Focus on Meningitis By

FRANKIE WEBB frankie.webb@chronicle.co.nz

If you were vaccinated for Meningococcal Meningitis B during the Government campaign from 2004 to 2008 you are no longer immune, and there is no vaccine available in New Zealand any longer. Tomorrow is the sixth World Meningitis Day recognised in 28 countries. The day is held annually to raise the profile of meningitis. Meningitis is a disease that can affect anyone, anywhere and at any time. Infection occurs through exposure to discharge from the nose or throat of a person who is infected. You can carry and spread the disease having no symptoms yourself. Every year more than 1.2 million people globally contract some form of meningitis. Horowhenua has had it’s share of both MenzB and MenzC. The disease tends to raise its ugly head during the colder months of the year, but not exclusively. ‘‘I want to get the word out there to get vaccinated, get your kids vaccinated,’’ said Lisa Gallagher, whose daughter Tesh succumbed to MenzC in 2012. ‘‘I work in a school, I see kids taking turns to drink out of water fountains and I cringe. Kids share things, but they have no understanding of the consequences.’’ ■ See page 25 for their story.

HEART-FELT CONNECTION: Levin Unichem pharmacist Chris Costello offers Mark and Lisa Gallagher the Meningococcal Meningitis C vaccination. The Gallaghers’ daughter Tesh died in 2012 just five hours after contracting Menz C. The Gallagher’s are spreading the word of their own experience in an effort raise awareness the disease is a killer and the fact vaccination for at least the C strain is available. For more information visit www.meningitis.org.nz or http:/ /www.health.govt.nz/our-work/ diseases-and-conditions/ meningococcal You can talk to your doctor or practice nurse, or go to the Ministry of Health website www.moh.govt.nz/ meningococcal or the Immunisation Advisory Centre website www.immune.org.nz or by calling the free immunisation helpline 0800IMMUNE (0800 466 863).

Vaccination against Meningococcal Meningitis C is available in New Zealand but there is no vaccination for the most common strain, Meningococcal Meningitis (MenzB). From 2004 to 2008 the Government launched a vaccination campaign against Menz B. Anyone vaccinated during that time no longer has protection. The Gravatt family, whose son Zac, 22, died from MenzC in 2009, set up a company to bring the Menz C vaccine into New Zealand and to make it affordable and available. Only one dose is required to give up to eight years protection. Eligible students can add the cost to their student loan. Unichem Pharmacy, Oxford Street, Levin has qualified staff administering MenzC vaccinations or visit your GP.

Better safe than sorry saves teen’s life In June 2005 Horowhenua College student Louise Duncan developed a stiff arm and went to bed early. She woke at 5am and vomited. The radio news announced a flu epidemic had closed Wellington schools, and she and her parents were convinced Louise had flu. Dozing off and on, she lapped up the sunshine pouring into her room, didn’t feel like eating but drank plenty of water.

At 5pm her mum noticed a rash had developed on Louise’s palms and soles. Unable to raise a GP, her parents went to Palmerston North A&E unit deciding better to be safe than sorry. While waiting at the hospital Louise began to lose the use of her limbs; within two hours she had seizured, suffered strokes, was paralysed and put into an induced coma. She remained in intensive care

for more than a week. Diagnosis to enable treatment took days while a culture was grown. It was confirmed, despite having had the first vaccination in a series of three, Louise had contracted meningococcal meningitis B. Extensive rehabilitation, frequent visits to hospital during the following years and daily medication for seven years meant Louise was one of the lucky ones.

Snapper quota

I totally agree with Rob McCann. The snapper quota that has been imposed on the recreational fishermen is a farce. It is not a serious attempt to limit catches for the purpose of conservation. It is an attempt to fool the public into thinking that National actually is making an effort to conserve the stocks while allowing big business to continue to over fish the oceans as ever, to our detriment. The big businesses are the ones that are really depleting the stocks not the recreational fishers. YVONNE SUMMERS Levin

Council charges

It is going to cost you more to die and have dogs in Horowhenua as the Horowhenua District Council increase charges on cemetery fees, as well as increases in dog control, parks and reserves, solid waste and water charges. This was well explained in the agenda for the next council meeting but may be seen as confusing by those persons who do not apply themselves to carefully reading the 2014-2015 Draft Annual Plan (DAP) or Council agendas. It is to be hoped that residents and ratepayers put in submissions to not only the DAP but also to the reviews of the Water Supply Bylaw (with the supplied useful and proven advocacy for water conservation) and the Solid Waste Bylaw (which currently has no useful guidelines for the regular pickup of electronic waste). No wonder flytipping of old computers etc. is occurring or they get smashed up into little pieces and are secreted in the domestic rubbish bags for collection. A sudden surge in rates may discourage some people from retiring or shifting to what is promoted as the best rural lifestyle place in New Zealand to live and retire in. However, the public memory is often conveniently short and those who do remember what the Horowhenua District Council ratified in the past will have to agree that no fuss or consideration of

