Sunfl wers for Spring By Laura Kavanagh The youngest members of the community are celebrating the spirit of Spring by taking part in a nationwide sunflower project. Children from Onslow Kindergarten planted the first sunflower seeds of the season as part of the 2014 Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens project. The initiative was rolled out last

week with 236 kindergartens from around the country taking part. Daltons General Manager, Colin Parker says the main objective of the project is to inspire and empower the next generation of kiwi gardeners. “There is something about sunflowers that really engages children,” Colin says. Continued from page 1 “Last year it was great to see the joy on the kindergarten children’s faces as they watched their sunflowers grow, and feedback from teachers was really positive.” At the end of the project each kindergarten will nominate a best gardener, and regional prizes are up for grabs for the kindergarden which grows the tallest sunflower. Onslow k inderga r ten teacher Diane Mallard says this is the first time Onslow

Kindergarten has been involved with the project but she says gardening is something many of the children already enjoy. “Many of them are quite interested in gardening,” Diane says. “It is especially exciting for them to see the plants grow over time.” She says sunflowers are particularly great for the children to plant. “There is something special about sunflowers… growing from a tiny seed,” Diane says.

By Laura Kavanagh Johnsonville local Bridget Spiers was wearing her red nose with pride last week. The thirteen-year-old was one of two Cure Kids Ambassadors, who was invited to meet with Qantas crew to celebrate Red Nose Day. In support of Cure Kids New Zealand’s annual charity appeal, Red Nose Day, Qantas is encouraging customers to donate towards a special red nose from the check-in counters before they fly and wear it on-board during the flight. Cure Kids raises funds for medical research for children with serious illnesses and conditions with the aim to improve treatments and prolong lives – with the ultimate goal of finding cures. Cure Kids ambassadors Bridget and fifteen year old Liam Todd are two of the members who appreciate the funds collected the most. Both live with life threatening illnesses as Liam lives with Maxillary sinus cancer and Bridget lives with

Neurogenic bladder and grade four kidney reflux. Qantas Regional General Manager New Zealand, Igor Kwiatkowski says Qantas is a long-time supporter of Cure Kids and its Red Nose Day campaigns to help children living with serious illnesses. “Qantas is honoured to be part of Red Nose Day and proud that the appeal marks the celebration of our ten year partnership as Cure Kids’ international travel partner,” Igor says. “Donations from our customers and employees help fund vital research into serious illnesses that affect children across New Zealand. “We’re looking forward to raising even more this year, throughout the appeal month and beyond.” RED NOSES: Bridget Spiers, 13. from Johnsonville, who lives with Neurogenic bladder and grade four kidney reflux, with 15 year old Liam Todd from Hataitai, who lives with Maxillary sinus cancer. Johnsonville trains delayed By Dave Crampton

In summer it’s the heat, in winter it’s the rain that causes train delays. For nine days in the past three weeks, Johnsonville trains have been running late because of track problems. Tranz Metro has cited problems at a steep section of the track south of Crofton Downs where trains have to reduce speed on occasion. “It’s wet,” a Tranz Metro spokesperson says when asked why trains were not running to schedule. A KiwiRail spokesperson says it was standard practice to reduce speeds on the Johnsonville line during adverse weather conditions. In some cases trains are cancelled after it rains, with no buses replacing them. In all cases MetLink says that “services on the Johnsonville line are experiencing delays… due to slippery track conditions.” These delays have led to

cancellations as trains that reduce speed could not get to Johnsonville in time to return to the city. Scoop Media columnist Lindsay Shelton is not impressed. “Are they blaming the weather? Or will they admit that the regional council’s new Matangi units are unfit for the Johnsonville line?” he asks. Greater Wellington’s Phil-

lippa Lagan says the problem is not with the Matangi trains. “The Matangi trains are designed to run on the Johnsonville line.” But Angus Gabara, Manager Rail Operations at Greater Wellington, says the Matangi trains are more sophisticated and sensitive to potentially risky conditions so safety mechanisms will kick in quickly to either halt or

The school drama that never happened

Artsplash kicks off next month, with thousands of students participating in drama, dance and wearable art. Johnsonville’s St Brigid’s School is entering again this year, and have been busy practising the drama “That Never Happened” written by teacher Maggie Johnson. They will be performing at the Opera House on Tuesday, September 2 in front of parents, Whanau, friends and the public. Josh Duckett, 11, as ‘Jason’ in his best American accent, outlines a scenario to the audience and asks if what he outlined actually happened. slow the train down. In addition, the use of friction modifier solution on the line to help reduce the wheel squeal noise may contribute to slippery track condition. “We’re working to strike a fine balance between sufficient amounts of friction modifier to reduce the wheel squeal noise without causing adhesion issues,” he says.

