Let’s face it: the news can get you down, especially in an election year. ZACH Theatre has the perfect summer antidote—two seriously entertaining comedies. Martin Burke stars in the riotously funny British comedy One Man, Two Guvnors (June 1-26). Set in the Swingin' Sixties, it promises laughout-loud slapstick, with a live Beatles-era band accompanying. You can also catch one of the fastest-rising stars in Austin theater, J. Robert Moore, in the one-man play Buyer and Cellar (June 8-August 14). Moore plays Alex, a struggling Hollywood actor who takes an outrageous job working in the underground showbiz collection of Barbra Streisand at her Malibu house. ZACHTHEATRE.ORG

The Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC) hosts its fifth annual runway extravaganza, Art Bra Austin, on June 4th at the Palmer Events Center. Seventy-two sensational pieces of wearable art will be modeled by 72 extraordinary BCRC clients and auctioned, with all proceeds benefitting BCRC. Art Bra Austin is a fun, glamorous event that has raised more than $1 million over the past four years. ®

Rock Rose at The Domain
The newest section of The Domain, Rock Rose, is the first entertainment district outside downtown. Featuring an art-infused streetscape, Rock Rose brings a local focus with funky, Austin-original businesses such as Birds Barbershop (with a kitschy Palm Springs design); Raven + Lily’s fairtrade fashion for women; and Weathered Coalition, an apparel and apothecary shop for the modern man. There’s also a strong dining and nightlife scene, with East Side King Thai-Kun, Mia Italian Tapas & Bar, Sway, Tarka Indian Kitchen and The Dogwood. Bars such as Jack & Ginger’s Irish Pub, Kung Fu Saloon and Lavaca Street Bar are sure to keep the fun going late, along with rooftop bar 77 Degrees and dance club The Rose Room.

The buzz in Dallas this summer is tantalizing. Prepare to sizzle!

Opened in historic downtown McKinney in June 2015, Sugarbacon Proper Kitchen [1] features New American cuisine with Texas undertones. Topping the menu is, of course, a dish that shares the restaurant’s name. Chef Jon Thompson and co-owner Johnny Carros oversaw the transformation of an 80-year-old filling station into a highly anticipated restaurant, putting it on the fast track to a Dallas top 10 spot in its first six months.
Craft brewery openings are taking Greater Dallas by storm. Producing a wide range of lagers, ales, ciders, seasonal brews and IPAs, most offer weekly tours and tastings along with events like yoga classes, pet adoption days, trivia contests, bike races and live entertainment. Among the better known are Deep Ellum Brewing Company, located in the edgy entertainment district near downtown Dallas, and Lakewood Brewing Company of Garland. Denton is home to Audacity Brewhouse and Armadillo Ale Works, popular with college students and Denton’s arts community. McKinney has two craft breweries, the Bavarian-style Franconia Brewing Company and rustic TUPPS Brewery. Also in the area are Grapevine Craft Brewery (Farmers Branch), Cobra Brewing (Lewisville) and Bishop Cider

The Carros-Thompson team started 2016 by generating even more buzz with the announcement of two new ventures. First up, Butcher Board, next to Sugarbacon and offering hand-carved sandwiches highlighting smoked and braised meats. Guests can get to-go orders, sit inside or on a front patio that features a pair of vintage gas pumps. Up soon, Sugarbacon 2, opening in Dallas' Lakewood area. (Look for it late summer or early fall.)

Now that the classification of “vintage” includes the 1980s, popular ‘80s video arcades and the games that populated them are enjoying a resurgence, with gamers hoping to reclaim, or at least relive, the fun of their teen years. Free Play Arcade [3] opened in Richardson late last year. It features 60-plus vintage video game consoles and pinball machines. The $10 admission fee provides unlimited play throughout the arcade. Also paying homage to video games past, present and future is Frisco’s National Video Game Museum. The museum offers 20 exhibits, artwork by local artists, rare items and an arcade of 40 iconic machines.
Pastry chef Buddy Valastro , famous for his TLC show, Cake Boss, opened his first Texas bakery in March. Carlo’s Bakery in Dallas' Preston Center is the 13th of Valastro’s bakeries in the U.S. And yes, the store sells the same kind of to-die-for specialty cakes fans drool over on his TV show. This summer marks the opening of the Cork & Pig Tavern, co-owned by local chef Felipe Armenta and Hell’s Kitchen Season Two runnerup Virginia Dalbeck. West 7th also hosts outdoor events, including Bites and Flights (May 15) [1] featuring sample tastings and sips from local restaurants. June 18, the third annual pARTy on Crockett has live bands, live performers and an interactive art exhibition that turns you into an artist. At the Chalk Art Festival (Aug 20), see elaborate chalk art designs by talented professional street painting artists. Get there early and watch the pieces evolve!

