Everything from Hunting Safety Gear to Mismatched Shoes With over 180 companies involved this year the Expo has it all from beauty and fashion to hunting gear and even mismatched shoes. If you are a hunter or your Husband, Son, or friends are hunters come and visit Hunter Safety Lab at the Expo and learn about the IRIS Hunter Protection System. In NZ most hunting accidents are caused by experienced, responsible hunters and two out of three victims are shot by the person they’re hunting with. The IRIS Hunter Protection System is a 100% impartial tool that warns a hunter when they mistakenly target anyone wearing IRIS detectable gear. It doesn’t replace the rules of safe hunting or your personal responsibility but is an additional tool for when the existing measures have failed. The human mind is not infallible, so use the tools available to maximise safety, and protect the ones you love. Smart hunters use IRIS because they know people make mistakes. Another new exhibitor to the expo is Mismatched who will travel up from Southland to feature in the Expo Fashion Zone. Owner Suzan

Campbell began her shoe journey when she found these amazing shoes overseas on a family holiday, and it was love at first sight. Suzan says “I knew straight away that they had to come to NZ. They were just so unique and visually striking that when I wore them complete strangers would stop me in the street. I had people coming up to me asking where I got my shoes so oft en that my husband began to just walk away and roll his eyes. Fast forward to now and with the help of family and friends I have set up Mismatched and have made hundreds of NZ woman happy with these unique shoes we love to sell.” Visit the Mismatched site at the Expo for some funky new shoes. Art Workshop at Roseneath School continued from page 1 They each took on a classroom of students for a few hours and talked about their love of art, before teaching the youngsters a thing or two about the subject. Cook Strait News sat in on a question and answer session between Island Bay local Ian Hamlin and a class of nine and ten year olds. He was quizzed about everything from why he chooses to create big paintings and where he gets his inspiration from to the studio he works in and how much he sells his paintings for. Ian shared a few tips with the students so they could become better little artists, including for them to hold their brushes lightly. Before long Ian had sent the class outside to get inspiration for their own paintings which he helped them work on. Ian says he enjoyed spending time at Roseneath School. “It’s always cool to share what you know,” he says. “Kids are great and it’s a great time to inspire them to get into art.” Parent Tess Ostapowicz or-

this is just a different way of them doing it.” Having artists visit from the local Wellington art scene, who regularly paint things such as the harbour and the south coast, captures the students imaginations, Tess says. She says this was the first

Fun to be had at Jamboree By Amanda Carrington

A Girl Guiding jamboree is a fun, exciting and great way to meet new people, according to two Island Bay Girl Guides. Lucia Rutene, 10, and Sophia Barclay, 11, are set to attend the nationwide camp based in Christchurch in January along with around 2500 girls from throughout the world. Jamboree is a week-long camp held every four years that inspires nine to 13-year-olds to get involved in a range of indoor and outdoor activities. Lucia is looking forward to the fun experience of jamboree and staying in a big camp. “You get to go away on holiday and stay in a camp and get to do things you don’t do in everyday life,” she says. Lucia likes to be occupied and is very familiar with Christchurch. Sophia is excited to socialise with other girls and is looking forward to doing a wide range of activities. “I think there will be lots of fun activities and it will be really good to meet girls from other districts in New Zealand,” she says. During the jamboree, every

Girl Guide will be sleeping in tents which Sophia says will be hard to find your way back to in the dark. Also attending jamboree are leaders from across the country. Island Bay Guide Leader Michaela Coleman says it will be her first jamboree and a fun experience for girls to meet other girls from New Zealand and around the world. “It’s jam packed on activities and provides them with new challenges of team work and it’s lots of fun,” she says. Michaela has been a leader for four years and has been working with the Island Bay district to fundraise for jamboree. The district is selling tickets to Little Women, the play based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott being put on by Repertory Theatre. The money raised by fundraising will go towards helping the six girls from Island Bay get to jamboree. If you would like to help these girls get to jamboree you can purchase tickets to a performance of Little Women on Tuesday August 18 at the Gryphon Theatre.  You can register for tickets at islandbayguides.eventbrite. co.nz.

inbrief news Going wild Buster the yellow-eyed penguin is ready to bust back into the wild after being nursed back to full health at The Nest Te Kohanga, Wellington Zoo. The endangered bird was brought to The Nest after suffering a bite to the foot, which caused severe bone and tissue damage leaving him with a limp and unable to walk. After a strong course of antibiotics and a toe amputation, Buster started to recover. He was swimming in a salt-water pool within a number of weeks. He will be returned to a beach near Penguin Place, a rehabilitation facility on the Otago Peninsula. His progress will be monitored before deciding on where he will be released to in the wild.

