Cook Strait News sat in on a question and answer session between Island Bay local Ian Hamlin and a class of nine and ten year olds. He was quizzed about everything from why he chooses to create big paintings and where he gets his inspiration from to the studio he works in and how much he sells his paintings for. Ian shared a few tips with the students so they could become better little artists, including for them to hold their brushes lightly. Before long Ian had sent the class outside to get inspiration for their own paintings which he helped them work on. Ian says he enjoyed spending time at Roseneath School. “It’s always cool to share what you know,” he says. “Kids are great and it’s a great time to inspire them to get into art.” Parent Tess Ostapowicz or-

Fun to be had at Jamboree By Amanda Carrington

A Girl Guiding jamboree is a fun, exciting and great way to meet new people, according to two Island Bay Girl Guides. Lucia Rutene, 10, and Sophia Barclay, 11, are set to attend the nationwide camp based in Christchurch in January along with around 2500 girls from throughout the world. Jamboree is a week-long camp held every four years that inspires nine to 13-year-olds to get involved in a range of indoor and outdoor activities. Lucia is looking forward to the fun experience of jamboree and staying in a big camp. “You get to go away on holiday and stay in a camp and get to do things you don’t do in everyday life,” she says. Lucia likes to be occupied and is very familiar with Christchurch. Sophia is excited to socialise with other girls and is looking forward to doing a wide range of activities. “I think there will be lots of fun activities and it will be really good to meet girls from other districts in New Zealand,” she says. During the jamboree, every

Girl Guide will be sleeping in tents which Sophia says will be hard to find your way back to in the dark. Also attending jamboree are leaders from across the country. Island Bay Guide Leader Michaela Coleman says it will be her first jamboree and a fun experience for girls to meet other girls from New Zealand and around the world. “It’s jam packed on activities and provides them with new challenges of team work and it’s lots of fun,” she says. Michaela has been a leader for four years and has been working with the Island Bay district to fundraise for jamboree. The district is selling tickets to Little Women, the play based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott being put on by Repertory Theatre. The money raised by fundraising will go towards helping the six girls from Island Bay get to jamboree. inbrief news Going wild Buster the yellow-eyed penguin is ready to bust back into the wild after being nursed back to full health at The Nest Te Kohanga, Wellington Zoo. The endangered bird was brought to The Nest after suffering a bite to the foot, which caused severe bone and tissue damage leaving him with a limp and unable to walk. After a strong course of antibiotics and a toe amputation, Buster started to recover. He was swimming in a salt-water pool within a number of weeks. He will be returned to a beach near Penguin Place, a rehabilitation facility on the Otago Peninsula. His progress will be monitored before deciding on where he will be released to in the wild.

New youth group

A new group for youngsters between the ages of 10 and 13 has been launched at Island Bay Presbyterian Church. At their first meeting last week they made snacks, played cards and hung out at Shorland Park. The group will meet fortnightly on Tuesdays after school.

the studio in 2006 after they met during their study towards a Visual Arts Diploma at Whitireia. When Vaune and Annie are at Workspace Studios, they run workshops for jewellery making. This weekend they will be doing jewellery design demonstrations, metal casting, role printing, metal forming and patterning. “It’s quite a long, complicated process making jewellery so it’s not ideal. But they [the public]

are welcome to come in and check out what we do,” Vaune says. Workspace studios provide space to the community by renting benches to other artists, jewellers and students during the day. Vaune says by providing space to the community, everyone has been supportive of what they do. “The jewellery community is quite small and the community feed into each other. There’s something for everyone,” she