Gus, the baby gorilla, [3] is one of the star attractions these days at the Fort Worth Zoo . The little guy is the first western lowland gorilla ever born there, an important milestone for the critically endangered species. Small humans can be spotted at the zoo’s newest attraction, the Safari Splash. The zero-depth 14,000 square-foot area is equipped with slides, water cannons and a designated toddler play area.

Now entering its 102nd year, the San Antonio Zoo continues to evolve its look and exhibits. The latest is the interactive giraffe feeding experience. South Padre Island Worth a trip to South Texas

Texans have a lot to be proud of, and the fact that we have a tropical oasis in our backyard should be on that list. South Padre Island, part of the world’s longest barrier island and with over 300 days of sunshine annually, is just a short plane ride or fun road trip from anywhere in the state. Once you arrive, ditch your car keys and just walk, bike, take a decked-out scoot coupe or golf cart anywhere you want to go. (The island is only 4.5 miles long and barely a half mile wide.)
South Padre Island’s climate also makes it a perfect habitat for many animal species from birds, to fish and plants. The island is part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and is a temporary home or stopping point for hundreds of birds on their spring and fall migration. Become a part of the birding scene at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. Walk along their nearly two miles of trails and catch a glimpse of not only birds, but many other animals in their natural habitat. Visit Sea Turtle Inc. and learn about sea turtle rescue, release and meet Allison, the first sea turtle ever to successfully use a prosthesis to help her swim. There are also dolphin excursions which will give you a glimpse of bottlenose dolphins, and if you are lucky, you might catch up with a pod that will swim alongside the boat. One of the best things about the island is the great local food. Make sure to have the lasagna and S’more pizza at Gabriella’s. Get your Tex-Mex fix at Señor Donkey’s and take advantage of the fresh seafood found on almost every menu on the island. BLT for breakfast anyone? Enjoy bacon, lobster and tomato eggs benedict and a mimosa while savoring your beach view at the Palm's Resort beachside café. South Padre Island has something to fit everyone’s budget. If you are looking for luxury, book a room at one of the island’s four full-service hotels and stop in for an hour-long massage at the luxurious Sapphire Spa. In just three years, Jordan Spieth has become not only one of the top-ranked professional golfers in the world, he has transformed the game of golf for the better. Spieth has brought a fresh and inspiring attitude, that all of us can learn from, to not only the game but to life in general. Spieth grew up in Dallas, in a selfless family environment, where the focus was on how they could all help take care of Ellie, his younger sister, who was born with a neurological disorder. Ellie inspired Spieth to launch his Family Foundation, which provides financial assistance and a platform for supporting children with special needs, military families and junior golf programs. His family's spirit instilled a strong sense of determination and perseverance into the young Spieth. He learned that to succeed in life, he needed a good team.

the mid-century modern style was poised to make a comeback. Sleek lines, transparent livable spaces, an abundance of natural light—for homes, mid-century modern is the equivalent of the iPod; less being much, much more. In an age where form doesn’t follow function—think of how many separate functions our phones are capable of—function is now the sole operative word, and what better than a style that makes use of conceptually open (and limitlessly functional) spaces?

When designing the trendy sanctuaries homeowners increasingly desire in their rush to decompress from the lighting-fast speed of the modern rat race, the mid-century modern style has never seemed better. Never has this been more true, either, for custom builds across Texas, in homes where an “Atomic Age” light fixture, a bronze metal sun mirror, and Don Draper deposited in an Eames Lounge Chair would not look out of place.