New youth group

A new group for youngsters between the ages of 10 and 13 has been launched at Island Bay Presbyterian Church. At their first meeting last week they made snacks, played cards and hung out at Shorland Park. The group will meet fortnightly on Tuesdays after school.

Paul Swain, the Regional Council’s Public Transport portfolio leader, says the new bus system will build on the new Wellington City bus network that will be introduced progressively within the next two years. “The new network will give more people access to all day, high frequency bus services, reduce bus congestion through the CBD, making bus travel around and across Wellington simpler and quicker,” he says.

Rapid bus service a step closer Wellingtonians are one step closer to being able to use a Bus Rapid Transit system from one end of the city to the other. Greater Wellington Regional Council, Wellington City Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency have worked together on an initial business case for a BRT system. The BRT system would feature new, high capacity, lowemission vehicles, special lanes separating buses from traffic to some extent and priority for buses at signalled intersections.

Toi Põneke Arts Centre turns 10 By Amanda Carrington

Wellington’s only arts centre is opening its doors this weekend to celebrate its 10th birthday. Toi Põneke is the office for hundreds of the city’s creative artists and businesses including directors, audio producers, writers and dancers. It is also the office for Island Bay residents Vaune Mason and Annie Collins, jewellery designers at Workspace Studios. Vaune and Annie opened

the studio in 2006 after they met during their study towards a Visual Arts Diploma at Whitireia. When Vaune and Annie are at Workspace Studios, they run workshops for jewellery making. This weekend they will be doing jewellery design demonstrations, metal casting, role printing, metal forming and patterning. “It’s quite a long, complicated process making jewellery so it’s not ideal. But they [the public]

are welcome to come in and check out what we do,” Vaune says. Workspace studios provide space to the community by renting benches to other artists, jewellers and students during the day. Vaune says by providing space to the community, everyone has been supportive of what they do. “The jewellery community is quite small and the community feed into each other. There’s something for everyone,” she

says. Toi Põneke manager Paora Allen says more than 300 artists have exhibited at Toi Põneke Gallery. She describes the building from the inside like a “Tardis”a building or container that is larger inside than it appears to be from outside. Toi Põneke holds its open day on August 8 at 61-69 Abel Smith Street from 10am. Workspace studios will be open from 10am to 3pm on Saturday.

Excited to make WOW finals By Sam Duff

As a child Sharon Johnstone says she would design and make outfits for all of her dolls. Next month Sharon, a Newtown resident, will watch from the audience as one of her creations hits the stage for Wellington’s annual World Of WearableArt show. Despite having a background in fashion and design, she says she was surprised to discover her WOW entry had made it into the show. “I seriously didn’t think I would get in,” says Sharon, who began making the outfit for last year’s show until she decided to wait a year so she could make it better. “I am very excited. We did a photo shoot and I saw it (the outfit) all together and I was very proud and overwhelmed.” Since the age of eight Sharon says she has wanted to work in the design and fashion industries. At the age of 18 she moved to Wellington and began studying at Wellington Polytechnic, now Massey University. After a stint working for a company doing computer aided design she accepted a job with

the Bowerman School of Design in Newtown and has been their more or less ever since. Sharon started-off teaching fashion but says these days she teaches job skills to job seekers at the Bowerman School. While Sharon is not allowed to reveal many details about her design she is prepared to give

away one clue. She says the entire outfit is made from second hand bicycle tyre tubes that were given to her free of charge by Burkes Cycles. Asked how many hours she has put into making her creation, Sharon says she has lost count but had very sore fingers

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE: For her 80th birthday an Island Bay nun was given the ride of her life on Saturday.

