SKCA 10th Year Souvenir 2005-2015 Message

St Catherine's Church 23 Melrose Road Sheffield S3 9DN Congratulations and Felicitations to all the

members of the

Sheffield Kerala Samajam (SKCA).

It is ten years since the Association came into being. Though, it does seem like it all happened only yesterday. A lot of time has elapsed and the Association has grown by leaps and bounds. It was imperative that this Association was formed. This has enabled all concerned to retain their identity the ethos and the culture of Kerala as you meet regularly to celebrate various feasts and occasions. I pray that all the hard work put in may bring forth fruit in abundance. May God bless all of you. Fr. Albert Savaille Parish Priest

T

here was something special about Clementine that nobody knew. It was there deep down inside her;

it was a mystery. An adventure lay ahead of her. It was an ordinary sunny day; everyone was outside enjoying the stroke of warm breeze. Tired of her never ending tasks, Clementine walked towards her tree house in the woods, the only place where she experienced the bliss of peace. The tree house was camouflaged by the lush green tress around it. Her disappearance into the forest often led to severe punishments from her step parents, but didn’t bother her at all. It was the only time; she could cherish faint memories of her parents. She never considered herself as part of the family she lived with. Finally, the day arrived – the first day of the spring. She had to do the final preparations for her journey; a journey that she hoped would lead to her lost family. Clementine had always desired for freedom, never wanted to be in that dungeon. She longed for her family, and thoughts of reuniting with her family kept her spirits high. The last lullaby sung by her mother was still in her memory. A mansion full of loving people often crept out of her mind. She still remembered and hated the large rough hands which had taken her away on a dreadful day. The terrifying stories about the deep forest had always stopped her stepping out of that area, but as a nine year old girl, she felt brave to cross to the unknown world of dangers. As she stepped out of the tree house, after packing supplies for the long journey, Clementine sensed more strength to her body. When moon and stars took charge of the skies, nobody in her cottage knew that somebody was leaving them for ever. Clementine had decided to leave the tree house the early next morning, and then she slowly drifted to sleep by the thought of her mum’s lullaby. The following morning, bird’s tweets woke her up, and without wasting any time, she untied Fortune, a pony - her best friend, and set off for her adventure. She was sure that the path in the woods would take her somewhere safe. After a few hours of riding, she decided to stop near a stream for a while to give Fortune a rest. Sitting below an oak tree, she munched an apple and it energised her body. She slipped her hand into the sack and carefully took out a tiny wooden jewel box. It had a thin golden chain with a pendant, a treasure she had secretly kept for years – only item from her family apart from her memories. Suddenly, her nostrils sensed the smell of fire and woke her up from thoughts. “Yes, somebody would be living nearby,’’ she said to herself. Excited, at the same time worried, she followed the path which took her to the source of smell. Immediately, her eyes caught a glimpse of a wooden hut and an old man who was burning cut branches of trees. His majestic face assured Clementine that he could be trusted. She was desperate for somebody to help her. Praying in her heart, she slowly rode Fortune towards him. On hearing a pony’s footsteps, he turned back. Clementine could see a shock and surprise in his face. “Are you alright? I have never expected a little girl here. Are you lost?” “Err….. Yes, I did,” she replied with a trembling voice and could not say any more words. He stepped forwards and stood by the side. “It seems you are on a quest” “How do you know that?” “So, I was right. I saw your sack and guessed it. Come inside, have a drink.” She was not sure whether to accept his welcome, but there was no there option; she needed a helping hand. She dismounted from the pony and slowly followed him. The hut was small with lots of paintings on the mud wall. As she was staring at one of the paintings, he extended the drink. “Now, tell me, what made you come here little one. You appear to be a brave girl.” “Thank you for the nice words. It has been long since I heard something good about me”. She slowly began to trust him and told him all about her ambitious journey. He listened to her story with great interest and admired her in his heart. “Do you recognise anything in this painting?” She turned to the painting and the man glimpsed a sparkle in her eyes. “Yes! It is!” “What is it my dear?” “I know that necklace and I have one EXACTLY like that!” she screamed in excitement. “Could you please show me your necklace if you don’t mind?” She carefully took the wooden box from the sack and held it out to him. “Yes, I was right again. I knew at the very moment I saw you first; you are the heir to the throne, Your Majesty. You look exactly like The Queen,” he kneeled down at her foot. Clementine was overwhelmed with joy and the thought that she would be reunited with family before her tenth birthday. “How do you know that? Oh! I forgot! Who are you and what’s your name?” questioned Princess Clementine. “I am sorry, Princess. I forgot to introduce me. I am Edward, former Chief of the King’s Guards. For the past few years, I have been living with such a grief that I could not save our little princess from the clutches of our enemies. Everybody thought that you were killed. I left the palace and the job to have a lonely life. I have been dreaming for all these years to hear good news about you – that you are alive. Now, I am seeing you with my own eyes. What else can I long for?” Soon, Edward converted his bedroom to a royal bedroom, with what ever he could get, to make it as comfortable as possible for the Princess. Clementine slept peacefully after many years of miserable life. Next day morning, when she looked out through the window, she saw Edward setting up everything for the journey. “Do you need my help?” “I am at your service, Princess,” smiled Edward, “you don’t need to worry about me.” A while later, both of them set off for the palace; Edward led the way for Princess Clementine and Fortune. Clementine was glad that she had taken the right decision and held her head high as they galloped to the palace.