She describes the building from the inside like a “Tardis”a building or container that is larger inside than it appears to be from outside. As a child Sharon Johnstone says she would design and make outfits for all of her dolls. Next month Sharon, a Newtown resident, will watch from the audience as one of her creations hits the stage for Wellington’s annual World Of WearableArt show. Despite having a background in fashion and design, she says she was surprised to discover her WOW entry had made it into the show. “I seriously didn’t think I would get in,” says Sharon, who began making the outfit for last year’s show until she decided to wait a year so she could make it better. “I am very excited. We did a photo shoot and I saw it (the outfit) all together and I was very proud and overwhelmed.” Since the age of eight Sharon says she has wanted to work in the design and fashion industries. At the age of 18 she moved to Wellington and began studying at Wellington Polytechnic, now Massey University. After a stint working for a company doing computer aided design she accepted a job with

the Bowerman School of Design in Newtown and has been their more or less ever since. Sharon started-off teaching fashion but says these days she teaches job skills to job seekers at the Bowerman School. While Sharon is not allowed to reveal many details about her design she is prepared to give

away one clue. She says the entire outfit is made from second hand bicycle tyre tubes that were given to her free of charge by Burkes Cycles. Asked how many hours she has put into making her creation, Sharon says she has lost count but had very sore fingers

It started as a joke but before she knew it, Sister Cecilia, celebrating her 80th birthday, was flying down The Parade in Island Bay on the back of her neighbour’s Harley Davidson motorbike. “Oh it was lovely! I was nervous before I got on, but once we got going it was great,” Sr Cecilia says. A Sister of Compassion, Sr Cecilia celebrated her birthday on Saturday with a party at her Island Bay house, where around 40 friends and family had gathered. While everyone was gathered for the celebrations, the true highlight of the day came when Sr Cecilia was kitted out all in leather and climbed onto the back of the mo-

torbike. “Everyone was really excited about it,” she says. “We went for a ride around Island Bay and up Derwent Street.” “I’m not sure exactly how fast we were going, but I thought we were going pretty fast!” She and several other Sisters moved onto The Parade more than two years ago, while work is being done on Home of Compassion to build new accommodation units. Sr Cecilia’s neighbour Tony Maresca says he warmed to the “three beautiful nuns” straight away. “They moved in next door to us a couple of years ago and we became good friends and good neighbours. “They are really lovely people,”

he says. Tony says he joked with Sr Cecilia when she first moved in, saying she should come for a ride on his Harley Davidson. “I said to her, ‘when you get to 80 I’m going to take you on the motorbike’, and she said ‘Yeah alright!’” When the day finally came, Tony says he thought she was going to back out, but she was all for it. He says he gave her some instruction, saying if she held on tight it would be “good as gold!” “I’m really pleased she did it because it really made her day.” “The best part was when I brought her back everybody was clapping and cheering, and there was the most beautiful look on her face.”

A love affair with Italian gelato while on holiday inspired Nathan Meyer to bring the sweet sensation to the streets of Wellington. Several years later and the Newtown resident is being nationally recognised for his tasty treats. Carello Del Gelato is one of the ten artisan producers from the Wellington region to make the finals of Visa Wellington On a Plate’s MiNDFOOD Producer Awards for established small businesses. Festival Director Sarah Miekle says the award is a way to highlight Wellington’s best and greatest small businesses. “Carello Del Gelato is a fantastic business and is constantly innovating their product,” she says. “And of course they have amazing ice cream sandwiches.” Nathan started Carello Del Gelato when he returned from a holiday in Italy. He based himself in Newtown and began gathering the best local and Italian ingredients to concoct his creations. Nathan sold the handmade gelato from a ‘carello’ or cart on the street and at festivals. More than ten years on, the brand is now distributed by stockists throughout New Zealand and adorns the menu of Wellington restaurants such as Logan Brown, Grill Meats Beer and Flying Burrito Brothers. Nathan says he is excited to be a finalist, and to be a part of Wellington On a Plate. “It’s a great event that we love to be involved in. It’s shouting out about Wellington and all the

It is cool to come up with new and exciting ideas.” This is the third year the brand has been a finalist for the producer awards, but Nathan says this year their flavor ideas are bigger and better than ever. “They are one-off flavours and we are keen to share them. They are unusual.” He says the brand’s success is due to the gelato’s point of difference. “We make everything from scratch and have a focus on local ingredients, most other brands are imports or packet mixes.” “We see ourselves as the market leader in that sense.”