Island Bay’s own ‘Flying Nun’

By Jack Fletcher

It started as a joke but before she knew it, Sister Cecilia, celebrating her 80th birthday, was flying down The Parade in Island Bay on the back of her neighbour’s Harley Davidson motorbike. “Oh it was lovely! I was nervous before I got on, but once we got going it was great,” Sr Cecilia says. A Sister of Compassion, Sr Cecilia celebrated her birthday on Saturday with a party at her Island Bay house, where around 40 friends and family had gathered. While everyone was gathered for the celebrations, the true highlight of the day came when Sr Cecilia was kitted out all in leather and climbed onto the back of the mo-

torbike. “Everyone was really excited about it,” she says. “We went for a ride around Island Bay and up Derwent Street.” “I’m not sure exactly how fast we were going, but I thought we were going pretty fast!” She and several other Sisters moved onto The Parade more than two years ago, while work is being done on Home of Compassion to build new accommodation units. Sr Cecilia’s neighbour Tony Maresca says he warmed to the “three beautiful nuns” straight away. “They moved in next door to us a couple of years ago and we became good friends and good neighbours. “They are really lovely people,”

he says. Tony says he joked with Sr Cecilia when she first moved in, saying she should come for a ride on his Harley Davidson. “I said to her, ‘when you get to 80 I’m going to take you on the motorbike’, and she said ‘Yeah alright!’” When the day finally came, Tony says he thought she was going to back out, but she was all for it. He says he gave her some instruction, saying if she held on tight it would be “good as gold!” “I’m really pleased she did it because it really made her day.” “The best part was when I brought her back everybody was clapping and cheering, and there was the most beautiful look on her face.”

Transformation A pair of Island Bay residents are busy transforming the old Island Bay fish and chip shop on the corner of The Parade and Tamar Street. Restaurateur Ollie Edwards and fireman and local identity Greg McPhee are sprucing up the old site and

renaming it ‘Salt and Batter.’ They say it will not be your average chippery and descibe the new set-up as “sharp, stylish, fun and fresh.” The partners aim to have ‘Salt and Batter’ open on the first day of spring, September 1.

A scoop of success By Sam Whittle

A love affair with Italian gelato while on holiday inspired Nathan Meyer to bring the sweet sensation to the streets of Wellington. Several years later and the Newtown resident is being nationally recognised for his tasty treats. Carello Del Gelato is one of the ten artisan producers from the Wellington region to make the finals of Visa Wellington On a Plate’s MiNDFOOD Producer Awards for established small businesses. Festival Director Sarah Miekle says the award is a way to highlight Wellington’s best and greatest small businesses. “Carello Del Gelato is a fantastic business and is constantly innovating their product,” she says. “And of course they have amazing ice cream sandwiches.” Nathan started Carello Del Gelato when he returned from a holiday in Italy. He based himself in Newtown and began gathering the best local and Italian ingredients to concoct his creations. Nathan sold the handmade gelato from a ‘carello’ or cart on the street and at festivals. More than ten years on, the brand is now distributed by stockists throughout New Zealand and adorns the menu of Wellington restaurants such as Logan Brown, Grill Meats Beer and Flying Burrito Brothers. Nathan says he is excited to be a finalist, and to be a part of Wellington On a Plate. “It’s a great event that we love to be involved in. It’s shouting out about Wellington and all the

producers. It is cool to come up with new and exciting ideas.” This is the third year the brand has been a finalist for the producer awards, but Nathan says this year their flavor ideas are bigger and better than ever. “They are one-off flavours and we are keen to share them. We are presenting a Tuatara APA

and a Panhead stout and malt at Beervana. They are unusual.” He says the brand’s success is due to the gelato’s point of difference. “We make everything from scratch and have a focus on local ingredients, most other brands are imports or packet mixes.” “We see ourselves as the market leader in that sense.”

Going electric on two wheels Wellingtonians can now take to an electric bike for a tour of the city following the launch of Switched on Bikes last week. Switched on Bikes is a result of the Smart Energy Challenge, a Wellington City Council initiative to support clean energy ideas in the city. Located at the Sustainability Trust on Tory Street, Switched on Bikes was started by Ryan O’Connell and Sofia Robinson. Ryan says the pair took to crowd funding website PledgeMe to finance the new business venture. The first tour was held last weekend and took in the Miramar Peninsula, the Leonie Gill Pathway and Mount Victoria. Electric bikes are also available for hire, Ryan says. Speaking at the Switched on Bikes Launch last week, Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said electric bikes are a good transport option for Wellingtonians.  For more information about Switched on Bikes go to www. switchedonbikes.co.nz or phone 0800 386 877.

