B UY Y OUR G IFTS L OCALLY ! P UT T HAT D OLLAR INTO Y OUR C OMMUNITY ! It has been nearly a year since I stepped foot into that box store some of us refer to as Wally World. No Marts for me as I have went on a quest to source everything as locally as I possibly can. The occasional light bulb will require a trip to one of those massive boxes with fluorescent lights and large amounts of wandering souls. But for me and my significant other, we remain afar. Holiday shopping is the hardest. In our country we are very giving, and thus, feel compelled to give many things to many people. This is not bad, it’s just that the “Everyday Low Price” will become somewhat enticing when shopping on this shoestring budget that many of us have. And we all have fallen victim to bargains that will eventually lead to a smiling face. But when we go to those box stores and buy these gifts that are so cheaply priced, there is a hidden cost. Most likely that gift you have saved so much money on has been shipped hundreds or thousands of miles. And that gift probably came from an assembly line where workers were underpaid, where they may lack many of the affinities that we enjoy, like abundant food, water, and shelter. More likely that gift has been made with components that are also very inexpensive, and all of those components have had the same type of supply chain. When we put that bargain gift on the teller’s checkout stand and when we pull out our preferred currency to purchase such, that money is going somewhere far away. Most likely a large chunk of that change is not going to the people whose labor furnished the gift. That money is probably going to Wall Street. Which, is fine, if you are an investor or like to support investors with a worthy cause. I may be going out on a limb, but I would much rather purchase as many gifts as I can from little shops around my community and around Southern Colorado. We are so blessed with thousands of

small businesses offering fantastic products and services that do good for people, our environment, and the whole of our community. Of course it is more difficult, it takes more time, it is probably going to be more expensive, but hey! Why not? Those hidden costs with inexpensive gifts from those box stores will someday be very visible to our society – the cheap meal, the cheap petroleum products, the cheap plastics, etc. Someday other costs will come into play (like sickness, environmental degradation, etc.), and then we will end up paying for those UNSUSTAINABLE CHOICES. These unsustainable choices that we make will eventually show their costs, to us, our children, and our future. Why not be a part of that change starting this Holiday season?

What is a Home Energy Tune-uP®? Most readers of That’s Natural! are energy-conscious and want to save money and reduce the carbon load that their home places on the environment. In many ways, a Home Energy Tune-uP® is much like a physical check-up that you would get from your doctor. Using various tools, a report is prepared to show the condition of your home from an energy use and energy conservation standpoint. Recommendations are then made for improvements, and the cost of those improvements and the benefit in terms of dollars are part of the report. Many energy tax credits will end in 2007. Energy Savings Tip: Weather Stripping and Caulking. This is usually the least expensive and most effective way to save energy when heating your home. Arts Education Creates “Mindful” Children As advocates for the arts in our community, it’s our responsibility to our children and community to understand the value of arts education in our public school curriculum. Did you know that arts education:

 builds a school climate of high expectation, discipline, and academic rigor that attracts businesses relocating to your community.  strengthens student problem-solving and critical thinking skills, adding to overall academic achievement and school success.  helps students develop a sense of craftsmanship, quality task performance, and goal-setting—skills needed to succeed in the

classroom and beyond.

 can help troubled youth, providing an alternative to destructive behavior and another way for students to approach learning.  helps all students develop more appreciation and understanding of the world around them.  helps students develop a positive work ethic and pride in a job well done. (Business Circle for Arts Education in Oklahoma,

"Arts at the Core of Learning 1999 Initiative") We owe it to our children to create a healthy environment for them to succeed, grow, and have the skill set to compete in the developing workforce. You can help by supporting and advocating the need for arts in your schools. Use the facts to convince principles and school boards that arts are valuable to the positive growth of our communities. Build a Lifestyle, not a Resolution The end of the year signals many different ends, but it also represents fresh beginnings. Improving one’s diet is often a popular resolution for many of us, especially after we step onto a scale following a season of dinner parties, family gatherings, and seasonal sweets. But don’t allow yourself to become trapped among those who create lofty resolutions to lose the holiday weight plus some. Rather than wasting your time with resolutions, resolve to build a healthier lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle is one that you have designed to fit within your life, whether you

work, go to school, volunteer, or parent, your healthy habits are ones that fit you. They won’t match anyone else’s exactly. More importantly, they are habits that you can do every day, every meal, or every temptation because they are achievable. Start by parking four parking spots further than normal, move up to adding a banana to your morning out-the-door routine, and graduate to limiting your consumption of desserts, soda pop, caffeine, and candy to special occasions, personal rewards, and gotta-have-days. You’re on your way! Resolve to build a lifestyle that Thrives!

DEAR CARRIE - Fill The Void Now Please! Dear Carrie: I am a very successful person, financially and in my community, but I still feel there is more out there. Is there? I have found the phrases “now babies” and “instant gratification” to be as most things in this physical world, FLEETING! I have lived a good part of my life filling the void with outside pleasures as I am sure most, if not all, have done the same. What this means is taking people, places, cars, substances, money, technology, careers, news, sports, religions, books, doctor visits, blaming… on and on and on and on, and acting as if this or these make you happy or whole. Then remorse sets in one hour to 3 days later and on to the next pleasure. I did this because I have always known and felt that there was “More out there” and I would not be happy until I found it, whatever “IT” was. This insanity stopped once I started to listen and feel what my head and body were saying to me, in the real and only NOW! What I