Going electric on two wheels Wellingtonians can now take to an electric bike for a tour of the city following the launch of Switched on Bikes last week. Switched on Bikes is a result of the Smart Energy Challenge, a Wellington City Council initiative to support clean energy ideas in the city. Located at the Sustainability Trust on Tory Street, Switched on Bikes was started by Ryan O’Connell and Sofia Robinson. Ryan says the pair took to crowd funding website PledgeMe to finance the new business venture. The first tour was held last weekend and took in the Miramar Peninsula, the Leonie Gill Pathway and Mount Victoria. Electric bikes are also available for hire, Ryan says. BEFORE Mark Waters, from Upholstery Craftsman in Newtown, says he has had an interest in upholstery since he was nine-years-old. Mark says he was a young fella, growing up in Dunedin, when his father asked him to give him a hand with some chairs. The father and son took eight of the family’s bright red and bright orange chairs to be reupholstered – it was the 1970s. A week later they returned to pick them up. “I looked at my father and said ‘that’ what I want to do’.” Mark says when he was 14 he approached a potential employer who told him to come back at the end of the year and he might have a vacancy. At the end of the year Mark asked his woodwork teacher to purchase a bottle of Chardon. He went back to the

upholsterer and put the bottle on his table. Soon enough Mark was working in the industry that he continues to work in to this day. “I really enjoy the people,” he says. “The best part is watching their faces for their reaction when they pick up their items.” After working in Dunedin and then Petone, Mark went to Australia for a year when he met a man whose father owned the Newtown business. After borrowing money from his own Dad, Mark started what is now known as Upholstery Craftsman with $8,000 and a van. Somebody said he would last just three months – that was in 1988. Upholstery Craftsman is located on Constable Street in Newtown. The company’s letterbox is a well-known

red leather chair that passers-by often sit their kids on. Mark says the chair has been in the workshop of late for a spruce-up, but will soon be returning to its usual place out the front. PBA

Cycleway will help not so confident cyclists Dear Ed, after going to a public meeting or two, reading some documents a year or two ago (does seem like ages) and talking to people I made a submission re the cycleway starting at Island Bay. My submission was mostly in favour with a few queries about some bus stops, etc. The cycleway is a start

Cities where lots of people walk and cycle are attractive cities Dear Ed, I have cycled in Wellington and the Hutt Valley for 35 years and have lamented the lack of safe cycling infrastructure. Most people choose not to cycle because it feels too dangerous. It is fantastic that Wellington City councillors have voted to proceed with the Island Bay Cycleway, the start of

a network of protected cycleways in Wellington. I have also spent time cycling in The Netherlands, and renewed that experience in June. The contrast is stark. There, everyone seems to cycle. In cities of similar size to Wellington you see children of all ages cycling to school, to the pool, a whole classroom out with

a teacher or two; parents with one or two small kids on bike seats; grandparents cycling beside their grandchildren; people of all ages just going about their business, on a bike. It feels natural to just hop on a bike to go anywhere! All this is possible mainly because in the 1970s the Dutch decided to turn away from the car-centric policies that in

the post-war boom were killing its cities and its citizens, and to embrace more inclusive transport policies - leading them to invest in safe cycling infrastructure. Worried about being euthanised in her fifties Dear Ed, Peter Bellam (CSN, July 30) it is great to see that you have been so gullible having been sucked into this propaganda about how fat people are getting, how car dominated New Zealand is and how scary it is to step out your front door. I think you’ll find that the world is just not that black and white – people don’t just drive cars because they are anti-walking and anti-cycling!

