Success Story Continues In December 2021 the Royal Terberg Group (RTG) became the sole shareholder of the Terberg RosRoca Group (TRRG). Following the acquisition of Ros Roca Environment S.L. our journey is a real success story. Since then many manufacturing centres have increased their capacity, and two completely new facilities have opened in the United States (Dennis Eagle Inc.) and the United Arab Emirates (Terberg RosRoca Vehicle Manufacturing LLC). The environmental division has also experienced strong growth in the provision of after-sales service. As of 1 January 2022 Terberg RosRoca Group was rebranded as Terberg Environmental (TE), a divisional brand that we first employed prior to the acquisition in 2016. In the field of Electrification - a key element in our sustainability strategy - we are taking major steps and I am very pleased to see the synergy between the business divisions around RTG. Our eCollect is the only fully electric refuse collection vehicle (eRCV) with a chassis, body and bin lift from the same supplier. Other Terberg divisions also introduced electric vehicles and systems. Terberg Special Vehicles have already launched their third generation Electric Shunting Tractor, Terberg Techniek sold their first Electric Power Take-off (ePTO) units for the construction industry and Terberg Kinglifter developed its first Electric Truck-mounted Forklift. These developments will help our customers reduce CO2 emissions, other pollutants and noise levels around the world. Terberg is family business, focussed on the long term. Sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of our products are therefore extremely important. We work to meet these objectives whilst also providing a good working environment for operatives using our equipment daily. Having members of the fifth Terberg family generation working in our business, after gaining valuable experience elsewhere, supports the continuity of our operations for the future.

Terberg Environmental has been very successful in growing its markets in recent years. Our new venture in Dubai opened for business in the middle of the pandemic. That presented a few challenges but in the end our dedicated team worked hard and everything went ahead as planned. This facility assembles refuse collection bodies supplied as ‘flat packs’ by our plant in Tàrrega, Spain. The company also provides after-sales support, servicing and spare parts to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The Dennis Eagle Inc. facility in Summerville in the US is busy manufacturing the ProView low entry chassis cab. These are fully tailored to the North American market, combining our UK designed and built walk-through cab with local engines, drivetrain and other components to facilitate easy regional maintenance. The high comfort and unparalleled visibility from the cab has been greatly received by U.S. customers. We also offer a dual-steer variant for driver-only side-loading operations. Our growing service operations, including our own Terberg Connect remote diagnostics and telematics, helps customers maximize vehicle uptime and do more with their fleet. We are now establishing strategically located service centres to support products from several divisions, for greater efficiency and to give customers a local, single point of contact. Like all businesses we have to deal with supply chain challenges which affect the delivery time and price of our products. The pandemic also continues to have an impact. Our 3,000+ employees have worked hard to deal with these challenges, and we would like to thank them for that. We also thank our customers for their understanding. All Terberg businesses pride themselves on listening to their customers and giving them the best possible support in line with their needs. The fact that we have served many of our customers for decades confirms that this approach results in great customer loyalty which again we are truly thankful for. Award winning eCollect proves itself in the market Our all-electric eCollect is gaining further traction in the RCV market with production volumes continuing to grow and eCollect vehicles now operating in every corner of the UK. Fifteen months after the first eCollect rolled off the production line at our flagship subsidiary Dennis Eagle in Warwick, UK, more than 50 eRCVs are now in operation, working for both public and private sector operators and collecting a range of waste streams on both urban and rural rounds. Feedback from the market has been overwhelmingly positive. Outstanding efficiency, quicker rounds and much quieter operations are just some of the benefits appreciated by fleet managers, drivers and crews, residents, other road users and local politicians. And that’s in addition to the key

benefits of zero emissions and operational cost savings. In Wales, the Welsh Government has provided grants to speed up the transition of local authority RCV fleets to ultra-low emission vehicles. Newport City Council was first to take advantage of this, receiving the first eCollect in February with two more headed to Cardiff and Powys in March. Both Newport and Cardiff put their vehicles to work on urban rounds but Powys County Council has used its eCollect in both urban and rural locations across the county. Part of the Welsh Government deal involved local authorities loaning eCollects to neighbouring councils so that they could witness the benefits at first hand, additionally Dennis Eagle conducted a series of vehicle demonstrations across Wales. These two initiatives have already resulted in further orders from seven of the 22 Welsh local authorities for a total of 23 vehicles to date with more in the pipeline. >