That’s because it happened in 1893. Joachim Ramos, 12, who has done some acting when living in the Phillippines, is looking forward to performing in a full Opera House. Artsplash started as a one-day visual art exhibition beneath the Oriental Parade Band Rotunda, but is now Wellington’s biggest primary and intermediate event, with four dance shows, two drama shows, six music and Wearable Art shows and up to 1000 works of visual art exhibited in the Michael Fowler Centre. Maggie says her students are getting an opportunity she never got. “If I was young and got to perform in the Opera House, I’d think that was the coolest thing

Churton Park students get arty By Dave Crampton

TALENTED: Amazing sculptures displayed by talented kids at Churton Park School. PHOTO CREDIT: Dave Crampton.

Creative students from Churton Park School have a sculpture exhibition in the Johnsonville Library, after participating in a sculpture project based on books by award-winning author Kyle Mewburn. The school was one of 11 participating schools, including two classes from both Rewa Rewa and Karori Normal schools. Each class used a Mewburn picture book to inspire their sculpture, with Room 14 using “Old Huhu”, who died after flying to the moon and back, and Room 15 using “Three Cheers For No Ears” about an elephant with very small ears. Acting Principal Di Patchett says Room 14 decided to make “Old Huhu” after a student vote, and was surprised at how good it looked. “They were delighted with the finished product as many did not envisage it to look as wonderful as it did,” Di says. After exhibiting at the Welling-

ton Central Library, some were toured around community libraries, with Churton Park School’s creations arriving at Johnsonville Library a few days ago. Room 15 got into separate groups to make elephant ears to put on their giant elephant sculpture for display. “We used old pantyhose for the trunk – stuffed with newspaper and fluff – then we painted it all and some kids made some grass for the bottom,” teacher Cheryl Diamond says. Matthew Lowes, 9, says he had a lot of fun contributing to the sculpture and has already been to the library to see the display, which was exciting. “Just seeing the work at a big library with people looking at – I feel really proud,” he says. The students’ work will be exhibited at Johnsonville Library until October 3, and at Khandallah and Wadestown libraries from September 12. In October, Cummings Park Library in Ngaio and Karori Library will be exhibiting the sculptures.

Ngaio volunteer recognised By Laura Kavanagh A Ngaio man has been recognised for his work with others as the regional finalist for the Pride of New Zealand award in emergency services. He was very surprised by the nomination and says his Mum put his name forward. By day, Wayne is a senior analyst for Treasury but outside of work, Wayne spends his time wearing a number of different volunteering hats. Wayne volunteers as an ambulance paramedic every Friday night. “You see everything from trivial things to cardiac arrests, murders, falls, car crashes,”

Wayne says. “Friday is always busy… never a dull moment.” He says he enjoys working with such a dedicated group of people. “They provide an amazing level of care,” Wayne says. He enjoys the feedback from the public who say they are grateful for the work Wellington Free Ambulance does. “You meet people from all walks of life,” Wayne says. “It has changed me without a doubt.” Wayne has also been involved with Land Search and Rescue since 1984. He says there is a lot more analysis and planning involved

with responding to missing persons, which has been proven to be much more effective. And if that was not enough, Wayne also serves free breakfast and reads to children at Windley School in Cannons Creek with other Treasury staff once weekly or fortnightly. Wayne is not too concerned about winning the award, and says being able to meet the other volunteers has been the real prize. “You get energy from just talking to others.” He encourages other people to get involved with volunteering. “Any time you can give makes a difference, it can be

just an hour out of your week.” Wayne Stevens will be traveling to Auckland for the National Selection on September 10.  Voting is now open for anyone who would like to vote for him or anyone else in the 'people's choice' category. www.prideofnzawards. co.nz/peopleschoice/ wayne--stevens VOLUNTEER: Ngaio resident Wayne Stevens is Wellington’s regional finalist for the Pride of New Zealand Award in emergency services. Controversial song heading to court MECHANICAL The Electoral Commission has refused to reconsider its advice that the song and music video to Ngaio musician Darren Watsons’s song are “election programmes” under the Broadcasting Act and "election advertisements” under the Electoral Act. Last week the controversial song hit number five in the NZ singles charts with minimal airplay.

