Along with the myriad of commercial construction projects happening around the central city, the Christchurch City Council is forging ahead with its own construction and restoration projects. Here is an update on where they are at…
Town Hall
the Limes Room are being restored. The former Boaters restaurant is being rebuilt. The re-levelling of the Limes Room, which overlooks the Avon River and Victoria Square, was completed in February this year and concrete works in the auditorium are due to be finished in June.
Level working platforms are being created across the Convention Centre site to enable the Main Works contractor to make a swift start on the facility’s construction around the middle of the year. The preliminary design of the Convention Centre was recently completed. The main entrance to the Centre opens out to Oxford Terrace and the Avon River, and has been designed to reflect the fluid curves of Canterbury’s braided rivers. This will give visitors easy access to Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct and creates a space for civic powhiri and welcoming events.

Featuring high-energy, sharp-witted artmaking, the exhibition, entitled Look Mum No Hands presents new, recent and sitespecific works by Youle. From a glistening cobweb in faux-gold chain, to a supersized tyre swing, handknitted balaclavas and cast-bronze gumballs, Look Mum No Hands combines classic Youle works with new pieces delivered from his studio or painted directly onto the gallery’s walls.

About the artist Wayne Youle (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Whakeeke, Ngāti Pākehā) completed a Bachelor of Design at Wellington’s Polytechnic School of Design. He works as a sculptor, printmaker, painter and installation artist, frequently making use of found materials, and commenting upon and critiquing issues around biculturalism. He was the recipient of the 2010 Rita Angus Residency and exhibits nationally and internationally, including America, Australia and the United Kingdom. His work is held in the collections of Te Papa
Tongarewa, Auckland Art Gallery and Christchurch Art Gallery. Wayne Youle: Look Mum No Hands is on display at Christchurch Art Gallery from April 14 to September 3, 2017. Entry is free.
