From the Series, “I’m Not Your Monkey!”

The latest and largest trend right now is weight loss. People may try all of the potions and fad diets that are out there; but no matter what they do there will never be a quick fix.

knowing that the consumer’s already vulnerable.

exercise, and control portions you’ll be healthy and a lot happier.

The sad thing about weight loss for many is that it is along term process and not something that can happen over night. So, we end up with people so desperate to loose the weight they’ll try just about anything.

They are aware of the psychological trip we are about to embark once we purchase their products. It’s so simple. We end up consuming the “diet” food thinking “Hey I’m on track so I’ll just have a little more.” It’s “diet” anyway. Right? Wrong. You’re better off just getting regular food and just learn how to control your portion sizes.

We need to start small, by introducing more fruits and vegetables into our daily lives. It’s just that simple. It is extremely hard at first because it is a lifestyle change. But it can be done, I know because I haveContinued lost 20onpounds and Page 2 kept it off for the last four months.

And the food industry has caught on to this. They’re smart. They see an opportunity and take it. So food industries start to put out more and more “diet” or “light” products,

Why put yourself through the anguish of going without? I don’t get it. It is not worth it, as long as you start to eat healthier,

Remember it’s a lifestyle change not a quick fix.

S O …Y OU W OULD L IKE TO B E A S OCIALLY R ESPONSIBLE I NVESTOR You have all heard the saying, “Keep it simple stupid”. (KISS) Well, that age old saying applies to investing as well. A lot of us get too wound up and confused with the complications of “where do I put my IRA, 401(k) and private savings money.” As the “Famed Philosopher”, Yogi Berra put it, “I don’t want to make the wrong mistake.” An easy way to avoid the wrong mistake is to build a simple plan by allocating, diversifying, and rebalancing. This is done is by taking a disciplined approach. Rather than pursue their goals with a strategic long-term approach, many investors try to time the market and chase investment returns, (the top investment sector in 2007 might be on the bottom in 2008) and they end up with little to show for it. There is a better way. Consider developing a balanced goaloriented investing strategy with a three- step process. ALLOCATE – assets across the major asset classes to help you pursue the optimal return for the risk level you are willing to undertake. DIVERSIFY – within each asset class to take advantage of different investment styles and various market sectors so strong performance in one area minimizes downturn in another. REBALANCE – periodically to ensure that your plan remains in synch with your risk tolerance and to maintain your desired alloca-

tions. A disciplined approach is easy to put into practice when you create and follow a strategic plan – one that can help you stay focused on your longterm goals. Keeping in mind that NO investment strategy including asset allocations, diversification or rebalancing can guarantee a profit or protect against loss. So… ”Keep it simple _ _ _ _ _ ” and be a smart investor! Investment in mutual funds involves risk, including possible loss of principal invested. You could lose money on your investment in any Fund or the Fund could under perform for any of the following reasons: The market prices of stocks or bond decline; the individual stocks in the Fund do not perform as well as expected; and/or the Fund’s portfolio management practices do not work to achieve their desired result. H OMEWISE : E NERGY S AVING T IPS Depending on the time of the year, homes can lose or gain a great deal of heat through the attic. In more than 50% of the homes that I inspect there are problems with insulation. There is often too little insulation or it is poorly distributed leaving bare areas. Attic access panels above conditioned living spaces are often not insulated at all or the insulation that was there has been pushed to the side. Fresh air changes are needed in a home and occur when doors and windows are opened or exhaust fans are operated. However, many homes have infiltration problems with cold air in the winter and hot air in the summer entering the house through cracks around doors and windows and in other places. All of these opening can add up to a fairly sizable hole in a house. Caulking and weather stripping need to be inspected and repaired periodically.

This month’s tips: 

Replace regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.



If you have a forced-air furnace, install a programmable thermostat and set your heat back eight to ten degrees at night or when you are away from the house. This could save you 10-20%. Replace furnace filters at least every three months, more frequently if needed.

P LANT P ROFILE - P ENSTEMON P ALMERI Want a plant that has everything? Intrigue, mystery, adventure, humor, even sex! Boy, do I have the plant for you! Penstemon palmri. For all of you penstemaniacs out there, and you know who you are, stop reading. This is a plant you know if not by its shear size (sooo big), then by the fact that it is one of the few fragrant penstemons. Yes, that’s right, fragrant (intrigue). You will bring this little gem home from the nursery, probably one in Canon City or Colorado Springs, put it in the ground and watch, and wait and wait and wait some more and say to yourself, “Hey I thought this thing was supposed to get huge?” (mystery). She duped us, let’s get her!!! You give me grief, send me obscene

e-mails, leave nasty messages on my voice mail, and I laugh! Oh ye of little faith! This plant is spending its first season in its new home setting down roots and settling in. “Okay” you say, “I’ll wait and see what it does next spring – ah man, I have to wait another whole season to see what this puny little thing will do?” Next spring finally arrives. You have mistakenly forgotten about poor little penstemon palmari. BIG MISTAKE! You glance out your garden window one sunny morning and you have to do a double take, because you don’t remember that large plant putting on new growth. You take a leisurely walk to look at it. OH MYGAWD! It’s penstemon palmari and its sending up a very tall flower spike. Two feet, 3 feet, 4 feet and