THIS stunning Easter scene was shot by Horowhenua Camera Club member Gordon Henry at Foxton Beach. Mr Henry said he quite often uses a cross in his scenes to add interest but this shot was set up a couple of weeks ago with Easter in mind. ‘‘Getting the right sunset is always a bit hit and miss but I always keep an eye out on the sky and this time got lucky,’’ he said. Well, it’s catchup time. To make it clearer for those readers who do not understand financial reports, ‘‘the roof of the house is leaking and we’re now forced into replacing it’’. Furthermore if this council is seen as having a wish list then it’s up to the ratepayers to make up their minds on the difference between needs and wants and the only way that message gets across is by putting in a submission and

High winds leave trail of damage Many Levin residents will have woken to sounds of chainsaws and hammers on Friday morning, relieved that the damage wreaked by the tail end of cyclone Ita on Thursday was relatively minor compared with other parts of the country. Wind gusts of up to 120kmh were recorded through Levin, Foxton and Shannon. Police, fire services and contractors were on constant callout throughout the day with an estimated 31 calls in less than 24 hours for the Levin Volunteer Fire Brigade, who were assisted by Otaki brigade. Trees were uprooted, an air conditioner unit had to be refixed to an Oxford Street building, a trampoline was reported on the railway line by Plimmer Tce in Shannon, roofs had to be nailed down, debris and recycling bins flew down roads and a greenhouse was smashed at the Blueberry Farm on SH1 just outside Levin. Frequent minor power cuts were experienced as lines were blown together or trees fell on them causing outages. A railway crossing arm at the Queen St East crossing was

At about 1am on Sunday the crew of the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter, loaded up and responded to a call to Raetihi for a woman suffering a medical emergency. She was stabilised by St John paramedics before being airlifted to Wanganui Hospital. The mission was completed with the aid of Night Vision Goggles. On Monday at about 4pm the rescue helicopter crew responded to a call to Taihape where a five-year-old boy had suffered a medical emergency. Due to the urgent nature of the condition the boy was transported by road to Hunterville where the fire brigade was on scene to assist with landing security. The boy was then taken by helicopter to Wanganui Hospital.

Poppy Pillars attract attention There’s another ANZAC focal point in Levin. Enliven’s rest homes, Reevedon and Levin Homes have created Poppy Pillars to commemorate this year’s Anzac Day. The Poppy Pillar in Levin home’s dining room has seen residents, staff, families, local school children, and even contractors taking time to remember the fallen as they make a poppy for the centre piece. Levin Home enrolled nurse Vicki Close said that they had come up with the idea to cover the pillars with homemade poppies after hearing about the RSA’s appeal for members of the public to join together and knit 5000 poppies to go on a war collage. ‘‘We decided that we would do our own twist on the idea!’’ Ms Close said. She said everyone wants to take part and we’ve had people using wool as well as red fabric, paper and card to put their own unique stamp on their poppy. The Poppy Pillars are filling up fast but the homes are still looking for more poppies to add to the display. Ms Close says if anyone would like to make a poppy to add to the pillar then pop into one of the homes and they will be happy to add your creation. Enliven’s Levin Home has a proud history of supporting New Zealand’s war veterans. Today the home continues to support those who fought for our country, along with both women and children who also experienced the impact of World War I and World War II. If you would like to attend Levin Home’s annual Anzac Day service attend the home at 9am on Friday. They hope to see you there!

Watch out: Scams hurt kindly suckers

STARTING THURSDAY

By PETER FRANKLIN Scams are the curse of a modern world, preying on the lonely, vulnerable and the greedy. However, how often do we actually hear about the hurt they cause? Community Constable Graeme Jarvis (pictured) does and it sickens him. Mr Jarvis said over the past couple of years he has heard tales that would bring a decent person to tears. He said the modern scam is well presented and on the surface seems very genuine, but people should look carefully before getting involved. ‘‘There is a true old saying, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.’’ Mr Jarvis said he has spoken to people who have been caught out and some who have been on the brink and for some reason not taken it any further. Mr Jarvis said scams appear in a huge variety of formats, including personal letters, emails and by telephone. Where do they originate? ‘‘That is hard to pinpoint. Ghana, Spain, Holland, Canada, England,’’ he said. One of the most common scams comes in a letter, generally from a person purporting to be a lawyer, who has been searching for family members of a deceased person who left an estate worth millions of dollars. Or perhaps it’s a business deal from an African business partner who wants to develop an agent in New Zealand to hold millions in funds for future investment. The scams that prey on people’s loneliness and kind nature are the ones that really sicken Mr Jarvis. ‘‘Two in particular come to mind — an older woman who had been contacted by a family in financial need, the communications she received groomed her for the scam, over time she sent a total

of $10,000 to help this family; and an older local man who was lonely and looking for companionship. ‘‘He made contact with a person on a dating site, and over time developed what he thought was a genuine relationship, till the crunch came and he was asked to help out with a large deposit to a bank account.’’ Mr Jarvis said scams have one thing in common: they all ask for an amount of money to be sent before anything can proceed; the sums vary in size but Mr Jarvis said people will only end up disappointed and out of pocket. ‘‘My advice is, if you get a phonecall or an email offering something that is financially rewarding, hang up or delete it, mail dump it,’’ he said.

