S

ummer is over, and it is time to retire your travel apps until winter break (or worse —until summer), but don’t panic just yet. The start of the semester doesn’t mean you are going to be without technology completely. The app store is full of options that can help you survive the semester. From note-taking apps that seem more like personal assistants to study break distractions, these apps will complement any semester. The first week is almost over, so treat yourself to a few new technology surprises. Plus, they are all free!

Evernote

Studyblue

Candy Crush Saga

Relax Melodies

iOS and Android Harnessing the power of the Internet, Evernote allows you to create and review notes, pictures, web clips, files and more wherever you’re at with any device you have. Once your content is saved, it can be recovered on any device that has the Evernote app. In addition to creating and uploading content, Evernote allows you to send your content to other Evernote users. So whether you are taking notes for a friend or working on a project, Evernote makes it easy to share your information. A premium version is available for purchase.

IOS and Android Get rid of your paper flashcards and upgrade to a digital system. StudyBlue not only lets you create digital flashcards with audio and pictures but also lets you search through other students’ cards and study with their decks. While signing up for an account, you’ll also register what school you are attending so you can add or join your class and view study materials from other users. Once you’ve completed a deck, StudyBlue gives you a score and the option to study the deck again or set a timer to study at another time. Your StudyBlue account also is available online and can be synched with Evernote.

cost: Free...kinda IOS ANd Android If you haven’t seen this app pop up on your Facebook feed, I’m shocked. “Candy Crush Saga” is a “Bejeweled” clone that will leave you addicted to its colorful puzzles. As a freeto-play game, however, it will tempt you with its level passes and $.99 tools. If you are connected to Facebook, getting through this game is a lot easier. Since each level only takes a few minutes at the most to play through, it makes for the perfect distraction while working on a project, looking over a syllabus or while waiting for a class to begin. Fun fact: Candy Crush Saga was featured on Psy’s video “Gentleman.”

IOS ANd Android Take a deep breath, listen to the waves of a virtual ocean and relax. You may not need this app within the first few weeks of school, but when the professors begin loading you down with homework, papers and exams, you’ll be glad you downloaded this. Relax Melodies features 48 sounds that can be layered onto one another to create a soothing environment. If you are trying to fall asleep to one of the sounds but don’t want to leave the app on all night, Relax Melodies includes a timer that will exit the app after the set time. Other features include relaxation tips, an alarm, a sound mix generator and binaural beats.

ios and android This app is a lifesaver when you are on campus. It has a map for finding those tricky buildings and classrooms, shows you where the parking lots are around campus and the CART schedule is readily available. Did I mention,

it also gives you a weather report? The best part about the app is that it directs you to D2L. No matter where you are on campus, you can check your grades or those pesky deadlines professors like to set. This especially comes in handy when you are waiting

for a grade to be posted. You don’t have to be at your computer to check. When you are looking for a job or internship, the app also helps you out. You easily can access your account and look for open positions or check on your resume.

6 Relieve the Pain Pencil it in You definitely will want to stock up on some ibuprofen. Buy the big bottle. It may seem a little ridiculous, but I promise you won’t regret it. From post-game hangovers to stress headaches, you will always have some relief. Carry some in your backpack to relieve heat headaches or just leave it in your dorm, awaiting your return. College is stressful, and if you get through your four years without something hurting, I want to know your secret. Don’t go overboard. Just take two at a time, and never exceed eight in one day. They may help, but in large doses aren’t so good for your liver.

Raining down

Things to buy to survive your

Semester

College doesn’t mean never using a pencil again so, go buy a box of those trusty #2s. You may be used to just carrying around a ballpoint pen; but what are you going to do when that pop quiz happens, and the professor starts passing out scantrons? Just to be safe, keep a few pencils in the bottom of your bag. You don’t want to be that person asking to borrow a pencil every other class.

clean hydration

A water bottle is a must! It is hot out there and the only way to stay hydrated is water. Go to any store and there will be a mulitple options at all different price ranges. Not only are you staying healthy, but a reusable bottle will help keep the environment clean. By all means, carry a Dasani bottle around if that’s all you have, but maybe refill it once or twice before you toss it out.

Welcome to Norman, where when it rains, it pours. So channel your inner Rhianna and buy an umbrella-ella-ella. Honestly, one minute it is sunny, and the next, you’re soaking wet. Don’t get caught in a surprise downpour. Just keep a small umbrella handy, and you will ...for gummy vitamins. College does not always be nice and dry. lend itself to healthy eating, so wake up and take a multivitamin to balance out all that fried food and beer. So it doesn’t actually balance out, but it is nice knowing you are getting some good stuff, too.