Lifelong passion for upholstery If you identify this letterbox and location, cut out and bring Upholstery Craftsman’s ad in for a 10% discount on fabric!

AFTER

BEFORE Mark Waters, from Upholstery Craftsman in Newtown, says he has had an interest in upholstery since he was nine-years-old. Mark says he was a young fella, growing up in Dunedin, when his father asked him to give him a hand with some chairs. The father and son took eight of the family’s bright red and bright orange chairs to be reupholstered – it was the 1970s. A week later they returned to pick them up. “I looked at my father and said ‘that’ what I want to do’.” Mark says when he was 14 he approached a potential employer who told him to come back at the end of the year and he might have a vacancy. At the end of the year Mark asked his woodwork teacher to purchase a bottle of Chardon. He went back to the

upholsterer and put the bottle on his table. Soon enough Mark was working in the industry that he continues to work in to this day. “I really enjoy the people,” he says. “The best part is watching their faces for their reaction when they pick up their items.” After working in Dunedin and then Petone, Mark went to Australia for a year when he met a man whose father owned the Newtown business. After borrowing money from his own Dad, Mark started what is now known as Upholstery Craftsman with $8,000 and a van. Somebody said he would last just three months – that was in 1988. Upholstery Craftsman is located on Constable Street in Newtown. The company’s letterbox is a well-known

red leather chair that passers-by often sit their kids on. Mark says the chair has been in the workshop of late for a spruce-up, but will soon be returning to its usual place out the front. PBA

LETTERS to the editor Get Council priorities straight

Let us all be proud of the country we live in

Dear Ed, I am in total support of Margaret Davis (CSN, July 23) regarding the priority of Council spending. Their primary role is to “ensure” that the basic utilities are maintained first and foremost. You only have to visit Island Bay and look at the seawall that after two years still remains unfixed to wonder just what this Council is up to! That in its self is a disgrace. The on-going flooding in

Dear Ed, I am so surprised to hear Rachel KielTaylor (CSN, July 30) talk so negatively about New Zealand. I find it so funny that many people want to immigrate here for the lifestyle when supposedly Britain, Europe and America seem to be so much ‘greener’ in their approach to living! Having lived overseas for many years I could not wait to bring my family back

Kilbirnie is yet another disgrace. The on-going obsession with cycle lanes is yet another disgrace. I won’t mention the “blue tsunami lines” that’s just too embarrassing. For the Mayor and the Councillors to agree to the latest rates hike shows a complete disrespect for the intelligence of the Wellington ratepayers. Jim Smythe, Vogeltown

Those in glass houses… Gidday guys, I loved your THUMBS DOWN to Dom Harvey for ‘publicly shaming’ some wannabe celeb. A little question, aren’t y’all just as guilty of ‘public shaming’?

Quite curious to hear how you defend your glass house. Otherwise this week’s Cook Strait News is up to your usual standard. Bo

Cycleway will help not so confident cyclists Dear Ed, after going to a public meeting or two, reading some documents a year or two ago (does seem like ages) and talking to people I made a submission re the cycleway starting at Island Bay. My submission was mostly in favour with a few queries about some bus stops, etc. The cycleway is a start

(and has to start somewhere) and it will help the not so confident cyclists like me and all the school kids use their bikes more safely and maybe more often. We can then take our place with other modern cities. I can’t wait. Shirley Hampton, Island Bay

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even if a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to abridge letters or withhold unsuitable letters from publication. Send or fax them to the address on page two, or email them to samduff@wsn.co.nz. Please note that your name and street address must also be provided in e mails.

here to green grass, single dwelling houses with land, wide roads and short drives to get to the coast or the country. Not to mention the temperate weather with clear blue skies! All this whinging about how terrible New Zealand is just getting too much. We should celebrate what we have here in New Zealand – not what we don’t have!