across the UK when she told Meridian’s TV News that it was the first of many electric RCVs the council would be buying. She added: “We’re learning from this one – it’s going fantastically well so far. The aim is to get another six in and then replace the rest of the fleet in the next two years.” On the south coast of England, BCP Council had trialled an eCollect in 2020 and now has four operating in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
Cardiff placed orders for five more within weeks of their first eRCV going into operation. And Newport became second only operator in the UK to order remanufactured eCollects. These vehicles have been converted from conventional RCVs that were already operating at Newport City Council. Dennis Eagle offered a service to swap out all the diesel-related components with the eCollect electric drive system, battery packs and cab to produce the zero-emission eRCVs. In Ireland, Brian Bolger is Group Commercial Fleet Director for the Beauparc Group which operates in the energy, waste and recycling sectors in both Ireland and the UK and has more than 200 RCVs in its fleet. One of the companies in the group ‘Panda’ already has three eCollects at work in Dublin, emptying 1,000 bins a day on both domestic waste and recycling rounds. “It has been our intention for a long time to have an electric fleet on our urban collections and now we’ve seen the vehicles in action we are very reassured,” said Brian. “We’ve been running our first three eCollects for a few months now and are impressed with what we’ve seen. We have already ordered more. I am confident eCollects will figure prominently in our different fleets but it’s not just about the product. Support is crucial, especially when a new product is launched. We have a long-standing relationship with Dennis Eagle and the great support we’ve always had from them has continued with this electric vehicle.”

With another eCollect already operating with the partly state-owned company Bord na Móna, the vehicle has made an immediate impact in Ireland. Within a few weeks of the first arriving, it had won the Electric Truck Category (Heavy) at Fleet Transport Irish Green Commercial Awards 2022. And back in England, it won the Excellence in Innovation Award at the letsrecyclelive event. Reading Borough Council put its first eCollect into action in September 2021 and Adele Barnett-Ward, Lead Councillor for Neighbourhoods and the Community, summed up the approach of local authorities
As the order book for eCollect continues to grow so does the dedicated production line at Dennis Eagle. The line has been significantly scaled up to cope with the increasing market demand. Until now, all the eCollects produced have been a zero-carbon alternative to Dennis Eagle’s best-selling diesel RCV, the 6x2, 26-tonne rear-loader. But other models are already in the pipeline. Like the original eCollect, these variants will be rigorously tested before going into production and are eagerly awaited by Dennis Eagle’s customers.

Electrification in other divisions YT203EV Terminal Tractor Terberg Special Vehicles Terberg Benschop, specialist in the development and production of terminal tractors for ports, distribution centres and industrial sites, has introduced a new generation of electric tractors. The engine performance is comparable to that of a diesel engine and customers can choose from a range of battery pack options. The YT203EV is working hard to help port terminals and distribution centres reduce their emissions.
E-TKL Truck-mounted Forklift Terberg Kinglifter Terberg Kinglifter is currently testing its first electric Truck-mounted Forklift, the E-TKL. It offers all the functionality of a diesel unit but now with zero emissions at the point of use, less noise and lower operating and maintenance costs. The lifting capacity is 2,500 kg with a maximum lifting height of 4m. The E-TKL can be supplied with single or all-wheel drive and with four-way steering to drive sideways when carrying long loads.
E-PTO Electric Power Take-off Terberg Techniek Modification company Terberg Techniek developed an electric and electric-hydrogen power take-off unit for the electrification of diesel-driven concrete mixers and cranes on trucks, and of excavators. As a result, these can work as clean and quiet vehicles in inner-city areas, which greatly contributes to making the construction sector more sustainable.

New facility boosts Terberg Matec UK When a thriving business outgrows its premises, there is only one thing to do: find a bigger, better base. That’s exactly what Terberg Matec UK has done and the impact has been remarkable.
Our Warrington-based subsidiary moved its market-leading bin-lift business into a new purposedesigned 28,000 square feet (2,600m2) facility last year. And by remaining in the town in the industrial heartland of north-west England, it vitally retained the staff expertise that had helped it achieve such success at its previous location.

Service, parts and sales are now all together. Our workshops deal with repairs, refurbishments, retrofits and new vehicles all on one site and we run 15 field-based >

Rob Colby explained, “Our workforce has been fundamental to our success. They have always been very loyal, very positive and very supportive, with the determination and the flexible approach needed to achieve the best for our customers. And those same qualities were also put to good use in preparing for our new facility.
The new facility brings workshops and offices under one roof, including 4,000 square feet (370m2) of office space. The workshops themselves can accommodate up to 13 vehicles at once. “The purpose built spare parts facility has has increased stock holding of OM parts and means that we can now store up to 100 new bin lifts at any one time.” This also improves workshop efficiency and helps reduce the lead-in time for customers. The location itself benefits from excellent transport links through a network of motorways as well as convenient airports and rail links. But the key point of remaining in the area was that

