SANTA AGAIN!:

The previous week Santa was in Beachlands, here the busy man in the red suit was at last weekend’s Clevedon Christmas Parade. It was the 14th Christmas Parade organised by the Clevedon

Residents’ Association and, as it so often does for Clevedon events, the rain held off long enough for a record 29 floats to wend their way down the main street and back again.

And then there were three! A third constable has joined the permanent policing team at Beachlands. Adrian Fisher comes to the coast with six and a half years’ experience in the police force. In front line policing for four and a half years and in road policing for the past two years, he has worked out of Otara, Howick and Ormiston stations. “I’m looking forward to a different style of policing out here on the Pohutukawa Coast as well as broadening my policing skills,” says constable Fisher. His addition to the Beachlands team means an increased police presence in the area on the

weekends. There will also be a vigilant approach to drinking and driving, particularly over summer. “It’s not so much the locals but people who come out here to the beaches from other areas over summer,” says Beachlands constable Steve Webb. “We’ll also be monitoring drivers’ speed on the roads as well.” He reminds people that the legal drink-driving blood and breath alcohol limits both dropped from December 1 this year. The new Land Transport Amendment Act (no 2) 2014 lowers the breath alcohol limit for adult drivers from 400

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (December 19th 2014)

Merry Christmas from all of us at the PC Times THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz In the Pohutukawa Coast churches’ Christmas message in this issue of the PC Times, Beachlands Baptist pastor Neil Hamilton talks about the significance of a mostly unheard of place in the Bay of Islands, called Oihi Bay. This small picturesque and slightly hard to get to bay will be of huge significance this Christmas Day. At this bay Christians will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first gospel message preached in New Zealand at that place by Rev Samuel Marsden on Christmas Day 1814. Neil talks a bit about the history of this in his Christmas message. Fran and I were privileged to go to Oihi Bay last month as part of a pilgrimage by representatives from New Zealand’s Baptist churches. It’s a 40 minute drive along a gravel road followed by a bit of a hike down a fairly steep hill. At the bay a large stone cross marks the site where Marsden preached his message from the Gospel of Luke to the 400 Ngapuhi gathTHE BIBLE SAYS: But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”(Luke 2:10-11)

ered there to listen. They responded with a hari (Te Hari a Ngapuhi – The Dance [of Joy] of Ngapuhi) that acknowledged the importance of the message they had heard. The significance of this event has largely been overlooked in our history. It led to a brief, but unprecedented, period of harmony between early settlers and Maori. Maori converted to Christianity in huge numbers and as a result the Christian faith played a key role in the early relationships between Maori and Pakeha. It was influential in the rise of spiritual leaders such as Te Whiti and Ratana – two of the most important figures in our colonial history. Only now in books such as Keith Newman’s excellent Bible & Treaty is this story being told to a wider audience. Even so, New Zealand is now one of the most secular nations in the world. Our Christian heritage has largely been forgotten or ignored and Christmas now means all sorts of different things to different people. Even in our household we’ve been having some interesting discussions about the extent to which modern Christmas is an authentic celebration of Christ’s birth, and how much of it is based on pagan traditions – some of which pre-date Christ himself.

For some of us, the birth of our Lord and Saviour will still be at the forefront of Christmas celebrations, for others it will be primarily about family and friendships. For nearly all of us it will be the opportunity to have a few days off and a bit of a rest! Whatever you do at Christmas, whatever you believe in, Fran and I wish you a safe, happy and enjoyable time with family. Once again we’ve enjoyed bringing you the PC Times and we really appreciate the feedback you give us. Newspapers all over the world face big challenges from the internet and social media, but the PC Times continues to thrive. There’s every reason to believe we will continue to produce a local newspaper for local people for years to come. Thanks especially to the many local (and some not so local) businesses who continue to support our newspaper. We hope our readers will, in turn, support them. We live in the best place in the world and that is not going to change anytime soon. God Bless you all, and we’ll be back later in January to do it all over again!

