Grandparents from around the country and even abroad congregated with their loved one for a special celebration at St Anthony’s School in Seatoun on Friday. The Catholic primary school held a mass for pupils and their families to mark Grandparents Day, a tradition that has been held there for nine years. Although not recognised in New Zealand, Grandparents Day is held in many countries on various dates. Principal Jennifer Ioannou says the day is celebrated at the school just before Labour Day in order to give visiting grandparents a chance to stay with their families for the long weekend. ‘Human’ penguins send message about climate change Using theatre to turn people into penguins was a symbolic way to highlight some of the planet’s most vulnerable species in this year’s global Aotearoa Climate Change Theatre Action events in Wellington. Massey University’s Associate Professor Elspeth Tilley says “human penguins” were on the stage and in the streets of Wellington this Labour Weekend. They showcased how artists and performers could respond to environmental and social issues – in this case, the serious threat of global warming on

the existence of Antarctica’s penguin populations. Elspeth’s new play, The Penguins, is being performed in 14 locations worldwide from Paris to Shanghai and the United States, and featured at Massey’s Wellington campus on Labour Day. It is one of nine short plays on climate change featured at this year’s Still Waving: Climate Change Theatre Action event – part of a six-week global movement to highlight climate change issues through performance.

In a thematic prelude, human “penguins” took to the streets of central Wellington in the “Becoming Penguin” performance walk, starting at the Cenotaph at Parliament at 1pm and heading to Massey University. Participants were invited to join the walk wearing whatever black and white items they had in their wardrobe that lent a penguin “look”. Creator of “Becoming Penguin” Catherine Bagnall, a Massey School of Design lecturer, is an artist whose work focuses on the edges of fashion

studies and its intersection with performance practices. “In the context of questions about humanity’s relationship to the planetary ecosystem and how we categorise ‘other’ species, ‘Becoming Penguin’ explores ideas about the end of the Anthropocene and the beginning of the post-human world,” Catherine says. The walk, she says, was to “symbolise support for all the communities taking personal responsibility for climate action at a local level, when governments won’t.”

Anu keen to put best foot forward on tour By Jamie Adams

A Lyall Bay dancer is looking forward to returning to the road to show the country the fine art of contemporary dance. Anu Khaping is a member of the five-strong Footnote New Zealand Dance troupe, which this week begins a nationwide tour of its double-bill CONTRAST. Anu will be performing in both dances. Super Ornate Construct, by Sarah Foster-Sproull, explores the idea of deconstructing a man alone through the eyes of a woman. The second, Emma Murray’s Participation, is an improvised work which invites the audience to consider experience in relation to others and the spaces we inhabit. While Super Ornate Construct has recorded narration to allow the audience to understand the story, Participation is open to interpretation. “They are both very different in

style,” Anu says. “Super Ornate has dialogue which makes it clear for people while the one isn’t about a story but how the group can evolve together and find tempo with rhythm.” As a professional dancer, Anu trains the same hours as any conventional worker – 9am-5pm Monday to Friday – with up to three hours a session on each piece. She and the other dancers have been rehearsing for four months. Anu, 24, was born in Nepal and moved to New Zealand when she was young. She kick-started her contemporary dance career with Hagley Dance Company in 2013, before continuing her training at Unitec after considering a career in nursing. “Maybe I’ll do that in the future, but I love what I’m doing right now,” she says. She feels blessed to have made it in the dance world, given how competitive auditions are, even with a performing arts degree.

The Drug and Alcohol Practitioner’s Association of Aotearoa New Zealand (dapaanz) says recent attention focused on sexual abuse via the #metoo hashtag highlights the plight of a disproportionately high number of people living with addiction. Dapaanz executive director Sue Paton says people with addiction have been particularly impacted by sexual abuse and other childhood trauma. “The significance of sexual abuse in the lives of people with addiction is a story that really needs to be heard,” she says.