Bind it up

The semester gets busy, and sometimes you just don’t have time to get the things you need. Prepare a survival kit that you can carry with you so you are ready for anything! This may sound crazy, but you will be glad you took the time to do it.

Invest in a stapler. Most professors won’t allow you to turn in unbound papers. Keep it classy, people. Folding the top corner is not going to cut it. Plus, it ensures that the weird guy’s paper turned in after yours doesn’t get mixed up. I mean that probably would never happen, but anything’s possible.

satirical relationship advice

the girl

the gay

the cynic

My significant and I are going to different schools this semester. What do I do? The Girl: Ride it out and see if it works. It’s always best to let things work themselves out. If this relationship is meant to be, then it will all be fine. Try to work out your schedules so you can talk on the phone or Skype. It won’t work at all if you guys don’t get to chat. After a few weeks, if you feel like it isn’t worth sticking around, maybe you should bring it up. Maybe he will feel the same, and you can have a clean break. Then, you will be able to meet new people on campus, like maybe that cute boy in your Spanish class or the guy you always run into at Starbucks. If you really want it to work out, it will. If you aren’t sure or think you want to take the chance to try something new, do it. Or someone new… The cynic: Buddy, what’s your deal? Your hometown sweetheart may be your gal, but let’s be honest—she’s probably everyone’s pal. And besides, you’re in Norman, where every girl is blonde, even the brunettes. Spandex pants are an acceptable form of public fashion, for godsakes. When you get home over the break, you can hold hands, take her out, and pretend you’re both virgins. Then hop on a plane, ditch your Jonas Brothers ring in the seatback pocket and get ready to put your tray table up for landing.

The Gay: Honey, there is one piece of advice that I tell everyone I know: Always have someone on the back burner. You’ve got that special someone — your main dish if you will — sizzling on the front flame. That special someone back home or at a different school will be around to snack on if you want them to be. However, never — and I mean never — forget to have your side dish simmering on the back. With your main dish so far away, keep in contact, but don’t forget to try all the new cuisine that is so readily available to sizzle in your back skillet. Plus, if you end up eating more of the side dish than you expected, the break up won’t be so bad. How crazy can someone really get from another state? Well…maybe you should lock down your Facebook and Twitter. You know, just in case.

This Thai restaurant is delicious and well, delicious. The atmosphere is quiet and small, white-walled with oriental art donning the walls, but quaint. While you’re there, check out the pad thai and rice or noodle bowls. They’re big enough to feed a hungry student for days. Most entrée prices range from about $6.50 to $7.95, or a little more for shrimp instead of chicken, pork or beef. Vegetarian options also are available. Plus, you can do take out, so on those nights you don’t like going out you still can enjoy some delicious thai food.

Pub W

3720 W Robinson St. (405) 701-5844 Hours; Everyday 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Only one word can sum up this eatery: swank. It’s a bit pricey, but worth the cost. Entrees range from $10 to $24, but include a chipotle meatloaf, pot roast and a petite fillet. The drink menu include several updated classics like a hibiscus cosmopolitan and a spin on an old fashioned with a ne’w’ fashion. It’s got an upscale feel, just right for date night. Oh, and they’ll play ESPN on several large-screen TVs and a hefty beer selection.

Hours; Everyday 9 a.m.- midnight Mamaveca’s is tucked away behind the west Wal-Mart and Lowe’s, but that doesn’t stop patrons from packing in the goodness at this bright, festive restaurant. A top indicator of good Mexican food is the quality of the chips and queso, and this one hits the mark. The lunch menu ranges between $6 to $9, while dinner options are a few dollars more. There also is a hefty a la carte section and a margarita menu to rival Fuzzy’s. It’s also a great place to go out when parents are visiting or with a group of friends.

Bill and Dee’s Tavern 311 E Main St. (405) 579-6227 Hours; Everyday 11 a.m.-2 a.m. One Google review of the bar said, “you won’t be bothered if your a normal guy, greaser, punk, redneck, native, hillbilly, good time’n, good gal, bad gal …” Quite the mix. Come here for live bands if you’re tired of the same three venues every week and you love live music of all varieties. And it’s just around the corner from campus favorites like Gray Owl Coffee and The Garage.

Hours: Clsoed sundays and mondays Tuesday- Saturday 11 a.m.- 6:30 p.m.

Just around the corner from campus is a selection of truffles that will blow your mind. Owner Andrew Marsh opened the business about a year ago, and has been experimenting with a unique candy menu since. Peach basil, rosemary honey and ginger lavender are among the selection, and all use locally grown products for the specific flavor. But even if you’re not too adventurous, there are classic flavors like white chocolate, cherry and mint chocolate. Marsh also carries other candies like coated almonds, hard candies and salted caramel. And it’s all preservative free.