All fun at the Foxton Easter Fair STORY AND PHOTOS BY FRANKIE WEBB Call it devine intervention, fate or luck but whatever it is Foxton Easter Fair seems to have it. In 22 years it has never been cancelled. Just the same as last year, near cyclonic conditions leading up to Easter Sunday abated for most of the day, that day dawned fine with light sea breezes. Levin battled winds and heavy showers while Foxton fair goers were sunning themselves listening to the strains of guest band Henpicked. The stalls seemed busy but space wasn’t at quite the premium of last year. A number of fairgoers commented it made getting around everything easier. Food stalls were busy and a lot of new, and not so new, trade stands doing a steady turnover. The Foxton Easter Fair began over two decades ago as ‘entertainment’ for people coming to the area for Easter holidays. A group of locals believed there was nothing happening in the town and the Easter Fair was born. It has returned more than $200,000 back to the community from gate takings and profit.

Old bonds reforged

By TANYA WOOD The Waiopehu College Class of ’88 showed they still had what it takes on and off the sporting field at their reunion last weekend, taking on the Levin Barbarians and raising almost $10,00 for the Levin War Veterans Home. What had started as a get-together of the old First XV rugby team evolved into a full class reunion and fundraiser. About 100 former students from the Levin college arrived with families, from as far as Scotland, Singapore, Hawaii and Australia for the four-day event, which included sporting fixtures, a quiz night, black-tie dinner and charity auction. After a netball match between the ‘‘boys and the girls’’, in which the boys were ‘‘soundly thrashed’’ 27-6, the lads were able to redeem themselves in an ’80s-style rugby match, taking on a Levin Barbarians team made up of Levin Wanderers, Levin Old Boys and Athletic rugby clubs in three 20-minute games. Played using rugby rules and an old style brown leather ball from the ’80s, the First XV from 1985-88, renamed the Waiopehu Reunionists and kitted out in the old teal colours, performed the original college haka from 1986 ahead of the match played at the Levin Domain, eventually won by the Barbarians 32-25. Reunion organiser Jason Stewart said they gave it everything they had. ‘‘There were guys playing for their lives. We were pretty tired and sore afterwards and it’s fair to say some of us had new walking styles the next day.’’

THE teams line up for an ’80s-style rugby match at Levin Domain, as the 1980s Waiopehu College First XV, wearing teal colours, prepare to take on the Levin Barbarians at the Levin Domain last weekend. PHOTO: TANYA WOOD He said the camaraderie and bonds are still there 30 years on. ‘‘The ’80s just seemed to be a great era and we were all great mates in and outside the college. We just all wanted to see each other again and we had loads of fun. We’re already talking about another reunion in five years’ time.’’ The event, a year in the planning, was also an opportunity to give something back to the community. Mr Stewart said as the reunion coincided the WW1 centenary year and Anzac Day coming up, it seemed right to show their thanks for the sacrifices made by war veterans. ‘‘Quite a few of us have direct association with the Levin war vets home, having grandfathers cared for there, and we wanted to show our appreciation.’’ The event, one year in the planning, also included a charity auction which raised more than $9500 for the war veterans’ home, with additional money from collections at the rugby match, donations and sponsorship.

Then days to unwind, read, listen to lectures on the new destinations like the animals of Africa, the culture and mystique of South America or the elegant chic of the Arabian Peninsula. Plan your up and coming ports with new friends, discover the likes and dislikes or simply just chill and holiday as your cross the seas. There is nothing better than enjoying fine wine, great food and the company of good friends as you relax and unwind in your own home. So imagine the great enjoyment of discovering new friends with plenty of time to get to know each other and share experiences together on a floating paradise like an MSC Cruise. Travelling the world by sea has come a long way in the past 60 years and the era of long days at sea with nothing to do, no longer ring true. Cruise liners are destinations in themselves with plenty of dining experiences, stylish cabins and suites to choose from and a full range of indoor, outdoor, day or night activities to choose from and that’s just on the your days at sea! However if like me, you love cruising for its destinations as well as relaxation then the length of a Grand Voyages that MSC offer and the wide ports of call make this style of cruising the best combination.

