Kev’s Tyres almost opposite the Terrace End Cemetery main gates. Blanchetts contact details are: work (06) 358-1227 mob (021) 932-693, email john@blanchetts or visit our website at www.blanchetts.com We really appreciate your ongoing support and say a huge thank you to you, the people of our region.

CHARACTER: The stunning front garden of this renovated villa includes a mix of colours and plant and paving textures that give the space a contemporary feel while still complementing the traditional architecture of the house. The owners wanted a lush, green and subtropical look for the garden, with each area having its own identity. Landscape designer Kirsten Sach has created a friendly, open space where the family can interact with neighbours and activities in the street. At the same time the garden enhances the character of the house, giving it that vital 21st century attribute—street appeal.

After a lot of love and a designer’s help this garden boasts greatness

F

MANAWATU

ACED with a sloping site covered with kikuyu grass around a newly renovated villa, landscape designer Kirsten Sach was keen to fully exploit its potential. ‘‘I love working with character homes and creating entertaining areas. Having a complete blank canvas as well as a client who was passionate about gardening was a bonus. Also the fact it had a sloping aspect meant I could play around with levels and use them to define the different spaces.’’ Now the slope has gone and been replaced with a beautifully organised,

multilevel garden—both front and back —that provides a variety of different outdoor spaces for the couple who own the home and their growing family. In spring and summer the front garden constantly catches the attention of passers-by. Tiny blue flowers of the ground cover Isotoma fluviatilis and strappy mondo grass surround the large rectangular paving slabs and the huge, shiny leaves of tractor seat plant (Ligularia reniformis). More textural contrast is provided by the tiny leaves of corokia and box used in hedges and clipped topiary balls. The owners say they were keen to avoid ‘‘the usual hedge on hedge with picket fence’’ for the front of their house. ‘‘We wanted something more exciting. People are always stopping to look at it. We wanted to be able to walk out there but we didn’t want a lawn, so the stepping-stone pavers work well.’’ Their designer is equally enthusiastic. ‘‘It was just a sloping piece of lawn with one kowhai tree and no fence before. It didn’t do justice to the house. The contrast between then and now is huge,’’ says Sach. The only maintenance required is cutting the leaves

of the Ligularia back when they start yellowing, and a sprinkling of sheep pellets twice a year, Sach says. Although it’s usually planted in shadier spots, Ligularia does just as well in the sun and has a much tighter habit. ‘‘The blue-flowering ground cover can be quite vigorous but it responds well when you cut it back.’’ This talented designer has created an entrance garden that responds beautifully to the villa’s architecture and its modern interior.

‘‘The reason I used ground covers and pebbles around cast in situ pavers in this space is to give a traditional look that is also very contemporary,’’ says Sach.

GREENSPACE: Clipped box balls and corokia hedges are a nod to the historic character of the villa, as is the low picket-style timber fence, which gives the garden a strong connection to the street, above left; stepping-stone concrete pavers of different sizes allow access through the garden on both sides and add variety to the ground plane, giving the space a dynamic feel, above right.

A comeback for assured tints Defining feature walls in distinctive hues is a sign that home decorators want vibrancy in their lives and in their rooms

T

here’s no quicker, easier or more affordable way to make a statement in a room than to give it a coat of bright-coloured paint. But, if you’re nervous about using too much colour, you can play it safe and still make a statement by introducing a feature wall.

?

Feature walls—now often referred to as statement walls—add vibrancy and personality without overpowering the rest of the room, and they allow you to be more daring with colour without having to go all out. Paint is not your only option. There are many other creative alternatives.

Have you booked your stand?

of stripes you want. You might want thin stripes and thick stripes all in one go and lots of different colours —that looks really good in kids’ rooms in pastels. Painting is more versatile than wallpaper if you want stripes.’’ Accent colours are also a means of changing the mood of a room. Brilliant colours give a room energy and vibrancy, while softer, tonal colours create a calming, relaxed atmosphere. ‘‘It’s really very personal,’’ says Sarah. ‘‘I’ve met a lot of people recently who are using full-on colour. People are getting confident. I’ve done a lot of oranges recently and blues and greens. ‘‘But then, at the other end of the scale, there are those people who will just go up the neutral scale from something like Resene Thorndon Cream to Resene Triple Thorndon Cream. ‘‘Whether using adventurous colours or more toneddown hues, feature walls can help to anchor or define separate areas within large spaces. In a living room, an accent colour may be used on one wall to define it as a reading corner. ‘‘In an open-plan kitchen a feature wall may be used to mark out the dining area.

