Message from a distant past? by Emma Fierro

To some, the rock located outside of George Johnson’s 820 Grandview Avenue home in Sunnyside atop Harrison Hill may be nothing spectacular, but to Johnson, it is a unique connection to early American history. Long before white settlers cast their eyes on the Yakima Valley, the area was home to

Emma Fierro/Daily Sun News

George Johnson sits next to the peculiar rock he obtained from a construction company excavating a site on the south side of Harrison Hill. The various lines on the surface of the rock, Johnson believes, represent three of the Pacific Northwest’s very important rivers.

Native American tribes and Johnson believes his rock is a piece of their rich history. Johnson received the rock from a housing construction site on the south end of Harrison Hill and there seemed to be nothing special about the boulder. But when Johnson took a closer look at the rock, he noticed a series of unusual lines. These lines appeared to have been chiseled; they were too straight and purposeful to be coincidence. Seeking confirmation that the lines were too perfect to be made by accident, Johnson turned to a friend he knew had some knowledge of Native American history. After careful examination, Johnson’s friend agreed. see “Message” page 3

Some may not think twice about the lines on this rock found outside of George Johnson’s Grandview Avenue home, but Johnson sees order and precision in their creation. The larger, horizontal notch, Johnson believes, may be a representation of the Yakima River.

Sunnyside receives clean audit The city of Sunnyside’s financial reports for Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2009 were audited by the Washington State Auditor’s Office and its findings were recently released, giving the city a clean bill of health. In the report, the auditor’s office stated the internal control over financial reporting had no significant deficiencies and no material weaknesses. The same was true of the city’s federal funding programs. The city of Sunnyside reported receiving more than $23.9 million in revenues. More than $10 million of those revenues were in the general fund and another $4.4 million in revenues was reported in the street fund. Operating expenditures reported amounted to more than $15.7 million in 2009. The majority of those expenditures (more than $6.6 million) were spent on public safety. Nearly $200,000 was spent on crime prevention. Another $837,306 was spent on ambulance services. The city’s coffers in 2009 began with just more than $8 million and ended with about an additional $100,000. Law enforcement was appropriated more than $2.65 million in 2009. On a positive note, the city did not spend see “Clean audit” page 3

Flu shots offered at fair in Yakima

Emma Fierro/Daily Sun New

Downed hops It was an unusual work day this past Tuesday for workers in this Snipes Pump Road hop field after hop poles toppled like dominos from the weight of this past weekend’s rain. Workers hurried to harvest the downed hop field with the aid of forklifts. With the hop flowers maturing around the Yakima Valley, the hop harvest is in full swing and the hop trucks are traveling the back roads of the valley rushing to get their cargo into the processing plant. The Yakima Valley produces about 75percent of the hops grown in the United States, and harvest should continue through early October. Rod Smith/Daily Sun News

YAKIMA – The fair starts in just a few days, but the flu season has already arrived in Yakima County. This year the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends flu vaccine for everyone six months and older. Those heading to the fair are taking the first step toward vaccination, getting to a place that offers it. Health officials urge those at the fair not to miss the perfect chance to get seasonal flu vaccines. Stop by the flu shot and education booth at the 2010 Central Washington State Fair. “Everyone is recommended for vaccination because flu is unpredictable,” explains Ruth Rosenkranz, Immunization Specialist for the Yakima Health District. “Even healthy children and adults can get the flu and it can be very serious.” The flu booth is sponsored by the Vaccine Preventable Disease Coalition of Yakima County, Yakima Regional Medical & Cardiac Center, and the WSU Nursing Program. Education will also be provided for seasonal flu and other vaccine preventable dissee “Flu shots” page 3

Adjustments being made with fewer school nurses by Emma Fierro

With every layoff comes the need for adjustment and it was no different when the Sunnyside School District lost two school nurses earlier this summer. Previously, the Sunnyside School District employed one school nurse for each of its eight schools, but with the laying off of one nurse due to state budget cuts, and the resignation of another, the remaining six nurses are

learning to balance schedules and share buildings. But with six nurses and eight schools, some schools must do without. Only Sierra Vista Middle School and Sunnyside High School have a nurse available Monday through Friday. The five elementary schools and Harrison Middle School share nurses and this is where things can get a little complicated. Pioneer Elementary has a nurse Tuesday through