Mr Watson has now deleted the satirical music video from internet video sites, and iTunes has been instructed to remove the song, which can now only be played on the airwaves during news reports. Mr Watson says he felt he had no choice but to remove the song and video from the Internet; he was not prepared to add a “promoter statement” to his work indicating it is an election advertisement. The Electoral Commission says the track cannot be broadcast on radio or television because it is an election programme. “There are strict rules in the Broadcasting Act 1989 that prohibit the broadcasting on radio and television of material by third parties that appears

to encourage voters to vote or not to vote for a political party or candidate,” Chief Electoral Officer Robert Peden says. Watson does not believe the Commission is right in its approach to the law and is to challenge the Commission's advice in the High Court on freedom of expression grounds. Mr Watson’s lawyer, Wendy Aldred, says there is a concern about the “chilling effect” the Electoral Commission's interpretation of the legislation could have on musicians who wish to make political comment through their music. Sam Scott, of Wellington band Phoenix Foundation, believes no artist should be silenced because they have political opinions in an election year. “It seems like the opposite to democracy if you ask me,” Mr Scott says.

Karori welcomes residents association By Laura Kavanagh The long awaited inaugural meeting of Karori’s Residents Association is to be held this week at Karori Park Sports Club and Café. Named the Karori Association, the aim of the group is to work for the betterment of Karori and surrounding suburbs representing Karori residents, businesses and community organisations. Last October, an initial meeting of Karori locals to set up an interim committee was well attended. This Thursday’s meeting will be a chance for the association to ratify

its constitution and to discuss local issues pertinent to Karori. Interim chairperson Lesleigh Salinger says the Karori Association will be a great for the Karori community. “People are impatient to see growth and development in Karori, especially in the town centre,” Lesleigh says. She says the association will be able to meet and discuss issues important to Karori and the surrounding suburbs, and be able to communicate with the Wellington City Council. At the forthcoming meeting, people

LIFE CHANGING: A ground breaking pilot programme could potentially allow three year-old Nakiyah Reid from Wellington to eat and drink. PHOTO SUPPLIED.

A new pilot program me launched at Starship Children’s Hospital will change the life of Nakiyah Reid. The hospital launched the Hunger Provocation Programme this month, which aims to help hundreds of children get off feeding tubes, and learn to eat and drink again. Around 70 children each year are discharged from Starship with a feeding tube still in place, requiring their parents or caregivers to continue to give their child liquid feeds through a tube that is either inserted through their nose or surgically inserted into their stomach. It is estimated there are currently more than 600 tube-fed children in New Zealand, with one in four identified as being appropriate for tube weaning. Three year-old Nakiyah travelled from her home in Wellington to begin the three-week programme on August 18. As a baby she had an inverted jaw, found it hard to latch with breastfeeding, had severe reflux, and failed to thrive. She has relied on a feeding tube to sustain her since she was born.

Nakiyah’s mother Shoni Reid says she is excited about the trial. “I have dreamed about this day for so long,” Shoni says. “She deserves to eat like her sisters.” “To have my baby eating means the world to me.” Each patient who is part of the trial is required to attend an outpatient assessment followed by a three week daystay programme with intensive daily input from a primary consultant, dietitian, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and nurse. Before this programme parents had to either travel abroad for treatment, attempt on-line supervision, or pay around $25,000 for an overseas therapist to try to manage the complex feeding programme in the child’s home without medical support. A one-off trial was successfully completed at Starship with five year-old Thomas Morrison last year. Thomas’ mother Louise Morrison says it changed their lives. “Thomas is now at school and is able to go and eat with his classmates at lunchtime instead of just sitting there doing nothing with his pump going,” Louise says.

Aro Valley switches to solar power Local start-up Aro Solar recently helped Aro Valley Community Centre make the switch to solar power. The Aro Valley community centre is the first in New Zealand to be fully powered by renewable energy. Any power not used goes

back into the grid and any savings will go to the play centre next door. Aro Solar was one of the three teams to complete our Smart Energy Challenge, involving social entrepreneurs and community projects that help to reduce energy use and

DON'T FORGET

encourage clean energy. Teams used crowd-funding and the Wellington City Council matched the amount each raised. Miranda Voke, one of the Aro Solar team, says it was great to have the Smart Energy Challenge supporting

their project. “It gave us a real incentive to take the concept from being an idea to installation,” Miranda says. “The next step will be to work out how to expand the project to other suburbs and, potentially, to Auckland.”