TEXAS LIFESTYLE | HABITAT “Across the board, that’s what we get asked for,” says Dallas-based designer and builder Tom Greico, of Greico Modern Homes. With the mid-century modern style “just about anything goes,” including dressing them with everything from modern to traditional and antique furniture, and all kinds of artwork. While traditional homes are itemized and structured—a living room here, check; a kitchen there, check—they can also be stuffier and far less visually pleasing as a result. The newest trends make use of big, gorgeous, livable spaces; as well as fluidity between indoors and outdoors, says Greico. “Things have changed in the last few years— we’re doing more open spaces,” concurs Dallas builder Saad Chehabi, president and CEO of S&R Development. “We’re also doing a lot of oversized floor-to-ceiling windows with very dark frame colors. Saad confirmed that in the last few years his firm has exclusively constructed for clients in a neo-classical style that he calls “clean-line contemporary.” “Nobody wants busy, nobody wants traditional,” says Saad. “It’s a lot cleaner, and a lot of bigger open spaces.” That includes clean white walls with no moldings, linear rectangular fireplaces and energy efficient spaces (such as fully sealed attics). But what’s all this added efficiency without the cherry on the top? Namely, complete automation that rivals the Jetsons. “Home automation is becoming more affordable, and more mainstream,” says Greico. “It used to be you spent $20,000 to get your house automated. Now, you can get it for a couple of thousand dollars.”
Mainstreaming Green Building Peter Pfeiffer, of Austin-based Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture, first got into “green” energy in the 1970s. Earth Day had just become a nationally recognized concept, and the oil embargo had sent gas prices skyrocketing. When he eventually settled in Austin, a stint at the University of Texas made him see the light: but not the one you might expect. For the past 36 years, Pfeiffer has led the charge towards “high performance design,” derisively referring to solar panels and geothermal pumps as “gizmos” that get more play than they really should. Honored in 2003 by The National Association of Home Builders for his lifelong achievements in “mainstreaming” green building, Pfeiffer’s fundamental question is simple: “Rather than relying on these things that break, why don’t we just design our buildings to need less energy in the first place?” Pfeiffer's approach formed the basis for a national energy program. After being tabbed by a think-tank formed by the Austin mayor and city council to look into alternatives to the building of another power p l a n t, t h e g r o u p l ooked int o energy-saving techniques that could be implemented citywide. Their efforts laid the groundwork for what would come to be known as Energy Star (the Environmental Protection Agency program’s star is a reference to the Lone Star State), started in Austin 35 years ago, which designs and subsidizes energy efficient appliances. There's still a lot of work to do to spread the word that a common sense approach can be a lot less expensive to implement, says Pfeiffer. “Design the building to use less energy in the first place,” he says. “Once you get that dealt with, then you can see if it’s worth it buying solar panels for your roof.”

For Monica Pope, food is the language of family. The German-born chef grew up in southwest Houston with the bayou as her backyard, learning the art of cooking from her Czech grandmother, who sparked Pope’s love of food. As a teenager, Pope spent two summers “studying” with her in Kansas, learning about Czech food and family recipes. Nobody else in the family felt comfortable making the traditional dishes or taking over grandmother’s role, so it fell to Pope. The budding teenage chef told a friend that she was going to open a restaurant and change the way Houston eats. Indeed, she has. Her critically acclaimed restaurants — The Quilted Toque, t’afia, Beaver’s and Sparrow Bar + Cookshop — are among those that have set a new standard for dining in Houston. Pope is the only Texas woman named a Top 10 Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine. She was a 2007 James Beard Award nominee, was named Best Chef of 2009 at the Houston Culinary Awards, and was a contestant on season two of the Bravo television show Top Chef Masters in 2010. My career has been about telling the stories behind the food.”