You will never get me going back to high density apartment living, being crammed on public transport, travelling for hours to get to any kind of decent outdoors and grey skies because of general pollution! We have a very special country here – let’s stop imposing other countries living standards/solutions and be proud of the country we live in! Tom Wright, Kelburn

ARRIVALS GATE Reader Tom Wright from Kelburn says after living overseas he could not wait to return to New Zealand.

Cities where lots of people walk and cycle are attractive cities Dear Ed, I have cycled in Wellington and the Hutt Valley for 35 years and have lamented the lack of safe cycling infrastructure. Most people choose not to cycle because it feels too dangerous. It is fantastic that Wellington City councillors have voted to proceed with the Island Bay Cycleway, the start of

a network of protected cycleways in Wellington. I have also spent time cycling in The Netherlands, and renewed that experience in June. The contrast is stark. There, everyone seems to cycle. In cities of similar size to Wellington you see children of all ages cycling to school, to the pool, a whole classroom out with

a teacher or two; parents with one or two small kids on bike seats; grandparents cycling beside their grandchildren; people of all ages just going about their business, on a bike. It feels natural to just hop on a bike to go anywhere! All this is possible mainly because in the 1970s the Dutch decided to turn away from the car-centric policies that in

the post-war boom were killing its cities and its citizens, and to embrace more inclusive transport policies - leading them to invest in safe cycling infrastructure. Cities where lots of people walk and cycle are attractive cities to live in. Let’s make Wellington one of those cities! Andrew Carman, Brooklyn

Worried about being euthanised in her fifties Dear Ed, Peter Bellam (CSN, July 30) it is great to see that you have been so gullible having been sucked into this propaganda about how fat people are getting, how car dominated New Zealand is and how scary it is to step out your front door. I think you’ll find that the world is just not that black and white – people don’t just drive cars because they are anti-walking and anti-cycling!

Just go ask a few mothers around how easy it is to make sure the kids get to school as well as get themselves to work on time, to get the food shopping for the week, get everyone to their sports events etc. Also take a minute to ask a variety of elderly people what impact older age has on their mobility! I also suggest that you travel the world and then you will see that little old New Zealand is not that

car obsessed and remains pretty green and clean in comparison to other parts of the world. In my opinion I think that you are being undemocratic and not community spirited by assuming that because people are not wanting speed bumps in a road that is too narrow to go fast and have grave doubts about the safety of the proposed cycleway are anti-walking and biking. I would also say that you

are being ageist – don’t forget that older people were once children, more than likely rode bikes, and probably were parents of small children and may even now be grandparents – so it is unwise to assume that they don’t know the issues for all! It is people like you, with your ageist attitude, that make me paranoid we will all be euthanised by our fifties! Fiona Gilbert, Newtown

Waiting list for council housing Dear Ed, I have been confirmed on the Wellington City Council rental housing waiting list since March. But I have not heard from them since then and now they have eliminated my application without ever contacting me. My current rental is due to increase again – I can no longer afford to stay here so my affordable housing need is becoming urgent. As a 62 year old beneficiary I am not entitled to any WINZ accommodation allowance and I live on a fixed budget - so I require the Affordable Subsidy Rental in a smoke-free environment due to my health condition and being allergic to passive smoke. I have previously been on the WCC housing waiting lists for many years, but they could never provide me with any suitable rental accommodation.

Now that WCC has spent millions of taxpayer dollars on improving its city rental housing stock - surely WCC can now provide me with quality smoke-free Affordable Subsidy Rental at $154 per week for a few years until I get my pension? There is a clear difference between WCC housing - in providing workers with market rental accommodation and older beneficiary citizen’s needing affordable rental. WCC housing exclaims great Affordable Subsidy Rental, but in reality WCC housing does not fulfil any of its social housing obligations. Maybe t he me d ia should investigate WCC tenancy occupations? Rather than concentrate on the Mayor’s jiggerypokery cycle lanes in Island Bay? Martin Beck, Mornington

DISAGREE: This reader fights back against regular letter writer H Westfold’s thoughts on mothers driving fourwheel drives.