Aerobics stars vye for national title By Laura Kavanagh Friends Scarlett Reeve and Tabi Watt will be facing some tough competition next month when they compete in the New Zealand Competitive Aerobics Federation (NZCAF) National School Aerobics Championship. The Raroa Intermediate students will travel to Invercargill for the event having qualified at the Wellington Regional Competition this month. It was an unexpected win for the girls who only took up aerobics last year to keep fit and have fun. Scarlett’s mother Katherine says the surprise was well deserved. “T hey have wo r k e d extremely hard,” Katherine says. “It takes a lot of time, practice and energy…we are very proud.” Scarlett and Tabi qualified as part of the Resultz aerobics team based in Lifestyles Gym, Lower Hutt.

The girls says aerobics has an element of dance and gymnastics to it, and is a great sport to take up for those who are not interested in more conventional sports. “You get to meet lots of great people,” Tabi says. “It is a fun sport with music,” Scarlett says. They are grateful to their coach Tanya

Houpt, whom they work with to choose the music and design the choreography. The girls have also been lucky to use the local Khandallah Scout Hall to practise in. As for their chances in the national competition, the young aerobics stars are hopeful to bring home the gold. “We are very excited about the competition, but a little nervous,” Scarlett says. “There should be some tough competition.”  To help Tabi and Scarlett on their way to Invercargill, visit their give a little page at: www.givealittle. co.nz/cause/ tabiscarlett

Dirty Politics Dear Ed, The government is badly tainted by a descent into dirty politics by people within its ranks who should know better. Some of your correspondents excuse this unsavoury state of affairs by saying others do it too and we should all accept this mucky state of affairs as the 'new politics' and just get on

with it. At the risk of having my emails hacked, I utterly reject such a proposition. The ballot box provides a guaranteed means of delivering clean government. Those wishing to maintain their grasp on power with contingently juicier salary levels, privileges, and mouth-watering post-retirement opportunities, would

be vastly more inclined to engage in clean combat if they knew any descent into dirty politics would mean a thumping at the next General Election. And the next crowd in would take note accordingly. So the answer, as it should be, is up to us. Barry Lovegrove Karori

Daffodil Day

Friday August 29th ALL GLASS & GLAZING • Broken Windows, Mirrors

Blooming good cause Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s annual flagship event and one of the most important fundraising and awareness campaigns in the country. As well as providing an opportunity to raise awareness of cancer in New Zealand, Daffodil Day is a major funding source for the Cancer Society. We are proud to be regarded as one of the country’s most trusted charities and this is

reflected in our fundraising practices. The daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring, whose bright yellow blooms remind us of the joys the new season will bring.

Eye on Crime Johnsonville Neighbourhood Watch In Johnsonville, a window in a house in Haumia Street that had been left on security catches was forced open to gain access. In Ohariu Road a black BMW parked in a driveway had its front window smashed but nothing is known to have been stolen. In Newlands a burglary occurred at a house in Kinapori Terrace which was entered via a ranch slider door which had an insecure lock. Another burglary took place in Baylands Drive where the glass in a door was smashed allowing the burglar to reach through and unlock the door. A house in Miles Crescent was also burgled, entry being gained through a forced rear door. A red Holden Commodore parked in Batchelor Street was entered although no sign of force used, possibly a dodgy remote control failed to apply the lock. A red Mitsubishi L300 parked overnight on the road in Woodridge Drive was stolen. In Khandallah the wooden door at the side of the garage of a house in Khandallah Road was forced open and a child’s bike was stolen. In Nicholson Road a black Suzuki Swift parked

overnight on the street had its rear window smashed to give access to the boot where a quantity of diving gear had been stored. The wall of a Flat in Onslow Road was tagged in pink spray can paint. A silver BMW parked during the day in a carport in Lochiel Road was sprayed with gold paint on the front of the bonnet and front guard. In Ngaio a Toyota Diesel van parked overnight in Cockayne Road was stolen. It was later found with the ignition barrel ripped out and the engine left running. A white Nissan Vanette parked overnight on the road in Chelmsford Street was entered via a forced side door A stereo head unit and a cell phone were stolen. In Churton Park a radar detector was stolen from a Ford Ute Ranger parked locked overnight in the driveway of a house in Furlong Crescent. In Grenada Village a white Toyota Hiace van parked during the day outside a house in Guadeloupe Crescent was broken into via a smashed window in the sliding door.