Decision not to replace Hawke Cres reserve steps ‘grave mistake’ It was with shock that I read in your paper that according to Franklin Local Board member, Malcolm Bell, the steps at the reserve at the end of Hawke Crescent, Beachlands, will not be replaced making the reserve redundant! If this is true, then it is a grave mistake. These stairs give access to the end of the sandspit which reaches out to Motukaraka (Flat Island). Motukaraka is the only genuine island that I can think of at this moment that is connected to the mainland at low tide near to (actually in) the city of Auckland. Motukaraka is a special, magical place. It’s not easy to get to – a long arcing sandpit which reaches out to the island when the tide is out, very nearly encircled by vertical cliffs. This makes the trip out to the island a real adventure. While it is true you can walk around the mainland cliffs and promontories from Sunkist Bay or Green Bay at low

tide, both of these options are cut off when the tide comes in. In reality, an adult can wade, up to chest deep in places, back from Motukaraka Island at high tide, but due to the forever changing height and position of the sand bar as well as the current across the sand bar when covered by water, this option is unsafe for children. People who leave the island when the tide is flooding, follow the sandbar and end up at the very small beach at the bottom of the steps at the end of Hawke Crescent. When you are out at Motukaraka Island, Sunkist Bay seems close and safe but in reality this avenue of escape is the way cut off first by the incoming tide. Most people who take the trouble to walk out to Motukaraka do so from Sunkist Bay as the Island stands just out from the western end of the bay. From Green Bay, Motukaraka is hidden around the cliffs at

the northern end of the beach. I personally have bumped and/or carried push chairs (Mountain Buggy) up and down these stairs more times than I can remember over the last 40 odd years, and can remember some shockingly built council stairs which were built to fail at the time. But stairs built properly by the council do last a reasonable period of time. It is nice to have an assurance that there are public stairs from the base of the spit up to the road. This is actually a safety feature, particularly for visitors from Sunkist Bay who venture out to Motukaraka Island at low tide not fully comprehending how quickly and deeply the tide comes in and cuts off their return to Sunkist Bay. The other week when myself and my son’s family walked out along Hawke Crescent to the reserve and stairs and found the access to the reserve chained off we

thought that the developers of the section next door had somehow got the council to temporarily close the reserve during their construction. It was a complete shock to read that the council were thinking of closing the reserve and stairs permanently. I urgently request

that you use the paper to lobby the Franklin Local Board, and the Auckland Council, to revisit this matter and reverse any decisions to close the reserve and/or the stairs. ROGER WALTON Beachlands

THE EDITOR REPLIES: Roger is correct in that it seems the steps are being taken down because they are in a dangeorus state of disrepair. They won’t be replaced anytime soon as there is no budget to do this. The reserve, however, is not supposed to have been closed and the expectation is that it will be cleared and returned to the condition it was in previously.

Memorial defended

Regarding the comments in the PC Times (letters Dec 12). It was never the intention of the Anzac Committee to harm or destroy the environment of Beachlands with a Memorial Garden. Quite the opposite. Seats will not be removed on the cliff top, but instead more added for your enjoyment. Sea views will not be obscured but made more open with the removal of dead and dangerous trees. Rest assured if Auckland Council approve this project the people of Beachlands will decide whether it goes ahead. They say on TV one minute’s silence is not enough. A Memorial Garden on every street corner would not be enough to thank those 18 and 19 year olds who sacrificed their lives over many years in the last 100 years, so we may live in peace. Another ‘Local Hero’ for Clevedon Hard working community volunteers are often modest people who don’t like talking about themselves. Such a person is Clevedon’s latest “Local Hero”, Judith Narbey. As part of the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards 2015, the 57 Auckland winners of the Local Heroes category were presented with their awards by Auckland Mayor Len Brown at a recent presentation ceremony at Ellerslie Race Course. Judith received her award having been nominated by a previous Clevedon award winner, Dorothy Street. Judith prefers the title “volunteer” rather than “hero”. She has been volunteering since before her son was born. He’s now 38. Judith and husband, Wallace, have lived in Clevedon for 30 years. Wallace farms beef on their 30 acres on the Clevedon Kawakawa Rd. (He’s quite a volunteer himself, with a keen involvement in the Kokako Recovery Programme in the Hunua Ranges). It might be easier to make a list of which Clevedon organisations Judith is not involved with. It would be a shorter list. She’s a library volunteer, helps run the fireworks night and Christmas parade as a member of the five person Clevedon Residents Association committee, prints and folds the Clevedon Roundup, is treasurer of the Clevedon & Districts Historical Society and volunteers at the McNicol Homestead helping with archiving etc, and she’s treasurer for the Clevedon Keas. Judith admits she does a lot of these jobs because no-one else want to do them. She says each Clevedon Residents committee member has their own task which is why the

