Bass Tub
Get up-close views of a big bass striking a lure, as professional angler Chuck Devereaux demonstrates a variety of techniques for casting and retrieval. Visitors to this year’s show will marvel at the giant 5,000-gallon Bass Tub aquarium, which offers views from both sides and stands nine feet tall. A Bass Tub is a unique aquarium, over 40 feet long, which rolls down the highway as a gooseneck trailer and is transformed into a natural habitat for thirty to forty fish of various species. To simulate the conditions normally found in nature, the tank comes fully stocked with rocks, stumps and dozens of live fish. Using live fish during our demonstrations

offers you the chance to see the fish and lure presentation in action. This is a great educational experience for the newbie and the veteran. Throughout the ten days of the show, fishing fanatics will find Devereaux perched on top of the massive tank as he demonstrates the proper use of fishing lures and offers other helpful suggestions. Stop by and see how your favorite fish reacts to Devereaux’s techniques and get a firsthand look at how lures operate in the water. The goal of the BASS TUB is to entertain by demonstrating fishing techniques. We want spectators to get excited about fishing! We share fishing information from a seasoned professional for individuals who are experienced anglers as well those amateurs who want to learn. This information teaches you the basics and professional tricks of the trade for effective fishing! Chuck also likes to hang around and answer questions.

Ultimate Shoot-Out Archery
Ultimate Shoot-Out Archery Experience The Ultimate Shootout Archery Trailer is an interactive experience inside a 40-foot hunting trailer. One side folds up revealing a natural hunting scene. After some pointers from our onsite pro, each show goer will have the opportunity to shoot a compound bow at several three-dimensional targets. The side of the trailer is clear Plexiglas
for easy viewing so friends and family can see the shooter in action and get lots of photos.

Wait a sec—before you make any decisions, you want to be a well-educated buyer, right? You want to know about the latest trends, the hottest gear, and the newest powerplants. That’s why we’ve been attending industry press events throughout the year, and why
we put together this boat show guide before the serious shopping begins.
Latest and Greatest
For the past few years we’ve seen developments in the small boat market trending towards simpler, more afford-
able boats, and while there are still plenty of these on the market, this year we’re seeing an explosion of tech being integrated into small boats. This change relates to two factors: the ability of newer, less expensive multifunction displays to act as an information hub, and
Fiberglass construction technology continues to bring more efficiency to the boat-building process, resulting in stronger, lighter hulls.

the advancements of digital switching. Don’t let this scare you off; as is generally the case with consumer electronics, immediately after the introduction of new gadgetry its prices quickly fall. And while we’re certainly not going to call the boats rigged with this stuff “cheap,” they’re a lot less expensive than one might imagine. Consider, as an example, a bass boat that comes standard with an MFD chartplotter/fishfinder that retails for around $1,000. Most of these electronics are perfectly capable of NMEA 2000 integration. Meanwhile, more and more builders are adding digital switching to their boats. Put these two abilities together and you can control everything from Power Poles to trolling motors to livewell pumps, all from the screen right on the helm. And while we saw a lot of progress in this regard in larger, more expensive boats last year, for 2018 the tech has worked its way into bass, bay, and flats boats as small as 17 feet. Fiberglass construction techniques also continue their march forward, with resin infusion and vacuum-assisted fiberglass construction becoming more and more common. That means a boat’s pieces-parts have the ideal resinto-glass ratio, reducing weight yet not sacrificing one iota of strength. As an added bonus, most vacuum-molding techniques create a fiberglass part that’s finished on both sides. When you flip up a hatch, the underside won’t be rough or ragged but is instead smooth and easy to clean. But fiberglass doesn’t have a lock on improving construction. Aluminum boats are constantly progressing as well. One of the more interesting tweaks seen lately is the addition of more complex running surfaces. Aluminum bass boats, bay boats, and skiffs used to have fairly straightforward, simple hull bottoms but recently we’ve seen several variable-degree deadrise boats introduced. That means the shape of the V tapers from steep to mild going from the bow to the transom, enhancing wave-splitting abilities without sacrificing stability. Interestingly, even pontoon boats JAN

are reaping the rewards of enhanced design. While not new to the market, more and more models are incorporating welded-on strakes and chines, center “half-logs” which enhance performance while minimizing cost, and under-deck skins that improve hydrodynamics. Even personal watercraft are getting into the act. And by that we don’t mean jet skis. Mini fishing boats that
are part kayak, part SUP and part center console are coming on strong. In fact, there are even one-man microskiffs that can run at speeds in the upper teens with a six-horsepower outboard. Again, advancing construction technology helps make a creation like this possible—even though it’s 14’ long ad 3’4” wide, the Bote Rover weighs a mere 105 pounds Another segment of the boat market

