Last men standing By Nikki Papatsoumas A group of prominent Wellington musicians have swapped out guitars, drum sticks and microphones for cricket bats and balls, trading sweet tunes for the sound of leather on willow in the process. The ‘Smash Hits’ is a cricket team comprised of musicians from bands such as The Surgery, The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties, The Nudge, Newtown Rocksteady and The Pyram id Scheme.

The team are competing in a form of cricket k nown as Last Ma n Standing, which is the fastest growing cricket league in the world. This outdoor eight-aside T20 cricket game lasts around two hours. All eight wickets are needed to bowl a cricket team out, and when the seventh wicket falls, the last man stands on his own. The team was organised by James Coyle, member of The Nudge and Newtown Rock-

steady. James says the team used to play indoor cricket and decided to make a change to outdoor. The Smash Hits played their first game last Tuesday at Macalister Park, scoring 180 runs from in 20 overs. James says the Smash Hits will be bringing a “gentlemen’s sort of approach” to a classical style of cricket, and the team looks forward to seeing what the season will bring.

“It’s all a bit of tongue in cheek but we are also quite competitive. We play to win - however having a collection of friends together is more important at the end of the day.” James says they are hoping to qualify to make it to the national competition, and are getting ready to start fundraising for the trip. He says this will hopefully involve the musically talented team playing a show together at some point in the future.

Pilot programme kicks off By Nikki Papatsoumas Last week the Junior Netball Pilot Programme kicked off, with children from all over the Wellington region getting involved. The programme, which will take place at the ASB Centre in Kilbirnie over the next seven weeks, focuses on teaching years 1 to 4 students’ fundamental movement skills. Children participate in activities that introduce them to movement and balance. Smaller hoops and smaller softer balls are also used to make the game more accessible for younger children. Centre coordinator Ma r ia Hega r ty says the programme gives kids of a younger age so much more opportunity to learn, and also

gives them the skills to kick start their netball careers. “Their hands are so much smaller and it gives them more of a chance to catch the ball and have more success shooting. “We hope this will keep them coming back to play and keeping them engaged is what keeps them coming back at this age.” Parents are also encouraged to help out with coaching the young players. “This gives parents the chance to develop themselves as well. They can then go home and work with kids and encourage them,” says Maria. Depending on how the pilot goes, they will pick up the programme and offer it to students next year.