A lot of money from the fireworks night goes back to the Clevedon community. The money is also used to help fund the security camera project – which might finally be finished soon. You published a picture of Keith Smith and his daughter starting it back in 1999!” It’s taken a very long time, but the end result will be a network of new state-of-the-art high resolution cameras in place at strategic places around Clevedon. And Judith has no plans to stop volunteering anytime soon. “It keeps you busy and you get to meet other people.”

Whitford asks for roundabout Whitford residents are asking for a roundabout near the accident-prone corner by the landfill. The proposal is coming from the Whitford Landfill Community Liaison Committee and the Clifton Peninsula Residents Association. They have written to Auckland Transport regarding their concerns over safety and congestion problems at the main road-Clifton Rd-landfil road intersection. Auckland Transport says the proposal is “under investigation.” “Residents are pressing hard for it. There have been a couple of nasty accidents at the exit road from the landfill-quarry,” says Malcolm Bell, who represents Franklin Local Board on the landfill liaison committee. “They are agitating for a roundabout at the Clifton Rd exit and are also saying that during peak hours it is quite hard to get out of Clifton Rd and onto the main road.”

Get ready to celebrate Auckland’s 175th birthday

Malcolm says the entire bend and road junction “hasn’t got much in its favour at present.” He points out that the visibility on the approaches is not good, there are big trucks coming in and out of the landfill/quarry and residents trying to get in and out of Clifton Rd. However, Malcolm is not hopeful of getting a roundabout any time soon. “It all comes back to the fact there are 10,000 traffic movements at peak hours, Monday to Friday, and until it hits 15,000 Auckland Transport is unlikely to do much. “The comparison they keep making is with State Highway 22 (Drury to Pukekohe and Waiuku). They see that road as a higher priority...it is a road that in some ways is not as good as the Whitford-Maraetai Rd.”

Taking the mystery out of weight management With the festive season upon us it’s easy to get sidetracked by the tasty goodies and glasses of Christmas cheer and forget that balance is vital for a healthy lifestyle. Weight management isn’t just about diet nor does it mean obsessively counting calories and never touching chocolate again. But with all the conflicting information in the media, what is it about? Nurse specialist Kate Berridge, a Beachlands resident, has spent seven years specialising in weight loss surgery (bariatrics) and has developed a keen understanding and knowledge of obesity and its effects. “It’s about how you think about health in general,” Kate says. “It’s more complex than simple energy in and energy out – though that is important too.” Should you be Gluten Free? Sugar Free? Carb Free? How much exercise do I need to do? Weights? Running? How do you cope with eating out or celebrations like wedding, birthdays, or Christmas? Kate wants to help take the mystery out of weight management and help people create and implement strategies to manage their health – and their weight – on a daily basis. “I’m not a dietician and I’m not here to dictate what you should or shouldn’t eat, what you should or shouldn’t do,” she says. “Life isn’t for

• Kate Berridge and Cinder. enduring – it’s for enjoying.” Kate, with support from Beachlands-based The Energy Experience, has put together a six week course designed to help people implement and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Six one hour sessions will cover a variety of topics from the importance of mindfulness to finding the exercise option that suits you best. The course will begin in late January – just in time to get those New Year resolutions firmly cemented in good habits for 2015.