Technology challenge at Queen Margaret’s By Laura Kavanagh

Wadestown Veterinary Clinic & Cattery 1 Grosvenor Terrace, Wadestown, Wellington Ph: (04) 472 2012 www.wadestown.co.nz RACHEL WINGATE has joined the friendly team at Wadestown Veterinary Clinic. Rachel is a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in Small Animal Surgery. She has worked at the Royal Veterinary College in London for 5 years and is trained in diagnostic veterinary ultrasound. Rachel really enjoys working with the fantastic team at the clinic and is committed to providing quality, sensible, empathetic care to her patients and clients alike. At our clinic, you will see the same vet each time, either Rachel or Mike Scully.

The gloves were off and competition was fierce at a technology challenge held at Queen Margaret College last week. Students from Scots College, Wellesley College, and St Marks Church School joined Queen Margaret College students in a competition that put their minds and creativity to the test. The students were given challenges to complete with limited materials, including constructing a hurdle out of newspaper. Head of the junior school at Queen Margaret College Kathleen McDonnell says the school decided to hold the technology challenge to fill the void left behind by the BP Technology Challenge. “That competition has been around for years, so when we heard it was no more, we thought let’s keep it going ourselves,”

Kathleen says. She says last week’s challenge was on a small scale, but she would love to extend the invitation to other city schools. “It is great for the children because it involves problem solving and team work,” Kathleen says. “And it is nice to have different schools coming and working together.” Diane Marsh’s son Xandi Cooke took part in the challenge and she says it was nice for the different schools to get together. Student Jaskiran Rahi thought the day was challenging and very fun. “I was surprised how at how we managed to do it,” Jaskiran says. Queen Margaret College took out the challenge for the year three and fours, while St Marks Church School won the year five and six competition.

Mikado comes to Wellington By Laura Kavanagh The Mikado is coming to Wellington with a talented cast including several local faces. Johnsonville performer Anne Keen has been touring as part of the Wellington Gilbert and Sullivan(G&S)Light Opera production since July in the lower North Island with a cast of 40 singers, including 24 players from Orchestra Wellington. Director Gillian Jerome returns, with music director and Johnsonville based Hugh McMillan, to present another production by the society following its acclaimed recent regional tours of Pirates of Penzance, the double bill HMS Pinafore and Trial by Jury and The Gypsy Baron. The plot revolves around the many situations that arise when the Mikado, Emperor of Japan, comes to inspect the workings of local officialdom in the town of Titipu, incidentally searching for his son who has fled the attentions of an aged lady of his court. The son has fallen in love with a

Wonderful girls become extraordinary women at Marsden local girl but prospects become very fraught with red tape due to the Mikado’s edicts. To avoid gruesome capital punishment the officials plot to cover up their scheming but this unravels in spectacular fashion in the best tradition of political spin gone wrong. Anne says the production tour has been going well being well received by audiences. “Mikado is one of the more popular of the Savoy operas,” Anne says.

A life member of the Wellington G&S Light Opera, Anne has been involved in many of its productions over the years. A trained singer, Anne says performing has been a long time interest for her from her teens. “It’s good to be doing something different and you meet lots of people,” Anne says.  The Mikado will be coming to the Opera House on September 5 and 6.

Applications are now invited for entrance into Year 11 and Year 12 at Marsden in 2015. Scholarships are available for academic, cultural or sporting excellence. Cold Sores or Herpes Simplex Cold sores are a common health condition which can be painful but are generally more often annoying and embarrassing for those who get them. They are not life threatening but are certainly treatable and manageable. Often the cold sores appear at the worst times – for instance when you have a special event planned and cold sores are the last thing that you want to worry about. We are all exposed to the cold sores virus but not all of us will experience an outbreak of cold sores. Those who do, usually get repeated attacks. Our first exposure to the virus is most likely in childhood. It tends to stay in our bodies, doing nothing until later in life when certain things ‘trigger’ it to become active and cause cold sores to appear. The virus responsible is called herpes simplex type 1, which can cause both facial and genital herpes. It has nothing to do with the common cold virus but having a cold or the flu, or being run down from stress or some other illness, can provide the perfect ‘trigger’ for cold sores to develop. Sunburn is another common ‘trigger’. Cold sores usually start out with a tingling, burning or itchy feeling on the skin where the sores eventually will appear – usually around the mouth or nose. A red swollen patch then develops over the next 24 hours which is often very painful, and turns into a blister or a group of blisters. These crust over and dry-up after about a week, with the sores eventually healing completely and disappearing

Medicines to relieve symptoms of the actual sores are available from your Self Care pharmacist.