it still hasn’t stopped growing! Five feet tall! Look ma, no stakes! The flower buds begin to open, pale pink, very large. You stick your nose into one, because that’s what master gardeners do when they encounter a new plant. It is fragrant! She didn’t lie after all! It has a fragrance similar to baby powder, and what’s this? The bumblebee that just flew in to sample the nectar has just disappeared! A NOTHER I NCONVENIENT T RUTH A report chronicled by Dr. Pam Popper, Naturopath and Nutritionist, details that a significant source of global warming is the Standard American Diet (better known as SAD), and factory livestock farms. Raising livestock for a growing world demand for meat is a major emitter of greenhouse gases that contributes to climate change. According to a recent report from the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, livestock are responsible for 18% of greenhouse gases, measured in carbon dioxide equivalents—9% of carbon dioxide, 37% of methane, and 65% of nitrous oxide. It turns out that this number totals more than the emissions from automobile and other transportation. Methane has 23 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide has 296 times the warming potential.

Annual meat production is expected to double again by the year 2050. A dramatic and seldom talked about solution for global warming would be to adopt a program of dietary excellence—a plant-based diet, with no more than 10% animal products, which would be organic and free range. If we change the diet of Americans—we can have a much quicker impact on lowering greenhouse gas emissions than changing fossil fuel burning technologies (not to mention a better outlook and healthier bodies). Researchers at the University of Chicago concluded that dietary change in this direction would make more difference than trading in a standard car for a hybrid car—by about one half ton per year. G OOD V IBRATIONS Writing a series of articles about Sound Healing sounded easy enough. Yet, when I sat down to begin I realized there was little I could say that had not already been said by the Masters, of which I consider Jonathan Goldman. So, this month, I share with you some of his words of wisdom. “Let us conceive of the human body as a wonderful orchestra which is playing this marvelous symphony. When we are in a state of health, the entire orchestra is playing together. However, when disease sets in it is as though a player – the second violin for example – has lost its sheet music and begins to play in the wrong key and the wrong rhythm. First it begins to affect the rest of the string section. Ultimately this person causes the entire orchestra to sound poorly. Traditional allopathic medicine currently has several approaches to the problem

we have just described. One solution is to drug the violinist, sometimes to death, in hopes of getting this person to stop playing. Another more frequently utilized solution is to cut off the offending organ as occurs in surgery. But what if it were possible to give this suffering musician back their sheet music and let the whole orchestra return to normal? Analogously, what if it were possible somehow to project the proper resonant frequency back into the organ that was vibrating out of tune and harmony? When an organ or another part of the body is in a state of health, it will be creating a natural resonant frequency that is harmonious with the rest of the body. However, when disease sets in, a different sound pattern is established in that part of the body which is not vibrating in harmony. Therefore, it is possible, through use of externally created sound that is projected into the diseased area, to reintroduce the correct harmonic pattern into that part of

the body which is afflicted and effect a curative reaction. Through the principle of resonance, sound can be used to change disharmonious frequencies of the body back to their normal, healthful vibrations.” Jonathan Goldman, Healing Sounds: The Power of Harmonics. Training Corner This month I’ll be covering something you may face in the gym – “over-training”. This is when you over work you muscles – not allowing them enough time to rest. Examples include too many sets, too many repetitions, and now allowing time in between to rest the muscle(s). When you do these things, you are causing the muscle to actually burn itself. Another term for this is: “muscle cannibalism”. When this happens, you are basically reversing the muscle-building process. If you put your body into this state – you are wasting your time at the gym. Daryl Sena, contributing author, has grown up in the gym community and has trained with some of the best, including: James Sena, Richard Scalese, and Bill Clason.

H OME S WEET H OME ? Did you know that the average American spends 90% of their day indoors and that the air quality inside our homes and offices is worse than the air outside? The truth is - the way we have been building in this nation is anything but healthy. Poor lightning, bad ventilation, toxic paints, adhesives and a long list of other factors make where you work and live hazardous to your health. And when it comes to kids the news is even more unsettling. Only 7% of all high-volume chemicals have been tested for their effects on child development. Most common paints are loaded with ‘volatile organic compounds’ or VOCs. The compounds, that when inhaled, give you a headache or make

you feel sick or dizzy. One example is the ‘new car smell’ - the odor caused by the VOCs in the plastics, glues, carpets and adhesives. The good news is that times are changing. New building products and practices are being adopted that are easy on you, your family, the environment, and your pocketbook.

Things you can do:

 Buy only low or no-VOC products, such as paints and stains.  Buy or make your own ‘healthy’ cleaning products. The choices are many and the recipes are simple.  Read the ingredients. You do it with food and you can do it with the things use in your home or office.  The more you demand healthy products, the more manufacturers will respond!

Recent studies have even shown that students and workers in ‘green buildings’ have decreased Sustainable Building Concepts healthcare costs and “The Green Team” absenteeism and increased Renewable Energy - Green Building productivity!