‘‘Using a textured paint-on wallpaper and then painting it the same colour as the room is one option,’’ says Resene colour consultant Sarah Gregory. ‘‘Or a tonal colour rather than a block of full-on colour. Or you could use a nice statement wallpaper.’’ While a statement wall provides a focal point to a room, it can also transform it, making it appear larger or wider, cooler or warmer, even more intimate. A statement wall can enhance a room’s best features or downplay its weaknesses. A bold floral design, for example, not only injects personality, it can help to disguise uneven walls, and stripes are a great tool for increasing the sense of space within a room. ‘‘Both horizontal and vertical stripes can give you the illusion of a room being bigger (horizontal stripes widen a wall while vertical stripes make it appear taller), just like if a woman wore a striped top,’’ says Sarah. ‘‘There are lots of stripes coming through in wallpaper at the moment, but painting stripes is much easier than trying to find a wallpaper that’s got the particular width

SERVICES DIRECTORY GOLDEN TAKEAWAYS Golden Takeaways, at 515 Main Street, or most commonly known around Palmerston North as GTs, has been around for the past 30 years and it is common to see more than one generation of regular customers patronising the store. One of the unique features of GTs is that it does not close at all during the day and is open until 3am on club nights, namely Thursday through to Saturday, providing patrons with great food into the wee hours of the morning. It is almost impossible to get in through the door after 2.30am as massive crowds start preparing to

burger deals; pay only $5 for two burgers, or get one burger, a can of drink and a small portion of chips. Different to other takeaway shops, GTs burgers come with extra fillings at no extra charge! Customers drive from Wanganui, Linton, Levin, Foxton, and Feilding to get their favourites at GTs. The most popular dishes at GTs are the massive fish burgers, their chicken fried rice and noodles, sweet n sour pork, honey chicken and stir-fry vegetable dishes. Although the economy in New Zealand has taken a toll in recent months as costs continue to

leave town, getting some food on the way. Another special feature of GTs is that it offers great deals on cheap food that tastes good. The takeaways containers for Chinese meals are large in comparison to other takeaway shops and the portions are generous. Besides Asian cuisine, GTs sells massive fish n chip packs with very reasonable prices: individual packs start at just $5 and you can feed the family with one of our larger packs for only $25. GTs is also the first takeaway shop in town to start the $5

They regularly comment on the hardship of feeding and clothing their children while working a fulltime job, and the difficulty of finding cheap takeaway food that is still high quality. Big Mazda breaks ground with choice of models By COLIN SMITH The Mazda CX-9 family has been extended to include an entry-level front wheel drive. For the first time since its early 2011 launch in New Zealand, the big Mazda CX-9 is being offered in a choice of models. The newcomer is a front-wheel-drive variant of the seven-seat crossover that allows Mazda to position a CX-9 model below $60,000. The new CX-9 FWD Limited is priced at $58,490 and joins the AWD Limited+ model which continues unchanged with a $65,490

pricetag. With front-wheel-drive the CX-9 features the same 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine and six-speed automatic transmission and its Limited specification includes most of the luxury features from the AWD model. Shared between both models are the leather and suede interior trim, 10-speaker 277-watt Bose audio system with 5.8-inch (15cm) touchscreen control, satellite navigation, reversing camera, three-zone climate control, power sunroof and power adjustable/heated front seats. Both models have high-gloss 20-inch alloy wheels. It is mainly the active driver-assist

technologies which are not included in the front-wheel-drive model. Blind-spot monitoring, forward obstacle warning, automatic high beam head light control and land departure warning are not part of the FWD Limited specification. The Smart Key Access system, Bi-Xenon headlights with LED Daytime running lights and remote tailgate operation also remain exclusive to the AWD Limited+ model. Fuel consumption is fractionally improved for the front-wheel-drive model with the combined cycle consumption rated

at 11.0 litres per 100km, compared with 11.2L/100km for the AWD model. At the same time as introducing a new version of its biggest model, Mazda has also announced 2014 model year changes to the Mazda2 hatchback including a $19,995 price point for the Mazda2 Classic with manual transmission and some new exterior colours including zeal red, jet black and blue reflex. The Mazda2 Sport model has the additional colours matched with gunmetal finish alloy wheels and red seat trim and steering wheel stitching.

Big world for small dog PET PROJECT with Shivaun Statham

My chihuahua is a great little companion and I love him to bits but I have a lot of trouble with him in social situations. Whenever I have friends over Chino will hide, or not move from his bed. Taking him for walks is difficult as he flinches at anything that comes by us, whether it be another person, a car or even a bird. A lot of the time I have to drag him by the lead to get him to walk past other people and he always tries to hide behind my legs, which makes walking quite frustrating as we tend to get tangled up. I would love to be able to introduce him to other dogs to play, but at this rate I just want to work on making him more comfortable. Some dogs are naturally more anxious and timid and this is common in little dogs such as Chihuahuas. When everything is so big and they’re so little the world can be a scary place.

I would strongly recommend that you get a dog behaviourist to assess Chino and put some behavioural therapy in place. This behaviour is likely to get worse, and if Chino becomes very frightened he could start to show fear aggression. In the meantime, when people come over to the house, have them completely ignore Chino — they should not look at him at all. Where possible, guests should throw treats to him from a distance, but still not give him any attention. By doing this, it will help start to build a positive association for Chino with people who visit. The treat tactic may also help get Chino into a crate, which is like an indoor kennel and available at most pet stores. You can set the crate up in your living room and put Chino’s bed into it. You can feed Chino in it and put extra toys inside to encourage him to use it.