MSC Cruises Grand Voyages not only provide a chance to discover peace they provide a world of beautiful ports at either end of two stunning continents. With a choice of 13 different voyages at the end of 2014 and beginning of 2015, ranging from 10 up to 22 nights, the choice is a delight that we would love to help you plan. And remember, United Travel Levin are not only the domestic and international travel booking experts but are your one-stop shop for Intercity, Interisland, Bluebridge and Rail bookings as well as offering insurance, foreign currency, passport forms and loads of travel accessories for sale in-store. We hold regular customer information evenings with our next one on 15 May at 5.30pm, featuring Greg from Uniworld, the European River Cruising specialists. These evenings are free and we serve light refreshments but bookings are essential as seats are limited.

Imagine unpacking once as the ship pulls away from the city you have just embarked from, only to awaken the next morning pulling into a new city and the excitement it brings. In the Mediterranean you can explore the buzz of Barcelona, or ride the hop on, hop off bus around town. Enjoy the cobblestone beauty of Lisbon or enjoy the flash and pageantry of a flamenco dancer twirling on the streets of Seville. LVN230414splreunion4

MTA News Muaūpoko Property and Cultural Redress Workshop #2

The latest hui-a-iwi workshop run at Kohuturoa Marae in Levin on Saturday had a great turn out attracting a number of new faces, among them 95 year old ‘Nanny’ Noa Nicholson’s. Her knowledge of the cultural and historical value of many sites within Muaūpoko’s rohe is unparalleled. However, her presence provided a sense of focus for many people at the hui. It is always a honour to have someone of Nanny Noa’s calibre attend these hui because she is one of the few people who can provide historical context to the discussions. The workshop also included representatives from some of our whanau living in Danniverke which was a welcome addition to numbers. The purpose of this hui-a-iwi was to further develop the work and results from the previous workshop held at the same venue on Saturday 22 March. More work was done identifying the

Crown properties available for Muaūpoko as well as revisiting key redress instruments and mechanisms. More hui and wananga on this and other subjects are to be held in the following weeks and months. These activities are open to all Muaūpoko members. Dates will be shortly available on our website and Facebook pages.

At around 2.30pm on Monday the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter responded to a Search and Rescue callout in the Tararua Ranges where a man had suffered a leg injury. The 48-year-old was in a party of four family and relatives, hunting deer in the Tokomaru River valley. The man, along with his 13-year-old son who was mildly hypothermic, were airlifted to Palmerston North for treatment, the remainder of the party were transported to their car at a road-end near Tokomaru.

ROUNDABOUT SET TO IMPROVE SAFETY A new roundabout being constructed at the intersection of Queen Street and Weraroa Road in Levin is designed to improve the safety of both motorists and pedestrians alike. Horowhenua District Council operations manager Glen O’Connor said the new roundabout

will better control vehicle speeds and provide safer travel through the busy intersection that is close to schools and recreational facilities. ‘‘Pedestrian and mobility scooter safety will also be greatly improved with use of refuge islands and improved crossings on approaches’’ he said.

Work on the roundabout, which started last week with trenching for stormwater improvements at the site, is scheduled for completion by the end of June. ■ For more information, contact Glen O’Connor on 06 366-0999 or glenoc@horowhenua.govt.nz

Mitchpine continues to grow Building good customers relationships has been the key factor in Mitchpine Products growth over the past five years. To ensure they have the technology in place to maintain that growth, the company has moved into their new administration office, built in the later part of 2013. The company expects growth to continue and the new office complex has been designed to be one step ahead, allowing better order processing. The new office complex is the fourth the company have had since they started operations in 1985. The original office was a small caravan. Work increased and so did the need to expand the office, now they have the administration space to futureproof the growth. Jan Mitchell said the past five years have been fantastic, to have this sort of result during an economic recession is confirmation that they are doing everything right. ‘‘We

First of all it’s a family business, started by Keith Mitchell 35 years ago. The company is run by Grant (Butch) Mitchell, and his son Lee, so with three generations of local

You deal direct with staff who will do just about anything for you. There’s a big range of handgraded posts, battens, poles and gates on site and timber in just about every size and grade. In fact there’s over 300 products on site. For the home gardener there’s a big range of timber for retaining walls, fencing, sawn posts and a new range of bollards.

It’s all cut, dried and treated on site then the company’s fleet of trucks will deliver it to your place. There is a new mill at their 13.5 hectare site just 10km north of Levin. This mill has been specifically designed to cut 7.5 metre lengths of timber, a rare product with an ever increasing demand. Business is looking good with consistent sales across all markets. Mitchpine is a family run business with old-fashioned values on quality and service and a hands on approach. As the staff say, ‘‘Big enough to supply and small enough to care.’’