Different leaders at different levels took on responsibilities to make this major project succeed and it really felt as if they owned it. “The result has been a tangible boost to morale.” The move has also allowed the company to introduce a raft of innovations. Many of these involve sustainability which is not only at the heart of the new operation but is also in keeping with the company’s core values.
“New energy efficient heating and lighting systems are in place along with measures to achieve a paperless existence. These, together with a revised waste strategy, help us in our ambition to ultimately be a net zero company”. “The whole vibe of the new building is brighter and airier,” said Rob. “The workshops are new, clean and more spacious than before and very well organised for maximum efficiency, as you’d expect in a facility purpose-designed by people who know our sector well. “The offices are modern, comfortable and welcoming. A lot of the furniture is actually made from recycled materials which is not only in keeping with the company ethos but is also genuinely appreciated by the staff. “And the whole facility has a strong corporate image with colours, signage and branding all making it feel special, which it is; it was designed by us, to be used by us. “Overall, the look, the feel and the atmo sphere of our new home is really appreciated by our customers too. We’ve been proudly showing the facility off to them on frequent customer tours and the feedback we have picked up after their visits has all been very positive. “So, as well as improving our operational efficiency, which was the initial reason behind the development, this valuable investment from the company is also paying dividends among staff and customers alike.”

Recycling is an essential part of society’s duty of care for the environment but to conduct recycling collections in an environmentally sensitive way has presented a significant challenge in the past. For domestic services, collecting multiple separated waste streams in one visit using one vehicle was an important goal. And Terberg Matec UK successfully achieved this by developing the Kerbloader® vehicle.

• A noise-reducing system is fitted to the glass collection compartments. And glass is unloaded at the rear to reduce the risk of tyre-shredding. • Discharge of materials is controlled from inside the cab which is both quicker and safer for the driver and crew. • Stillages are removed with a fork-lift truck to avoid the “pushing-and-pulling” injuries associated with manual handling. • LED lighting illuminates the working area. LEDs in internal compartments help avoid crosscontamination. • There is also a colour HMI touch-screen in the cab for the vehicle and diagnostics systems.
With the all electric Kerbloader EV, Terberg Matec UK has considered the key aspects of environmental care and produced a zero emissions version of their successful kerbside sort recycling vehicle While still providing outstanding operational and cost efficiency, it doesn’t produce greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change or the nitrogen oxide gases and particulates associated with local air pollution. Instead of being mounted on a diesel chassis, the Kerbloader EV body and control systems have been re-engineered to create a version that will integrate with an electric chassis. Everything that was powered by the diesel engine is now powered by the electric chassis. Just as its diesel-powered cousin provides a durable, safe and flexible solution to one-pass recycling collections, so too does the Kerbloader EV but in a cleaner, quieter way. It collects up to seven different waste streams and keeps them separate, with overall payloads of around 3.2 tonnes. It is robust, easy to load, quick to unload and discharge and it is safe. And Terberg Matec UK’s attention to detail means the Kerbloader EV retains all the valued credentials of the original vehicle. These include: • High grade stainless steel and composite GRP board to make the Kerbloader EV corrosionfree. • The automated plastic and can-press system and heavy-duty card-press significantly improve payload and efficiency.

The result is a highly efficient and manoeuvrable one-pass recycling vehicle which will help local authorities and other operators reduce their carbon footprint and also meet increasingly urgent air pollution targets. The electric motor is also much quieter than the diesel engine. Reduced noise means collections can be made from sensitive locations at different times without causing disturbance. And better acceleration and torque in these typically stopstart operations can speed up collections to increase operational efficiency. The Kerbloader EV has just successfully completed trials with the local authority in Anglesey in Wales and the feedback has been excellent. Among the key points they highlighted were the almost silent running and reduced vibration which provided much greater crew comfort while the quieter operation and cleaner air benefitted everyone in the vicinity. Now, as the first customers place orders, the arrival of the Kerbloader EV means the future of one-pass recycling in the UK is assured as diesel engines are phased out.

And with environmental issues a clear driving force in Terberg Matec UK’s operations, the Worksop facility which produces its recycling vehicles has also been transformed with sustainability in mind. Full LED lighting, energy recovery systems, solar panels and the full recycling of materials are among the initiatives constantly improving its environmental credentials. And of course, the company is ready to turn its attention to its other vehicles. “We already have plans drawn up to provide electric versions of the ORUS, the Plastic Bodied Utility Vehicle (PBUV) and the Olympus Mini,” added Will Marzano.

New Elite+ cab focused on drivers and crews In the last 20 years, refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) have evolved almost beyond recognition. The changes they’ve undergone reflects the world’s rapidly changing attitude towards our environment.