Make sure you don’t force him in it, just praise him when he goes in by himself. Over time, it’s likely that Chino will see the crate as a safe place for him to retreat to when he’s feeling anxious. Try to avoid putting Chino into situations with lots of strange people or dogs. The behavioural therapy your behaviourist provides should allow Chino to get used to these kinds of situations gradually.

Shivaun Statham, from Purina, is a trained vet nurse and dog behaviourist who answers questions on the free Purina petcare line — 0800 PET VIP. If you have questions or concerns about your pet’s health, behaviour or diet email Shivaun at regionalfeatures@apn.co.nz

Crouch,

Touch, Paws! Keep your pet safe during fireworks Rockets and crackers are great fun for us, but even the tiniest of pops can upset some pets. These noises sometimes stress pets to the point where they may become disoriented or get hurt in their panic to get away. A frightened animal may become lost, get hit by a car, or even be injured directly from the fireworks themselves.

got all round protection this summer? You can - simply purchase any FRONTLINE® Plus cat or dog pack, or two packs of BROadLINE® spot-on solution for cats from Totally Vets, and go in the draw to win one of 10 ShadE 7 Umbrellas, or an outdoor furniture set to the value of $10,000.* Your pets will also thank you as they are getting the best flea protection and worm control this summer.

The following tips will help pet owners minimise pet panic during this noisy time: • Take your dog out for a long walk late afternoon. Feed all pets mid to late afternoon. Tired pets with full tummies are more likely to be sleepier. • If you are leaving your dog at home while you watch the display, make sure your pet is safely tucked away in a kennel or in a safe and secure room in the house, with some favourite toys. • Keep your cat inside during this time. Lock the cat flap and make sure there is a litter tray inside. • Draw the curtains to help keep the noise down and the lights out. Provide a cosy bed with a new toy and/or chew. Put the TV or some music on. These will provide a distraction. • If your cat gets very anxious, put him/her in a cat cage with a blanket or towel over the top. Do the same with any caged animals like rabbits or guinea pigs.

• If your vet has prescribed any sedative drugs for the evening, ensure they are given at the time advised, for maximum effectiveness. • In case your pet does run away, ensure he/she is either wearing a collar with identification, or is microchipped. Lock all exits! • Don’t punish your pet if he or she is scared. Punishment will make him/ her more anxious and confirms that there is something to be frightened of. • A frightened animal needs clear and calm support from its owner – if you show your pet there is nothing to be frightened of it will often help them to feel better. It is OK to pat and comfort your pet if they are frightened, but you should do so in a calm, soothing and non-stressful way. • Try to avoid late evening walks for at least a week prior to and after the event – there are often isolated fireworks during this time. Remember that firework components, whether exploded or unexploded, are toxic.

Helen Sheard, Totally Vets

If you think your pet may need sedating during fireworks or any other noisy event, please ring Totally Vets Feilding for advice. Your pet my need to see a vet first before a sedative can be prescribed.

Celebrating 100 Years 2013

marks 100 years since Longburn Adventist College was established on its current site in Walkers Road, Longburn. A special commemorative service was held earlier this month where current and former students celebrated the shared history of the college.

fully and Mr Sharp notes, “Students rise to the expectation that they will be successful and often surprise us how well they do. We track their success when they leave college and it is very pleasing to see so many going on to successful tertiary study.”

Originally the campus was part of a dairy farm of around 200 acres, a market garden and some large glass houses, all of which provided income to the college. Today the 30 acre campus is part of a smaller farm and the beautiful tree-covered campus has a park-like atmosphere.

LAC is also a boarding college with students from New Zealand, Australia, Japan, PNG, Thailand, Pitcairn, Tonga and the Cook Islands in the dormitories. This creates a cosmopolitan student community. “A rather happy community”, observes Mr Sharp.

“We’re blessed to be in the country, a rural secondary school quite close to Palmerston North”, comments Mr Bruce Sharp, the Principal. “There are real advantages being surrounded by farmland but the majority of our students still come from Palmerston North. We’ve been described as the best kept secret in the Manawatu!”.

The college is a state-integrated school well supported by the local Christian churches in Palmerston North. The college is bound by its Integration agreement to provide education to students from the local Christian community and Bible is a compulsory subject for all students. At senior level this is a NCEA subject.

LAC, as the college is generally known locally, has carved out for itself an enviable academic reputation. It is a decile 6 school but its NCEA results surpass the average for most decile 10 schools. The college has an expectation that students will stay at college and complete NCEA Level 3 and most do. There’s also an expectation that they will complete NCEA Level 3 success-

One hundred years ago Longburn was exclusively a Seventh-day Adventist College. Today it serves the wider Christian community in Palmerston North, the Manawatu and the wider Pacific area.
