Thomas Edison State College Foundation

gr atefully acknowledges its generous donors

We are deeply grateful to our many alumni, friends, students, mentors, staff and board members that generously supported the Thomas Edison State College Foundation during 2013. While gifts vary in size, all gifts are significant and help build a strong platform for the College’s initiatives.

Ways to Give There are many ways to make your tax-deductible contribution to the Thomas Edison State College Foundation. Make an Immediate Impact Cash gifts – the simplest and easiest gifts you can make – support vital areas of funding within the College. Another way to build your support is through corporate matching gift programs at your employer. These programs help to bolster your philanthropic intent by doubling or tripling the impact of your gift. Your donation whether it is a one-time gift, a recurring gift or a matching gift plays an integral role in helping to support the greatest needs of the College and our students. To make your gift today or to learn if your company matches gifts, visit alumni.tesc.edu. Grow Your Contribution Over Time Gift pledges are formal statements of intention to make a gift over a period of time. Each payment on a pledge is eligible for an income tax deduction. Gift pledges are often used when supporting an endowed gift, a gift that is invested and generates income for the Foundation in perpetuity. Endowed gifts can be established with a minimum donation of $25,000 to be gifted at once or over a period of time and can be directed to scholarships or special programs at the College.

Create a Lasting Legacy Planned gifts encompass a broad range of both short and long term gift options designed to offer a way to support the College’s mission for generations while meeting your current financial needs. In the short term, donating gifts of appreciated securities, stocks and bonds provide immediate tax advantage. In the long term, naming Thomas Edison State College Foundation as a beneficiary in your will, insurance policy or retirement account ensures financial resources for the College while alleviating the tax burden on your family. For more information about making a planned gift see Page 19; you may also contact Misty Isak at misak@tesc.edu or (609) 984-1588 at ext. 2077. Corporate and Foundation Grants Corporations and foundations have provided generous grant support to fund programs and advanced technologies for students at Thomas Edison State College. These gifts reflect the philanthropic spirit embraced by our friends and partners. To find out more about corporate and foundation grant support, contact Fred Brand at fbrand@tesc.edu or (609) 984-1588, ext. 2093.

2 | THOMAS EDISON STATE COLLEGE FOUNDATION

message from the

chair

Dear Alumni, Students and Friends, On behalf of the Thomas Edison State College Foundation, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to each of you who provided financial support this year. I am honored to present this year’s Honor Roll of Donors. Thanks to your support, this has been an extraordinary year. The Thomas Edison State College Foundation saw record levels of giving by Board members, alumni, friends and employees. We have also received significant grants from a number of foundations and organizations, demonstrating their strong endorsement of the work the College is doing for our students and, by extension, for our communities.

“We are committed to empowering our students, expanding their potential and making a positive difference in their lives.”

The Foundation continues to support the College by investing in new programs using the resources you provide through your gifts and contributions. This past year, your donations strengthened the technology curriculum at the College, improving ease of access to courses from various media sources and devices. It was also with your support that the Foundation developed the new Masters of Science in Information Technology degree program that will launch during the upcoming year. This degree was funded with the largest grant to the College in the history of the Foundation, directly supporting a key strategic priority for the College. In addition, almost sixty students benefited from scholarship support last year because of donations from corporations, foundations, and individuals like you. Your contributions to date have helped the College and the Foundation to thrive. Your continued support is critical to the future of the College and will fund the development of new programs that directly impact students and enhance the College’s reputation for excellence. At a time when there is a national outcry against the rising costs in higher education, the College continues to offer the lowest cost option to earn a bachelor’s degree in New Jersey, creating an environment where 80 percent of our recent graduates have been able to complete their degrees without incurring any student loan debt. The future of our nation depends upon many things. Among them is a highly educated and productive populace. Thomas Edison State College is committed to empowering our students, expanding their potential, making a positive difference in their lives and promoting the public welfare in building this capacity. Sincerely,

Brian T. Maloney Chair, Thomas Edison State College Foundation

> Nursing Education Center ($12.726 million): This project will transform the blighted Glen Cairn Arms site at Calhoun and West State streets in Trenton into a state-of-the-art nursing education center and home to the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing. The 34,700 square foot building will include a new nursing simulation laboratory, lecture halls, conference rooms and space for a testing center. This was the only project the College applied for that is covered by the Building Our Future Bond Act.