Archaic and sexist comments Dear Ed, finally I have decided to write as yet another bigoted and one eyed letter from H Westfold is again printed in your paper. I’m not sure what’s more annoying, his archaic and sexist comments or the fact you continuously print them. Does nobody else write to you? I think I would prefer to read another local article or even an advertisement. He even made your 5 minute profile? Seriously, was there nobody else? H Westfold - I do not drive an SUV, however I do walk my daughter to school every day. This is due to walking being our only mode of

transport. It’s also so I can go to work happy in the knowledge that she is safely at school. It is 2015. Sadly yes, there are a lot of weirdos out there, busy roads to cross and accidents do happen. It’s every mother’s prerogative how many hours they choose to work. I choose to work 28 hours to provide a nice home, cool clothes and holidays for my daughter and I. This is so I am not reliant on a man or the government. Stop being so quick to judge and consider that everyone has their own reasons and story to tell. Tracey Rigby

LETTERS to the editor Cyclists cause of their own accidents Dear Ed, I completely disagree with Andrew Stone’s claim (CSN, July 30) claiming that Council have not neglected basic infrastructure. You need only consider the recent flooding in Kilbirnie (twice affected) the delays in the seriously overdue upgrade of the Petone to Thorndon cycleway, the Island Bay Seawall to name just several of the more obvious examples of a failed maintenance programme courtesy of the Council. It would seem Stone is a member of the cycling lobby – a group who’s fervent supporters seem to be unable to listen to or compromise with

anyone who disagrees with their point of view. They are anti-community spirited. There’s a lot of misinformation about car and cycle caused accidents that the Council needs to take full responsibility for. Many cyclists actually are the cause of their own accidents and no vehicle has been involved. Check out the facts! But, let’s not confuse the debate with Council infrastructure negligence with the greatly needed public cycleway debate – that just leads to emotional obfuscation! Eleanor Beach, Owhiro Bay

A little premature in judgment Dear Ed, correspondent, H. Scobie (CSN, June 23) may be a little premature in their judgement regarding the recent crash at the Clyde and Mersey St intersection and suggesting Clyde St is unsafe and good

reason for the installation of speed bumps. Two of the three people in the car that smashed into the resident driving up Mersey St, ran off from the scene, as would have the driver if he hadn’t been re-

strained by local residents until the police arrived. The point is that youths joy-riding in stolen vehicles that don’t stop at stop signs are a disaster waiting to happen and no amount of speed control measures is

going to prevent this. This awful incident (which indeed it was) was the result of criminal activity that could have happened anywhere. W & S Hall, Island Bay

I am so sorry ginger bearded man with sunglasses Dear Ed, on Tuesday morning as I was driving to a meeting in Churton Park from Hataitai, coming down from Mt Vic and merging into traffic at about 8.30am, I almost crashed into a cyclist, and it was horrifying. Me, a cyclist myself, not looking enough to see one of my compadres braving it on this beautiful Wellington morning around Oriental Parade, and I almost hit him.

Dear man with ginger beard, sunglasses and bright yellow vest, I am so sorry. I'm usually quite a careful driver, but this morning I didn't catch sight of you until I had freaked both of us out. I am so glad I managed to stop in time, and not cause an accident. I hope you are ok; I am so sorry. I love cycling because it is so much more active

in terms of active versus passive. You’ve gotta have your wits about you and are constantly thinking about the road, cars, people, zooming, the best way to get from a-z. That opening scene from Premium Rush comes to mind, visualising the fastest and easiest way to get through traffic. Driving, however, it’s so easy to be passive. We sit in a bubble, a car-

Tips for staying healthy this winter Get a flu shot – Pay a visit to Androulla and the team today at Kilbirnie Life Pharmacy to get your winter flu shot. An influenza vaccination offers 70 to 90 percent protection against infection and can decrease the severity and side effects if you get sick. Use your own pens – Yucky cold and flu germs can easily be passed from person to person so don’t borrow a work colleagues pen. Who knows where it has been.

Squirt, squirt – Stock up on hand sanitiser and squirt it into your hands from time to time to keep the germs at bay. Stay fit – While it may be easier to sit on the couch and watch Coronation Street this winter you will get a greater long-term benefit from getting off your bum and hitting the gym, going for a walk or doing some exercise in your lounge room. Take a daily multi - Look for one

with 100 percent of the recommended daily values of vitamins A, B6, B12, C, and D, and the minerals chromium, copper, folic acid, selenium, calcium, and zinc. Wash your hands – Seems like a no brainer but according to research many of us still skip washing our hands after a visit to the loo. Yuck, yuck. While many of us may think we are washing our hands we are not doing it thoroughly enough, so get washing! With soap!