that seems to be exploding is that of the jet-powered center console fishing boat. A few years ago Yamaha raised some eyebrows with the 190 FSH, which was essentially a center console deck sitting atop a 19” Yamaha jet boat hull and power system. Scarab followed suit (as we mentioned in last year’s boat show primer), with their 195 Open. And now Yamaha has introduced a 21-foot version of a jet powered center console fishing boat, and expanded their line to include six center console models. While jet boats may usually be the domain of watersports lovers, this year despite having jets usurped by anglers, wake-boarders and wake-surfers have an entirely different thing to crow about: dual propellers in a straight-shaft powertrain. Boaters have long known the advantages provided by dual propeller outdrives (like the DuoProp by VolvoPenta and the Bravo III by Mercury), which include improved handling, acceleration, and reverse performance. But they’ve never been available in an inboard arrangement. And most serious wakeboard, water ski, and wake surf enthusiasts prefer straight inboards. For 2018, the first-ever contra-rotating dual propeller inboard shaft drive was introduced by ZF, with their Project Disruption drive, which incorporates a strut-housed underwater gearbox.
Powerful Change The outboard market never sits still for long, and this year, there are a number of new options hitting the water. Are you ready for some powerful changes? Check out what all these outboard manufacturers have in store. BRP – If you like the idea of joystick piloting on an outboard boat, you’ll want to learn about Evinrude’s new iDock system. This is the first joystick system to incorporate an aircraft gyro sensor, which allows it to fight the effects of wind and current without any added input from the user—you just twist or push the joystick, and iDock does the work. Added bonus: this is the least expensive joystick system around, with an MSRP of just $5,999. Thanks to the fact that Evinrude’s G2 engines already have a helix steering system and digital controls, many of the pieces and parts that normally have to be added in to get joystick control are already present. That allows Evinrude to keep the cost down, and this price point is actually less than half of some competitor’s joystick systems. HONDA – Honda is joining the jetset, with three new jet-drive outboard models. By mounting a jet drive on their BF60 powerhead they’ve created
a 40-hp jet, the BF90 platform is used to make the 65-hp jet, and the BF150 results in a 105-hp jet. (Remember that with any jet drive outboard, there’s a horsepower loss when converting from a propeller-driven model). All of these models have the usual Honda perks: multiport EFI, overhead camshafts, and lean-burn features to maximize fuel economy. MERCURY – Outboard-wise Mercury is sitting pretty for the moment, and doesn’t have any big news to communicate. They have, however, announced the development of a new multifunction display, the VesselView 903. This has all the features of the VesselView 703 but a larger, 16 x 9 aspect ratio high-def touch-screen. It can display up to 30 different data points, and can be used to manage engine applications clear up to quadruple engines. SUZUKI – With the introduction of the DF350A, Suzuki is making some serious waves this year. Not only is this a completely new powerhead—the largest-ever displacement four-stroke designed specifically for outboard applications, at 4.4 liters—it also boasts contra-rotating dual propellers. That means it has enhanced slow speed and reverse handling. And it also means an increase in blade area of 80-percent, giving the engine an unusual ability to handle extremely heavy loads and power large boats up onto plane quickly. TOHATSU – Tohatsu has worked battery-less EFI into their small, portable motors, with the new MFS20E, MSF15E, and MAF9.9E. That means no choke starting, no carb-clogging ethanol issues, and enhanced efficiency. Tohatsu moved the crank and drive shafts forward in these new models, which reduces tilting weight by 26-percent. Tohatsu has also decided to tap into LPG, with their LPG 5HP. This engine runs on a bottle of propane instead of a tank of gas, and is available in short and long shafts, has a 60-watt five-amp charging system, and is available with a