In that period, engineers at our UK subsidiary Dennis Eagle have slashed the resultant emissions and revolutionised safety for our low entry chassis. And the next item on their agenda? Humans. More precisely, they have set about improving the working environment of drivers and crews. Underpinning this is the principle that efficient waste collection operations need human and machine working in harmony. The fruit of their labours is the Elite+ cab, except it is more than a cab: it is a modern workstation. “We’ve produced an outstanding working environment for both drivers and crews,” said Dennis Eagle Sales and Marketing Director Richard Taylor. “By making it quieter, safer, easier to use, more convenient and comfortable, we are helping them to feel valued and more positive about their important roles. “And the benefits to employers will be felt across the full spectrum of their operations, from increased productivity to staff retention, improved safety and operational efficiency.” The introduction of the Elite+ comes as driver shortages challenge operations in almost all of the company’s markets. Customer feedback in the UK has been very positive. The RCV has all the safety features of the Elite 6, which was independently shown to provide the best direct vision of any truck in the UK.

Now enhanced and refined, Dennis Eagle has taken its market leader and made it even better. And above all, the Elite+ has been ergonomically refined to give the driver more control than ever. Those controls and the in-cab switch bank are more intuitively arranged and have a very userfriendly touch and feel thanks to new materials with improved finishes.
We’ve produced an outstanding working environment for both drivers and crews.....by making it quieter, safer, easier to use, more convenient and comfortable. The seat and the steering column are more adjustable, enabling drivers to position them precisely to suit their own body shape and size. And the in-cab screen is mounted on a ball and socket joint so it can be positioned precisely to suit them. offering true walkthrough flexibility. And the driving seat puts drivers at eye-level with other road users so they can make direct eye contact. Increased sound insulation ensures the cab provides a much quieter environment. Both Standard and Narrow vehicles have driver +1, +2 or +3 seating options but now each crew member has an individual seat instead of a shared bench. This helps define their own space and increases comfort.
Dennis Eagle responded to the most popular customer request of all; they’ve provided more cup holders. The outer seat has been recessed slightly, making it even easier getting in and out and this also increases the driver’s near-side view. Along with larger rear windows on both sides to further improve direct vision, making what was the safest truck on the UK’s roads even safer. Outside, the Elite+ looks reassuringly familiar and is designed not to intimidate other road users. Modern working practices have been catered for, such as plenty of USB ports for charging

electronic devices. And there’s more storage room in the header locker. The Elite+ is being phased in across all diesel RCV models, with existing orders fulfilled to meet customers’ preferences. The first were delivered to three Nottinghamshire councils – Broxstowe Borough Council, Erewash Borough Council and Newark and Sherwood District Council – for pre-launch assessment. The trio of councils gave the Elite+ a resoun ding vote of confidence. Broxtowe’s Transport and Stores Manager Roger Wakefield said: “The drivers report the switches and controls are somewhat easier to use. The new materials and the way they are finished make them very responsive to touch and control. And the new arrangement of the switches is very welcome. “They say the Elite+ is more comfortable. The steering column and seat are very adjustable, along with the arrangement of all the controls and switches as well as the in-cab screen. “Getting in and out is easier as the outside seat is slightly set back, giving you more room as you step into the cab. The crew appreciated this even more as they are the ones getting in and out most often. It’s all this attention to detail that makes a real difference and is really appreciated.” And in tune with this sentiment, Dennis Eagle responded to the most popular customer request of all; they’ve provided more cup holders.

Benoit Boton joined the company, then known as Eurovoirie, 13 years ago having previously studied mechanical engineering and enjoying success as a fleet manager for a waste disposal contractor. Benoit was appointed General Manager in November 2021 and is based at the Terberg Matec France (TMSAS) site in Lisses.
Benoit recalls “I remember visiting Ros Roca as a customer with some colleagues, we were buying a very efficient Twin Pack RCV with a Terberg split automatic bin lift. Now, 18 years later, some of these units are still working perfectly near Nantes!