Seven local organisations and individuals have benefitted from the first full year of operation by the Pohutukawa Coast Helping Hand Trust. The trust was established by long time Beachlands resident Glenn Miller with the aim of lending a “helping hand” to locals who need a bit of help to get ahead. It is aimed particularly at helping young people either through financial

assistance for a particular goal or project, or through help such as mentoring and organising work experience. The Trust was incorporated in October 2013 and the trustees are: Glen Miller (chairperson), Garry Larsen (treasurer), Melanie Llewelyn (secretary), Dr Barry Claridge and Simon Male. The Trust is funded by donations and makes financial grants on the ba-

sis of applications from potential recipients. The Trust collected over $17,000 in donations during the year and helped the following: • Maraetai Beach School staff, who were put through a ‘Corporate Challenge’ team building course, donated to the Trust by the Pohutukawa Coast Cancer Appeal 2013. The school also received some funding from the Trust to enable three students to attend their senior Year 7-8 camp, and whose families were unable to afford the fee. • The Beachlands Log Cabin Community Trust was given some

BEACHLANDS & MARAETAI Fixing the quacks at Maraetai school’s pool

It was water off a duck’s back – literally – when Maraetai Beach School opened its refurbished school pool last week. Students, staff and parents gathered around the new-look pool to watch the opening ceremony which included some words from principal Gary Veysi, the cutting of a “duck” cake and the cutting of a ribbon. But the highlight was a duck race featuring dozens of small numbered plastic ducks, with prizes going to the winning ducks’ owners. In the absence of a current, senior students ushered the ducks the length of the pool on a bow wave created by some flutter boards. The pool refurbishment was a priority for Gary Veysi during his first – and last – year at the school. He is leaving at the end of this year to take on a new position near Rotorua. Gary says the pool was not in great shape at the beginning of the year. There were problems with the pump and filter, there were cracks in the pool itself, the whole complex was in drastic need of water blasting and new paint, some barbed wire needed to be removed and trees trimmed. The school PTA fundraised about $20,000 for the project, Franklin Local Board kicked in with $2000 while Darren Retford, of Pool Boys, and a father at the school, came up with a bargain quote for tiling the pool and fixing the cracks. The work is now complete while a new filter system means less chemicals and better water quality. Tony Wallace of Local Locksmiths has come up with a new numbered key system that will allow families to use the pool over the holiday period. The PTA’s Sarah McKenzie came up with the duck race idea and heaps of local businesses sponsored a huge range of prizes “It’s been a real community effort to get the pool up and running again,” says Gary Veysi.

BEACHLANDS & MARAETAI ‘Self motivated all rounder’ receives CYFs award Whether it’s building stepladders or auditioning for New Zealand’s Got Talent, Sabrina Hemara is a gifted young woman with great potential. The 17 year old has been cared for by her foster mum, Denise Habraken, in Maraetai for the past 18 months, but has been in foster care since she was 13. Like many children and young people who come

into care, Sabrina had an unsettled upbringing bereft of boundaries. With the love of Denise and support of her social workers, Sabrina has grown into a resilient, kind-hearted and motivated leader. Sabrina maintains regular contact with her younger sister, which has allowed the pair to form a strong bond. She works hard to be a role model to her.

Maraetai’s Sabrina Hemara (middle) with Social Development Minister Anne Tolley and Maori All Black Joe Royal, who was one of the guest speakers at the awards ceremony which honoured the achievements of young people in foster care.

A self-motivated allrounder who is equally adept behind a soccer ball or a guitar, the budding songwriter has recently returned from Ethiopia where she helped build earthen homes with Habitat for Humanity. Looking to the future Sabrina wants to join the NZ army and be a field engineer or driver. She is one of nineteen young people who have overcome tough beginnings to achieve in their chosen field and become leaders, to receive a Child, Youth and Family William Wallace Award. Nominated by their foster carers, social workers, teachers, siblings, or other supporters, these young people have all overcome tough starts to their lives to become confident, resilient, determined achievers and role models to their peers. Some of the young people have achieved academically, others have shown outstanding sporting ability, and others are accomplished

musicians. These awards – of up to $3000 – will help them take the next step in their lives. This could be further study or training, or taking part in a leadership course like Outward Bound. Sabrina will next year use her award to do an Outward Bound course. “I am so proud of myself, for coming this far. It feels so good. It’s lifechanging,” says Sabrina.