high-thrust prop. YAMAHA – Yamaha has a number of new powerplants you need to know about, starting with the F90. Despite the popularity of the old F90 Yamaha saw fit to create a new platform in this range (which also includes a 75-hp model) and the new 90 is physically smaller, 13 pounds lighter, yet has a 13-percent increase in displacement; the old model was a 1.6 liter powerhead and the new one is 1.8 liters. Also new is the Yamahas F25. In this case Yamaha shaved a whopping 25-percent of the engine’s weight off, making it the lightest 25-horse outboard available today, at 126 pounds. Maybe even more important is the incorporation of battery-less EFI. Not only does this boost efficiency and make for one-pull starts, it also means that since the fuel system is pressurized and contained, the usual problems with ethanol fuel gunking up a carb are history. Finally, Yamaha also introduced a new F2.5 mini-outboard this year. At a weight of 37 pounds, it’s ideal for use on very small boats and canoes that can take an outboard. It features forward and neutral gears (you spin it around 180-degrees to get reverse thrust) and an integrated 0.9 liter fuel tank. It also has Yamaha’s leak-prevention system, so you can lay it down in the back of an SUV or a pick-up without having to worry about fuel or oil leaking out.
may be willing to eat the cost on an accessory or two to get the price down and make a deal happen, so there’s nothing wrong with asking. Others won’t want to go there, but another option you can explore is extended warranties. If they can’t remove the cost of the carpet and stereo, for example, maybe they can offer an extended warranty on the boat to sweeten the deal. 2. IF YOU OPT for ordering a boat that’s outfitted exactly as you like instead of purchasing the one they have in the show, ask the dealer if he can pass on a discount. Some manufacturers – though not all – will offer a slight discount to dealers when they order and pay up front, instead of ordering a boat on a “floor plan” (credit). This isn’t a huge amount, usually around three to five percent of the boat’s cost, but if the dealer is going to save some cash on the deal you should, too. 3. WHEN LOOKING at the bottom line, don’t feel like you need to haggle for every penny. Most boats are marked up in the general vicinity of 30-percent, but a dealer’s overhead usually runs over 20-percent. So they actually don’t have a huge margin to work within.
And there’s an advantage to making sure the dealer is just as happy as you are, because they’ll be more likely to give you better service on maintenance and repairs if they want you to come back when it’s time to upgrade. 4. IF YOU’RE TRADING a boat in, negotiate a final price on the new boat before you even discuss the value of your old one. Mixing the two transactions causes confusion. If you keep the deals separate, you may find you’re better off selling your old boat yourself. Or, maybe not. But if you allow the two deals to become one, you’ll never really know. 5. PLAN TO VISIT the boat show twice: on the first day and on the last day. Don’t buy anything on day one and when you show up on the last day of the show, the dealer will know you’re serious. He’ll also want to close out the show with last-minute sales, so this is a great time to get down to brass tacks.

Boat Show Buyer Pointers
If you plan to purchase a new boat at the shows, naturally, you want to get the best deal possible. And remember, the dealers are there for one reason and one reason only: to sell boats. Use these tips, to make sure you end up getting the most bang for your buck. 1. IF A BOAT has accessories or extra options you don’t need or want, you don’t want to pay for them. But the truth is that the boat you see sitting before you comes as-equipped and there’s a good chance ordering a new hull will take months. Some dealers JAN

Trailer Road Trip Tips
O
UR CARAVAN assembled in an Academy parking lot at 7:00 pm, for a final huddle before departing on the 10-hour run. Our goal: to get all four trailerboats to the inlet—in functional condition—by daybreak the next morning. Our plan: to slay numerous grouper, kingfish, snapper, and whatever the heck else we can sink a hook into, during the next three days. It will be sunup to sunset fishing, with no breaks and no excuses. On the fourth morning, we’ll load up and make the long haul home. Fortunately, even for an ambitious road trip like this we’re prepared because we know these road trip rules: THIS IS A TEAM EFFORT Make runs like this as a group. Stay together, and use FRS radios to stay in touch. Don’t depend solely on cell phones, because someone’s is sure to run out of battery power or enter a dead zone at some point or another. Every vehicle should carry at least two drivers, so you can take shifts. Driving to the point of exhaustion is a major reason accidents occur, and accidents shut down fishing trips just as effectively as a 50-knot wind. REPAIR KIT Prior to a major haul you need to make up a repair kit, which includes spare bearings (don’t forget the extra spindle nut, washer, and cotter pin), a spare wheel hub, spare lightbulbs, a spare tail light assembly, spare lug nuts, a spare sidelight assembly, spare wire plugs (male and female) and spare wire. CHILL OUT When you arrive at your destina-

tion you’ll be chomping at the bit to dunk the boat, and start fishing. But take your time when you pull up to the ramp. You want at least 10 or 15 minutes to pass before you launch, to allow your bearings and hubs to cool off. Back down into cool saltwater while they’re still hot from the road trip, and the metal might crack. BREAK TIME Take frequent breaks. Yes, this will delay your arrival and you’ll need to plan in additional travel time to make up for them. But there are several mechanical reasons to stop every three hours or so. First off, you’ll want to feel the hubs of each trailer wheel as soon as you pull over. If the bearings are sufficiently greased and in good shape, the hubs will be slightly warm to the touch. If not, they’ll feel hot. If a hub is hot enough to make you jerk back your hand in pain, you’re danger-close to a bearing failure. Secondly, the breaks

give you an opportunity to check your lights and make sure they’re all working properly. As we all know, faulty lights can lead to flashing lights in the rearview, which can lead to a significant delay-of-fishing penalty. RUNNING ON EMPTY Generally speaking, you’ll want to keep your load as light as possible to stress your trailer and tow vehicle as little as possible. One way to eliminate a huge amount of weight from the haul is to run your boat until it’s nearly out of fuel, before loading up for the big road trip. Gasoline weighs about 6.2 pounds per gallon. If you’re pulling a boat that carries 100 gallons of fuel, that’s another 620 pounds of weight—a significant amount for any rig on the road. Also empty freshwater tanks and put weighty gear in your truck, not the boat.