At Sparrow Bar + Cookshop, her newest restaurant, Pope creates daily menus from what is in season from local farmers and ranchers. “Ninety percent of the creative effort is already done by the farmer, cultivating and harvesting (at the right time) the food that grows well where you live.” Her digital cookbook, Eat Where Your Food Lives (available at www.ChefMonicaPope.com) aims to help the home cook with the remaining 10% effort that it takes to transform these raw ingredients into a memorable meal. She calls Houston a place of extreme opposites: a concrete jungle, a refinery coast and an air-conditioned oasis, all in one spot. At the same time, the city offers a unique, year-round growing season that produces a bounty of diverse food. For more than 13 years, she has worked to revive the true nature of Houston by supporting local farmers, ranchers and food producers, and helping found the popular Midtown Farmers Market. Pope is currently working on her first memoir entitled Eating Hope (and Other Things I’ve Had to Stomach), an insightful, poignant and humorous look at a woman’s place in the (restaurant) kitchen.

“I’ve opened eight restaurants in 25 years. The focus has always been to change the way Houston eats — but I had to figure out what that change should be. My main challenge has always been managing the moving parts; and there are lots of moving parts in this business. Whether you’re planning to visit in their highest season of July and August for summer fun or you’re planning your next family ski trip, you can’t go wrong with Sun Valley. By Marika Flatt
Celebrating 80 larger-than-life years, the iconic Sun Valley has earned a reputation for being a stellar destination year-round. Sun Valley Resort really shines in the summer, although its beloved ski season has drawn celebrities and regular folk alike to its legendary lodges since 1936. It was Union Pacific Railroad that bought a nearly 4,000-acre family ranch and built Sun Valley Lodge and its surrounding village to draw tourists year-round. Hollywood flocked to the debut and the stars are still coming. In 2015, the little town with big fun enjoyed a complete renovation of the famed Sun Valley Lodge, keeping the rustic look of its original designer (who also crafted lodges at Yosemite and Yellowstone) but now modernized for today’s traveler.
Leaving on a Jet Plane
Sun Valley sees the second most visitors coming from the Dallas airport. There are flights out of all major Texas airports that either fly direct or through a connection like Denver or San Francisco. It’s a 20-minute shuttle ride from the airport to the resort. Or, you can fly into Boise (cheaper tickets), rent a car and drive 2.5 hours to Sun Valley Resort. Sun Valley Resort accommodates all types of visitors. There are seven homes on property for larger parties. The small Sun Valley Inn is a delightful Austrian-inspired inn, whereas Sun Valley Lodge has 108 rooms, including five celebrity suites (named after celebs who frequented the lodge such as Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood and Ernest Hemingway [1]). The lodge rooms have 400+ square feet, and include a living room with a foldout sofa, a separate bedroom and renovated bathrooms [2] now triple their original size.

For breakfast, fuel up for a day of outdoor activities at the adorable Austrian-inspired Konditorei. They are known for their freshbaked pastries, locally roasted coffee and Old World hot cocoa. You have the choice of a sweet breakfast entrée like a nutella crepe or a protein-packed omelet (choose your own additions like sausage, spinach, mushrooms and Colby jack cheese) or eggs benedict. One evening, take the sleigh (in winter) or horse-drawn wagon (in warmer months) and ride a few miles down the road to Trail Creek Cabin. Here, you’ll be welcomed into a 1937 cabin that was once a private hideaway for writers like Hemingway, but is now a cozy restaurant. Crackling fireplaces, a full bar and comfort food await. Their famous four-course dinner pairs perfectly with a soundtrack of old country music from the likes of Alabama, The Oak Ridge Boys and Texas’ own Willie Nelson. After hiking or skiing Bald Mountain, have lunch at The Roundhouse, perched way up on the mountain with Instagramworthy views. Start with the cheese fondue to share and follow it up with a hearty roasted chicken or beef stew. If you’re feeling adventurous, pair those with a nice glass of wine or local beer. If you’re hiking or skiing Dollar Mountain, take a lunch break at Carol’s Lodge cafeteria where you can grab easy lunch items like soup, salads, wraps, burgers or a big ‘ole (Texas-sized) burrito. You’ll give your feet a nice break and fill your tummy for the afternoon of calorie burn.

The Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail

My kayak glides down a channel through mangroves that rise on either side of me like leafy walls shutting out the rest of the world. Several yards ahead, a great blue heron lifts off, beating its large wings majestically. A couple of fish splash in the water nearby. I’m on the Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail, actually four loops meandering through a black mangrove estuary, sloughs and lakes. Located between Aransas Pass and Port Aransas, it covers part of Redfish Bay, a State Scientific Area protecting five species of seagrass. Launch points at Lighthouse Lakes Park on Texas Hwy 361, south of Aransas Pass, provide easy access to marked loops of 1.25, 5, 6.7 and 6.8 miles. Redfish Loop, the longest route, winds closest to the circa-1857, recently restored and photogenic Lydia Ann Lighthouse, an important navigation aid in the Civil War.
To avoid getting lost in the mangrove maze, pick up a laminated trail map (see the website for places to find it) or book a guided trip with Coastal Bend Kayak in Aransas Pass (all gear provided). Price per person varies from $40 to $125 per person depending on the size of your group. Out here, I experience the Texas coast as it once was — just the wind, water, and wildlife. The mangroves provide shelter from the wind, leaving the shallow waters calm and perfect for leisurely paddling. In addition to herons, I’ve spotted goofy pelicans and bright-pink roseate spoonbills. In the more open seagrass beds and flats, or lakes, I sometimes see spotted seatrout and flounder, and other paddlers fishing for these or other fish. Some 400 dolphin call this area home and I’ve encountered them occasionally when crossing the channel.

Diving In Artist’s work refreshes body and soul By Julie Bonnin In Karen Landrigan’s paintings, ocean, air and sky dissolve into each other as a female swimmer exudes strength and focus. There’s a sense of mastery, solitude and resolve in the swimmers who populate her paintings, but also the delicious resistance of a body in water, the refreshing sense of washing away the superfluous. Her paintings invite the viewer to dive in, but the Houston artist didn’t have a choice. After a successful career in the corporate world, she suffered a massive stroke in July 2012 at the age of 50. Straddling a line between life and death, and unable to express herself for many months, she eventually became well enough to return home. Life wasn’t the same, and she found she needed a reason to fight so hard to live. “I’m a full bore girl,” says Landrigan, whose fit physique matches that of the figure in her paintings. She initially ignored a mentor’s advice to start painting, but when she finally decided to take his advice, she picked up the biggest canvas she could fit in her car and began a series of award-winning acrylic paintings with titles such as “Soaring,” “Roaring,” “Emerging,” and “Breathing.”

The paintings, full-color explorations and affirmations, seem to especially resonate with people who have been through similar life-changing crises, Landrigan says.

“I like the interaction between water and air, clouds to water to waves,” she says of her work. “It allows the story to change. It’s almost transparent in places. Am I here, or am I not?” Landrigan is an elected member of the Society for Canadian Artists, and she creates whimsical sketches and hand-made sterling silver jewelry, as well as her award-winning paintings. Michael Gladis: My dad's best friend in
Houston won the Houston Chili cook-off at one point. When we moved away, my dad asked if we could use his recipe to compete up North. We'd cook in these Connecticut chili cook-offs with a recipe that had won in Houston, (but) we never even placed! Not once. That being said, I've developed my own chili recipe, using that one as a base, and won some tiny cookoffs of my own.

hether eager ad-man or mob-man dubbed “The Tooth Fairy,” actor and native Texan Michael Gladis says, “any character they pay me to play” is a favorite. Gladis is making a switch this summer from copywriter Paul Kinsey on AMC's "Mad Men" to a role in the network's latest, "Feed the Beast." And what a beast. His character— Patrick Woichik—earns his nickname, Tooth Fairy, because of a fondness for pulling teeth. Gladis was born in Houston but the family moved east when he was about three-months-old. “I’m a Texan by birth, New Englander by upbringing.”

I've served my chili to many a Texan who have not only approved but also claimed it was the best they'd ever had. And I'm aiming to take a shot at a bigger cook-off sometime soon. So yeah, cooking a pot of chili (and drinking some cold beers along with it) is definitely my favorite Texas pastime.
TLM: What was the most difficult Mad Men episode for you? MG: The episode "Christmas Waltz" where I
came back as a Hare Krishna. Having to shave my head... and coming back to that world, in such a weird way... it was very surreal. I didn't know if I could do it, or if it would just be too weird or forced. Everyone on the show was really welcoming and people have told me they really enjoyed the episode.
TLM: “Feed the Beast,” premieres this summer. What's the scoop?
MG: The best way to describe it is half fine-dining restaurant "food porn,” half mob underworld. My character is currently in the latter world, but longs to be in the former. They call him the "Tooth Fairy" because ... well, you'll find out why in the first episode … he's not the kind of Tooth Fairy you want hovering over your bed at night, I'll tell you that. He's going to be one of my favorite characters ever, though.

