Ok, maybe it’s not Spring yet, but by the time you’ve read this, we here at Country Roots Farm are already thinking of spring, summer, and fall vegetables and other produce. D ID S OMEONE S AY “S ILVER L INING ”? I must admit. I am enjoying the experience of a real winter. Unless we’ve lost cattle or power, or worse, and our hearts go out to you, we need to look at this in a different light. It has been way too long since we’ve had an appreciable snowfall. I’m hearing a lot of grumbling out there people! Come on. Let’s face it. All this snow is great for bringing up the water table. When was the last time the word “drought” was brought up in a casual conversation? Winter watering hasn’t been necessary for those lawns and landscapes, right? Those of you who added all that sod (yuk!) and all those perennials and

trees to your property last season, should feel particularly blessed. Just look at all the dead plants you won’t have to haul back to Lowe’s for a refund this spring.

wonderful white stuff falling from the sky today. So look at the big picture. Every snow cloud has a silver lining.

Think of all those poor little baby grasshoppers that won’t be born in the spring due to the recent arctic blast. There will be a lot of sad grasshopper mommies and daddies, but who cares? Being a child of the sixties and a pacifist by nature, even I won’t miss the nasty little buggers chowing down on my precious perennials and expensive shrubs this season.

Peace and peace.

Lastly, when you’re enjoying a dizzying array of color in the form of wildflowers this spring, you can thank all of that

C REATION OF H EALTH — PART VI—M ATTERS OF THE H EART Remember, February is Heart Awareness Month. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in our nation. Diet and lifestyle habits are the culprits. Making dietary and lifestyle changes are the only solution—whether you have a genetic propensity or not. Start where you are and take small consistent steps every day to keep moving in the direction of health. As an important part of a healthy lifestyle, I recommend a “nutritional seat belt” called Juice Plus+® . Juice Plus+® is an easy, convenient, and affordable way to increase your fruit and vegetable intake. In less than a minute per day, and for much less than the cost of a Coke, Latte, or fast food lunch—you can provide protection for your cardiovascular system. Independent studies show that these improvements occur within 30 days or less.

cardiovascular function and blood flow. The homocysteine level is a predictor for risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and depression. Studies have shown that the daily use of Juice Plus+® for four weeks increased the folate levels and decreased homocysteine concentration in healthy volunteers. [Nutrition Research 2003; 23 (9): 1221-1228]. Another study done at the University of Maryland showed that the daily consumption of Juice Plus+® for as little as three weeks reduces the immediate adverse effect of high fat meals on blood flow compared to placebo [Journal of the American College of Cardiology 2003; 41 (10): 1744-1749].

These studies have shown that Juice Plus+® reduces homocysteine, and improves

R ECYCLING —I T A LL B EGINS Americans by far are the most waste-producing peoples in the civilized world. Yes, we are #1; we produce about 1,609 pounds per person per year and at 5% of the world's population, we generate 40% of the world's waste. Recycling make sense—this is how our ancestors survived! Viable alternatives for disposal of an enormous portion of the recyclable materials in the solid waste stream are the smart and responsible way to proceed. It just makes sense; most civilized people agree that we must be responsible for our actions. Why then is Pueblo not being responsible? It all starts with the reality that our landfill has about 30 good years left. That means we can continue to throw things away irresponsibly for thirty years before we fill our landfill up. It is a disgusting concept, isn’t it? The fact

WITH

YOU!

that our landfill has space is absolutely no excuse for not taking immediate and positive action to reduce the amount of solid waste we collectively contribute. So just how can we begin to do this? Three words…reduce, reuse and recycle…can begin to guide us on our accountable route to a healthy planet and a sustainable future. The reality is, if we don’t get a good program in place now and support it, the future generations of Pueblo will have to clean up our mess. Just what kind of legacy would that be? One way to get involved here is through action, call your city council members and insist that they not only support recycling, but that they assist in developing a permanent plan for it.

Begin to recycle! Currently you can recycle glass, aluminum, tin, paper and cardboard, so just do it! These sites are located at Rocky Mountain Steel Mill off of Abriendo (Pueblo), Pueblo West Metropolitan District at 109 E. Industrial Blvd, Civic Center Drive in Pueblo West and at the General Store on McCulloch in Pueblo West. Join Pueblo Recycles, a local grassroots organization promoting recycling and waste reduction through education and community projects in Pueblo County. We meet the third Saturday of the month from 12:302:00 in the Thurston Room at the Public Library on Abriendo. Think globally…act locally. Remember it all begins with you. FANFARE A New Section Dedicated to the Arts in Southern Colorado

J OEY G ONZALES , C OMING H OME Pueblo Performing Arts. Ah. It has a nice ring to it. As an avid lover of the performing arts, a performer, and friend to the performing arts community, I hope to enlighten the readers of “FANFARE” on all of the great opportunities there are to experience live entertainment in Pueblo. But why me? Isn’t there anyone more qualified? I guess that’s a fair question. I supposed like any good performer, a journalist or critic should introduce his self to the audience that he plans to address. And any credible source should identify their knowledge of a subject or field. So here I am. Hello. My name is Joey Gonzales. I was born in Pueblo Colorado, left at age two to New Mexico where I was raised by a dedicated stage mom who thought

TO

that I should experience every single possible opportunity of performing. Or perhaps she wanted a star in the family. I was happy to oblige and eventually gained over seven years of professional dance training, six years of vocal training, two years of modeling school, over ten years of professional training in acting and five years of studying the piano, violin, and clarinet. After all who really needs a childhood? Still, to this day I appreciate so much what Mom has done to mold me into the diverse performer that I am today. On this journey, I have had the pleasure of and studying with some of the industry’s greatest. Learning different styles of dance was a challenge for me so Mom put some extra financing into lessons at Escuela de Bulerias in Madrid, Spain where I learned the importance of body posture, hand positioning, internal rhythm, and

P UEBLO A RTS heel work. Working over the past twenty-five years in the professional world of entertainment has also been exciting. Today, as it does with many of my fellow thespians, theatre, dance, and music have become a major part of my life. I have an appreciation for all equally and an experienced and discriminating eye for quality performances. Do I plan to critique? A little. I think that the live experience of entertainment is good for the soul, in general, but I also believe that ensuring a performance of the highest caliber is good for the wise-minded consumer. I am still performing, still in the recording studio, still directing, still attending every show I can and still loving it all. My plans are to let the public know about the best opportunities to get out and experience Greater Pueblo area performances. I encourage you all to write to me as well.

The Veronika String Quartet will present the “Miracle of Mozart” on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Colorado Springs and on Sunday, February 18, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center Theater in Pueblo.