F YOUR TASTE, BUDGET AND personal style don’t necessarily allow for a boat, a personal watercraft may be just the ticket to get you out on the water. Whether it is your first purchase or part of a floating fleet, there are as many considerations when you are scoping out the marketplace – as well as maintenance and safety concerns that should be part of your decision. Start by choosing whether to purchase a new or used watercraft. In

No matter how good the product or its condition, that personal watercraft will need to be serviced to assure its best performance and give you as few headaches as possible. Unless you are lucky enough to live very close to the water, there will also be a trailer for trans-

portation, and it will require regular maintenance, as well. Plan on buying a cover, too. It will keep your new toy looking good longer. Most dealers carry an assortment of both new and used watercraft so, as you begin your shopping experience, plan to spend some time with a couple of dealers in your area. Get comfortable with the person at the dealership who will be your primary contact and check out the service and maintenance area. It will tell you a lot about how the dealership functions – and remember that once 2 0 1 8

you have made your purchase it will be the service department that you will be working with on a regular basis. At least until you are ready to trade in and trade up. If you are purchasing a personal watercraft from a private party, be sure to have it thoroughly checked out by the dealer that you plan to have service it in the future. It is also recommended that you ask that seller who has serviced and maintained the vehicle in the past. There may be a record of problems that will make your decision easier. It also helps if you have narrowed down your preferences so that you are not overwhelmed by options. Remember how much research you did when you bought a car or truck? It is the same principle. Make choices about the styling, number of seats (1 to 3), ergonomics and seating comfort, versatility, and – if you are buying new – innovations like braking options, off-throttle steering, speed limiting and reverse controls, and more. Whether a new or used watercraft is in your future, you should insist on one with an autokill switch that is easily accessible. As with any vehicle, the engine (usually two stroke or four stroke in a personal watercraft) is the heart of the machine. Check out the specs and understand that performance under specific conditions like towing will be affected if you don’t allow for enough power and capability. Once you have chosen and purchased that wonderful new toy there is a lot to learn before you venture out. Get the dealer to walk you through all of the features, safety considerations and limitations. Nothing is without limitations, and that includes personal watercraft. Recognize that standard floatation devices are not adequate for personal watercraft. When you are zipping along the surface of the water and either fall or are thrown from one of these at 30 to 40 mph, you need the stability of full floation vests. Plan it into your budget. Always have a fire extinguisher in easy reach when you use a personal watercraft and make sure it is current JAN

Other things to take along, according to those in the know, are heavy-duty sunscreen, drinking water, flares (in case you have a failure when you are out on the water and need help), and a waterproof floating storage container for your cell phone. Other things to know and practice: • Always let at least one person who is not accompanying you know where you are planning to go and when you expect to return. Call them when you get back.
• Learn when licenses and permits are required for your personal watercraft, trailer and individuals who will be onboard. Laws vary dramatically from place to place and there are local, state and (sometimes) federal regulations what are in force. • Never use alcohol or drugs when you are using a personal watercraft and be extremely aware of your surroundings.

Travel Trailer & RV Buying Tips

HOOSING THE TYPE and size of RV that is right for you is very personal. The first step is to ask yourself how you will be using the RV. Will you be taking long trips or short ones? Will you be staying in one place or stopping at multiple camping areas on the same trip? How many people will be accommodated on a regular basis? Will they be adults or children? Do you plan to travel with pets? (more than 50% of RVers do). Do you already own a tow vehicle or planning to purchase one? Do you want a self-contained RV with its own gas or diesel engine? How much money do you have to spend? Are you plan-

BY LINDA WATER NELSON ning to get a loan to cover the cost of purchase? Will you be buying new or used? Each of these is a consideration that will affect your choice. Making a list of your needs and answering these questions will help an RV dealer make the right recommendations; after all, you probably wouldn’t opt for a pop-up camper if you planned long trips with lengthy stays. One trend that might affect your RV choice is toward destination camping. The RV is literally delivered by the dealer to a camping location for an

extended stay. The RVers drive their car to and from, but don’t actually trailer the RV.
Do your research
The more effort you invest at the front end of choosing an RV, the more satisfied that you will probably be with your decision. As with buying a car or truck today, the Internet, including user forums, is a great ally when researching the type of RV that might be right for you. You should attend outdoor shows and dealer open houses as a way to see a range of RVs. At a dealership, there will probably be some used RVs to check out. You can see the difference between the older and newer models and continue to solidify your thinking 2 0 1 8