> Kelsey Building and Townhouse Upgrades

($1.913 million):

This project will upgrade and renovate the landmark Kelsey Building and Townhouse complex, including the reconfiguration of existing offices to maximize space and create new resources and replacing the roof and mechanical systems.

> 102-104 West State Street Improvements

($1.4 million):

This project will create the Center for Learning and Technology at Thomas Edison State College in the 12,500 square foot building located across the street from the Kelsey Building. The site was formerly home of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association.

> Instructional Nursing Equipment ($585,000):

This project will fund the purchase of instructional equipment for the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing to support educational technology in the nursing simulation lab and other technical aspects of the program.

Partnership with Saylor Foundation Delivers New Pathway for Degree

Foundation Funds Development of Master’s Degree in Information Technology

Thomas Edison State College has developed a new pathway that allows students to complete an Associate in Science in Business Administration degree by taking free, open online courses from the Saylor Foundation that are aligned with the College’s prior learning assessment program.

The Thomas Edison State College Foundation has awarded a grant to the School of Applied Science and Technology to develop a new graduate program in Information Technology.

“In the past two years, there has been much debate about how open online courses benefit students,” said Marc Singer, vice provost of the College’s Center for the Assessment of Learning. “Our program enables students to take high-quality open courses at no cost and then apply what they learned in those open courses by taking our assessments. This process allows them to earn credit that can be applied to a degree program at Thomas Edison State College.”

Known as the Open Course option, students earn credit by either passing a TECEP® or other examination program aligned with a Saylor course or successfully completing a portfolio assessment that documents they have gained the college-level knowledge aligned with the degree requirement. More than 20 Saylor courses are part of the Open Course option, as are the College’s new online prior learning assessment courses, PLA-100 and PLA-200. The program is not limited to students interested in earning credits toward the Associate in Science in Business Administration degree, as students can apply credits through the program to most bachelor’s degree programs at the College to satisfy general education elective or free elective requirements. “This is an interesting option for adult learners who prefer to work independently, enjoy credit-by-exam programs and are interested in prior learning assessment,” said Dr. Michael Williams, dean of the School of Business and Management. “This model offers students a more flexible, efficient way of completing their associate degree that has the potential of saving time and tuition dollars.” The Open Course option grew from an earlier effort funded by the Foundation in 2012 that supported the College’s efforts to establish competency-based methods that enable students to leverage open courses to earn college credit.

The $185,000 grant will fund the creation of an online Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) degree program as well as a new area of study in information technology that will be offered under the Master of Science in Applied Science and Technology degree program. The program is being designed to prepare students to develop, implement, operate and manage information systems in a variety of organizations.

Dr. John O. Aje Dean of the School of Applied Science and Technology at Thomas Edison State College

“The development of the MSIT is consistent with the College’s strategic plan and its call for developing new graduate programs that respond to the needs of the global marketplace,” said Brian Maloney, chair of the Foundation Board of Directors.“We are excited about this new program as the demand is growing for graduate programs designed to meet the needs of IT professionals.” According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the total number of master’s degrees in information technology conferred in the United States has grown by 162 percent from 2008 to 2012. While the number of degrees conferred has grown significantly, the number of institutions offering programs has not, which indicates an opportunity in the market. “I am honored that the Foundation selected this project to be funded,” said Dr. John O. Aje, dean of the School of Applied Science and Technology.“Our graduates will gain a broad technical understanding of current and emerging technologies in the IT field, a high level knowledge of systems engineering concepts and a solid foundation in the technological basis of the Internet.”

