Editor’s Note

This month I’d like to simply share a picture from our good friends at Super Gourmet. “A picture is worth a thousand words” and I’ll add a few more. With so many plastic bags used every day in Bocas, this is a great initiative to prevent plastic bags ending up in land fills, or even worse: the ocean. Well done, Super G!

¡Bien hecho, Super G! The Piratas Riders Visit Isla Colon with 300+ Motorcycles Friday July 15th, more than 300 motorcycles invaded Isla Colon to celebrate the 8th anniversary of the founding of the motorcycle club Piratas Riders. They have been active for 19 years now. The 9 original founders are from the Chiriqui province of Panama, but the club is comprised of more than 500 members, not only from Panama but from Mexico and all over Central America. I spoke with the president and cofounder Umberto Cebilla. He tells me that the motivation to start the club was to create civic organization in which everyone could participatemen, women, boys and girls. Also, while many motorcycle clubs are

known for their wild parties, the original vision of the founders was to create a more family-orientated group dedicated to civic duties. The main tenets of the Piratas Riders are tourism, volunteer work and passion for motorcycles. They have traveled most of the Americas, from Canada to South America, participating in many social projects. Good job guys and great way to break the “biker” stereotype.

New Column! Keepin’ it Local

Manteniéndolo Local

by Nicholas Corea

Me encanta ver personas trabajando duro.

Tourism is the life-blood of the Bocas del Toro economy. It has the potential to feed families, stimulate economic growth and further develop education and specialized skills. This column is dedicated to highlighting businesses in Bocas del Toro which both benefit tourism and the socio-economic prosperity of the area. Whether locally owned or a product of legal foreign investment, this column sheds light on enterprises that are doing their best to provide a great experience for tourists while conducting their business in a way that helps the community prosper. The inaugural column goes to Restaurante Tom. You can catch me there personally at least once a week, 11am to 5pm, Monday through Saturday, in the Municipal Market, on Avenida Norte and 2nd street, near the fire station and next to Mailboxes Ect.

The Bocas Breeze

You’re greeted with love and respect, a sea breeze and a view of sailboats and Isla Carenero. Amazing seafood options are available and tasty, soulful filling meals for as affordable as $4. My favorite is Pollo Guisado (Stewed Chicken) which comes with rice and beans, a salad, fried plantain, fresh avocado and a glass of juice. I love to see family businesses that love what they do. They have a great team, featuring Segio and Maribel, their son Jairo and his wife Leysi along with 4 employees, all from Bocas. The restaurant was started by Sergio’s aunt and has been in the family for over 50 years now. I love to see people work hard. Aside from my lunch always being delicious and served with a smile, it’s the hard work and dedication that keeps me voting with my dollar there. The Bocas Breeze salutes Restaurante Tom!

Juampi Caraballo Brings Panamanian National Surfing Championship Home to Bocas Congratulations to Juampi Caraballo who placed 1st in the category Open July 30-31st at Panama’s National Surfing competition in Santa Catalina. With this victory, he clinches the APS National Surfing Championship. There are 5 yearly competitions. He won the very first one this year, he placed 5th in the 2nd competition and has taken first place in the last two outings. With this victory he becomes the first surfer out of Bocas del Toro to win the APS Open Division, which the most prestigious title in Panamanian competitive surf. His father Juan Caraballo, who also took 1st place in the Longboard category, had this to say: “The title is dedicated to our people and beaches of Bocas del Toro, our home and training grounds!”

The Bocas Breeze

Juan went on to write a heartfelt piece about the love of surfing and what it means to his family and the sacrifices one makes competing on the national circuit while living and training in Bocas: The sacrifices of living in Bocas and Competing It’s not so much for the prize the reason for why we do theses kilometric trips. Boats or ferry, taxis and driving for hours to arrive tired and then compete are parts of the sacrifices, aside from all the money that is spent in order to pay the hotel, food etc. etc. Today, thanks to the help from APS and its president, who has focused all his effort and means for the benefit of this lovely sport so that these sacrifices can become more bearable. It’s been

Juan Caraballo, proud father, ripping the long board (1st place in Santa Catalina in the Longboard category)

16 years running the circuit in search of a title that was finally given to us. Now looking in retrospective I realize that it is not only the title that inspires us to continue these long and exhausting trips, the real reason that makes us continue this career is the love for this incredibly amazing sport. A sport that unites us all in a great family, the reason to continue driving kilometers, is to be with our great family that gets together for a family party 5 times a year!!! We all have ups and downs and in

moments we are driven by passions, but every time a competition ends no matter if it goes right or wrong, immediately I am waiting for the next one just to see and share with this family that surf gave to me. We all have our differences like any family, but deep down inside I know that each one of us enjoys the success of the rest. 16 years in which we have added up enough kilometers as to cross half of the Earths globe, but it has been worth it and each one of those trips. Thanks to APS and thanks to all the Panamanians that have made us feel like one of you! And God willing, we will continue seeing each other for many more years! Well said, Juan. Congratulations again to the father and son surfing sensations and way to represent Bocas del Toro on the national circuit. Stay tuned to the October issue of the Bocas Breeze for a piece by Longboard Rob on Juan Caraballo and what he calls (and accurately I would say) Bocas’ “first family of surf.”