about what is right for you. If you will be towing with a vehicle that you already own or one that you plan to purchase, thoroughly check the manufacturers’ website for towing capabilities and load bearing specifics. Remember that fuel economy will be radically affected by the load that you are towing. About 90% of RV buyers already own their tow vehicle so actual specs are an important factor. Don’t rely on an old belief as to the limitations on what you can pull. RV manufacturers are committed to taking the weight out of trailers and your vehicle may be able to pull a larger unit than you thought.
Size, type, fuel, and price range
Some other considerations include where you plan to stay. Some larger RV units are not allowed in older RV parks, as well as state and national parks; if you are staying in hotter climates, you could need 50 amps and two air conditioners in your RV; in colder climates you might opt for more insulation. Will you be boondocking and need larger water and holding tanks – and, remember, a smaller RV is easier to maneuver off road or on back roads. After making a real world assessment of how and how often you will actually use your RV and researching the types of RVS, their pros and cons and your budget, contact your insurance agent to check out the price of insuring your trailer or motor home. Ask about rates and safety records for the type of RV you have selected. Higher rates may mean a history of more accidents. Again, the Internet and user forums will give you a picture beyond the brochures and manufacturers’ websites.

You can generally expect that your credit score will be a major factor in what can be financed, the same as it would be with a house or automobile. The down payment for an RV is usually about 10%, according to the RVIA spokesperson, but will be dependent upon your creditworthy status.
Find the right dealer and ask the right questions
Your RV buying experience will only be as good as the dealer you do business with. Talk to several before making a purchase. Evaluate them at the show and at their dealerships. Check with the Better Business Bureau and other rating services to find out what other customers report and whether or not complaints have been filed and how they were handled. You will probably be using the dealer that you buy from for service on your
RV, too. Ask for a tour of their service facilities and find out what repairs they do onsite and which they send to other places. Check out gorving.com for a storehouse of useful information about RV dealers in your area. About 10 – 12% of people interested in making an RV purchase rent one before they buy. When doing this, it is best – for the obvious reason -- to experience it with the same mix of people that you will be traveling with after you buy. The Yellow Pages or an Internet search in your area should identify the places that rent the type of RV that interests you. If you are uncertain, take a few weekend trips in different RVs to solidify your decision. Remember that dealers will be offering special show prices at the show, so that is a good place to deal after you have made your decision. If you go to the show as a way of making that decision, ask if you can lock in show pricing for a week or a month. Dealers will often oblige.

ATVs: Buy Smart, Ride Smart
A
LL IT TAKES FOR most people to decide that they need to buy an ATV is a ride on one. The exhilaration and feeling of unbridled adventure cannot be matched by any other land vehicle today. However, the emotional kick needs to be matched by both a sense of responsibility and knowledge about which ATV is right for you. There are two basic types of ATVs. Utility ATVs are generally used for hunting and camping as well as for chores like earth or snow moving, while Sport ATVs, which have no front and rear racks, are more appropriate for speed, jumping and looking very cool. As they have gained a following, there has been enormous effort toward crossing over between the two, and there is even one that combines a boat and ATV for amphibian action. There are two engine types and each has benefits. The four-stroke engine has moving parts that are oiled on a
continuous basis by an oil sump. These are either air or liquid cooled, with air being most common. They are the quietest and more fuel efficient in terms of mpg – a benefit for
more fuel. Other factors will include automatic clutch or automatic transmission, size (usually a factor of budget) and two or four wheel drive, and drive shaft, chain drive or belt drive. All current ATVs
driving long trails. Lubrication on two-stroke (or twocycle) engines is achieved by actually burning fuel. A combination of gas and oil is mixed either by oil reservoir or by combining a measured amount of oil in the fuel tank. Two cycle engines are generally noisier with a smokier exhaust. They also burn
have four wheels. The manufacturers decided some time ago that the incidence of accidents and liability suits just weren’t worth it. Think long and hard before buying one on the secondary market.
Do your research
Use the Internet, user forums and other research tools once you have settled on a few models. While every driver is different, other people’s experience can be an omen of what you might expect. Also, when selecting a dealer, check the Better Business Bureau and other consumer rating services to see if there have been complaints and how they have been handled.