International schizophrenia and psychosis expert Professor Peter Haddad will share his expertise at a special lecture in Wellington next week. He is a consultant at the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, and an honorary clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Manchester. “Prof Haddad is highly regarded for his work on mental health issues such as schizophrenia and psychosis,” says mental health, addictions and intellectual disability service general manager Nigel Fairley. The fellowship is named for mental health client Chad Buckle, who took his own life in 2003. The public lecture is at Victoria University’s Rutherford House, Bunny St, on Thursday, October 26. Admission is free.

inbrief news Mission to launch Christmas appeal The Wellington City Mission will launch its Christmas Star Appeal on Monday. Last Christmas the mission was able to feed around 3000 people through Christmas food parcels, provide children with over 9300 gifts to enjoy on Christmas Day, and support 31 other local social service agencies with food and goods. This year the mission asks people across Greater Wellington to “be someone’s star” by getting involved in its Christmas Walk of Fame which will be displayed on Wellington’s waterfront in December, and the Star Car Christmas Raffle where people can win prizes include a Mitsubishi Mirage. Deputy mayor Jill Day will lay a promotional star on the pavement at Monday’s event on the Wellington waterfront near Te Papa at 10am.

Health commitment welcomed The Public Health Association of New Zealand (PHA) welcomes the new government’s commitment to health as a priority for increased investment. “DHBs, primary care practitioners and the NGO sector urgently need relief from the financial pressures that are demoralising staff, increasing treatment errors and prolonging staff shortages,” says PHA CEO Warren Lindberg. “We are especially pleased that the new government will prioritise determinants of health, such as poverty, housing, water quality and environmental damage from climate change. “New Zealand is internationally recognised for leadership in quality professional care, but also for its failure to ensure access to services for people who are poor, culturally and linguistically different, or otherwise disadvantaged.”

Proposed eastern cycleway options released Wellington City Council has now listed the preferred design options for cycle routes in the eastern suburbs and prioritised which of these will go forward for formal consultation next month. During September, over 400 Wellingtonians attended open days and over 580 people provided 918 pieces of feedback on design options for over 20 streets in the eastern suburbs. Most of these options were identified by the eastern community working groups earlier this year and the feedback has helped council narrow down the design options to a single proposed design for each street and prioritise when these could be built. Council’s portfolio leader for Public Transport, Walking and Cycling Sarah Free says people will be able to see how the cycling network is shaping up. “The proposed two-way bike path on the seaward side of Evans Bay Parade from Carlton Gore Road to north of Greta Point will create a high-quality link between the city, Miramar and Kilbirnie, and will also join up with the proposed two-way bike path through Miramar cutting which we consulted on in September,” she says.

“The Kilbirnie routes will provide an important east-west connection through to Newtown. “The type of bike lane must be appropriate for the type of street. So what we are proposing does vary, depending on the volume and speed of traffic. “We also have to ensure that all of the bike-lane designs will work together between streets to create connected biking

corridors.” On busy roads, protected kerbside bike lanes (between the kerb and parked cars) would include raised buffer zones to allow people to park against and step out onto from their vehicles. On quieter streets the solutions are painted lanes or sharrow road markings in areas where bikes and cars can more easily share the road. “In some streets retaining the

current amount of parking isn’t always going to be possible,” Sarah says. “However we are looking at ways to mitigate parking loss where we can in the detailed design process”. The only streets in the fourweek consultation from November 13 are those which could be built by mid-2019 to secure the Urban Cycleways Programme funding currently on offer.

I’m quite happy that permanent bags, especially cloth ones, should be encouraged as an option; but it’s annoying that we should be forbidden the other option of plastic ones

that are so useful at home and elsewhere. It was annoying when NZ Post suddenly ceased to issue carrier bags of any sort; but that SOE appears to be deliberately running itself down to eventual liquidation, by the method of constantly raising its charges and reducing its services, to scare customers away! Those three organisations have never asked for customers’ opinions, but have just imposed PC ideas on us. Well, I’ll probably have carked before the supermarkets do