Just go ask a few mothers around how easy it is to make sure the kids get to school as well as get themselves to work on time, to get the food shopping for the week, get everyone to their sports events etc. Also take a minute to ask a variety of elderly people what impact older age has on their mobility! I also suggest that you travel the world and then you will see that little old New Zealand is not that

are being ageist – don’t forget that older people were once children, more than likely rode bikes, and probably were parents of small children and may even now be grandparents – so it is unwise to assume that they don’t know the issues for all! Waiting list for council housing Dear Ed, I have been confirmed on the Wellington City Council rental housing waiting list since March. But I have not heard from them since then and now they have eliminated my application without ever contacting me. My current rental is due to increase again – I can no longer afford to stay here so my affordable housing need is becoming urgent. As a 62 year old beneficiary I am not entitled to any WINZ accommodation allowance and I live on a fixed budget - so I require the Affordable Subsidy Rental in a smoke-free environment due to my health condition and being allergic to passive smoke. I have previously been on the WCC housing waiting lists for many years, but they could never provide me with any suitable rental accommodation.

Now that WCC has spent millions of taxpayer dollars on improving its city rental housing stock - surely WCC can now provide me with quality smoke-free Affordable Subsidy Rental at $154 per week for a few years until I get my pension? There is a clear difference between WCC housing - in providing workers with market rental accommodation and older beneficiary citizen’s needing affordable rental. WCC housing exclaims great Affordable Subsidy Rental, but in reality WCC housing does not fulfil any of its social housing obligations. Maybe t he me d ia should investigate WCC tenancy occupations? LETTERS to the editor Cyclists cause of their own accidents Dear Ed, I completely disagree with Andrew Stone’s claim (CSN, July 30) claiming that Council have not neglected basic infrastructure. You need only consider the recent flooding in Kilbirnie (twice affected) the delays in the seriously overdue upgrade of the Petone to Thorndon cycleway, the Island Bay Seawall to name just several of the more obvious examples of a failed maintenance programme courtesy of the Council. It would seem Stone is a member of the cycling lobby – a group who’s fervent supporters seem to be unable to listen to or compromise with

anyone who disagrees with their point of view. They are anti-community spirited. There’s a lot of misinformation about car and cycle caused accidents that the Council needs to take full responsibility for. Many cyclists actually are the cause of their own accidents and no vehicle has been involved. Check out the facts! Zoe brings home gold By Sam Duff

She may only be 11 but a Brooklyn-trained karate kid recently won gold at the Karate New Zealand Nationals in Porirua. Zoe Ashton-Lawes, from Wadestown Primary School, says she was ecstatic to bring home gold in the kata category. “I was pretty excited,” she says. “I told all my friends, they were very excited for me.”

Zoe says she was proud of how well she had done as she did not expect to do so well. “It was quite a surprise,” says Zoe, who is not taking anything for chance for next year’s Karate New Zealand Nationals. This was the second year in a row Zoe attended the competition, in 2014 she picked-up a bronze for kata. Zoe trains at Brooklyn Rembuden under sensei Patricia Reilly. In December last year Zoe went to the Manawatu Championships where about 120 competitors went head to head. Zoe took out a first in her kata round and went on to pick-up a gold medal in the kumite, fighting.

Also in December she took part in the Kyoso Cup in Wainuiomata where she was in the 9 to 11 year old category and came second in kata and third in kumite. Asked what she enjoys about karate, Zoe says it is fun and she likes making friends when she goes to competitions. Guard fundraiser A car is being auctioned to keep life guards, such as those at Lyall Bay and Oriental Bay, can stay on patrol. Surf Life Saving New Zealand is auctioning a brand new vehicle, donated by Thrifty Car Rental, valued at more than $80,000.

State Insurance is also offering one year’s free car insurance to the winner of the auction and BP is providing a gift card valued at $260. The auction closes on August 12 at 8pm and can be found by going to trade.me/Thrifty.

Lanes open The opening of a cycle lane on Victoria Street brings Wellington one step closer to the completion of its planned $90 million cycle network. The new cycle lane is part of a Wellington City Council transformation of Victoria Street. Beginning in Dixon Street, the

cycleway, which includes a short kerbside section, connects with the shared cycle and walking path in Karo Drive and through Pukeahu National War Memorial Park. Wellington Mayor Celia WadeBrown says the Council is committed to improving cycling infrastructure.