Rocket Launchers
OCKET LAUNCHERS may all look the same at first glance, but anyone who’s owned a boat with imperfect rocket launchers lining the T-top or arch knows that several small details can make some great, and some others terrible. This is one of those little boat-building details that many manufacturers – especially those run by people who don’t actually fish – fail to recognize. And in the long run, just how good those rocket launchers are will have a significant impact on how much you enjoy a day of fishing.
CAPACITY: A set of four is barely minimal. The picture here shows a hard top with eight, yet you still see some rod tips sticking up (from the leaning post rodholders) because a day of mixed inshore/offshore angling requires a large selection of different sized rods and reels. SPACING: While more rocket launchers are better than fewer, if too many are crammed into too small an area the reels will bang into each other as you cruise. There needs to be enough space between each holder that the rods and reels don’t touch. HEIGHT: This is a toughie, and is where many builders fall down. They need to be low enough that an averagesized angler has no trouble reaching them, but MUST be high enough that people don’t bang their heads on them. This can be a serious hazard, and has led to many a bloodied forehead. If it comes down to holders being too low or too high they should be too high, and some part of the leaning post, an aft cooler, or a flip-out step can be used to step up and grab the rods. 42 |

GIMBALS: Rod holder gimbals are important, even if you use inshore gear that doesn’t “lock in” on a gimbal butt. The reason is, again, so your gear doesn’t get banged up. If the holders don’t have gimbals all the weight of the rig will be resting on the foot of the reel, connecting the reel itself with the reel seat. And with each and every wave, it’ll bang against the cold hard metal of the rodholder. Eventually, this will do some damage.

INSERTS: Once more, this is a matter of protecting your gear. Thick rubber inserts are a must-have, and its important that they fit tightly or sometimes they’ll come out with the rod. So, what do you do when you find the ideal boat and it has sub-par rocket launchers? It’s worth taking the boat to a welder, and having new rocket launchers installed. This may cost a bit of extra cash but as we said before, it will have a serious impact on how much you enjoy a day of fishing – and that’s what we want our boats for, in the first place.

T IS ALL ABOUT AVAILABLE cover. Large Texas reservoirs have many coves, fingers and shorelines and in any given area the best cover will be the area that draws in the bass, particular during the late summer and early fall period according to Texas bass pro Russell Cecil. Besides being a touring FLW pro, Cecil and his partner Todd Castledine are the current Anglers of the Year in the Texas Team Trail and Bass-N-Bucks Anglers of the Year for both the Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn Summer Series events. In other words, Cecil knows a thing or two about Texas bass fishing. “I love punching the ‘hay’ or the thick grass that will grow up in mats sometimes in the middle of the lake on little islands or humps and on shorelines,” Cecil said. “When that kind of cover is prevalent in an area you can bet there will be bass there. One of the keys is to have a good pair of polarized shades with superior lenses like the new Sunrise from Costa to look down in the pockets for fish and movement.” Then it’s time to “punch”. That means rigging up a soft plastic, usually some sort of creature bait, on a heavy weight. Cecil’s favorite rig utilizes a snell knot with an Owner Jungle Flipping Hook rigged on 80-pound Ande braid. This rig is flipped into pockets in the grass or any area that is penetrable. Most bites are a few seconds after the rig has hit the bottom showing the fish are hearing or feeling the lure and then responding. “You want to pay attention to anything that feels different whether it is a pulling sensation or any type of sudden stop,” Cecil said. Guide Hiring Guidelines
I
HAVE WRITTEN, FILMED AND podcasted extensively about fishing guides from all over the great state of Texas and beyond. I have fished and hunted with numerous guides in my outdoor career. Since I don’t own a boat at the present time, I find guides to be an affordable way to enjoy the great outdoors and the best it has to offer. While there are horror stories out there of guides being subpar in performance and overall success, those guides usually don’t last for very long in the outdoor industry and guiding world. As the old saying goes, “the cream always rises to the top,” and this is very true in the guiding business. As with most things in this industry, word and reputation travels fast and, typically, only the best survive in the long run. This summer, I went on a few guided fishing adventures. All but one of the guides I fished with had no idea I had authored a book on Amazon Kindle about the hunting and fishing guide service businesses and I kept it that way until the end of these trips. All of the guides I fished with did an incredible job. There are a few common denominators here which I want to briefly touch on in this blog. Royce Simmons with Gone Fishin’ Guide Service out of Richland Chambers Lake took my son, his grandpa (my father-in-law) and I fishing this past June, right after school went on summer break. What set Royce apart from the pack was his attention to detail in helping my now 8 year old son, Jackson, be successful on the white bass and hybrid fishing action. The bite was on big time on this trip and we were catching them on top water lures, slabs and jigs, and sometimes even two at a time! My son won’t soon forget that trip as we limited out with 75 fish by 9:30am making that about a 2 ½

hour fishing trip full of angling action. My arm was tired from all the catching! Last August I ventured to Buras, Louisiana for the Buras Marsh Media Bash event for writers and other media folks. This was hosted at Cajun Fishing Adventures which is one of the nicest larger capacity fishing and hunting

