Hello Welcome to our preview of FAKE Issue 006 - The Myths Edition. In this little taster we’ve selected some snippets from the next issue of FAKE Magazine; articles, illustrations, DIY culture and innovative fashion. We’ve got a broad range of visual treats, all tying in the myths theme in one way or another. A huge thank you goes to our FAKE family of contributors for their hard work on their additions to this beautiful magazine (of course we’re biased.) From a sparkling nest lined with silver and gold, he watches. Surrounded by his stolen treasures, keepsakes that echo with whispers of despair from those who have lost precious trinkets; sharp wits match sharp eyes as he watches. Black as night, his bruised yet glossy plumage feigns innocence as a broken halo flanks his sides. This guise of virtue however is fleeting; from behind pearlescent eyes a dark and mischievous nature brews, springing misfortune forth into the path of unsuspecting passers-by. Optimistic thoughts of rescue, for even the most superstitious of wanderers, should be granted after hopeful greetings of, “Good morning Mr Magpie, how is your lady wife today?� However only on deaf ears will any good mornings fall, for our solitary Magpie is one full of sorrow and not of joy.

One of the best holidays I ever had was in a caravan on the coast of Wales, when for each of the 5 days we were there it rained so much that Noah would have been off to get his tools out again, and so I can safely say that I do not need a 5 star hotel before I’m coaxed out of the country.

“art as a creative spectrum is ever expanding” For us myths have always been a strange topic, we are used to so often being subjected to various urban legends and old wives tales, that we never really stop to think about their origins. From your mother or father setting you to sleep by your bedside with an obscure tale at a tender age, or being somewhat persuaded into believing there is a dinosaur-like sea monster in the Loch Ness, it is apparent that we have a wild fascination with these stories and fables, which invite our minds to indulge in the paranormal. In this little lovingly written extract we’ll aim to do just that, we’ll focus specifically on myths and their origins, but more so we will focus on the street, and its myths in relation to contemporary ‘street art’ and why people partake in this paranormal activity. We will be inviting you to ponder and explore further than the mundane, and we’ll be guiding you through an adventure far closer to home than you could possibly have ever imagined.

Absentmindedly I cross my fingers on both hands, surrounded by tense bodies and hushed voices. It’s only after the last shot in this sporting final do I realise the curled digits are hurting from such force. Is this my superstition? Crossing my fingers for hope in somebody else’s triumph? Perhaps, but there’s more to superstitions than just one person’s faith for another.

V Curvy Many took to social media during the London Olympic and Paralympic Games to hail a new dawn of healthy body ideals, a brave new world where physical strength and fitness would replace our unhealthy obsession with thinness at all costs. Where this message had disappeared to after all the previous competitions was a mystery, but surely one we have now resolved. Four weeks spent appreciating the ethnic diversity and incredible physicality of international athletes is no match for a lifetime of constant exposure to images depicting a singular conception of what is beautiful; young, white, very thin.

As Sidney Froydor’s Balinese cat squeezed through the cat flap one evening, he got down on his hands and knees to lick up the day she brought in. There was a lot of licking to be done, as the area in which they lived had been experiencing an Indian summer for the last five days that had caused even the most freshly cleaned surfaces in the house to form a sticky residue. An ordinary person would not have noticed anymore residue than usual, but Sidney Froydor who looked no older than twenty-five, was no ordinary person. Using his tongue to rub away the newly brought in dirt carried in from beneath his cat’s paws gave him an unbelievable sense of satisfaction. The dirtier the floors, the dustier the corners, the damper the smell, the more his satisfaction grew. But though effective, his method of cleaning did not come without its flip-side.

Max stared in awe out of the window of the blue Volvo, taking in the countryside that appeared to stretch out endlessly into the distance. This would be his first time in Scotland, his first time abroad for that matter and he seemed determined to take it all in. It had been a long journey from London and they had set off at the crack of dawn. Max had been groggy with sleep, passing his father his small leather suitcase and keeping a firm grip on ginger bear himself. Ginger Bear came on all car journeys and this would be no exception. When they had stopped earlier for lunch in a small highland town for fish and chips in a charming local pub, Max had been fascinated by the highland cattle in the field opposite, with their long horns and shaggy ginger hair just like Ginger Bear’s coat.

THE TIME WE TRIED TO CREATE 10 MODERN MYTHS Words Paul Askew Illustration Nick Alston I was one of ten writers selected to create new myths. It had been decided that the old ones were no longer useful in modern society. We sat around a table, each with our myth ideas, and compiled a list of the best: 1. Thor, the Accountant Who Is 43 Years Old and Still Lives With His Father. 2. Zeus, the Cat Who Craps in the Gardens of Others. 3. James and the Perpetual Headrush. 4. Cautious Astrological Tracy. 5. Spider Vs Wasp Vs Civilisation. 6. Trunky-Horse. 7. David, Who Liked Keira Knightly A Bit Too Much. 8. Josie’s Bright Idea. 9. Medusa In The 21st Century. 10. Colin, the Disgruntled Singer-Songwriter. The ideas were handed out. I was given James and the Perpetual Headrush, a cautionary tale about dehydration, to write up. I had no idea what I was going to do with it. I tried to swap with someone else, but everyone was still annoyed at me for being dismissive of the list, and said I just had to deal with what I’d been given. As we were leaving, Tom was bragging about how he not only knew exactly what he was going to write for Cautious Astrological Tracy, he was also going to adapt it into a west end musical, as apparently he had connections. None of us believed him....