Our sales have grown steadily over the years. When I started here we supplied around 150 refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) annually – now we sell more than double that, the majority of which are configured with Olympus bodies and Terberg bin lift systems. We also supply Speedline side loaders from Terberg HS, small OR and ORUS RCVs, and Hyva cranes for our Olympus Crane RCVs that have a special chute at the top. These are used to empty large underground waste containers, which is a real growth market. In the past, we also supplied road sweepers but we are now completely focussed on RCVs, related equipment and servicing. I am proud to manage a motivated team and it is a pleasure to work for the Terberg family business.” >

Present throughout France The main headquarters for Terberg Matec France is in Lisses, south of Paris and was set up in 2020 with offices and a large maintenance workshop. The move also provided an opportunity to redevelop businesses processes to improve quality and efficiency. The Lisses site serves customers with consultancy, RCV sales, spare parts sales, technical support and servicing. Customer support is also delivered from a workshop just outside the historic city of Reims along with a new service workshop opened in Nantes in the west of France in April 2022. Another workshop in Nîmes, in the south of France is scheduled to open later this year with plans to open more workshops in the next few years. A support network of 12 mobile technicians and 16 service partners complete the strategic plan to support the company’s growth throughout France. TMSAS sites

Household waste is mostly collected in individual bins but we see a growing trend towards larger underground and aboveground containers, our Olympus with Crane Chute answers that demand perfectly. Side loaders are a niche market here. At the request of some customers our colleagues at Terberg HS developed special versions of the Speedline Twin and PPK HSS700 for the French market. We have worked closely with HS to also arrange certification by UTAC to ensure seamless approval of their vehicles, in the same way as for the vehicles from the Ros Roca plant in Spain. The communication between manufacturing centres and salespeople is a key factor to our success and this works well within Terberg Environmental. In recent years we’ve witnessed a growing demand for CNG and electric vehicles, especially around Paris. We have already

supplied some 20 Olympus bodies fitted to Renault D26 ZE electric chassis.”
Customers Terberg Matec France has a fairly even split between municipal and private sector customers. Larger cities often have their own refuse collection operations, while smaller ones work with contractors. These contractors include both large international organisations and national operators of varying size. Benoit “Many municipalities also perform their own servicing while contractors are more likely to contract that out to us. The demand for service contracts has increased in recent years, so we are opening more service workshops. Our success in recent years is due to our highly motivated team, our technical skills and positive attitude and, of course, our good products. We ask that our staff are always respectful and listen carefully. Our sales staff have in-depth technical knowledge, if a customer has a technical question, their sales contact can usually provide answers without having to consult our engineers. For example, our sales staff know all about body types, wheelbase, PTO, which options fit which body, etc. but to have this level of expertise

means that our teams have to communicate effectively with each other, so everybody is thoroughly familiar with our products. The number of tenders we have won in the past year is proof that this strategy is paying off. Obviously the products need to be excellent too - our customers tell us that what we supply is really robust and engineered very well.”
Recent developments and the future Benoit “Thankfully, the pandemic had a relatively minor impact on business, we actually received a great volume of orders in 2021 for delivery this year. The supply chain for our own products continues to work well, but we do see extended lead times for chassis. This provides challenges for our manufacturing centres but our colleagues there are superb at optimising the whole process to minimise disruption. We are looking forward to the continuing expansion of Terberg Matec France in 2022 and are already making plans for the years ahead.”

Refuse collection vehicles (RCV) TMNL offers complete RCVs based on Olympus rear loader bodies from the Terberg manufacturing centres in Tàrrega (Spain) and Warwick (UK) installed on leading European manufacturers chassis’, with bin lift systems from Terberg Machines. The range includes fully electrically powered bodies and bin lifts, using a dedicated battery system, or power via an electric chassis. This reduces pollutant and noise emissions - particularly important when operating in built-up areas. TMNL also supplies Speedline side loader bodies (see page 38) from German sister company Terberg HS. These units only require a single driver/operator, ensuring highly efficient refuse collection. These quality products from Switzerland are highly efficient and the range includes fully electric models. This market segment is complemented by KaiserMoro sewer cleaning and jetting trucks, and suction trucks to empty road gullies.

decade that resulted from both organic growth and acquisitions. We now operate from three locations: IJsselstein (head office, sales and RCV after-sales), Geldermalsen (cleansing after-sales) and De Kwakel (RCV, cleansing and crane after-sales) and we have a fleet of mobile workshops. At first, TMNL was mostly known as a supplier of bin lifts only and a relatively small player in the Dutch market. collects 3000+ signals, from every part of the whole RCV and has a multi-antenna GPS receiver to determine the vehicle’s location and ensure reliable communications. Instead of simply gathering and transmitting data however, the module first processes the sensor information and transmits as required over 4G or even 3G/2G. The data is sent to a server where customers and our service department can access it via a standard web browser, without special apps. Using our bespoke UI, users can browse through pages displaying real-time information on sensor readings, switch settings, hydraulic and electric parameters, bin lift diagnostic displays, engine data and much more. With granular permission settings, more enabled users can also change settings, for example, a user can check and make setting changes to the whole RCV in real-time to configure the system to collect a different waste stream. Each customer will of course have different requirements, some will be interested in how their drivers perform, whereas others might be interested in how many bins are collected in a day, or perhaps the difference in data that can be found when comparing activities on two separate housing estates. The permutations of how our data can be used are infinite.