ये ज़ज़न्दगी।

दो ददन के मेहमान हम

ये भलते हैं सभी।

हम और हमारा सबसे प्यारा तुम और तुम्हारा सबसे न्यारा। ये सोच थी हमारी कल तक

here have been so many reforms happening in schools and colleges in England after the new national

curriculum was published in 2014. As the changes are being implemented now and varies from school to school, it is practically very difficult to present the true changes happening. The highlight of the reforms is that national curriculum levels are abandoned and each school has its own system for monitoring and reporting pupil’s progress. An attempt has been made here to provide information about the key changes to the assessments and their reporting primary and secondary schools in

England.

Primary Curriculum English: Higher expectations on spelling, more poetry, more emphasis on grammar and punctuation. Maths: Many topics are started at an earlier stage than old curriculum (for example topics such as fractions operations, percentages and algebra are introduced in KS2). Students are expected to know all times tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4. Overall primary maths curriculum has been made tougher than earlier one to provide a good grounding for KS3. Science: New topics introduced in primary school are about rocks and evolution, emphasis on working scientifically and presenting the findings from enquiries. KS1 Assessments (marked by teachers)

Year 1 English: Phonics screening

Year 2 English: Reading Comprehension Test 1 (lower demand – text and questions combined) & 2 (higher demand – Separate text and questions)

Year 2 English: Paper 1 – Grammar, punctuation: short written task – includes handwriting, Paper 2 – Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary: Contextualised and stand alone questions;

Paper 3 – Spelling (20 words) in sentences.

Year 2 Maths Paper 1 – Arithmetic and Paper 2 – Solving problems and reasoning (No more level 3 test)

KS2 Assessments (marked externally)

Year 6 English: Reading comprehension; Paper 1 (Grammar & punctuation), Paper 2 (Spelling); No more writing assessments (assed by teachers internally on continuous basis)

Year 6 Maths: Paper 1 (Arithmetic) and Paper 2 & 3 (Solving problems & reasoning) – Calculators are not allowed in any of these tests. No more Level 6 maths test and timed mental maths test.

Year 6 Science: Sampling tests for 5 children from randomly selected schools – Paper B (Biology), Paper C (Chemistry) and Paper P (Physics).

A major change in the primary school curriculum will be the way in which test results are reported. Students who take the tests will receive their results as ‘scaled score’ as the national curriculum levels are no longer used. Actual scores will be converted to the scaled score with the help of conversion table provided by the department of education. Each student who does a KS2 tests will receive their results as:

Actual score

Scaled score

Confirmation of whether or not the student has attained the national standard. National standard is set to be a scaled score of 100 (roughly equivalent to 2b in KS1 and 4b in KS2, as a comparison to old curriculum levels); range for the scaled score has been reported as 80 to 130 – those who perform better than national standard will be awarded a scaled score above 100.