10-14 days after the first tingle. The virus remains in your body until something like stress, an infection, or the common cold ‘triggers’ it again and more cold sores develop – often in the same place as before. Cold sores are transferred easily from person to person and can be particularly dangerous for babies, or for people taking medicines that affect their immune systems. “Kissing is a common way of spreading the virus. Parents who have cold sores should be careful not to

kiss children until the sores have healed as they risk passing them the virus for life,” caution Self Care pharmacists. They also advise “don’t share your eating and drinking utensils, or face cloths and towels, because you could pass-on the virus that way”. As further advice, people should wash their hands thoroughly after they have bathed and treated cold sores, or if they accidentally touch the sores. “It is extremely important not to touch or rub your eyes without washing your hands first. Stress is a normal part of life. Many events that happen to you and around you -- and many things that you do yourself -- put stress on your body. You can experience stress from your environment, your body, and your thoughts. How Does Stress Affect Health? Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress - a negative stress reaction. Distress can lead to physical symptoms including headaches, upset

stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. Research suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases. Stress also becomes harmful when people use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs to try and relieve their stress. Unfortunately, instead of relieving the stress and returning the body to a relaxed state, these substances tend to keep the body in a stressed state and cause more problems.

Sleek styling, comfort, sound and power are usually the first things that come to mind when people thing of the name Maserati however, the Italian manufacturer has now proven it is up there with its more mainstream cousins; earning 5-star ANCAP safety rating. AA Motoring services general manager Stella Stocks says while her preference is for all motorists to put safety at the top of the list when they consider buying a new car - there’s a category of drivers who select for style and uniqueness within a small set of brands - and Maserati is on that list. The company’s Ghibli did well in the frontal offset, side intrusion and pole impact crash tests to earn the maximum safety rating. Ms Stocks says while the make of car does not include a number of active Safety Assist Technologies (SATs) becoming standard on many new cars, it does include front seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters, dual frontal and side curtain airbags along with a driver knee airbag. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is standard and seatbelt reminders are also fitted to all seats.

“New cars with 5 star safety ratings have become the norm, which is why ANCAP continually raises the bar to encourage manufacturers to put safety first. The Ghibli’s maximum ANCAP safety rating helps to ensure motorists have a very wide range of new vehicles to consider.” The VW Polo also has a high ANCAP rating, and boasts EBD and ESC as standard along with hill launch assist. Also standard is secondary brake collision assist, which activates if the vehicle is involved in a serious crash to prevent or mitigate the severity of a secondary impact by reducing the speed and stopping the vehicle safely if the driver is unable to. ANCAP is supported by all Australian motoring clubs, the New Zealand Automobile Association, the Australian Government, the New Zealand Government, Australian state and territory governments, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation. The full list of ANCAP’s vehicle safety ratings, other vehicle safety information and the specifications of the rated vehicles are available online at aa.co.nz or rightcar. govt.nz.

New Zealand's largest and tastiest culinary festival, Wellington on a Plate, is coming to the Northern suburbs this week. The festival showcases the regions food and beverage sector, and develops culinary tourism in the region. On Friday at Zealandia, beer and food guru, Neil Miller will be hosting a Zealandia tour and a degustation featuring native plants from the valley and matched with stunning local beers. The focus will be on edible plants, before sitting down for a seven course degustation at Rata Café – with an eighth course for the brave. Guests will be served by head chef Michael Dennis.

Bookings are essential. “We’re trying to tell the story of the sanctuary,” Michael says. “We think we’re putting together a pretty good meal - we’re doing wild rabbits sausages on purple Maori potato, wild boar and puha, and tua tua (baby crab) cottage pie,” he says. The menu will also be available on Saturday, and each menu item has a beer match. In its seventh year, Wellington on a Plate is eight times as larger than the inaugural festival, and participation has increased more than 150 per cent, festival director Sarah Meikle says. “The festival has quickly earned its place as a must-do event – one that sees people actually highly anticipating the depths of winter.”