It’s calm and quiet with music to match the ambiance. Just right for a romantic date. The hummus, of course, is a must at any Indian dinner place. The food is hearty, rich and perfectly spicy. Try the Lebanese tea, made with citrus and rosewater. Prices range from near $5 for some small dishes to about $30 for a full rack of lamb. Vegetarian specialties also are available. Plus, while you are there, read the restaurant’s story on the back of the menu. It will make you enjoy your meal even more.

Hours; Monday- Saturday 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. Sunday Noon- 5 p.m.

This little antique store is just east of Porter on Main, with a great collection of vintage records. From early Beatles records to The Bee Gees and more, nooks and crannies all over the store are hiding great finds. Here, you also can find great gifts for parents or cute old children’s books for younger siblings. And after visiting this little store, STASH and Roxy’s Funky Art Boutique are other interesting nearby retailers.

Look, you may think a comic store has nothing to offer you. But that’s not true. As far as superheroes go, this is the place to go in Norman. Everything from Judge Dredd to Superman to Spiderman, and lesser-known titles is tucked away here somewhere. But if you’re more into pop culture, you can find the comic version of True Blood or The Walking Dead in the indie comics section. It’s also stocked up on local artists and writers and upcoming stars of the comic world.

Outreach Thrift Store 621 12th Ave. NE #130 (405) 928-2072 Hours; Monday- thursday 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. Friday 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Closed saturdays Sunday noon- 6 p.m. Out of all the thrift stores in Norman, this is where I’ve always found the best digs. If you’re looking for a date party costume, or even just something to use in a DIY project, this is the place. You also can find vintage or ‘90s nostalgia. Or even if you just prefer to buy more affordable clothes.

The Earth Natural Foods 309 S Flood Ave. (405) 364-3551 Hours; Monday- Friday 9 a.m.- midnight Saturday 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. Sunday 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. Most everyone on campus is familiar with The Earth Café, but another option for natural foods is just a bit removed from campus. Open since 1969, it’s the experts in all things natural. From bulk grains, herbs and spices to soaps and cleaning supplies, there are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. And if you walk or bike to the store, you can get a 10-percent discount on your purchase.

The

What you should have done this summer

Grumpy

couch Potato words | Patrick mcsweeney

Our resident netflixjunkie fills you in on the best movies, music and television shows. For many, summer is a time for internships, networking, and resumé building. While all my friends were off changing the world at their D.C. internship, I watched a lot of Netflix, went to the movies, listened to new albums, and did I mention I watched a lot of Netflix. Here is a list of my favorite tv show, movie and album of the summer. If you haven’t experienced these yet, then you wasted your break. Time to catch up, guys.

‘Modern Vampires of the City’ by Vampire Weekend This was a big summer for new music, but for me, Vampire Weekend’s third album has been constantly playing in my car. I was hooked on this album from the first song, “Obvious Bicycle,” a much more down tempo song for Vampire Weekend, but the harmonies in this song reveal the musical talent and attention to detail the band provides. The remaining songs return to more typical Vampire Weekend, and you can’t help but dance as you listen. This album proves there is life for Vampire Weekend beyond the “Ivy league rocker” tag it has carried since its debut album. I will be seeing these guys at Austin City Limits this year and thanks to this album they are now top of my list of bands to see. So put down “Yeezus” and “Magna Carta…Holy Grail” and give this album a listen. Plus they will be playing on Oct. 5 in Tulsa.

‘The Conjuring’

‘Orange is the New Black’

“The Conjuring,” directed by James Wan, is responsible for the craziest nightmares and worst nights sleep I have had in a while. No joke. It was that intense. I am usually not one for scary movies, as each time I venture into the genre I am disappointed by giant plot holes, lack of character development, and extreme predictability. It is on these three levels that “The Conjuring” succeeds. “The Conjuring” provides characters all of us can care about and you never know what is going to happen next. This movie will be remembered as one of the best in the genre and is a must see for any horror movie fan. When finals week comes around, give this a watch, and you will have no problem staying awake to study for that 9 a.m. history final. It might make the library seem a little more creepy than it

Netflix is quickly becoming the place for quality original television, and “Orange is the New Black” confirms this notion. “Weeds” creator, Jenji Kohan, is responsible for this portrayal of life in a women’s prison. Kohan provides her typical satire and sarcasm and reveals the inner workings of a women’s prison through the eyes of Piper Chapman, the rich white girl in the joint, who causes more drama than one person should be able to. The supporting cast is what makes this show so great, as each carry scars that add to the drama and suspense. Each episode follows one of the women before they are in prison, which adds dimension and interesting plot twists throughout the season. All 13 episodes are on Netflix, so start watching before all your assignments begin, because you are going to want to

3. Seriously. Food!

Ask a bunch of new members if they want to go grab snow cones at Eskimo Sno or have a Classics 50s date. Both are easy ways to get to know people. Are they going to get a simple Sprittle, or are they going to spice things up with a Hot Tamale Pepper?