The wealth of information at hand can help managers optimise collection rounds and deliver a lower Total Cost of Operation (TCO). Service personnel can monitor the operation of the bin lift and body remotely, to support the RCV crew or in-house engineer. Our distributors often find it difficult to attract enough service engineers - with Terberg Connect their teams can more easily look after a large fleet. Customers do need to subscribe to Terberg Connect, but we are deliberately offering the service at a competitively low cost. Our multi-disciplined project team was responsible for the development of the Terberg Connect user interface, designed for a tablet or PC. Everything is very straightforward, you don’t need a manual, but some understanding of how the RCV works is required. Terberg Connect was designed with data security in mind and does not handle personal information so there are no GDPR data protection issues. Many operators use 3rd party fleet management software and are able to use an API to interface those systems to Terberg Connect. Our unique blend of bi-directional remote diagnostics, real-time vehicle data collection and tracking, proactive maintenance and

live alerts delivered via email mean that our customers (and Terberg engineers) have all the information they require in order to minimise downtime and maximise first-time fix rates. Our digital twin presents clear pictures of your RCVs with all relevant parameters of the bin lift, body and chassis. This information is a valuable tool for managers, in-house mechanics, and Terberg’s service department. It doesn’t matter if that person is 10,000 kms away or across the yard, it is like they are standing next to the machine connected via a cable. It is also not just that they are observing the system in operation, the users can diagnose an issue and make changes remotely. In future we aim to do even more. Instead of solving problems we want to prevent them. With failure trend analysis of data we can develop accurate predictive maintenance so parts are replaced before they fail - that’s something we are working on now. Terberg Connect is all about making life easier for our customers. It is also very popular with our distributors who operate rental fleets helping everyone to get the best out of the RCVs.

“We have been supplying Terberg equipment for a long time and the brand is now well recognised here. Our customers mostly use rear loaders, but we recently supplied two side loaders, a market that we expect to grow. I really like Terberg Connect, it is fitted to all automatic lifters that we supply and helps us provide better technical support. Sometimes I can solve an issue by just talking the customer through it on the phone, while I watch the vehicle parameters in real-time on my computer via its digital twin. For example, if we notice a sensor giving an unexpected reading, we can ask the mechanic that is physically with the equipment to swap it with an identical sensor elsewhere. Engineered in Europe proudly manufactured in the UAE The United Arab Emirates (UAE) consists of seven emirates in the Persian Gulf. Terberg Environmental (TE) has long had a presence in this market, and in 2020 took a strategic decision to establish a local subsidiary to build, supply and support refuse collection vehicles and other equipment. Terberg RosRoca Vehicle Manufacturing LLC (TRRVM) is located in Dubai Industrial City, almost equidistant between downtown Dubai and Abu Dhabi. There is an abundance of industry in this area which provides an effective supply chain, and the facility is easily reached by international visitors.

We started with an empty building and had to source and install everything from overhead cranes and welding kit through to computer mice. Fortunately, supported through it all by our parent company.”
Setting up this manufacturing centre was a great project, though made more difficult by the pandemic. We receive ‘flat pack’ RCV body kits from the Ros Roca plant in Tárrega, Spain. We assemble and weld the kits in the same type of jigs used in the European factories, have them shot blasted, and then spray paint them in-house. Finally we mount the bodies to a chassis of the customer’s choice and then fit bin lift systems from Terberg Machines. All of our production equipment is new and we work to European safety standards. We designed our facility by combining the best aspects

Product range TRRVM’s core product line is RCVs based on Olympus bodies with Terberg bin lifts. The company also supplies side loaders, hook loaders and skip loaders, including some equipment from OMB in Italy. These are supported by maintenance and repair services, either in the workshop or by the two mobile workshops, and spare parts supply. Jeremy “There are daily refuse collections and the vehicles can potentially operate for 20 hours a day. We believe that the high quality of our products and our support capability gives us a strong position in the market which is increasingly focussing on quality. Our slogan ‘Engineered in Europe - proudly manufactured in the UAE’ also appeals to many customers and of course the units are fully optimised for the local conditions here. Even the paint is specially selected for the climate. Refuse collection in the UAE is predominantly achieved using large bins and skips, from 1.1 m³ to 7 m³. There are also some 240 and 360 litre bins for single households.