“I began my career seven years ago and aspired to earn my BSN within 10 years of becoming a professional nurse. I chose to work as a per diem nurse so that I could be available to my family but, unfortunately, I do not receive any type of tuition reimbursement from my employer. Receiving the W. Cary Edwards scholarship has afforded me the opportunity to complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing without having to work extra shifts to defray the costs. Having scholarships like this one allows students to focus on their goals of completing their degree, rather than worry about how to cover the expenses involved.” Jennifer Gorman, RN BSN ’14

“Over a 26-year military career I consistently witnessed first-hand the transformative value that higher education can have on military members, their spouses and children. Having recently joined Thomas Edison State College after military retirement, I was very pleased to find a cause dedicated to that end for the adult student, the Thomas Edison State College Foundation. I passionately believe that citizens are at their best when they are dedicated to a cause that is greater than their self-interests, a cause that is noble and a cause that helps the public good. I believe every contribution to the Thomas Edison State College Foundation is more than just a monetary transaction; it’s an investment for our collective good that molds better scholars and citizens — a truly noble undertaking and I’m proud to be a small part of it.” Warren “Lee” Wofford Director of Military Enrollment Management Thomas Edison State College

Planned Giving – Funding for the Future Planned gifts, such as bequests and life income, can be an advantageous way to provide future support to a charity. You can take care of yourself and take care of Thomas Edison State College. The Foundation welcomes gifts made through different planned giving arrangements. These arrangements can: > Provide for you or your loved ones > Entitle you to charitable gift or estate tax deductions > Fulfill philanthropic goals > Increase spendable income > Enable you to leave a legacy for Thomas Edison State College Choosing the right planned gift depends on your personal circumstances and financial goals.

Bequest and Estate Planning You may make a bequest or gift through your estate by including a provision in your will or living trust, or by naming Thomas Edison State College Foundation (TESCF) as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. The amount left to the Foundation (or any charity) can be expressed as a dollar amount or as a percentage of the assets to be given.

Life Income Gifts A life income gift allows you to give assets to TESCF while providing yourself or others with income for a period of time before the Foundation is permitted to use your gift. You may make a life income gift by transferring securities, cash or other property to TESCF. The Foundation then manages the investment of the assets and pays an income to you, your designated beneficiaries or both. For more information about planned giving opportunities that benefit Thomas Edison State College, contact Misty Isak at misak@tesc.edu or (609) 984-1588, ext. 2077.

24 | THOMAS EDISON STATE COLLEGE FOUNDATION

in remembrance : m aurice t. perilli It is with great sadness that Thomas Edison State College and the Thomas Edison State College Foundation acknowledge the loss of Maurice T. Perilli, a longtime supporter of the College and member of the Thomas Edison State College Foundation Board of Directors, who passed away on Nov. 25, 2013. “Maury was one of the most important business and community leaders in Mercer County,” said John P. Thurber, vice president for Public Affairs at Thomas Edison State College. “His service to our community touched many lives and his commitment to our College played an important role in our ability to expand programs and grow enrollments.” Perilli joined the Foundation Board in 1993 and served as a dedicated member until the time of his passing. He established the Perilli Family Endowment benefitting the Foundation and was the 2000 recipient of the Spirit of Edison Family Award. In 2001, he received an honorary degree from the College. One of the hallmarks of Perilli’s life was his outstanding contributions to business and civic organizations. A World War II Coast Guard veteran, Perilli served as chairman of the board of Roma Federal Savings Bank, where for years he oversaw operations of purchasing, human resources, security and building and property staff. Prior to his service with the bank, he owned his own printing and publishing business. His civic work includes various activities in Hamilton Township, where he served as mayor, police commissioner and a member of the township’s Committee, Zoning Board of Adjustment and Planning Board. In addition, Perilli served on numerous boards for hospitals, charities and civic associations.

“His service to our community touched many lives and his commitment to our College played an important role in our ability to expand progr ams and grow enrollments.” John P. Thurber, vice president for Public Affairs at Thomas Edison State College