This may sound really obvious, but go hang out at the house. There is a reason you picked it on Preference Night. Go meet the members you don’t know yet.

5. Guess what? More Food.

Well, if you didn’t think we’d talked about food enough, go to house dinner. Everyone in the chapter is usually there, and you can meet a lot of the older members while also bonding with your pledge class.

Get Ready for

Gameday words | Ali Hausner Photo | Heather Brown

With Sooner football just nine days away, all you gals and guys are probably wondering what to wear. Girls can’t go wrong with a cute dress, boots and their favorite shade of crimson lipstick. For guys, a cool tee and Wranglers can’t be beat. The only question left to answer is where to find the perfect dresses and T-shirts. Sophomore Brittany Gaddis describes her ideal game day outfit as “something cute but comfortable.” Remember that when you’re getting dressed, you’ll have to deal with the Oklahoma heat – at least for the first half of the season! Most of the best game day gear can be found locally. Campus Corner is lined with some of the cutest boutiques. The newest addition is Stella Rae’s, which offers dressier options of crimson and cream. This store geared towards women is a great place to drop by for dresses and accessories especially, if you are more interested in the social aspect of football Saturdays than actually going to the game. The prices are great, especially on the accessories. Antique Garden provides an awesome selection of boots to fulfill that traditional game day look. Ladies and gentlemen, your look isn’t complete without a pair of boots. This store might be one of the pricier places on Campus Corner, but for the quality that you are getting, it is definitely worth it. Check out the sale section near the back; they always have cute red and white hanging up for a discount. Local provides a variety of unique shirts made by local artists. A shirt from Local will guarantee you don’t show up to home games wearing the same outfit as every other fan in the stands. “I have been obsessed with getting all my new shirts from Local,” sophomore Kassidy Quinten said. “It’s super unique and great that it is all Oklahoma

products.” Don’t go to Local looking for the Sooners logo because you won’t find it. Instead, there is a selection of Oklahoma-inspired T-shirts in red and white. As long as your shirt is the right colors and has something to do with this great state, you’ll be ready for Aug. 31. But if you girls are looking for a unique spin on a game day dress, Etsy shop HauteThreadsBoutique offers what I believe to be just downright genius. All you have to do is send in your favorite OU T-shirt to the owner of the online boutique, and she will send you back your very own custom game day dress. Customization styles include strapless, halter, tank top, short-sleeved and one-shoulder. You also can pick which type of fabric you want for the bottom portion of your dress. She clarifies on her website that once she gets the type of fabric you prefer, she will pick out three to five fabrics to complete the dress and let you pick from that. The only other information needed is the obvious bust, waist and hip sizes along with your height and general size. You have a little over a week to perfect your first game day outfit of the season. Just remember to ask yourself two things before you leave to go tailgate: Are you going to get too hot? Will your shoes be good walking all over campus, looking for the best tailgate party? If you answered yes to both, then hit the ground running in your new boots (actually, you might want to break them in before next Saturday. Blisters. Ouch!).

pop culture What a Girl Wants

did it hit the

spot? Each week, we take a look back at the pop culture moments that made us gasp, cry and scream. Here’s how this works: The closer something is to the dot on the page, the more we liked it. The farther away, the more it sucked.

Katy Perry’s leaked single, “Roar” The chorus revolves around roaring louder than a lion, but the track as a whole doesn’t live up to more than a weak purr and certainly doesn’t break any pop music barriers.

Lohan comeback? Just when our girl Amanda Bynes is down and out, Lindsey Lohan steps in to fill the resident crazy-celebbabe spot for us. Except this time we’re told she’s cleaning up her act. Here’s to secretly (and guiltily) hoping nothing goes as planned.

Dear Amanda Bynes, when we left you last spring, the struggle was just beginning. We forgave your bad wigs and the backto-back nose jobs. But soaking a dog in gasoline? No. Get better. Or at least get back on Twitter.

Oklahoma Oz Wicked, Gregory Maguire’s prequel adaptation to The Wizard of Oz, comes to the Oklahoma City Civic Center in musical form. The show, which has won 35 awards, will run through September, and even the cheap seats are worth it.

Pucker, a collection of pictures of babies eating lemons that’s a collaboration of photographer David Wile and April Maciborka, is the only thing that made me smile in the midst of a back-to-school psuedomeltdown. Get your cute on at