Market Waste is collected by both public authorities and private contractors, most of which use our Olympus RCV units. Many operators service the equipment in-house, but interest in outsourcing service capability is growing, to meet that demand the TRRVM service workshop extends to over 1,000 m². In many countries, waste & recyclable materials are collected using rear loading RCV vehicles: the loading crew bring wheeled bins to the RCV and they are then emptied by the bin lift system. Terberg’s automatic bin lifts make this process superefficient, depending on local conditions, street layouts and waste strategies our Speedline range can offer greater efficiency. Rear loading collections can present physical demands on the operatives, therefore our Speedline side loader RCVs offer an efficient and ergonomic alternative. The Speedline RCV simply stops alongside a bin and then the driver/operator controls the bin lift remaining in the comfort and safety of the cab at all times. Our Speedline RCVs are built by two Terberg Environmental subsidiaries to give us one complete range: Terberg HS in Emstek, Germany, and Ros Roca in Tárrega, Spain. Although the principles of operation are the same for all Speedline models, we offer a diverse array of models and options to provide a perfect fit for their respective markets and local operating methods.

Speedline RCVs: refuse collection in low-density areas Martijn Bruggeman, Director of Terberg HS “We specialise in driver-only refuse collection vehicles, both Speedline side loaders and a range of front loaders for large industrial refuse bins that many of our sister subsidiaries also supply to their local markets. We build the bodies and bin lift system in-house. We also supply Olympus rear loaders manufactured by other Terberg Environmental subsidiaries. HS has a service team of 65 people, at three workshops, and 10 mobile workshops. In our home market, Speedline units are mostly used for collecting household waste in lower density areas with longer distances between houses. The driver/operator stops by the bin, selects the type of bin on the touch screen, positions the bin lift with the joystick and starts the automatic loading sequence. Once loaded the refuse is compacted by a pendulum system. We introduced Speedline in 1990s and are now the largest supplier of side loaders in Germany.
Speedline models We supply models for varying applications, with single and double chamber versions, mounted on a chassis selected by the customer. Our bin lifts have diamond or comb pick-ups. If the waste disposal site is a longer distance from the collection area then our swappable body CWS model is the perfect choice. Once the CWS body is fully loaded, it can be transferred from the RCV to a basic truck, for transport to the disposal site. >

Speedline SCOPE CWS for Bogota Martijn Bruggeman “In Bogotá, the capital of Columbia, the kerbs are often very high because the road acts as a drainage channel if there is heavy rain. So when the city wanted to move away from manual loading they could not use wheeled bins and position them behind a rear loader. However, side loaders are perfect for this application and the city invested in five Speedline SCOPE CWS units. The CWS was selected because it takes several hours to drive to the disposal site. So using trucks instead of RCVs for that trip reduces costs. The RCVs can stay in the city and keep collecting refuse. Our colleagues in Tárrega supplied the 1,300 containers of 2.2 cubic metres each which residents place their refuse in. This system has been in operation for a few years now and our client in Colombia is very satisified with how its working out.”
Introducing the eSpeedline Conventional Speedline bodies are connected to the mechanical power take-off (PTO) and electrical system of the chassis. One option when using a fully electric chassis together with a Speedline body could be to power the Speedline body using the vehicle batteries but our engineers determined that this approach would reduce the range and require relatively complex and costly integration. The new eSpeedline therefore has an integrated 40 kWh battery pack to power the bin lift and compaction system - completely independent of the chassis. The battery can be charged from a conventional threephase outlet, there is no need for a dedicated automotive charging point. The new eSpeedline bodies come
as standard with Terberg Connect telematics to make management and servicing more efficient. Because the integrated battery reduces the need for integration with the chassis, the eSpeedline can easily be mounted to any chassis: electric, diesel or CNG. The eSpeedline was introduced at the 2022 IFAT trade fair in Munich and we already have a strong contingent of launch customers eager to combine it with an electric chassis. The eSpeedline will enable our customers to reduce their carbon footprint, noise and particulate emissions. This will help improve the quality of our urban environments.

Speedline SLM: Fully automated collection for large containers Our Ros Roca manufacturing centre in Tárrega also builds side loaders, optimised for the local market. Product manager Javier Varela explains “Here in Spain, side loading is the main method used in large cities, such as Barcelona and Valencia. Residents put their materials in large road-side bins. These have trunnions at the sides and are traditionally picked up by a rear mounted bin lift with special arms.

Ros Roca introduced side loading in Spain more than 30 years ago and therefore has a great deal of experience in this system. Since the merger with Terberg, the development of what is now the Speedline SLM began. When developing the Speedline SLM side loader we worked closely with Terberg Machines, benefitting from their wide experience in bin lift design and manufacture. The SLM lift arms slide laterally to adjust to the size of bin. The bins have a capacity up to 3,300 litres so naturally the SLM has a large hopper and compaction chamber. This allows the driver/operator

to empty several bins before starting the compaction cycle. Our customers choose side loading because they feel it is safer in inner-cities than rear loading, provides a better efficiency and gives a cleaner city. In Spain, side loading collection started in larger cities, but even smaller ones such as Lleida, where I live, are now using the system. Ros Roca is already the largest supplier of rear loaders in Spain and now, with the Speedline SLM, we have the product we need to grow our side loader market share.”