Acupuncture comes to Newtown If you have been past Wellington Hospital this year, you may have noticed a new clinic has opened up across the road, the Newtown Acupuncture Centre. Our goal is to provide acupuncture care that is as easy to access and as cost effective as possible. We see our service as a safe complement to our patients’ existing health care, offering relief from symptoms that may not otherwise be possible. Musculoskeletal pain treatment, including neck, back and arthritis pain, is probably the most common use of acupuncture. Studies have shown that acupuncture can offer more relief from symptoms than pain killers or physical therapy alone, particularly in regards to low back and knee arthritis pain. What many don’t realize is that acupuncture can treat other types of pain too, such as visceral pain and headaches. In some cases acupuncture can replace the need for analgesic drugs. In other cases it can offer greater

relief than drugs alone can achieve. Acupuncture has also been shown to offer relief for a wide range of other conditions, including: incontinence, hot flushes, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, anxiety and lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is accumulation of lymph fluid under the skin. It is a common side effect of cancer treatment, especially lymph node removal. Usual treatments offered range from lymph drainage massage to wearing compression bandages, but no commonly accepted cure is available. A study showed that acupuncture can significantly reduce swelling, thereby improving flexibility and reducing discomfort. This reflects our clinical experience. We believe that acupuncture could be a real game changer for people with lymphoedema. If you are suffering discomfort give acupuncture a try! Relief may be at hand. PBA

Zoe brings home gold By Sam Duff

She may only be 11 but a Brooklyn-trained karate kid recently won gold at the Karate New Zealand Nationals in Porirua. Zoe Ashton-Lawes, from Wadestown Primary School, says she was ecstatic to bring home gold in the kata category. “I was pretty excited,” she says. “I told all my friends, they were very excited for me.”

Zoe says she was proud of how well she had done as she did not expect to do so well. “It was quite a surprise,” says Zoe, who is not taking anything for chance for next year’s Karate New Zealand Nationals. This was the second year in a row Zoe attended the competition, in 2014 she picked-up a bronze for kata. Zoe trains at Brooklyn Rembuden under sensei Patricia Reilly. In December last year Zoe went to the Manawatu Championships where about 120 competitors went head to head. Zoe took out a first in her kata round and went on to pick-up a gold medal in the kumite, fighting.

WINNER: Brooklyntrained karate kid Zoe AshtonLawes, 10, won gold at the recent Karate New Zealand Nationals.

Also in December she took part in the Kyoso Cup in Wainuiomata where she was in the 9 to 11 year old category and came second in kata and third in kumite. Asked what she enjoys about karate, Zoe says it is fun and she likes making friends when she goes to competitions. She says she plans on going as far as possible in the sport. “I would like to become a black belt one day,” says Zoe, who wants to be a space scientist when she leaves school.  For more information about Brooklyn Rembuden contact Patricia on 0272976049 or go to www.brooklynrembuden. co.nz

Guard fundraiser A car is being auctioned to keep life guards, such as those at Lyall Bay and Oriental Bay, can stay on patrol. Surf Life Saving New Zealand is auctioning a brand new vehicle, donated by Thrifty Car Rental, valued at more than $80,000.

State Insurance is also offering one year’s free car insurance to the winner of the auction and BP is providing a gift card valued at $260. The auction closes on August 12 at 8pm and can be found by going to trade.me/Thrifty.

Lanes open The opening of a cycle lane on Victoria Street brings Wellington one step closer to the completion of its planned $90 million cycle network. The new cycle lane is part of a Wellington City Council transformation of Victoria Street. Beginning in Dixon Street, the

cycleway, which includes a short kerbside section, connects with the shared cycle and walking path in Karo Drive and through Pukeahu National War Memorial Park. Wellington Mayor Celia WadeBrown says the Council is committed to improving cycling infrastructure.