The Bocas Breeze

Bocas Breeze Photo Challenge by Sharon Adam

The photo with the most votes by our readers in August was the Sloth, so in the spirit of giving the Bocas Breeze readers the vote: the Sloth wins. As readers have said, it epitomizes Bocas wildlife. Its in focus, we see the whole creature, and in its natural habitat. The Iguana and the Caiman were also great shots, in focus, showing their wonderful colors, surrounded by Bocas flora and fauna. The frog was also great shot, in focus, showing its wonderful colors, however I would have like to have seen it on some flora and fauna, the dolphin, although a great action shot and following the rule of thirds, was slightly out of focus, as was the howler monkey. The butterfly was a lovely well composed picture, but I think our readers went for the iconic sloth.

The Bocas Breeze

I discounted the birds, sorry if i was not clear in my instructions HOWEVER, the next challenge is Bocas Birds, so please send us your bird photos, I am always trying to improve my photography, one of the ways I do this is by going on You Tube and learning from the best, then giving it a go. I am changing the rules a little, now we are getting into the swing of this. Can I ask that photographers please remain anonymous (on the Facebook BB challenge, so its not a popularity vote) until we have decided. We will count up the likes and loves, and that will be the winner THEN, by all means GIVE THE PHOTOGRAPHER YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAISE AND DISCUSS.

Congratulations to Renee Proctor, winner of August’s photo challenge. Your Sloth has won you $10 in delicious treats at Super Gourmet. All submissions for the monthly photo challenge can be sent to photochallenge@thebocasbreeze.com

Concurso de Fotos del Bocas Breeze por Sharon Adam

WATER TAXIS by Arnold Greenburg They roar and splash and go from dock to dock, and make the sea an avenue with waves that sparkle in the sun, and even in the rain and wind, where dark clouds hover, the boats take folks to town and back to live their island lives, and standing by their motors, steering with their hands and eyes, it’s these little captains that keep this archipelago alive, that for a buck or two roar and splash and seldom flounder like we do on our boats inside and in the jungles of our minds search for a beach where we can stand and see the clear green water of our lives. Sometimes, I watch these little boats roar by, hopping as they rush like happy children splashing in the waves, and think of times before the boats when only natives lived their island lives, and the streets of Bocas town were dirt, and these islands were forgotten and far apart, not like now when these boats bring the islands closer, and as I watch another boat speed by remember the nursery rhyme row, row row your boat life is but a dream

The Bocas Breeze

THE PHOTOGRAPHER YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAISE AND DISCUSS.

MONTHLY HOROSCOPES This monthly horoscope column in no way endorses recommends suggests or in any other form infers actual fact. And under no circumstance should be considered valid information for the purpose of life decision making. Should you have any comments or suggestions regarding this column, please feel free to keep them to yourself.

ARIES March 21 -- April 19

Jupiter, astrologically speaking, the BMOC for the immediate future will falter and fail at the end of the month. This can leave you unprepared for complications regarding a looming nuptial. Beware of making bold statements, dangling participles, or phrases beginning with, sign here. Expect an improvement in your home life, specifically involving cat hair removal. Avoid anything in your refrigerator that is green, but only if when you bought it, it was another color. Your shoes know more than you think.

TAURUS April 20 -- May 20

Look out Taurus! Jupiter looms large in your first house this month exerting crazy energies in all directions. Expect the unexpected. I know that’s cliché, but the last time this set of circumstances occurred astrologically, a cancer friend of mine ended up breaking his leg. Now guess how, he tripped, wait for it, tripped over a bi-racial gay couple making love on a large platter of sliced pork, and where would you guess, in front of a mosque. My point, crazy energy abounds. So lock your doors, gird your loins, and for you lady cancers, expect at least one attempted breach by someone you previously considered a platonic friend.

GEMINI May 21 -- June 21

Hi Gemini, look for your sun sign to be rising high in the eastern sky the last week of the month. This will provide an opportunity for you, as is your nature, to shine brightly at a social event. You tend to be gregarious, but remember to temper your comments with good judgment, as many of your peers are not as clever, well read, or intellectual as you. Or maybe not, it’s just possible they do get the joke but don’t find it funny. Try chewing 8 to 10 sticks of gum simultaneously. This will greatly inhibit your sanctimonious smirk, and in turn soften the effect much of your high-minded chatter may cause.

CANCER June 22 -- July 22

The skill you have with your hands will be invaluable in soothing a small friend. You should thank the Northstar for guidance and lighting your way to all the potential goodness lying just below Orion’s belt. I recommend lighting a candle to St. Twinkie [the patron saint of public restrooms and parks], or at the very least buying dessert for a total stranger. Nearly forgot, in the 12th century St. Twinkie single-handedly drove all the invading Mazdas out of Belgium, while playing the banjo, and without firing a shot. Lucky number, deux.