Pre-sales support Of course, changing from conventional collection using a rear loader and a crew of three to side loading is a significant change. It is a strategic choice - not just another vehicle. The customer needs to invest time and effort in developing a strategic process. Our teams can advise them on the best options to introduce the new way of working. The refuse collection industry can sometimes be relatively conservative and resistant to change, often for good reasons. But projects in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona (Spain), Berlin, Munich (Germany), Bogota (Columbia) show that side loaders can bring many benefits. In fact, they have long been used in other countries, such as the United States.”
Future developments Our combined engineering deparments are continuing development of our Speedline range. Further improvements in camera systems, image recognition and AI will make the work of the driver/ operator even easier in the future. For example by introducing a driving assistance function to stop the vehicle in just the right place and by automatically monitoring the loading area. At present, the driver usually sits on the right of the cab, to get a good view of the loading area. Once the loading process is largely automated, the driver can sit on the left, and get a better view of the road. We are also working on an automatic bin recognition function, so there is no need to select the type of bin on the operator interface.

Our subsidiary Dennis Eagle Inc was established to serve the North American market and continues to grow its business with their ProView low entry chassis based refuse trucks proving increasingly popular with US operators and dealers. Dennis Eagle Inc has already received orders for over 30 trucks in Calgary, nine in Pittsburgh and seven in Denver. At the company’s headquarters in Summerville, South Carolina, plans are already in place to step up production as required throughout the year ahead to cope with the growing demand.

The RCV will operate in Manhattan itself with Century Waste Services who say they have invested in the vehicle to further improve safety in the city’s refuse collection operations. And they are quite clear that they hope to win more business on the back of that. Century Waste owner and founder Marc Savino said: “Historically, cab-over-engine trucks have been used in New York City because they provided better visibility for the driver, resulting in better safety. But the ProView has the engine behind the cab which enables it to have even larger, more panoramic windows all around the cab. “These provide a much better field of view which significantly improves visibility and advances safety even more. It also means there is far more room and comfort for drivers.
“We’ve test-driven the vehicle and we’re very happy with what we found.” John Baumann, from our dealers Allegiance Trucks of New Jersey, who sold the vehicle to Century Waste, was in no doubt about the future. He said: “The innovatively engineered ProView chassis is poised to become a market leader in waste removal and Allegiance Trucks is in a unique position to bring that innovation to waste removal companies stretching from North-Eastern New Jersey all the way up to Maine.” Nearer to home – home being Summerville, SC – Charleston has just purchased two ProViews to operate in the city’s vibrant Downtown area, just minutes down the road from where they were made. The two trucks were sold through the local dealership Truck Sales and Leasing and the customer cited the space and comfort they provided drivers and crews among the reasons for their purchase. And in case the vehicle’s appeal was still in any doubt, the ProView was even nominated for an award run by the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance, for being “The Coolest Thing Made In South Carolina”.

Divisions Royal Terberg Group Waste & Recycling Collection Equipment Terberg Environmental manufactures and supplies a wide range of innovative refuse collection (RCV) bodies, robust bin lifts, non-compaction recycling vehicle bodies, underground waste systems, side and front loading vehicles, weighing and identification hardware and a whole host of other waste and recycling collection equipment.
Yard & Terminal Tractors Terberg shunting tractors are used in over 120 countries. These vehicles are an efficient option for handling trailers and swap bodies. The range includes yard tractors, RoRo tractors, industrial tractors and road/rail tractors which are used in ports, distribution centres, heavy industry, railway shunting yards, tunnelling sites and airports.
Truck Modification Terberg Techniek fits additional axles to Volvo trucks and supplies axle kits worldwide. Our X-Track auxiliary front wheel drive system is fitted to forestry, construction and municipal vehicles. These modifications enable vehicles to carry heavier loads and operate on poor surfaces. Terberg Techniek also modifies vehicles for police, defence and industrial applications. The modifications include changing the wheelbase of trucks, fitting container handling systems and cranes, and fitting specialist equipment.
Truck Mounted Forklifts Kinglifter truck-mounted fork lift trucks help make delivery operations more efficient. They are available with a capacity of 1.5 or 2.5 tonnes, end or side-loading and with single or three-wheel drive. Their low weight means they can operate in settings where conventional fork lift trucks cannot be used.