Running out of rooms By TANYA WOOD Tokomaru Early Childhood Centre is running out of room and funding has already started for a new purpose-built facility to cater for a growing list of pre-schoolers. The community kindergarten, which has been running for more than 30 years, is still in its original premises, a small church hall rented from the Anglican Church. Head teacher Jane Craig said while improvements have been extensive over the years, the age and area of the premises are limiting. ‘‘The kindergarten can legally operate for 20 children and this means that there is often a long waiting list.’’ She said the Tokomaru community is growing and the trend is likely to continue for some time. ‘‘A new facility is an investment not only in our children but our community and wider society.’’ The new kindergarten will cater for up to 30 children at any one time. Plans for the new building, yet to be formalised, will include a classroom, library, activity and resource area, kitchen, staff area, storage, play areas and whanau room. ANZAC DAY WW1

100 YEARS ON

This year we commemorate the centenary of the declaration of the First World War which will be in August and the 99th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign, April 25, 1915, where the Anzac spirit was born. The gallantry and sacrifices by New Zealand and Australian troops are commemorated every year on what is now known as Anzac Day. New Zealand lost 18,166 service men and women out of a population of 1,089,825 in World War I. 5,325 New Zealanders have no known grave. Horowhenua Chronicle invited readers to submit photos of relatives who had taken part in the Great War. On this page we shall remember them......

Hugh Edward Doherty. Company No. 1, 5/120, Driver. Served Cairo, Egypt. Sept.14th 1915. Died of dysentery February 1916, Cairo aged 35. He sent this letter home shortly before his death “Dear Mother, I received your welcome letter safely, am pleased you are all well at home. I am quite well myself. These are great cities to see you read of them in the Bible. We see the Star of Bethlehem it is so big. The sights at the Dardanelles are something never to be forgotten. I suppose we will be going to England in a week or so and then to France and Rome. There is plenty of work to do we are close to the River Nile near the Pyramids. The Turks are kept well back. The fireline and trenches is around us. The Turks are losing a lot of men. We have not lost many. In this country there are millions of different people. This war may not last long then I will be going home again. Goodbye Mother for the time. Yours sincerely, Hugh.”

Letter received by Hugh Doherty’s mother in Taranaki who died in August 1916: New Zealand General Hospital, Pont De Koubbeh, Cairo. 4th Feb, 1916. “Dear Madam, As Chaplain-in-residence at this hospital it has occurred to me that the Relatives and friends of those of our brave lads who have given their lives for King and Empire and whose bodies are at rest in the Cemetery at Old Cairo might like to have a picture of the Hallowed ground. I therefore have pleasure in sending a photograph which gives a very true impression of the picturesqueness of the sacred spot. Your son was buried with full military honours and according to the Rites of his Church. Yours in sincerest sympathy, Chaplain-in-Residence.”

He preached to the Maori Contingent on the eve of battle at Sari Bair, reminding them of their duty to uphold the warrior tradition of the Maori. He risked his life for others on many occasions at Gallipoli, helping carry out the wounded, distributing water and comforting the dying. He was wounded in September 1915.

CAPTAIN BERNARD FREYBERG English-born, Wellington-raised, he won New Zealand junior and senior swimming titles — feats that helped him win a Distinguished Service Order with

the Royal Navy for swimming ashore and setting flares at Bulair on April 24, 1915 to try to divert Turkish attention away from the main landing. He later added two bars to his DSO, won a VC at the Somme, commanded New

Zealand troops in WWII and became Governor-General.

John Simpson Kirkpatrick was killed by a Turkish sniper, Henderson took over, evacuating the wounded by donkey and it is believed it is a painting of him, based on a soldier’s photo, that formed part of an Anzac legend,

A restless calm By Tim Clarke

T

HEY arrived unannounced. Thousands of troops from across Australia and New Zealand, primed for war. Gathered together aboard dozens of warships, laden with horses, typewriters, ambulances, provisions and tonnes of weapons, they sailed into the King George Sound, on Western Australia’s south coast. And for the next week, the town of Albany — population 4000 — became the last Australian home many of these young, fearless men would ever know. It was late October, 1914, and the Australian Imperial Force and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force — the Anzacs — had been deployed to Europe. Just days earlier, it had been resolved they would cross the Indian Ocean on board nearly 40 ships, but they needed somewhere to gather. Albany is the oldest permanently settled town in Western Australia, pre-dating Perth and Fremantle by two years, when in 1826 it was colonised as a military outpost

as part of Australia’s resistance to French ambitions. The 110sq km sound is sheltered on all sides from winds and heavy seas — and so, was big enough, deep enough and calm enough to house the biggest fleet the Commonwealth

had ever assembled. And so they came. ‘‘Here were gathered innumerable vessels of every line trading in the southern oceans. Not painted uniformly grey like our ships, but taken in all their glory of greens, blues