what they say they will do; but I’m sure I’m not alone in being somebody who finds those plastic bags an agreeable option. As for saving the planet by human effort, you can’t win! Companionship key to wellbeing Kilmarnock Heights Home resident Dorothy Johnson didn’t expect to make new friends quickly when she moved to the Berhampore rest home, but she’s been pleasantly surprised. “When I first moved in, I didn’t feel much like coming out of my room to socialise,” says the 95-year-old who moved to Kilmarnock Heights five years ago. “But then Jean [Lawson, a fellow resident] started inviting me over for lunch.” The invitation brought Dorothy out of her shell and the pair, both in their nineties, have been friends ever since. They’re spotted together regularly around the home, often holding hands and laughing together. Jean, a former nurse, says reaching out to Dorothy wasn’t hard, as helping others to settle in at the home makes her feel valued and useful. “I’ve always loved people and I think

it’s my way of helping others and making a difference.” Recreation officer Annelize Steyn says companionship is an important part of the Enliven philosophy which Kilmarnock Heights Home follows. Residents are supported to get to know one another, take part in social activities and maintain community connections. “Companionship has the power to alleviate loneliness and isolation and is vital to the wellbeing of elders,” says Annelize. “Here, residents can have companionship whenever they want it and on their own terms. Parish spring gala back for 2017 Seatoun locals are encouraged to get on down to a spring celebration this weekend. The Peninsula Parish, made up of both St Aidan’s and St George’s churches, is holding its annual gala this Saturday. As in previous years, there will be face painting, cupcake decorating, bouncy castles, a Christmas stall, baking and white elephant (second hand goods for sale donated by residents). There will also be Ethiopian food on offer, along with a barbecue boasting the usual sausages and meat patties. If the weather is bad then afternoon tea will be provided inside. The Kilbirnie Fire Station would be on hand to give children the opportunity to take a close look at a fire engine. “The station officer from Kilbirnie is bringing his crew and the fire appliance. They will also carry out a fire safety presentation,” convenor Beverley Alexander says. “The kids just love it.” Priest-in-Charge Tim McKenzie says they tried to keep activities nice and affordable for the community. “It’s not about money it’s about showing everyone a good time,” he says. “It is kind of like a little window into another way of being – it’s like Downton Abbey. We are not trying to make top dollar, we are trying to show the community a little fun.” Beverley said the annual gala was used as a fundraiser for the parish. “The funds are for the parish and

Donors dip into pockets for rescue chopper charity event

The red carpet was rolled out outside the Air Rescue Centre in Rongotai last Thursday for the inaugural Life Flight Trust Gala. The black-tie dinner and charity auction was presented in an aircraft hangar by longtime Life Flight supporters Hiremaster to showcase the support of several businesses and individuals who gathered to raise funds for the life-saving organisation. Drummers from Narukami Taiko kicked off proceedings as guests arrived, with ambulance staff selling charity balloons to them as they mingled. While guests were expected to get a glimpse of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter at the event, an emergency callout to Kapiti meant it was absent for most of the evening. MC Mark Sainsbury told the audience that some people would not be here today if it wasn’t for Life Flight Trust’s services. “We are all happy to be here to help out.” Life Flight chief executive Ian Pirie praised Hiremaster for putting on an unprecedented celebratory event, along with dedicated sponsor Westpac and staff

who did an exceptional job. The sales of balloons and auction items, including a flight in the iconic chopper to deliver the match ball at a Phoenix game, raised more than $70,000. The biggest-selling item was a gold leaf-encrusted painting of Pencarrow Head called Noble Flight by Shelly Bay artist Juliet Best, which sold for $7000. The night also featured stories from past patients, such as Dan Comeskey, who was rescued by the helicopter team after falling off his roof in Whitby while putting up Christmas lights. Clive Button, the son of Life Flight founder Peter Button, also spoke on stage, along with Hiremaster’s founder Colin Taylor, who was friends with Peter and was a supporter of his vision from day one. There was also an appearance by 15-yearold singer Tiana So’oialao who performed versions of Adele’s Make You Feel My Love and Etta James’ At Last. Her singing was so good that Mark suggested her famous rugby-playing father Rodney would from now on be known as “Tiana’s dad”.