Bocce success in Los Angeles A pair of Miramar bocce players has picked-up several medals at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. Player Trevor Hetherington and unified partner Ann Lilley will be returning to the country having been part of the bronze-winning New Zealand bocce team. The team of four is made up of Trevor, Ann and two

players from the Manawatu. Ann and Trevor, who both play bocce at the Mornington Golf Club, did not pick-up medals in the pair’s competition, however the Manawatu players won silver. Trevor won a bronze in the men’s single event. Bocce head coach Lyn Ryan says Trevor ‘played out of his skin’. New Zealand sent 36 athletes

to the games, four of which are competing in bocce. The other two bocce players are from the Manawatu. The Special Olympics were founded in 1968 and first held at Soldier Field in Chicago where 1500 athletes competed. This year more than 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches from 177 countries competed in Los Angeles.

Marist St Pats were defeated by Old Boys University in the final of the Jubilee Cup at Porirua Park on Saturday. After 80 minutes on the field and a strong comeback from the local side the final score was 30-27. The real action of the game when

there was just 20 minutes to go and a try by OBU put the score at 25-6. Despite the wet conditions MSP fought their way back in the final quarter for a respectable loss. The two sides have not met in a Jubilee Cup final since 2002 when MSP triumphed over OBU.

Capturing everyday life at Kilmarnock Heights Home Don’t be surprised if you see the residents of Enliven’s Kilmarnock Heights Home adorning the pages of the newspaper or perhaps even a glossy magazine. Professional photographer Mike Heydon, from Jet Productions, was in Berhampore to take photos of residents, staff and volunteers at the rest home recently. “I think everyone had a great time – even those who were a little camera shy at first,” says External Relations Manager Alisha Kennedy. The photos will be used in brochures, flyers, advertisements and websites for Enliven, including Kilmarnock Heights Home. “It’s important to Enliven that we capture real moments, with real people who really love living at Kilmarnock Heights,” says Alisha. “We asked the residents in advance if they wanted to be involved and many of them jumped at the opportunity – it’s something a little bit different and a little bit spontaneous, plus they really wanted to help out.” On the day of the photo shoot the residents, staff and volunteers carried on with their usual activities and routines while the photographer snapped away. “We want the advertising to reflect everyday life at Kilmarnock Heights Home, so everyone is encouraged to carry on with their day while the photographer captures it.”

She explains that getting residents involved in the photo shoot fits nicely with Enliven’s philosophy of care, called the Eden Alternative. The Eden principles touch on ideas such as variety and spontaneity, companionship, continuing hobbies and meaningful activity. “The key thing about Eden is that it’s elder-directed, and is all about ensuring older people have companionship and meaning in their lives.” Enliven's Kilmarnock Heights Home, located at 20 Morton Street in Berhampore, provides rest home and respite care, as well as a popular day guest programme. Dispelling healthy relationship myths By Sam Duff

A lot of teenagers regret the first time they have sex. True or false? That will be just one of the talking points when an early intervention life skills programme kicks-off at a local college this month. Your Choice Wellington coordinator Andrea Wheatley says Your Choice is a nation-wide education programme that gives young people the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their sexual activities and relationships. “Young people need to understand the full value of themselves and their bodies,” Andrea says. “We want them to have healthy relationships and a lot of people don’t know how to have healthy relationships.” Presenters aged between 18 and 25 go into classrooms and take the sessions, which Andrea says are not sex education classes. Your Choice presenter and Newtown youth

worker, Chris Silvester, says there is quite a gap in young people’s education about healthy relationships. “The primary place young people learn about healthy relationships is through their parents and a lot of kids come from broken families or don’t have an open dialogue with their parents or mentors.” One of the discussions will focus around cultural and media pressure when it comes to what relationships should be like, Chris says. Your Choice, which is run by the Family Education Network, is set to be held in a Wellington high school for the first time in seven years. “Everybody in New Zealand needs to hear the content that we have,” Andrea says She says her goal is to visit another four schools in the next year with the Your Choice programme, Andrea says Your Choice Wellington will be holding a quiz night fundraiser on August 21.