Thursday, while Sun Valley Elementary has one Monday through Thursday. Meanwhile, Outlook Elementary and Chief Kamiakin Elementary both have nurses Monday, Wednesday and Friday while Washington Elementary gets their nurse on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. As for Harrison Middle School, they get their nurse each day of the week except for Wednesdays. “It’s not the ideal situation,” conceded Sunnyside

School District spokesperson Curtis Campbell. “But the nurses are flexible enough to cover each other if there is an emergency.” Assuming the traditional caregiver’s role at these schools while the nurses are away is the office staff. The office staff has been trained to manage the average bumps and scrapes young children often obtain in casual recess play, but Campbell says it helps that, for the most part, the schools are

very close together. If a more pressing health matter occurs and a nurse is needed, the other nurses can easily travel to the school. The need for this sudden change is the result of recent school budget cuts. As it stands, said Campbell, the state of Washington does not provide sufficient funding to cover the cost of school nurses within the districts. But Sunnyside School District is not alone in making do with a limited number

There is little doubt that Harrison Hill would have been a fine resting place for roaming Native Americans. Its elevation would have given a perfect view of the Lower Yakima Valley, and the route its river cuts southeastward to

the Columbia. The historical authenticity of the small boulder has not been confirmed, but Johnson has recently reached out to the academic community to seek further opinions on the rock that has been cemented in front of his house.

But without any evidence to the contrary, Johnson is pleased with what he believes the rock could be: a message from a very distant past.

o Message continued from page 1

There was something unusual about these lines. And what’s more, the friend believed he knew what they represented. Together, on the top of the boulder, there are three lines and Johnson believes they may be a map of three impor-

tant rivers: the Yakima River, the Columbia River and the Snake River. But upon further examination, Johnson and his friend also discovered what may be rays from a sun also carved into the rock.

o Clean audit $129,217 of those funds. The law enforcement appropriations are the largest among the funds budgeted for the year. “Miscellaneous general government” was appropriated with more than $1.5 million in the 2009 budget. The city of Sunnyside in 2009 was awarded two community development block grants totaling $223,547 and

a federal award for gang resistance education and training in the amount of $72,743 was also noted in the auditor’s report. Another federal award presented to the city in 2009 totaled $654,045 for the city’s airport improvement program. Those funds were awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

All told the city in 2009 received more than $4.2 million in federal funding for safety, drinking water, highway planning and housing. After reviewing the city’s documentation and financial reports, the Washington State Auditor’s Office concluded Sunnyside is in complete compliance with federal laws and regulations.

eases at the fair booth. Those wishing to put their skills to the test can “Take a Shot at Vaccine Preventable Disease” by shooting giant germs for a chance to win prizes. “We really want to stress that preventing the spread of flu is up to all of us,” comments Rosenkranz. What better place to do that, than at

of health care professionals. Grandview School District employs two school nurses and three CNA’s for its six educational facilities. Meanwhile, Mabton’s two school buildings share one nurse, as does Granger’s three schools. Prosser, on the other hand, employs two nurses and three health room assistants for its 2,900 student body and five buildings. This new format at Sunnyside School District has required some adjustment from the district that once had enough nurses for all of its school buildings, but Campbell says the change has gone well. “It obviously puts extra pressure on the nurses,” he says, but with the close proximity of most the schools and the office staff trained to help, the necessary adjustment has been made.

this huge community event? The booth will be located in the southwest corner of the SunDome during the fair. Seasonal flu shots will be available every day from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. to anyone age 9 years and older. The cost of the shot is $30. Cash, check, or Medicare Part B will be accepted.