and yellows, they rode on the calm water of King George’s Sound, packed with the adventurous spirits of the First Australian Division,’’ wrote Major Fred Waite, author of The New Zealanders at Gallipoli. The equally sheltered,

secluded townsfolk of Albany had never seen anything like it. ‘‘It was one of those things that snuck up on the people of Albany, and they did not know it was happening because of military censorship,’’ recounts Malcolm Traill, public programmes officer at the WA Museum in Albany. ‘‘They woke up one morning in late October to see that ships had begun to arrive in our waters . . . and the war had started.’’ The numbers of troops were huge. Thirty six ships gathered — 26 from Australia, 10 from New Zealand — to be joined later by two sailing from Fremantle. An escort convoy of six warships and one Japanese cruiser would protect the precious cargo — 20,000 soldiers, 2000 sailors and 7000 horses. Behind the fleet command vessel Orvieto would sail in the Hymettus, the Geelong, the Pera, the Omrah, the Clan Maccorquodale, the Medic, the Argyllshire, the Shropshire, and dozens of others. And for days, as the Albany townsfolk watched from the land, the ships and the men sat and waited in the harbour, while coal and fresh water were replenished.

before the storm ‘‘They were bored, sick of training and waiting for decisions; they were told when they signed up their Empire needed them and they were very keen to go and do their bit,’’ Traill says. ‘‘But they had little idea of what they were in for in the weeks, months and years ahead.’’ To help expend the nervous energy and relieve the boredom, troops were ferried ashore daily to exercise, to drill and march. Their impending sacrifice was embraced. ‘‘One of the breweries set up a stall to help refuel the marching men, and a couple of men from the brewery took a keg down and encouraged the men to get a top up to send them on their way,’’ Traill says. ‘‘And the townsfolk presented the troops with sprigs of wattle, which some placed in the Slouch Hats and that was a memory of Albany, and Australia, they would take away with them.’’ Then just as quietly as they arrived, in the early hours of November 1, the troops left, headed for Egypt, the Dardanelles and Gallipoli. Island and its lighthouse, occupied by its keeper Mr Howe and his teenage daughter Fay. And one by one, she signalled to the departing fleet in morse code, becoming for many young soldiers, the last human contact they would ever have with Australia. Weeks later, after a second convoy had also departed and Albany was returning to normality, postcards began arriving from the Middle East addressed to ‘‘The little girl on Breaksea Island’’, from the men who had hung on to that final memory of home. This year, 100 years on from the departure of the fleet, the memory of those men and what they faced will be honoured. Troops will march on Albany’s streets, as they did in 1914. Ships will gather in the sound, as they did in the days before battle. And on November 1, the day of the centenary of the first convoy’s departure, the National Anzac Centre will open, perched overlooking the waters from where the troops departed. ‘‘Albany has a special place in Australia’s history. And, hopefully, we learned our lesson, sending thousands of troops to war in one convoy knowing they would not return,’’ Traill says.

Seminar to help local businesses Te Takere is hosting two Chalkle classes led by experts focussed on helping Horowhenua business people. The first session next Wednesday, April 30 will focus on importing and exporting and the second, a week later, will discuss what is required to build a successful business. Ivan McNicholl, regional secretary of the Importers Institute and director of 360 Logistics Group (recently rebranded from Customs Agents Wellington), will be giving advice on navigating all the red tape faced by potential exporters and importers. Ivan’s years of experience will assist anyone who has spotted a gaping hole in the New Zealand market for a product already available overseas and wants to find out how to get set up, or anyone who wants to start sending their product overseas. His seminar is being held on Wednesday, April 30 at 6pm until around 7.30pm in the open meeting room. Koha gold coin donations at the door. Two business advisers from the Vision Manawatu business sector will give advice on how to build a business, being aware of common pitfalls, the value of

collaboration and engaging with strategic partners. Regional business advisers Alta Els and Karen Blair are from different backgrounds and will be able to cover any questions the audience may have. With a background in industrial psychology, Alta spent several years of her working life as a business consultant and lecturer in business. She has worked across various sectors and industries covering a wide spectrum of business related topics. Karen Blair is also the Palmerston North coordinator for Business Mentors New Zealand. After 21 years in banking, 10 of them in business banking, it was time for change, and she is one of the newest additions to Vision Manawatu. Alta and Karen will discuss what is required to build a successful business, starting with what business traits make for a good business foundation. They will also share some common mistakes that they see on a daily basis and discuss how Vision Manawatu can help as well as give an overview of

WAIOPEHU College hosted Wellington Phoenix Academy, and gained a lot of experience but lost the game.