Bocce success in Los Angeles A pair of Miramar bocce players has picked-up several medals at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. Player Trevor Hetherington and unified partner Ann Lilley will be returning to the country having been part of the bronze-winning New Zealand bocce team. The team of four is made up of Trevor, Ann and two

players from the Manawatu. Ann and Trevor, who both play bocce at the Mornington Golf Club, did not pick-up medals in the pair’s competition, however the Manawatu players won silver. Trevor won a bronze in the men’s single event. Bocce head coach Lyn Ryan says Trevor ‘played out of his skin’. New Zealand sent 36 athletes

to the games, four of which are competing in bocce. The other two bocce players are from the Manawatu. The Special Olympics were founded in 1968 and first held at Soldier Field in Chicago where 1500 athletes competed. This year more than 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches from 177 countries competed in Los Angeles.

Marist St Pats were defeated by Old Boys University in the final of the Jubilee Cup at Porirua Park on Saturday. After 80 minutes on the field and a strong comeback from the local side the final score was 30-27. The real action of the game when

there was just 20 minutes to go and a try by OBU put the score at 25-6. Despite the wet conditions MSP fought their way back in the final quarter for a respectable loss. The two sides have not met in a Jubilee Cup final since 2002 when MSP triumphed over OBU.

Capturing everyday life at Kilmarnock Heights Home Don’t be surprised if you see the residents of Enliven’s Kilmarnock Heights Home adorning the pages of the newspaper or perhaps even a glossy magazine. Professional photographer Mike Heydon, from Jet Productions, was in Berhampore to take photos of residents, staff and volunteers at the rest home recently. “I think everyone had a great time – even those who were a little camera shy at first,” says External Relations Manager Alisha Kennedy. The photos will be used in brochures, flyers, advertisements and websites for Enliven, including Kilmarnock Heights Home. “It’s important to Enliven that we capture real moments, with real people who really love living at Kilmarnock Heights,” says Alisha. “We asked the residents in advance if they wanted to be involved and many of them jumped at the opportunity – it’s something a little bit different and a little bit spontaneous, plus they really wanted to help out.” On the day of the photo shoot the residents, staff and volunteers carried on with their usual activities and routines while the photographer snapped away. “We want the advertising to reflect everyday life at Kilmarnock Heights Home, so everyone is encouraged to carry on with their day while the photographer captures it.”

She explains that getting residents involved in the photo shoot fits nicely with Enliven’s philosophy of care, called the Eden Alternative. The Eden principles touch on ideas such as variety and spontaneity, companionship, continuing hobbies and meaningful activity. “The key thing about Eden is that it’s elder-directed, and is all about ensuring older people have companionship and meaning in their lives.” Enliven's Kilmarnock Heights Home, located at 20 Morton Street in Berhampore, provides rest home and respite care, as well as a popular day guest programme. PBA  For more information about Kilmarnock Heights Home, call 04 380 2034, email kilmarnockheights@psc.org.nz or visit www.enlivencentral.org.nz.

DISCUSSION TIME: Your Choice Wellington coordinator Andrea Wheatley with Your Choice presenter and youth worker Chris Silvester. PHOTO: Sam Duff

Dispelling healthy relationship myths By Sam Duff

A lot of teenagers regret the first time they have sex. True or false? That will be just one of the talking points when an early intervention life skills programme kicks-off at a local college this month. Your Choice Wellington coordinator Andrea Wheatley says Your Choice is a nation-wide education programme that gives young people the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their sexual activities and relationships. “Young people need to understand the full value of themselves and their bodies,” Andrea says. “We want them to have healthy relationships and a lot of people don’t know how to have healthy relationships.” Presenters aged between 18 and 25 go into classrooms and take the sessions, which Andrea says are not sex education classes. Your Choice presenter and Newtown youth

worker, Chris Silvester, says there is quite a gap in young people’s education about healthy relationships. “The primary place young people learn about healthy relationships is through their parents and a lot of kids come from broken families or don’t have an open dialogue with their parents or mentors.” One of the discussions will focus around cultural and media pressure when it comes to what relationships should be like, Chris says. Your Choice, which is run by the Family Education Network, is set to be held in a Wellington high school for the first time in seven years. “Everybody in New Zealand needs to hear the content that we have,” Andrea says She says her goal is to visit another four schools in the next year with the Your Choice programme, Andrea says Your Choice Wellington will be holding a quiz night fundraiser on August 21.