LEO July 23 -- August 22

This column is created and written by John Schneider.

Mr. Schneider takes umbrage twice-daily as a preventative for ennui .

in the West, even more opportunity for advancement is possible. Caution is advised regarding new relationships, this doesn’t mean you can’t keep your mind open. Just remember to keep the rest of your business closed. For now your salvation hangs like a seagull above the sea; but requires hard work, patience and acceptance of necessary change.

VIRGO August 23 -- September 22

Oh Virgo, somewhere the sun shines brightly and the sky a brilliant blue, but not for you Virgo. Both Mars and Jupiter are in direct opposition to your immediate aspect. And for the present no amount of raisins, metaphorically speaking, added to your oatmeal, will improve your breakfast. I could be specific, but you know of which I speak. Come on, you know, that time when you were young and you did that thing. And you thought, hey this is really bad, even as you were doing it. Then you thought, well I got away with it, but damn I won’t do it again. Now you’re thinking, I’m older so what the hell. Don’t do it! You were lucky once, but once is all you get, so for now just shut up and eat your oatmeal.

LIBRA September 23 -- October 22

Buckle up Libra it’s about to get bumpy. Now I’m not saying you found an extra toothbrush in the bathroom or some unidentifiable towels in the hamper, but Venus is heading your way big time and she brings a definite change in your relationship status. This along with Alpha Centauri at her Zenith, means welcome relief from what for the last several months has been a desire to step back from what you sense as either anger, uncertainty, or at the very least apathy. Lucky number, they’re all better than the one you have now.

SCORPIO October 23 -- November 21

Your greatest asset to yourself and others is your fixed nature. This contributes to your ability to keep secrets and maintain lifelong friendships. Sadly relationships are another story, often punctuated by failed romances, missing cufflinks and having your car or bicycle stolen. There is hope, look for a Taurus, yes I know, but this time an age appropriate Taurus, then be patient and wait for the magic. Think globally act locally, brush regularly, vote and vote often.

SAGITTARIUS November 22 -- December 21

IIt’s time for a change, past time considering you’re down to your last friend, and them only, because they’re gathering material for an article entitled [to many opinions, not enough thought]. Sure you appreciated a job well done, but even though you don’t often have the skill to do it yourself, you become overly critical should it not be done to your high standard. If you continue to pursue this attitude you will end up back in the home for the criminally whiny. The stars say either relax or relapse, your call. Lucky color gray black, figures.

Hi Leo, you should feel very proud of yourself at present, as you took the initiative to make a change. Now with Cassiopeia disappearing

Have you ever wondered why other people have good ideas and you don’t. Well Capricorn the truth is those people follow you around and do the exact opposite of what you’re attempting. Remember that romantic interlude that required the use of a Crane and written permission from the electric company? The universe does, and has decided to cut you a break in the form of an unprecedented good idea, and a new girlfriend/boyfriend, your choice. Plus a copy of the home game [THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK]. So show your thanks, look up, smile and do three mental cartwheels.

AQUARIUS January 20 -- February 18

This is the Age of Aquarius, which by the way is something around 15 and slightly stunted emotionally. It’s time to get a pair, Aquarius, something in a 9 1/2 or a 10, extra wide with good ankle support, maybe in blue, green, gray or black. For flair, enlist the aid of Gemini, for balance a Libra. For transportation, nothing manufactured or assembled in Mexico. Seek out other air signs for fun, but the largest hairiest Leo you can find for marriage or as relationship material. Lucky number 27 mm.

PISCES February 19 -- March 20

Neptune is your ruling planet, but why am I telling you, Pisces, fish, Neptune, water, it just makes sense. But that’s just me, and I spent a lot of time looking up. Which according to the stars is not bad advice where you’re concerned Pisces. A chance encounter will prove lucky, but only if you’re in the right state of mind. You tend to be pessimistic, this won’t help. Try smiling more and doubting less, there is good out there if you’ll just give it a chance. Your lucky number, 2-for-1 between five and seven.

MONTHLY OVERVIEW OF ASTROLOGICAL INFLUENCES For those of you born in the northern hemisphere, myself included, September brings on chemical as well as emotional change in our collective psyches. The least of which is dragging out wool sweaters and the desire for pretty much anything made with pumpkin. September in effect turns the key in the lock of the subconscious, warning of impending shortages and the need to hoard and nest for the colder months ahead. Venus and Saturn converge early in the month and form an alliance as perfectly suited to one another as peanut butter and jelly. This alliance offers the opportunity to reach out to loved ones, dry cleaners, or devotees of obscure cleaning products. Take this opportunity to rethink your pantry, align your tires, or smile without provocation. Earth signs should focus on hearth and home. Whereas air and water signs should pay particular attention to lawn care and catching up on overdue bills. Remember, Bob for apples, Neil for retrieving loose change, and Holly for a decorative addition to any home.