was being told from within myself was “YOU ARE NOT HAPPY” stop searching for outside happiness’ look and live from within. I then noticed my inner and outer dialog towards myself and others, YUK. Most of the thoughts that ran through my head, at this stage, were cut downs towards me and blaming of others. Examples from my inner dialog towards myself: Who are you to have a loving relationship, you’re fat, you shouldn’t be driving that car, nobody understands, you’re old, why is that person so mean to me, don’t lose this one you are too old to find another, don’t trust anyone because everyone is out to get you and you are not worth anything, knowing my luck, I am stressed, I am having an anxiety attack and WHY ME? Examples of my inner and outer speech towards others: That is not right do it my way. If only you would pick up around the house, buy me cards, throw me a surprise birthday party, drive better, be more emotional - then I would be happy. That person cut me off, they are out to get me, she is prettier, and she is uglier. Finally I started to

change my inner dialog. I write it, post it everywhere in my house and my car. I read it study it memorize it and when an old phrase comes up I immediately change the dialog to positive reinforcement. Please readers, stop talking or telling others stories for a month, and start listening to what was about to come out of your mouth. Then start to notice the feeling in your stomach. If the feeling in your stomach is icky what you were about to say is not your personal truth, it is a false belief from your past or someone else, nor is it positive for you. Now replace that with something positive towards yourself and give the person you were about to talk to a compliment. Make this your new habit and you will notice you are slowly filling that insatiable void! Please email your questions or comments about

“Dear Carrie” to: info@livefromwithin.com or mail to: PO Box 7767, Pueblo West, 81007. LIVE FROM WITHIN AND THRIVE!

Bodies By T As we live our lives and are consumed by how busy we are, it is easy to forget that there are people that have a special set of obstacles ahead of them. Three young gentlemen have found their refuge and hangout with a much-decorated bodybuilder here in Pueblo. Bodies By T has taken these handicap gentlemen and brought a new meaning to the word family. Tony Salas, Robby Frost and Joe Mestas are part of the family that found their way to Bodies By T. “No

one is judged here, I take the time to help everyone out because we’ve all been down that road. It’s not just a business down here at the gym, it’s a working community where we all help each other out,” says Terry Taylor, aka “T”. Tony Salas was injured after a bad car wreck on I-25. He has been active with nonprofit organizations, keeping busy. He says, “This place has changed my perspective on life.” Another fine example of overcoming obstacles is Robby Frost. He is limited to his wheelchair, but that doesn’t mean he has a limited outlook on life. “I’m not looking to be like anyone, but I wouldn’t mind having big muscles like T.” Joe Mestas, legally blind, doesn’t let that hold him back from seeing a healthy future

Robby Frost, age 21, in wheelchair getting ready for another show-makes him feel healthier; started in March

Joe Mestas, age 22, worked out in high school; doctor is proud of his weight loss; recommends Bodies By T for anyone looking for a little push

by eating right and training hard. “I have lost 23 pounds in the time I have been here at Bodies By T. He takes the time for us, and I would recommend him to everyone.” Bodies By T is not only a home of awards and honor, but contains all the necessary elements for success - in and out of the gym. The missing links to your Health Program Sun and Sleep Exercise and Nutrition play an integral role on our health, but other factors can enhance our vitality at no additional cost. For most of human history we have lived according to the constant once-daily cycle of light and darkness. Your body and brain sets their rhythm according to this cycle - it is called the circadian rhythm. The sun is our daytime portion of circadian rhythm. The sun is an amazing healing force. When the ultraviolet light from the sun hits our skin it goes through a

chemical process that produces Vitamin D. In the human body Vitamin D is the most potent hormone in your body. Vitamin D signals your body to produce hundreds of crucial enzymes and proteins thus creating abundant health in your body.

According to the latest research, Vitamin D can lower cancer rates, lower blood pressure and have a positive effect on your immune system( Creighton University 2006). So get in the sun in the early morning or evening and you too can benefit from it’s amazing powers. By getting a good night’s sleep

you can strengthen your immune system, release growth hormones, and yes, lose body fat. When you are not sleeping properly you can actually gain weight because it disrupts your delicate hormone cycle. The hormone that is released is melatonin. So by sleeping well and getting outside with the ultraviolet advantage you can increase your vibrational energy, and thus more vibrant health. Contributing Author Joe Alvarez

S EEK S TILLNESS “’Tis the season”, so “they” say. For many, it’s the season of stress. In a climate of labels, politically correct or incorrect, even our relationship to the holidays may create stress. Whether it’s “happy holidays” for you, including Hanukah, Solstice and Kwanza or simply Merry Christmas, winter holidays often include multiple stressors. Crowded shopping malls, over-spending, late night parties, family issues, and overindulgence in Wendie sweets and stimuStauffer lants can contribute to Golden stress. Holiday Flower “cheer” can cause Health an out-of-control Clinic adrenaline rush leading to mood swings, digestive 719-542-9210 disturbances and

exhaustion. Though stress may be unavoidable, we can offset some of its negative effects with enough rest, good nutrition, exercise and a positive attitude. In stillness, we find peace. In stillness, we can hear our intuition. In stillness, we know what is truly important and from a place of peaceful calm, before we say “yes”, to another luncheon or an obligatory party, we slow down, evaluate the situation and determine if “yes” is in our best interest or if, honestly, we need to say no. By listening to our inner wisdom we can avoid many of the physical warning signals our body may have to send to get our attention. By getting enough rest, we support our immune system, which

helps us avoid whatever is “going around”. By eating nutritious foods, which may mean avoiding more than one plate of treats, we are able to keep our balance through the season, avoiding mood swings and blood sugar highs and lows. Maintaining our exercise regime, our body can more easily burn off those extra calories we do indulge ourselves and we won’t have to struggle to get back into the routine once the holidays are over. Having and maintaining a positive attitude can be a challenge. Yet, the rewards make it worth the effort. For more information about Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction contact Wendie Stauffer.