SKCA 10th Year Souvenir 2005-2015 Secondary curriculum Though mandatory end of KS3 assessments were discontinued from 2010, all schools formally assess their students at the end of KS3 to track their progress and setting target for their GCSE. As Ofqal requested all exam boards to strengthen the GCSE subject’s contents, schools plan their KS3 lessons in view of GCSE exams. GCSE is a two year course, but some schools may start it in Year 9, cutting short KS3 programme. However, school league tables consider pupil’s first attempt in exam, effectively ruling out schools entering students early for GCSE. Major GCSE reforms are as follows:

Linear exams (Single exams at the end of course, abandoning modular exams)

No resit options (except for Maths and English Language in November)

Grading scale changed to 9 to 1 replacing current grading structure, 9 being the top level.

Tiering to be avoided for most subjects ( English language and Literature – untiered; maths tired: Foundation tier (grades 5 to 1) and Higher tier (grades 4 to 9)

New GCSE exams for Maths and English in summer 2016, and Science, History, Geography and languages in 2017 summer.

Course work has been discontinued for many subjects. A level Course

AS (Year 12) and A level (Year 13) are to be made separate qualifications and assessed as linear exams.

Current grading structure retained: A* to E

Though AS results no longer contribute towards A level grades, it will be a measure of progress and teachers will use the AS results to set predicted grades for A level (important for university applications). As a summary, it has been reported that the curriculum and the assessments were designed to challenge the students and expected to bring a positive impact on quality of education in England; at the same time, some fear that the changes are so quick and frequent and teachers may not be ready for these reforms, but schools are striving to bring about the best outcome.

SKCA 10th Year Souvenir 2005-2015 Why Did We Need War? Why did we need war? Can't we live in peace? Your closest friend died in front of you, There are dead bodies all around you. Polluted air and trails of blood, the wounded in the soggy mud, the soldiers who came to take their shifts are going into hell, will they see their own funeral? "Quick boy's there's gas, quick boy's there's gas," Soldiers fumble to wear their masks. The air clogged with gas like a sea of green lime. In the distance many soldiers that failed lost their lives. Grenades drop and bombs explode, many fell to their death. Am I next to die? Your friend takes their last breaths in your arms, and close their withering eyes on you. The dead are littered all around you, Would I soon end up like that to? Many may lose a leg or be blind. Some may lose an arm and some may die. Some of them don't know if there are going to make it out alive. Others don't know if their families are even alive. In 1939 there was over 5000 men, all jolly and smart, but that was all long ago. This even happens today! The families that lost their husband, father, son, uncle, brother grieve for them. Why did we need this war? Couldn't we live in peace? Then there wouldn't have been so much grief!

SKCA 10th Year Souvenir 2005-2015 Work of Art and an Artist at Work. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good works he planned for us long ago” Ephesians 2:10, The Bible

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) an Italian artist is considered to be one of the greatest and most influential artists of all times. His artworks had tremendous impact on artists that came after. Some of his extraordinary works include ‘The Last Supper’ , ‘Vitruvian Man’ , ‘Lady with an Ermine’ and his famous ‘Self-portrait in red chalk’ which he drew when he was around 60 years of age. However of all his works, ‘The Mona Lisa’ has been acclaimed as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world". ‘The Mona Lisa’ was Leonardo da Vinci’s finest work. His masterpiece What if I told you that you are a ‘Mona Lisa’ and that you are meant to create your own ‘Mona Lisa’? In other words you are a ‘masterpiece’ and you are to create your own ‘masterpiece.’ In fact I would argue unless you know that you are ‘One’ you won’t be able to create your ‘One’. Allow me to explain. The greatest story ever told, that’s hardly every told God. Yes. God. The maker and giver of Life. And by Life I mean any and all matter and substance, seen and unseen, what can and can’t be touched. Thoughts, images, emotions, love, molecules and oceans - God. From atoms to galaxies - God. From the butterflies in your lush UK back garden to the mighty mountains of Himalayas in Nepal - God. All of it is his handy work. One of which is his Masterpiece. A masterpiece made so uniquely that angels looked at it curiously. The one thing in creation that was made with his imagery formed with the intent of being infinitely intimately fond. Humanity. God’s masterpiece is Humanity! I.e. You and I. You are God’s Masterpiece. You are unique. You are special. You are adored by God. You are the apple of God’s eye, beautifully created and there is no one like you on planet earth. And at the risk of sounding clichéd, look at your fingerprint!! God our creator is the one that assigns value and purpose to the created. Understanding the infinite value of your creator will make you consider your value and worth. It is this knowledge of your value in your being that changes your life. The outlook of your life. This understanding sets you up to find the purpose of your life. I’ve got some good news for you. You are a gift for this planet and you have a gift. You have an individual purpose…something to accomplish. You are a solution to problems and you have solutions to problems. Guess what??. There are books in you…There are albums in you…There is wisdom in you to solve world problems… orphanages to opened by You.. I want to leave you with this..Just as unique as you are, so is your relationship with God. It is in this relationship your individual purpose, task, or ‘good work’ is unveiled! Realise you’re a masterpiece to release your masterpiece! You are a Work of Art by God and an Artist at Work for God.