Wellington triathletes race the world By Laura Kavanagh Young local triathletes Emma Stewart and Sophie Bright will be representing New Zealand this Saturday. They will be lining up with thousands of triathletes from around the world to contest the World Triathlon Championships in Edmonton, Canada. Representing New Zealand in their age group the triathletes will be joined by local technical official Cathi Davey. For Emma and Sophie the chance to race wearing a silver fern will be the culmination of over twelve months of hard work. Emma describes it as challenging and incredibly rewarding. “Triathlon is demanding because you have to train in all three disciplines, which adds up to a lot of time,” Emma says. “I'm often training 15 hours a week and there's always schoolwork as well." Both girls train with Capital

Sports Performance, and coach Gene McNaught praises their discipline and dedication. “Every time these girls turn up they train with everything they’ve got. The improvements they’ve made are seriously impressive,” Gene says. Sophie was the first junior in the recent Scorching sprint duathlon and came fourth in the College Sport Wellington U19 road championships beating many older girls. The previous week she was the fastest senior girl for Wellington Girls College at the College Sport 2km relay road race despite being selected in the ‘B’ team. Technical official Cathi is part of the international team responsible for running the event. "I’ll be responsible for ensuring all athletes follow the rules in the transition zone,” Cathi says. Her role has to be strictly neutral but she'll be quietly hoping Emma and Sophie do well.

Young divers come home with medals By Laura Kavanagh A group of young Wellington divers have brought back a host of medals from the Diving New Zealand Nationals. The Wellington Diving Club sent eight divers between the ages of 12 to 24 to Auckland this month to compete in the national competition. To compete in this national event, divers have to achieve qualifying scores in regional and national events during the competition season. The Wellington Diving Club squad brought home a total of 18 medals (nine Gold, seven Silver and two Bronze). Head Coach of the Wellington Diving Club James Hardaker says

the divers put in some great performances at nationals, winning medals, titles, breaking records and bringing home many trophies. “It was great to see Wellington back up there and hopefully this is just the first of many successful events for these divers,” James says. After the Diving New Zealand Autumn Championships, Wellington Diving Club divers Anton Jenkins and Yu Qian Goh won places in the Diving New Zealand National Squad to attend the Junior World Championships in Penza, Russia this September. The nationals strengthened their position in the team with Anton Jenkins, making a new New Zealand record, in points scored, for one metre springboard,

along with winning three golds and one silver, and Yu Qian Goh winning two gold, two silver and one bronze. Anton is excited to be going to the Junior World Championships. “I dived to the best of my ability and it payed off,” Anton says. “I am now excited to do the same at the World Champs.” Ollie Armstrong-Scott was also named onto the New Zealand Development Squad. Ollie, who has returned to competitive diving after a break of several years whilst at university, was also a former Junior World Championships competitor.  For more information on Wellington Diving Club, visit: www. wellingtondiving.org.nz

By Dan Whitfield It had been a perfect season for the Newlands College first XV team, winning all its games until the weekend’s final match up against St Pat’s Wellington 2; unfortunately losing by 8 points to 3. Both teams came out on the day with a fighting spirit and all players worked hard, but a better game was played by St Pat’s Wellington on the day. Newlands College rugby convenor David Staite says despite the loss, it is a huge result for the school; and for most of the players it will be their last time playing in Newlands colours. In the seven rounds leading up to the first XV final, Newlands had a number of victories worth shouting about; including a 31-10 win over Rongotai, a 41-14 win over Heretunga, and a 67-17 win over Taita. The semi-finals saw Newlands rack up a 17-12 victory over Wainuiomata slinging them into the final round. David tells the Independent Herald both teams played really good games, and final scores in previous matches were only separated by about four to five

points. “We knew it was never going to be an easy game; it’s a quality side...But it’s still a huge achievement,” he says. With the first XV season now complete, the team has one friendly match against a visiting Chilean side later in the year. David says the focus after that will be to developing players and making sure those that are leaving the school next year continue to play the sport. Newlands College also had success with its second XV and under 15 teams crowning victory in respected championships. The second XV won its final game against St Pat’s Wellington third XV, winning 24-15. This was the first time in the past five years the Newlands team has come away from a championship in top spot. Zyrus Grace and Isiah Lalau were both stand out players for the second XV team over the weekend. The Newlands under 15 team won against Wellington College 2, with a final score of 26-17. A stand out player for the game was Quint Hollands. “Again this is a huge result for Newlands College,” David says.