lodges I have had the pleasure of staying at when out of town. We had a different guide every day of this event and each of them demonstrated proper guide protocol. They were finding fish when the bite was slow and doing everything they could to make their clients successful when the fishing was hot. On this trip the fishing was smoking hot at times. Add to that fishing fun the quality of 13 Fishing rods and reels, the toughness of Z-Man swimbaits and
other soft plastics and the incredibly realistic lures from LIVETARGET and we had a phenomenal fishing adventure. Catching a 40-inch redfish is a fish of a lifetime to me. To catch 7 bull reds in that same category of overall size and weight in one day was a memory I will carry with me for a long time. That is the result of a great guide that knows what he or she is doing. You can’t expect every trip to be that wonderful but all three guides equally worked hard to put us on fish each day. My point is that a great guide takes care of his clients like they are family. He or she should do everything they can in the trip to grind out a good box of fish for the fillet table, if that is the goal, and, most importantly, ensure each angler has a solid amount of fun trying to catch fish or be successful in whatever pursuit they are on that day. How do you ensure you get the best guided experience possible? In short, ask good questions and do your research before you trip. Check out the article I wrote here and the podcast I recorded here for the top 10 things to look for in your next guide or outfitter. It’s a long article and podcast but I assure you it is worth the read and listen. We have some fantastic guides in the hotspots section of Texas Fish & Game Magazine every month which is a good place to start your search. Many of these guides have been around for 20-30 years or longer. While many outdoor pursuits can get expensive in a hurry, my point in hiring a guide is that you don’t have to have your own boat to have fun at the lake or have a seasonal or year-long lease for hunting. Go at it hardcore and have fun out there on the water.

Can Fish Hear Your Outboard? Does It Matter?

HE SIMPLE ANSWER to both of these questions is yes. But, there’s so much more to this story… The other day I got into a somewhat heated argument with an angler who swore an idling four-stroke outboard would scare away fish if the boat drifted over them. IMHO he was dead wrong, and here’s why I say that: I’ve dropped a hydrophone beneath the

IND AND rain are the bane of boaters, trapping us on shore when we’d much rather be out there
on the water. When it comes to weather, of course, discretion is the better part of valor— decide to go out when there are 30 knot gusts and lightning strikes, and you will not be a happy camper. That said, if you cancel your day of fishing every time your friendly local schizophrenic weatherman claims there’s a risk, you may well never leave the dock. Fortunately, you have gobs of options when it comes to making an educated decision about the weather. In fact, in the past couple of years those options have rapidly multiplied, thanks to the

Weather Web
Getting on the web is a whole new experience these days, weather-wise. Sure, you still have those old stand-bys, like weatherchannel.com, weatherunderground.com, and your local news. But some newer sites that focus purely on marine forecasting have taken it a step farther. Buoyweather.com, for instance, includes not just forecasts but also realtime weather buoy data, wave charts, sea temperature and chlorophyll charts, and tide data. And since the forecasting

is based around a chart (choose Texas from the Gulf States list, put the cursor over your specific area, and click), it’s incredibly easy to use. Another good one is Fishweather.com. In fact, I’ve become so accustomed to using this site that I almost never leave the dock without checking it first. Fishweather overlays wind forecasts over a detailed NOAA chart, allowing you to choose the exact location and see all the wind, wave, and sea condition data. What’s even better is the ability to break down the forecasts into three hour increments. For those of us who are sick and tired of NOAA’s overly-broad and unspecific marine forecasts, Fishweather is a hands-down winner. Another nice thing about using the web for your weather is that you can continue checking it throughout the day, if you have a smart phone. Added bonus: you can set your phone to give 2 0 1 8

Generally speaking, forecasts don’t do you much good unless you’re on the water for an extended period of time. But real-time wind updates are The Fishweather.com website. great for helping you you alerts, in case of deteriorating identify trends, the approach of fronts, weather. Which leads us to... or changes in the current conditions.

Since that smart phone is in your pocket, why not take full advantage of it? You can choose from countless weather apps these days, although you should recognize that some are a lot better than others. A handful of the most popular include Weatherbug, Weather Underground, The Weather Channel, Bluefin, and Lightning Finder. All have their own strengths and weaknesses. Here are some key things to look for when you choose which weather app is best for you. Obviously, you’ll want to make sure it covers the areas where you regularly go fishing and boating. Remember, some apps only cover specific regions for free, and you’ll have to pay extra to get complete coverage. Another important item is the availability of current Doppler radar images. Many apps (or free versions of apps which can be upgraded for a fee) only provide text forecasts. These are usually based on those same NOAA predictions (sometimes they appear verbatim), which really doesn’t help much. On the other hand, real-time animated Doppler lets you see storms to track their direction and speed of travel. This is a great help in deciding when you need to head back to the dock. Graphic lightning displays are another great feature to look for. Lightning is one of those things we boaters really want to avoid. So, seeing when and where strikes are occurring can help you make much more intelligent go/ JAN