Game good experience On Sunday April 13, Waiopehu College 1st XI football team hosted Wellington Phoenix Football Academy at Donnelly Park. The academy is made up of young players from around New Zealand and the world, who board at Wellington schools. These players train six times a week, doing fitness, skills, analysis of their games and have game days most weekends. Our boys were very excited leading up to the game, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The game was played in

great spirit, with the referee commenting on the discipline and sportsmanship of both teams. The visiting team was impressive to watch with their sharpness, skill and speed. The academy team was the winner on the day, though our team fought to the end, with an impressive second half. Waiopehu had their chances to score, but unfortunately just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net. The academy has asked us to go down to

Wellington at the end of the season to play them again, and then take our boys to a Wellington Phoenix A-League match. This was a fantastic experience for our team, and the boys appreciated all the support from teachers, family and friends on the sideline. We look forward to forming a long-term partnership with the Phoenix Academy which will give our young players the opportunity for future development and enhanced experiences to enable progress to higher levels in this international sport.

SERVICE DIRECTORY

KC Motors ready to help

In a world of throw away gadgetry and cheap and nasty products, KC Motors has a proud history of service, experience and a top quality range for the district since 1956.Offering solutions, not salesmen, KC Motors aims to help its customers keep their properties beautiful using the best brands and the best backup. This is based on its team’s extensive product knowledge, KC Motors’ history in the business, as well as great parts and service backup loan equipment for breakdowns, and pickup and delivery. The KC Motors team has a great blend of older staff with a wealth of knowledge, along with younger staff who provide the energy and drive to make things happen. Adding to the team’s experience is the recent addition of Roger Hinton, ex-Levin Motorcycle Centre, who has been in the bike industry for more than 35 years, and in the 80s held the Stihl agency. KC Motors’ staff sees it well placed to deal with new trends in the outdoor equipment industry: including the growing lifestyle block market, which is only getting stronger around the region. Another trend in the market is the move away from cheap, buy-on-impulse-

one-year and throw-it-away-the-next type of products. There has been a noticeable increase at KC Motors in customers spending money on products, especially generators and waterblasters, which are built on quality and strength rather than on price. It is not unusual for staff to see customers who have bought a waterblaster from a big-box store or online and have it rapidly breakdown, something that strengthens KC Motors’ obligation to sell on quality, not price.A case in point is KC’s line of Walker Mowers, rugged machines built for the rigours of daily commercial operation, and designed to mow virtually any property. Every detail of the Walker design has been tested in the field, and as a result every Walker is reliable, designed to perfection, and manufactured to give top performance. Nothing shows the reliability of the Walker more than the satisfaction of customers such as Repi Wright from Levin

Holiday Park. Proud owner of a Walker MCGHS, Repi mows almost 2 hectares of land at the park property. ‘‘I used to spend six to seven hours on my old ride-on, but have now reduced this to between three and a quarter and four hours mowing. Repi says a strong selling point of the mowers is the service and after-sales support received from KC Motors.

KC Motors is really accommodating and happy to help when you need assistance. The quality range of top gear continues with some of the best brands such as Stihl, Honda, Bearcat, Billygoat, and Hustler mowers; and an excellent regionwide service including picking up and delivering delivering equipment as far away as Wellington and Taihape. MENINGITIS AWARENESS 24 APRIL 2014

Don’t take the chance — get help By FRANKIE WEBB Meningitis is inflammation of the layers covering the brain and spinal cord and can be caused by a virus, fungus, parasite, bacterium Neisseria meningitis, medical conditions or some medicines. Up to 15 per cent of people carry the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease (Neisseria meningitidis) in their nose and throat without being sick. You may have it right now. In some people this bacteria goes on to cause disease, spreading through the bloodstream (causing septicaemia) or to the brain (causing meningitis). Humans are the only carriers of the disease. There are about 100 cases of meningococcal disease in New Zealand each year, it is fatal in approximately half of the cases and accounts for around 170,000 deaths around the world each year. Most cases in New Zealand are caused by group B, next most common is group C. There have been limited outbreaks of meningococcal A disease, groups W135 and Y are rare in New Zealand. People living in crowded conditions, like hostels, or who are exposed to tobacco smoke are more likely to host the bacteria. It’s not clear why the bacteria passes from the nose or throat into the blood stream in some people and not others. Menz bacteria can be transmitted from person to person through droplets of respiratory or throat secretions, eg kissing, coughing and sneezing, sharing lipgloss, cigarettes, drink bottles or cans, mouth guards, hankies, baby pacifiers (dummies) or anything that could have come into contact with secretions.

VACCINE AVAILABLE Doctors and selected pharmacies across New Zealand offer the Meningococcal meningitis C vaccine administered by full qualified vaccinators. Since the introduction of flu vaccinations through pharmacies in 2012 more than 8500 people have taken up the service. Making vaccinations easily accessed encourages people to vaccinate. Students can add the vaccination charge to their student loan if they wish. Levin Unichem pharmacy offers flu, whooping cough and Meningococcal meningitis C vaccines.

