Challenge & success an eCollect goes into operation, the telematic data flows in and we learn more about the vehicle’s capabilities; how to best use and maintain an eRCV, what kind of operations it is most suitable for and how we need to adapt future models for other niches.

I

t’s often been said that without problems, we would not grow. Our industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years: safety issues, driver shortages, climate change, air quality and the pandemic among them.

Yet we continue to meet those challenges. Against this backdrop, our teams find a way to succeed. The ProView vehicle has been well received in North America and sales are very encouraging, as is the feedback from our dealers and first customers. In the UK, demand for the eCollect continues to grow and we are increasing production. Each time

Other product sales remain very strong and we continue to win conquest territory thanks to their quality and the support we provide. And our different Aftermarket services continue to grow and diversify as we find new ways to help customers in challenging times. Yet with so many developments in so many areas, we’ve maintained a clear view of the bigger picture and the directions we should take. For several years, our engineers have been addressing something they couldn’t re-engineer: human beings or more specifically, drivers and crews. They could, however, find ways to adapt our vehicles to make them safer, more comfortable and more efficient for the people using them. And that is what they have done. The result is the Elite+, our new RCV cab. It is an impressive

development and you can read about it and all those other developments in the pages ahead. The Elite+ also illustrates the principle that good engineering is all about serving people. Of course, to launch a product aimed at looking after drivers and crews at a time of severe driver shortages was as much coincidence as it was good planning on our part. But even without those problems, the Elite+ would have been the right product to launch now and we certainly met the challenge.

In the automotive industry, Dennis Eagle’s reputation for top quality engineering continues to grow and this latest example of their work will only add to that. As for the challenges that lie ahead; engineers only exist to meet challenges.

E

missions, safety and efficiency have each taken a major leap forward in our vehicles over the last 10 years but more recently, our design engineers have turned their attention to a new challenge: the Human Factor. We believe this is the next priority, developments that will help our customers most right now and for years to come. But humans are the one thing we can’t engineer. We have, however, done the next best thing which is to redesign and refine the human:machine interface. The result is more comfort, more safety and more efficiency. Ergonomics in action. The Elite+, as the name suggests, has been developed from the previous Elite cab which was independently tested and found to provide the best direct

vision of any truck on the UK’s roads. But the engineers have taken our market-leading vehicle and improved it once again, even managing to increase direct vision itself. Their focus has been very much on using ergonomics to develop the cab – the main working environment of drivers and crews. The result is a workstation for drivers and crews that addresses all their needs. The application of data-driven design, new materials and the consideration of modern working practices have all come together to take the Elite+ into a new era. Above all, it has been ergonomically refined to put the driver more in control than ever before. And we believe the Elite+ will provide significant benefits to operators that will be felt for years to come.

6 “We’ve made great strides in improving the efficiency of our vehicles and we’re still pursuing this goal,” said Sales and Marketing Director Richard Taylor. “But our latest development – the one that will provide the greatest benefits to our customers’ operations – is focused on the people who operate them. “We’ve produced an outstanding working environment for both drivers and crews. By making it safer, easier to use, more convenient and more comfortable, we are also helping to make them feel valued and positive about their important roles.

“And the benefits to employers will range across the full spectrum of their operations, from increased productivity to staff retention, improved safety and operational efficiency.” The Elite+ is now being introduced to both Standard and Narrow vehicles across Dennis Eagle’s entire range of new diesel RCVs in all sizes and configurations. Several Elite+ vehicles were supplied to customers before the official launch and the feedback from them has been loud and clear: drivers love them.

We took the safest cab on the road and made it better

EAGLE EYE

+ Direct Vision: we’ve raised the bar again The Direct Vision Standard, devised by Transport for London, rated the Elite vehicles (Standard and Narrow) higher than any other truck. And they were the only HGVs with slam doors to receive a five-star rating. But design innovations have enabled the Elite+ to provide drivers with even better direct vision.

+ Innovations at the heart of safety The introduction of individual seats for crew members allows the outer seat to be recessed slightly. And with the third crew member sitting further back, the driver has even greater near side view. This, combined with the larger rear windows on both sides of the cab, have further improved direct vision.

