When Vasily Kandinsky and Franz Marc formed Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group in late 1911, the artists predicted a watershed in the arts, a große Umwälzung (great upheaval) that would radically challenge traditional artistic production. Undoubtedly, tremendous creativity and innovation characterized the years leading up to World War I, especially 1910–14. Cubism achieved recognition in Paris, sparking new artistic directions in France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Russia. Art’s more expressionistic manifestations were at an equally momentous stage in Germany and Austria; Kandinsky wrote his influential treatise On the Spiritual in Art in late 1911 (published 1912), and abstraction took hold. The Great Upheaval: Modern Art from the Guggenheim Collection, 1910–1918 features more than 100 works from the museum’s holdings, attesting to this period of collaboration, interchange, synthesis, and innovation. Luis Camnitzer
Luis Camnitzer was born in Germany in 1937, grew up in Montevideo, Uruguay and has lived and worked in New York since 1964. He received Guggenheim Fellowships in 1961 and 1982 and, has made his mark internationally not only as an artist but as a critic, educator and art theorist. Formally allied with the American Conceptualists of the 1960s and 1970s, over the past 50 years Camnitzer has developed an essentially autonomous oeuvre. Through his art Camnitzer often plays with the role of audience as silent witness and accomplice, within the arts as well as politics, often drawing on his youth in Montevideo under a repressive government that the international community allowed to persist. LAS GUITARRAS DE PICASSO. 1912-1914:
This exhibit focuses on Pablo Picasso’s cardboard and sheet-metal Guitar sculptures, and the incandescent period of material and structural innovation these sculptures bracket in the artist’s long career. The exhibition takes as its point of departure Picasso’s first Guitar construction, a sculpture made between October and December 1912. Cobbled together from cardboard, paper, string, and wire—materials he cut, folded, threaded, and glued— Picasso’s silent instrument resembled no sculpture that had ever been seen before. Its creation coincided with Picasso’s embrace of a wide range of what were then unconventional materials, including cardboard,newspaper, wallpaper, sheet music, and sand. In 1914 the artist reiterated his fragile, papery Guitar construction in more fixed and durable sheet-metal form. In the early 1970s Picasso donated both works to The Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition will be on view through June 6, 2011. Visit moma.org

The MET MUSEUM is featuring about thirty Andean tunics drawn from the Museum's collection, as well as loans from the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., and from a private collection, the exhibition will examine the form of the tunic, which held an important cultural place in Andean South America for centuries, particularly in Peru and northern Bolivia. Textiles, a much developed art form there in ancient times, were themselves valued as wealth, and tunics were among the most treasured of tex-

El padre del Arte Pop, Andy Warhol, ya tiene una estátua justo donde se paraba tan a menudo a repartir copias de su revista, Interview. The Andy Monument, creado por el artista Rob Pruitt, es de unos 10 pies de altura, en cromo, muy a los 70. Andy lleva al cuello su cámara Polaroid y en su mano derecha, su acostumbrada bolsa de Bloomingdale's. La latas de Campbell's Soups no tardaron en aparecer en la base de la estatua con firmas y fotografías de Andy, mientras que super star Ultra Violet, Rob Pruitt y personas que le conocieron hablaban y recordaban eventos de su vida. En efecto, estábamos justo al lado del edificio en donde se ubicaba la última 'Factory' y donde creó muchos de sus obras, en la Broadway con la calle 17 (que hoy alberga una tienda Petco). Estábamos no muy lejos, menos de una cuadra, de la 'factory' anterior en donde fue casi asesinado por Valerie Solanas. Aunque no conocí a Andy, si tuve la oportunidad de conocer a unos cuantos íntimos amigos del artista, allá por 1993-1994. En aquel entonces, estaba recién llegado a Nueva York y recuerdo vivamente mis visitas a la casa y la oficina de JED JOHNSON, uno de los novios de Andy Warhol. Gran diseñador y un tío super sencillo y amable. Asi que Andy Warhol fue uno de mis primero encuentros con Nueva York. Como él, muchos venimos a encontrarnos, a superarnos y a dejar nuestra marca. El monumento a Andy estará allí hasta el 2 de Octubre. If you ask me, que Andy se quede donde está. Broadway / 17th St. Union Square, NYC.

LA FIESTA SEMANAL EN EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO Como les dije hace unos días, Tespis Magazine y Latino Events son ahora Media Partners de El Museo del Barrio y en particular de su nueva fiesta semanal WEPA Wednesdays!. WEPA Wednesdays se llevará a cabo todos los miércoles de 69pm, desde ahora hasta el mes de Junio, 2011. Eventos inesperados le añaden sabor a la vida. Mi encuentro, fortuito, con el Monumento a Andy en Union Sq., me dió la dea para la portada de este mes. Además, Andy fue uno de mis primeros contactos con aquello llamado Nueva York. Yo era un recién llegado. Tomarle fotos al primer monumento de Andy en la ciudad fue como una recapitulación. Una afirmación. Las fotos asi lo demuestran! :) La lista de eventos culturales está muy apetecible. Veamos: Las Tunicas de los Andes sigue en el Met Museum y además se añade una retrospectiva de los didujos de Richard Serra. El Museo del Barrio sigue mostrándonos a Luis Canmitzer y, como siempre, los esperamos a todos en la Fiesta WEPA! de todos los miércoles! Una muestra de no perdérsela: The Great Upheaval en el Museo Guggenheim. Los festivales de cine son dos este mes: El Tribeca Film Festival y el Habana Film Fest New York, además de nuevos estrenos. En fin, un poco de arte, de teatro, de cine o de música en la Nueva York Latina. Que disfruten este mes de Abril! Y bienvenido el calorcito! Alex Guerrero