SKCA 10th Year Souvenir 2005-2015 PLANET MOOP It is the year 3034. We are on our way to visit Moop, a planet in a faraway galaxy. Our invisible spaceship flies for months, past planets, stars and galaxies, then we arrive. We open the door and look out, Moor is very hot. There is an alien behind a rock. It is tiny and silver. 'Help me!' Shouts the tiny, silver alien. 'Some plants from another planet have killed everybody but me. I need to escape! Suddenly we so the plants, quickly we got in the spaceship with the alien and flew away. Now the alien saw earth.

Dead House There was a Mansion…As I walked up the grassless hill I saw maggots burying their filthy bodies into emerald, green people. The door opened making a creak noise! I darted in. SLAM! The dark, wooden door shut! But how? I was flabbergasted. I sneaked my way upstairs with the blinding moonlight guiding me. I heard a groan. Could it be…. a zombie! Suddenly a wizard with a 96inch-long beard appeared. He whispered to me “Time is running out. Use this map.” Now he was lending me a map, but soon as I took it he vanished leaving a cloud of mist. In front of me there was a sign saying

Beware who come in never gets out alive. I felt intimidated. I

used the map, but the only way out was a dungeon. I was in the storage room, and the dungeon was 50 metres deep. I thought that “I’ll never get there!” When I was halfway there I met an abominable, mutant zombie! I felt Goosebumps. I quickly took out my sword, Excalibur brandishing it skilfully. The mutant stepped back with fear.

Before the mutant knew what I was going to do, I severed his head. Then blood spurted out rapidly from his neck leaving him to suffocate to death. CRASH! The door went. I felt petrified. The door slammed open and there stood a… some armour? I freaked out for a split second. I clad on the armour and set off. When I finally reached there I saw many ways of execution such as guillotines and hangers. There were coffins, bones, rotten flesh and heads! There were also cages with lion bones inside. All the sights were too gory for my eyes. As quick as a blink the same wizard shouted at me “Time is up!” After that fireballs billowed out from his palm and threw it at me. I rolled to the side. “Arrgh!” The wizard screamed angrily. He summoned a scarlet dragon! I, with all my might slayed the dragon. Now the wizard threw Zeus’s thunderbolts. I blocked it with my sword. His anger level raised. He tried to kill me with boulders, dinos, drowning me, black magic and cutting me. He was tired, so he fell to the floor. I slowly advanced towards him. Whilst I was going to kill him he screamed “

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” With a mighty chop, the deed was done. Finally, I escaped out of the wretched place or did I?