ost folks know Sean Patrick Flanery as a versatile actor – from his early days in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, through such popular films as Boondock Saints and Powder. The Texasraised actor has just penned his first novel, Jane Two, an evocative, semi-autobiographical look back at his youth in Sugar Land, Texas.
Texas Lifestyle Magazine: How long did you have the idea for writing this novel?
incredibly arrogant because I wrote it... I wrote the screenplay before I wrote the book, to be honest.

TLM: You've lived in L.A. for years. Do you still carry a lot of Texas in you?
to put pen to paper [began] around 1997. I took two years off to focus on it. You learn a lot about yourself, opening an immense closet.
TLM: What are the differences between interpreting a character as an actor, and creating one as a writer? SPF: The tools you have
are completely different, but the method is exactly the same. As both an actor and a writer you want brevity and concision. In a film, if an actor's really good, he can cut lines out because he can translate feeling with no words at all. Writing is very different. It's a very strategic type of elimination.
TLM: Your depiction of family life in a small Texas town is remarkably on-target. SPF: When I look back on my life, I wasn't
raised with a lot. But, I wanted for nothing. My folks gave me a wealth of tools to pursue and attempt to achieve anything in the world.

SPF: I do. I know an actor writing a book is accompanied by a handful of eye-rolls. So my first goal is to get a couple of people to read it. I think it would play on the screen as a wonderful story. I know that sounds
SPF: So much so that I've been scouring Zillow to bring my family back to Houston. I want my kids to be raised the way I was raised, in the same culture. I haven't been able to find that in LA. TLM: But as you point out in the book, there are some things you can go back to and other things you can't.
SPF: I think I'm going to find the things that are important. I'll have a great family wherever I land, but Texas is closer to the heart. TLM: Are you still in touch
with your Boondock Saints co-star, Norman Reedus? He's become such a megastar with Walking Dead.
SPF: I speak to him at least once a week. I knew him before we did Boondock Saints. I've never seen that level of success come to someone and have it change them less. He's a genuinely wonderful cat. (Editor’s note: Reedus does the intro on Flanery’s book trailer.) TLM: What are the odds of a third Boondock Saints film? SPF: I wouldn't bet against it. The script is
written. It's just a matter of putting all the pieces together and getting [us] lined up.

Texas weather has decided to throw its classic curve ball into the festivities. Lightning streaks the sky and the temperature has dropped 30 degrees in the span of a single hour. But, behind a stage on Rainey Street, we’re in the calm center of the storm with Carla Gugino ("Spin City," "Sin City," "San Andreas") and Luke Wilson, Gugino’s co-star in the upcoming Showtime series, “Roadies." And the two stars are playing off one another like Hepburn and Grant as they wait to take the stage and introduce one of this year’s most sought-after SXSW headliners. Theirs is the chemistry that all television and film productions seek, the seamless interaction between two leads that every plot tries to manifest. It’s the lightning cracking outside the building, bottled up and put on display. Something is definitely in the air.

The show, “Roadies,” focuses on the stories and souls that support and enable the live music tours that Austin and SXSW have come to treasure. Produced by J.J. To celebrate the untold story of these roadies, Gugino and Wilson were in Austin to play host to the “Roadies House,” a SXSW event with a significant twist. It’s a labor of love, and their tour manager and production manager parts have been transcendent for both of them. These two, and hopefully audiences everywhere, are fascinated by the roles and the world the show reveals. “Because of Cameron’s connections, I was able to talk to Fleetwood Mac’s tour manager and the Eagles’ tour manager," says Wilson. "And, like Carla, I have friends that are on band crews.” "When you get to talk to the people behind the scenes, there are the stories of tour buses missing and finding the driver on a binge, two states over," adds Gugino. " That’s rock and roll for you.” The show seems poised for success. It helps that Crowe—a seasoned