Students between the ages of 5 - 13 were involved, performing various plays and skits including a love triangle between a fairytale prince and three princesses, Dr Seuss’ “Oh the Places You’ll go!”, audience interactive theatresports skits, a dance routine by The Dance Corner and a hilarious twist on the Brother’s Grimm’s “Hansel & Gretel” by Jannette Jaquish. “I’m so proud of all the students involved, they did such a fabulous job and made themselves and their families proud,” says Natalie Hugill, Director and Head Tutor at Defying Gravity. $100,000? Not in my lifetime! In 1976, when I first started selling Real Estate here in Beachlands/Maraetai, I made a classic property mistake. I listed a house for $30,000 in Omana Esplanade and I questioned the owner how he could possibly want $30,000 when only a few years earlier I was selling houses in Ponsonby for just $10,000 and $12,000. I will never forget his reply to me: “One day all the houses in Omana Esplanade will be worth $100,000”. I replied, “Not in my lifetime!”. At the time I could not comprehend that the property values would ever reach that high, but I was forgetting about one of the most powerful laws on the planet; the power of compounding value! Mobile swim pool comes to Clevedon Kidz Children at the Clevedon Kidz Get Set 4 School Centre have had an opportunity to explore something new this term – swimming lessons. Each Friday, Captain Awesome (aka Alan, a swim instructor with

11 years’ experience) brings his mobile pool to the centre and the children participate in 20 minute sessions that increase their water confidence and skills. The children look forward to swimming day with much anticipation,

Lucie Hunt, Montana Wood and Shaelyn Sabatier waiting for their turn to swim.

and eagerly await their turn to swim in the heated pool. Alan has built a great relationship with the children. He spends time encouraging the less confident to par-

ticipate, and has built on the foundation skills of floating and kicking, with all of the children. Parents are able to witness the swimming lessons for themselves via a monitor set up within

the Centre. Progress reports are available to the parents, but the enthusiasm of the children to participate in their swimming lessons is testament in itself.

year! Not only is the 25th of December 2014 a celebration of the birth of Jesus, it’s also a celebration of the 200th year of the birth of the Church in this nation. The inaugural service in New Zealand took place on the 25th of December 1814 in the picturesque setting of Oihi Bay in the Bay of Islands. Rev Samuel Marsden preached the first Christian message at a service organised by a Maori chief, Ruatara, a young Ngapuhi leader from the Bay of Islands. Marsden’s initial plan to begin a Mission Station in New Zealand was delayed due to the ill-treatment of Maori by Pakeha. This led to social and political instability – particularly in Northern New Zealand. Marsden meet Ruatara on a ship sailing from England to Australia (Ruatara had attempted to enter England but

was refused entry at the border). On arrival in Australia Marsden looked after Ruatara and taught him new methods of farming including growing wheat. By 1812 Ruatara returned to his home in Oihi, Bay of Islands, and shared stories of his adventures in different worlds, his new found wheat growing skills and his ability to make bread. In 1814, Marsden was given permission by the Governor of New South Wales (whom he was accountable to) to open up contact with New Zealand. That year Marsden sailed across the ditch and built upon a foundation already laid by his friend Ruatara. On Christmas Eve 1814, Ruatara, on his own initiative organised a space where New Zealand’s first church service was held. It was an open air service with a

reading desk, pulpit and old canoes as pews. This is a foundational event in New Zealand history. It ranks alongside Maori and Able Tasman in 1642, Maori and Cook in 1769 and the signing of the Treaty in 1840. The date 25 December 2014 celebrates the birth of Jesus and the 200th celebration of the birth of the Church in New Zealand. Come and enjoy this dual celebration at a church near you. On behalf of the churches on the Pohutukawa Coast, have an awesome Christmas. RIGHT: Buck and Olwyn Pound at the Marsden Cross in Oihi Bay during a recent visit by New Zealand Baptist church representatives. Buck and Olwyn were long time Beachlands residents before moving to a retirement village near Thames some years ago.