SYMPTOMS Meningitis symptoms MAY include a high fever, headache, vomiting or (in infants) refusal of feeds, sleepiness, a stiff neck and dislike of or sensitivity to bright lights, joint and muscle pains and a rash. Meningococcal disease can come on very quickly and can be difficult to diagnose because it can present like many other illnesses. Early treatment is very important. If you or someone you know has any of these symptoms immediately call your doctor or the free Healthline on 0800 611 116 at any hour of the day or night. If you have already been seen by a health professional and gone home, but are still concerned, go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital or call an ambulance phone 111. LVN140813fwtesh

MENINGOCOCCAL meningitis can strike anyone, anywhere, any age. Levin parents, Mark and Lisa Gallagher know only too well the devastation the disease can cause. In 2012 their daughter Letitia fought meningococcal C and lost. In the five hours between waking at 3am with a headache and 8am when her family were gathered at Palmerston North Hospital, 18-year-old Tesh Gallagher was gone. Lisa initiated a support group in Horowhenua for parents whose children have died due to any cause.

Meningococcal C can kill in less than 24 hours

1 in 6 people with Meningococcal C will die More than 1 in 6 will survive with lifelong disability, including loss of lilimbs, extensive scarrin scarring, hearing loss and brain injury

It’s not clear why the bacteria passes from the nose or throat into the blood stream in some people and not others.

Players Jeannette Wilson and Greg Boyle each claimed triple crowns, taking their respective singles and doubles titles, then combining to win the mixed doubles. Feeling of achievement!!! By TANIA WALKER I really am totally lost for words as far as describing how the Great Forest Events went for me on Saturday but a few small ones would be WOW, WOW, WOW!! The weather couldn’t have been better if we’d made it ourselves. I arrived with my family not too early before my race and there were cars everywhere, a bit of traffic leading up to the gate, which we sat in for all but 2 seconds before I jumped from the passengers seat advising my husband I would run ahead. I could not contain my excitement, I just wanted to get in amongst the people and start my 10km run. I was out of the car and across the paddock, flew over the stile like a real farm girl, headed for what I could only make out to be a very large inflatable finish line!! I got to the event HQ and joined the masses. The music box was pumping loud with a really good tune and it actually helped me to relax. I rushed to get my safety pins and get my bib on my great forest singlet (nice and straight), I started to do little stretches, looking around at all the people, some very serious athletes and then the normal civilians like myself all seemed to be doing little stretching movements too!! It was then time for the event briefing. It was very good and very informative which I found great as I’m definitely one who likes to know quite specific details especially when it involves putting my body on the line he he. What seemed like thousands of people started moving towards the gate and I’m thinking, oh no blow me down daisy, surely they aren’t all doing the 10km Run??? It was like a scene from a movie, everyone moving ever so slowly leading up to the start line, thousands of participants all pumped and eager, but nervous. People were

PROUD of her achievement, Tania set herself a goal and made it happen. everywhere; children, nanas and grandpas, families galore. My mum took off to the front so I was happy I had my husband to talk to leading up to the start or I might of detoured I think with all the butterflies in my tummy. We got away ok, over the starting pad and it is straight into a maneuvering game, a bit like checkers, sideways, up across that sort of thing, always looking for a gap to move forward into the clearing. I started off well, remembering all the advice from everyone, pacing myself, not getting caught up in the fast lane with the top athletes, choosing someone (a marker) to keep up with. I ran a good strong 6km before my first stop (pretty chuffed with that distance), stretched my calf muscles a couple of times and from there carried on running at a good pace, I probably walked a kilometre out of the 10 I’d say. I finished very happy and feeling on top of the world, like I’d

come first, completing it in 1hr 9mins. It was so good, I loved it and I am a bit sad it is all over now but I am determined to keep training and plan on doing similar events in the near future, maybe further afield but definitely keen to sign up for another one. I was so proud of my mum and my husband for doing the GFE with me, my friends from Wellington that came to do it also. I can not wait till next year as I can almost guarantee in a year’s time I’ll be set to do the half marathon. It was fantastic to see so many people from the region take part in the event, we really do have an awesome community. I not only have a nice shiny medal to show for my 10 week training course but I have lost 7-8kgs, I have some great healthy eating habits, and I have increased my fitness levels by 100 per cent. It proves anyone can make the changes just by the choice to enter an event, try something new, there is plenty of activities in the community to become part of, it’s just a matter of making the choice, taking the first steps and setting small achievable goals each and everyday. I’m so stoked I decided to do the Great Forest Event and even more excited that I achieved what I didn’t think I could 10 weeks ago just by making the choice to try!!