The Port of Sunnyside commissioners on Monday of this week approved a revised meeting schedule presented by Executive Director Amber Hansen. During the months of November and December the Port of Sunnyside will hold its meetings at 5:15 p.m., rather than 7 p.m. as originally planned. The vehicle thieves target most often in Washington state is the 1992 Honda Accord, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s (NICB) annual Hot Wheels Report for 2009. Washington is a hotbed for car thieves, traditionally ranking high in auto theft over the years. In fact, Yakima ranked sixth-highest in the nation for auto theft rates in 2009, down from third in 2008. Spokane jumped to 18th in auto theft last year, up from 35th in 2008. The Seattle-TacomaBellevue metro area fell from 26th in 2008 to 37th in 2009. Last year, 26,684 vehicles were reported stolen in Washington, a 15.8 percent drop from 31,681 in 2008. That’s still an average of 73 stolen vehicles per day and three vehicles an hour. While the decrease in thefts is encouraging for drivers, auto theft is still a costly crime vehicle owners pay for through their insurance premiums. “Consumers literally pay billions each year for auto theft,” said Karl Newman, NW Insurance Council president. “The cost to replace stolen vehicles and repair those that are recovered is reflected in your insurance rates.” Vehicle theft is the nation’s number-one property crime, costing an estimated $7.4 billion each year. In 2009, auto theft cost more than $180 million in Washington state alone. The good news is vehicle owners who have optional comprehensive coverage

Grape waste may be utilized in port’s fields Port of Sunnyside Sprayfield Manager Gary Holwegner on Monday, Sept. 20, told the port’s commissioners of a new product being explored for use in lowering the ph levels of its alfalfa fields. The port, he said, has been using gypsum to draw out salt from the soil. The lowering of ph levels, he

said, is necessary for plant establishment. Once the plant has had the ability to establish itself in the soil, it will be healthier. Holwegner told the commissioners on Monday that an alternative treatment has been found in grape waste. The product, however, must be considered by the Department of Ecology to

establish whether or not there are any unwanted properties in it that may threaten the port district’s water application permit. “We are currently in the analysis process,” he stated, saying it is his hope the use of grape waste for the purpose of lowering ph levels in the soil will also be more cost effective.

Forever in our Hearts

A million times we needed you, A million times we cried, If love alone would of saved you, You would have never died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place, No one can ever fill. A light from our household is gone, A voice from our love is stilled, A place in our vacant home, which never can be filled Some may think you are forgotten, through on Earth you are no more, but in our memory you are with us as you were before. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, A part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Your precious memories are for keepsakes, with which we never part, God has you safely in his keeping, But we have you forever in our hearts. Love, your sister Elvira, Mario & family.

OUR VALLEY ...A LOOK AT OUR VALLEY & FAR BEYOND

Metropolis is now an attraction for curious tourists. T h i s monum e n t erected near the remains of Metropolis’ hotel tells the story of Metropolis’ disastrous attempt at settlement. To reach Metropolis, travel Northwest on Eighth Street out of Wells, Nev., then take a “right on the first good gravel road.”

Nevada is littered with old, abandoned mining camps. This camp, located outside of Beowawe, was likely abandoned in the 1960s or ‘70s, but their ruins remain a testament to the unpredictable lives of Nevada’s miners.

While exploring Nevada’s ghost towns, graves and abandoned mining camps, tourists can enjoy some of Nevada’s wildlife. It is unknown whether these horses are domesticated, but Nevada boasts a high wild horse population.

Visitors to Northeastern Nevada can explore the ruins of Metropolis’ Lincoln School. The town once boasted a population of 700 people, but its life as a town only lasted from 1910 to the late 1930s.

Traveling the many dirt roads is highly advised when traveling through Nevada, but steer clear of abandoned mines. This mine was blasted (notice the hole at the top) to prevent people from entering it, but many remain open and host any number of terrors from caveins to wild animals.

The Maiden’s Grave Cemetary is named for Lucinda Duncan, an elderly pioneer who died on the wagon trail as her family emigrated to Nevada in 1863. Duncan’s grave is marked by a large white cross, but many early graves are discernable only by a ring of rocks around the grave.

The Maiden’s Grave Cemetery north of Beowawe is located on a low hill overlooking the Lamoille River. Graves located in this isolated cemetery range from 1863 to 2006. Everything from the lone pioneer to longstanding Beowawe families are interred here.

The only remains of the once hopeful town of Metropolis are the school, a hotel and a cemetery. Even the headwaters of the Lamoille River have dried up around this desolate Nevada ghost town.
