Farmers market a fresh, new vibe Since the earthquakes devastated large swathes of the central city’s retail area, the Re:Start Mall in Cashel Mall – now operating as the Container Mall – has provided an attractive alternative retail environment that has proved hugely popular with Christchurch residents and tourists alike. However, it was always a temporary fix, and following the removal of the remaining container shops in January next year, the site will be prepared for the construction of a two-level, approximately 3500sqm building designed to house the new Riverside Farmers Market, plus neighbouring retail buildings. The project is being developed by Peebles Group, with

As well as providing economic benefits for stall holders and other central city businesses, the market will offer environmental benefits, too. These include natural and organic food production, the minimalisation of packaging and waste, the minimalisation of food miles and consequent reduction in carbon footprint with everything being produced, sold and purchased locally. Research has shown benefits to both farmers market producers and consumers alike. For example, British Columbia Farmers Market research from 2006 and 2012, showed an increase of 147 per cent in sales from $69 million to $170.5m.

Corporation’s research paper entitled ‘Understanding the Characteristics of Australian Farmers Markets’ stated that Farmers Markets are: “An opportunity to innovate and present, test and improve food products directly with consumers. The direct contact with consumers was reported to this research study as the most important aspect of farmers’ markets.” And for consumers they were seen as providing “Exposure to a variety of foods and the opportunity to learn abut how the food was produced and made as well as how to use it.”

Offering similar benefits to Christchurch, the Riverside Farmers An Australian Government ‘Rural Market is expected to open for Industries, Research and Development business November 1, 2018.

Council staff are currently focusing on developing the services that will be available at the 21st-century knowledge centre. They are working alongside partners Spark, TSB and Southbase.

Along with the myriad of commercial construction projects happening around the central city, the Christchurch City Council is forging ahead with its own construction and restoration projects. Here is an update on where they are at…

Town Hall

the Limes Room are being restored. The former Boaters restaurant is being rebuilt. The re-levelling of the Limes Room, which overlooks the Avon River and Victoria Square, was completed in February this year and concrete works in the auditorium are due to be finished in June.

Level working platforms are being created across the Convention Centre site to enable the Main Works contractor to make a swift start on the facility’s construction around the middle of the year. The preliminary design of the Convention Centre was recently completed. The main entrance to the Centre opens out to Oxford Terrace and the Avon River, and has been designed to reflect the fluid curves of Canterbury’s braided rivers. This will give visitors easy access to Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct and creates a space for civic powhiri and welcoming events.

Restoration of this treasured civic facility A time lapse camera has been installed is due to be completed in mid-2018. As part of a three-year conservation in the Town Hall. More than 150,000 new pavers will be laid in the square and many of the old ones will be reused in The Commons on the corner of Kilmore and Durham streets. The restoration is expected to be completed by March 2018.

Tram Tracks

The further extension of the partially constructed tramway is not currently funded, however the Council has set aside $102,000 in the 2017/18 Draft Annual Plan and is also planning to spend $72,000 the following year. This funding would be used to finish off works for the existing operating extension, which of earthquake- terminates in High Street at the corner Square is also of Lichfield and Manchester streets.

The Canterbury earthquakes left the square in poor condition, with significant damage to the ground, river walls and paved surfaces, creating trip hazards and leading to surface flooding in the rain. s h a r p - w i t t e d a rt i s t p r e s e n t s new exhibition A new exhibition by Canterbury artist Wayne Youle has opened at the Christchurch Art Gallery. Featuring high-energy, sharp-witted artmaking, the exhibition, entitled Look Mum No Hands presents new, recent and sitespecific works by Youle. From a glistening cobweb in faux-gold chain, to a supersized tyre swing, handknitted balaclavas and cast-bronze gumballs, Look Mum No Hands combines classic Youle works with new pieces delivered from his studio or painted directly onto the gallery’s walls.

Other works take a cheeky swipe at the business of artmaking, such as Holy Grail, a framed section of wall studded with a single red pin – the art dealer’s signal a work has sold. A more personal thread runs through Youle’s recent pieces, Milburn says.

About the artist Wayne Youle (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Whakeeke, Ngāti Pākehā) completed a Bachelor of Design at Wellington’s Polytechnic School of Design. He works as a sculptor, printmaker, painter and installation artist, frequently making use of found materials, and commenting upon and critiquing issues around biculturalism. He was the recipient of the 2010 Rita Angus Residency and exhibits nationally and internationally, including America, Australia and the United Kingdom. His work is held in the collections of Te Papa

Tongarewa, Auckland Art Gallery and Christchurch Art Gallery. Wayne Youle: Look Mum No Hands is on display at Christchurch Art Gallery from April 14 to September 3, 2017. Entry is free. A programme of free events is associated with this exhibition, including a sock-puppet-making event for families and kids (May 14), and two 30-minute ArtBite presentations by Warren Feeney (May 19, 12.30pm) and Felicity Milburn (August 11, 12.30pm), both being held in the exhibition space.