SKCA 10th Year Souvenir 2005-2015 Role of parents in a migrant society We may not be able to prepare the future for our children, but we can at least prepare our children for the future…

This is a beautiful quote that I always try to follow and recommend to all. In a place where we protect ourselves with warm clothing even in summer months, how much protection do we offer to our children during their formation years? How many of us can say that we spend more time for our children than for us? We are all good parents but do we really ask our children that? Parents here are multi skilled and most households have both parents working at different shifts and time patterns. Some have the luxury of being at home every day while others are lucky to travel to different locations as part of work. Parents can be classified into a few different categories 1. The ones who tirelessly work at any given opportunity to make more money (assumption – Its for the kids future and we are here for that reason) 2. A group who work so hard during work and are really tired to do anything at home (assumption – I am tired today; the kids will understand. Its for them that I work so hard) 3. The ones who travel most of the time and does not have enough time at home (assumption – I will spend the available time with my kids when I have it) 4. Parents who have the time and means to spend time with their children but are not confident or conscious about not being with them (assumption – They are having fun already. I need to meddle with that) The children of today are not so naïve. They are quick to grasp onto things. We may pride ourselves in how well our child can handle a computer or a play station. Do we really check to see if they can read and write more efficiently? In a place where all children are excellent, we need to safeguard and guide them to become first among equals. We buy them toys and gifts to compensate for the time we cannot spend with them. Do we judge them with that temporary moment of happiness? They are busy with their games and hobbies and looks like they do not need the time with us. Do we glance at things they do, momentarily lifting our eyes from our smart phones whilst sitting idly at home? A child not coming to a parent to spend time is not because they do not want to, its based on what they been brought up as. They always see their parents busy with work and are taught not to disturb them. A child needs emotional bonding. This does not come with showering gifts and praises. You can give your child money but it does not teach them to earn it. Money, like respect can be easily lost when not dealt with properly. We are proud of their new accents and even happy with them not speaking their mother tongue. “Oh, my child cant converse in his mother tongue.. he is fluent in English. We only speak English at home.” Yes, it is good to help the child build on a language. The point we forget is that we are now moving that child away from their heritage and culture. The island that we live in, caters to a large and diverse group of people. It has welcomed people of many creed and religion with a warm heart. While we teach our children to integrate into this society, we lack the hind sight to ensure that they need to be proud of their heritage. There is no shame in teaching our children about the land from where we came or the goodness it contains. As two sides of a coin all nations have their share of up’s and down’s. It is our responsibility to impart to them the goodness of both nations and inculcate the habit of choosing the best from the rest. We stand loyal to the nation who welcomed us with open arms and while we do that, we need to safeguard the culture and tradition that has made us what we are now. That which made our parents to bring us up as responsible and morally responsible citizens. Our children do not have the privilege of having their grandparents living with them and share the joys and nostalgia of times, when people had time for each other. Having a common passport does not give the right to be part of a given society. It’s the hard work, dedication and proper direction that will enable a better integration. And most of all, a mutual trust for all. We need to teach our children to trust their instincts and give it flight. We also need to encourage them to add measures and counter measures to their thoughts and finally outweigh each thought with a spirit of reasoning. Our children should know that dignity and integrity is better than pride and power. They will need to understand that respect is hard earned. Its easy for them to be filled with a false sense of security and be dragged into a maelstrom of guile. As parents we need to encourage them to partake in our daily life. There should not be room for egos in a family. We need to accept the fact that parents are not always right, yet be unbending when they are wrong. A parent will need to be patient and listen to their children. This encourages them to be more open to communication. Parents will need to cultivate the seeds of reasoning in them without breaking the independence of their thoughts. A rational mind and a free spirit can do wonders to a child. It does sound contradictory but the art is in blending both with an objective to achieve. We need to teach them the skill of guiding their life with meaningful accomplishments and move away from procrastination. In a time, where we left our parents behind in our land of birth, chasing our careers; we need to pause and think about our children too. We can’t leave them behind, that’s not us. Our parents took their time and effort to give us a good education (that’s why we are here). They sacrificed almost an entire part of their good life to ensure that we have a better future. Whilst doing that, they almost single handedly looked after their own parents without a hint of hesitation. We got an opportunity to migrate to an arguably better land and we left behind our earlier generation without a shadow of guilt. If we did, we did well not to show it. We now have two generations who depend on us for guidance, advice and assistance. Money cannot replace the love and affection we can provide. And yes, our children are watching and learning from us. On the occasion of the wonderful 10th SKCA anniversary, let us, the parents take a pledge to strive for the upliftment of our children in our adopted country and ensure that they are worthy of mention in the annals of our history. If I were to write a summary of what needs to be done, I will readily use the following quotes to reflect my thoughts