New rules on all US-bound flights are set to come into effect, including stricter passenger screening to comply with government security measures. The move is designed to avoid expanding an in-cabin ban on laptops. Airlines say the new measures, which could include short security interviews with passengers, would be in place by Thursday. They will affect 325,000 airline passengers on about 2000 commercial flights arriving daily in the US, on 180 airlines from 280 airports in 105 countries, and industry trade group Airlines for America has said the changes might cause disruptions. The US announced the new rules in June to end the government's restrictions on carry-on electronic devices on planes coming from 10 airports in eight countries in the Middle East and North Africa in response to unspecified security threats. Those restrictions were lifted in July but the Trump administration said it could re-impose measures on a case by case basis if airlines and airports did not boost security.

Memorial match brings out Island Bay’s Italians By Jamie Adams

Island Bay’s Italian footballers are gearing up this weekend for a tradition that mixes camaraderie with commemoration. The Aldo Cuccurullo Memorial Trophy is annual match contested between Club Italia in Nelson and Wellington’s Club Garibaldi, believed to be the oldest Italian club in the Southern Hemisphere. The origins of the tradition lie in August 1995 when a player by the name of Francis Miccio noticed that Club Garibaldi had a team in the Sunday social league. After speaking to Nelsonian Paul Romano, who at the time was playing for Garibaldi while studying in Wellington, Francis suggested a team cross the Cook Strait later in the year to play a Nelson team in an “all-Italian” match. Weeks prior to this event at a Club Italia committee meeting in Nelson, it was suggested the match be held in memory of player Aldo Cuccurrello who had died of a heart attack at the age of just 22 the previous year. A trophy was inaugurated in his name and the clubs have played at alternate venues in October or November every year since, bar one - the 2011 event was cancelled due to the Rugby World Cup. “This year’s game will be the

22nd,” Paolo says. “We have a 10-6 winning record, with five draws.” Paolo is one player whose Italian roots are closer than others in the club. He was born in Florence and settled in New Zealand as an adult after stints living in the UK and Netherlands. “When I came to New Zealand I joined the Seatoun club then when I was playing in the Capital Football league I got to know a few people and they mentioned

Club Garibaldi to me,” he says. “So I joined Island Bay where I discovered lots of second-generation Kiwis of Italian heritage.” Club Garibaldi president Linda De Gregorio says the reason the tradition has lasted for more than two decades is, from what players tell her, that they always have fun. “This weekend is once again a great opportunity to strengthen the good friendships between both clubs, honour Aldo Cuccurullo – and of course, have fun.”

Embracing that losing feeling A loss at the right time can always be a positive and that will be the case for the All Blacks after Saturday’s 23-18 defeat to the stubborn Wallabies in Brisbane. The loss will inject the Aussies with a bit of self belief which is good for the hurting global game but the men in black shouldn’t be too disheartened. The All Blacks were missing a number of frontline players and with more than 50 players set to wear the silver fern in 2017, the reality is that there have been plenty of injuries and personal reasons to keep the coaching staff and selectors busy. The All Blacks lost a deadrubber game while blooding new players. So, what did we learn? Beauden Barrett is the best No. 10 in the country while Ben Smith is easily the best fullback. The forwards miss the physicality and work rate of Brodie Retallick in the tight stuff. The end-of-year Northern Hemisphere tour will be fascinating. The prospect of seeing dy-

namic 20-year-old hooker Asafo Aumua in action while Jack Goodhue has a great chance at nailing down a long-term midfield spot. There is still a need to find a third halfback and a third No. 10 but blooding more than 50 players this year proves the All Blacks have depth which is the envy of the world considering their strong winning record this year. The other interesting factor will be to see how the defence goes with coaching guru Wayne Smith having stepped away after the loss on Saturday. Rest assured though, this is the All Blacks - success is a key aspect of the brand and it’s woven into the fabric of the iconic jersey. Winning is a habit and for this team it is the expectation each time they play. The facts are they can’t win all the games and some games are more important than others. Let’s learn from it and build to win the games that matter over the next two years.