More Tools
Now, let’s say you don’t get reliable— or any—cell service in some of the areas you go boating. There are still some weather tools you can utilize. The first and best is satellite weather, such as Sirius/XM satellite. In most cases it can interface with your chartplotter/GPS, and put those weather maps and forecasts right up on the helm. This is a more expensive option than most others. A receiver costs between $100 and $500 depending on brand, and you’ll also have to pay a monthly access fee which ranges from about $10 to $50/month (depending on what level of service you choose). But that expense gets you everything those apps and web sites offer, and then
some. Finally, for the lightning-averse among us, you can also get a dedicated lightning detector. These don’t cost much ($50 to $100) and are simple to use. Just turn them on, and a series of blinking lights and/or tones will alert you to lightning strikes within range (which varies from unit to unit but covers at least 50 miles) as they take place. It also shows how far away they are. Aside from all of these goodies and gadgets (technology be damned) you still have those old weather rules that mariners have lived by for centuries. So, no matter what gear and goodies you may or may not have on board, always remember: —Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. —Red sky in morning, sailors take warning. —When grass is dry at morning light, look for rain before the night. —Sound traveling far and wide, a stormy day it does betide. —When wind blows from west, fish bite the best; when it blows from east, fish bite the least. —When clouds look like rocks and towers, you should expect frequent showers. —Seagulls, seagulls, sitting on sand, it’s never good weather when you’re on land.

Resources for Boaters

OATING IS AN ACTIVity that requires a certain amount of know-how, which most of us pick up through experience. But, how’s someone who’s new to boating supposed to learn their port from their starboard? A good starting point is the boating safety class all new boaters are required to take. Anyone born after 1993 must take this course before they operate a powerboat in the state of Texas, and anyone who’s not already very experienced on the water, regardless of their age, will be well-served by taking it. (Just go to www. boat-ed.com). Of course, there’s plenty to learn beyond taking the minimum required safety course. Fortunately, in this day and age there are also plenty of organizations and publications out there which are ready and willing to lend a hand. One of the most helpful you’ll find is Discover Boating, a public awareness campaign managed by the NMMA (National Marine Manufacturer’s Association). Go to www.discoverboat-
ing.org, and you can get a free starter CD with gobs of information on boats and boating. You can also read up on different types of boats, what you need to know about owning and operating them, and financing and insuring boats—there’s even an online “spousal conversion kit” that might come in handy if your better half is still on the fence. You prefer reading things the old-fashioned way, on paper? Not a problem; visit the web site and you can sign up to get the Discover Boating 48 |

Beginner’s Guide to boating, which is an excellent resource, through the mail. The Take Me Fishing campaign, supported by the RBFF (Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation) is another resource you’ll find on the web which is chock-full of good info. And after you peruse the web site for advice, download the RBFF’s free Boat Ramps app onto your Apple or Android smartphone. It gives you the locations of and directions to over 35,000 boat ramps nationwide. You can search by zip code,
city, or current location. When researching specific boats, you can read boating magazine and web reviews, like those found on Fishgame. com. You can also watch video boat reviews, on sites like Boats.com. And there are many owner’s groups which have formed around specific manufacturers. These often have web sites with message boards; many are full of good info about specific makes and models, but they should also be taken with a grain of salt, since anyone can comment on them and inaccurate information regularly surfaces on “open” message boards. The ABA (American Boating Association, www.americanboating. org) is another web site with info that should be of interest to new boaters, especially in its Safety section.

The same is true of many state agencies including TPWD (Texas Parks and Wildlife, at http://www.tpwd.state. tx.us/). BoatUS (www.boatUS.com) has another web site that’s rich with information, although boaters should also be aware of the many other services this organization has to offer, including a printed magazine, special-interest divisions and publications like BoatUS Trailering and BoatUS Fishing, as well as many club membership benefits. Most folks, however, will look to BoatUS for their insurance and on-the-water towing needs. If reading hard-copy is more your speed, grab a few copies of magazines like Texas Fish & Game, which have regular boating how-to columns and feature articles. And of course, you can always go to the ultimate authority on the water – the United States Coast Guard – for more information. Their web site has more than mere advice, too, with downloadable PDF float plans you can use, a video library, and boater’s handbook. However you choose to do your research and learn more about boating, the important thing is simply that you know enough to stay safe on the water. And with all of the resources freely available to you today, that should present no problem at all.