“The best inheritance a parent can give to his children is a few minutes of their time each day.” - M. Grundler “Lucky parents who have fine children usually have lucky children who have fine parents.” - James A. Brewer

SKCA 10th Year Souvenir 2005-2015 A review of Assassin’s creed

A

ssassin’s creed is a game franchise that is available on many platforms in game consoles e.g. Xbox 360, PS3 Nintendo DS and on PC. The first game was released in 2007 and since then a multitude of sequels and spin offs have been made. Out of all the games my favourite would have to be Assassin’s creed II. The plot centres around a young man called Ezio Auditore who lived in Italy during the renaissance era. His family was betrayed by a man called Uberto Alberti and sentenced to death. Uberto was part of an organisation called the knights Templar. Their main goal is to ensure world peace by controlling and manipulating the freewill of others, to do this they would need to use mechanical objects called The Piece’s of Eden which are hidden around the world. Due to the loss of his family, ezio feels as if he needs to stop the templar’s, to do this ezio uncovers the mysteries of his families’ lineage and discovers he is part of an organisation called the Assassin’s. The Assassin’s main goal is to prevent the Templars controlling the world by preventing them from collecting pieces of Eden which is used to control people’s freewill mentally and physically. Ezio’s missions lead up to killing Rodrigo Borgia also known as Pope Alexander VI for he is the one responsible for killed Ezio’s dad and two brothers. I enjoy the Assassin’s creed franchise because it teaches the player historic facts and figures who were around during the time where the games are set. For example in Assassin’s creed II you will learn about the famous Leonardo da Vinci who was an inventor, an artist/ painter. In the game history Leonardo da Vinci was friends with Ezio Auditore. I also like the game because it has an open world to explore in Italy during the renaissance era when Italy was the most amazing place to visit because it had transport, jobs and clothes that what was pretty to look at. When you play the game you do missions which is part of the main campaign but you can do side activities for example like beat a race or find treasure in different parts of Italy for example Venice, Florence etc. The disadvantages of this game is that the game is meant for 15+ due to it having sexual content , swearing and violence that isn’t suitable for players who are below the age of 15 years to be playing this game. The game can become quite repetitive and so does become boring after a while but other than that the story and atmosphere is excellent and so I would rate it 8 / 10.

SKCA 10th Year Souvenir 2005-2015 A review of the telltale the walking dead T

he telltale The Walking Dead is a quick time action game which is in many platforms e.g. Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox one PS4, PC, Android and IPhone. The story is tailored by the choices you make during the game. The game is realised in seasons. In each season there have been five episodes. In the first season of five episodes the main protagonist you play as is called “lee Everett” who is a convicted murderer. The game starts with lee coming out of the city in a police car with an officer. Lee and the officer start to talk for few minutes then a walker (zombie) comes out from nowhere and hits the car causing the car to flip off the road into a forest. You awaken to find you are still alive. When you get of the car you are still in your handcuffs so you try to get keys from the officer who looks like has been killed so that you can free yourself. When you finally free yourself the officer comes back to life as a walker (zombie) you see a shotgun and you shoot him. The gunshot alerts walkers (zombie) in the vicinity and they all home in and try to eat you, this forces you to run across the forest until you jump over a fence. After, you find yourself in a house, you go inside to find out if there are survivors inside but you meet a little girl whose name is “Clementine” and she was in the tree house alone so you decide to look after her until you find her real parents. After you meet Clementine you and Clementine start to go on your adventure to survive the Zombie apocalypse. I give this game a 9/10 because the game forces you to think about the actions you choose as even the tiniest action will likely influence the story in a great way. By the end of the game you will become very much attached to the characters as you are forced to survive together through the horrors of the zombie apocalypse. The only downsides to the game is that there are some repetitive things e.g. you will have to talk to almost every character in the game and be forced to choose really hard choices such as who to save in the game but overall it is a good game.