+ Why seeing is believing Enabling drivers to see as much of the road as possible helps reduce accidents and provides major benefits for operators. You can save time and money by reducing insurance claims, save vehicle downtime by needing fewer repairs, save the costs of paying for replacement parts. And you can save lives. Spring 2022

Key features of the Elite+

+ Superb access to low-entry cab It is easy and safe to get in and out of the Elite+. The driver and crew have just one anti-slip step to climb. Entry to the cab is still the lowest on the market, at just 495mm from ground-to-floor. But now the recessed outer seat makes access even easier.

+ L ow seating position helps eye contact The low position of the driving seat puts the driver closer to eye-level with other road users. This encourages direct eye contact which helps them understand what other pedestrians, cyclists and drivers are intending to do. This improved communication also directly improves safety.

+ E rgonomics: put drivers in control The controls not only have cleaner lines but also a very user-friendly touch and feel, thanks to the use of new materials with improved finishes. A similar approach to the organisation of the switch bank has led to a more natural and intuitive arrangement of the controls. Drivers love it!

+ Fine-tuned to suit the individual Both the seat and the steering column are more adjustable so drivers can position them to their precise, personal needs. The screen is mounted on a ball and socket joint so drivers can angle it as needed but this also makes room for a second screen if needed.

+ More comfort for the crew Our designers have also turned their attention to the comfort of the crew. The Elite+ has up to three separate body-moulded seats for the crew to provide individual space and more comfort.

+ A more relaxing place to be The ride quality has been improved by the development and introduction of better mountings. Improved cab insulation reduces noise reaching drivers and crews inside and there’s ambient lighting throughout. Together, they enable the Elite+ to provide a less stressful working environment.

+ Designed for 21st century convenience Modern working practices have also been catered for in the Elite+. The cab now has plenty of USB ports for electronic devices. There’s room for more storage in the header locker and the net above it. It’s also easier to reach, thanks to more space above the driver’s head and larger locker doors. And after listening to our customers, we’ve provided more cup holders!

+ Well-lit for safe operations The bright, LED corner beacons are squared off to ensure the Elite+ is easily seen. Along with the frontmounted strobes and running lights, they not only alert other road users to the vehicle’s presence but also provide excellent illumination to make the crew more visible and help them work safely around the RCV.

+ The ‘road-friendly’ RCV in your communities At a glance, the Elite+ will look reassuringly familiar and ‘road-friendly’ in your communities. This RCV is designed not to appear intimidating to other road users. Of course, the Elite+ has been put through crash safety tests to ensure it meets required standards.

EAGLE EYE

What the first customers have said “The drivers report the switches and controls are somehow easier to use. The new materials and the way they are finished make them very responsive to touch and control. And the new arrangement of the switches is very welcome." “The drivers say the Elite+ is more comfortable. The steering column and seat are very adjustable so you can get the right position for your individual shape and size. And that seems to be the starting point for the arrangement of all the controls and switches as well as the in-cab screen, which itself is very adjustable." “They also noticed and appreciated the increased direct vision through the larger rear side windows."

“Getting in and out is easier as the outside seat is slightly set back, giving you more room as you step into the cab. The crew appreciated this even more as they are the ones getting in and out most often." “The improved seat quality is appreciated and the heated driver’s seat was also a great bonus." “And then there’s the attention to detail that makes a real difference too. Drivers and crews work hard and often have a coffee or a bottle of water on the go, so having plenty of cup holders is vital. They also appreciated the points for charging their mobile phones. And the foot-level heater was also very welcome.”

ORUS:

the flexible solution for food waste P

lans to make separate food waste collections mandatory could boost recycling by 1.35 million tonnes a year – nearly 15% – by 2029. So, the arrival of the new ORUS, which has joined Terberg Matec UK’s family of specialist recycling vehicles, could hardly be more timely.

The ORUS is a nimble, leak-proof, highly efficient vehicle that is ideal for food waste collection. But Terberg Matec already has an excellent range of food waste collection vehicles, including the Plastic Bodied Utility Vehicle (PBUV). So why design another? The answer lies in the legislation. Making separate collections mandatory is expected to increase the amount we collect. Some operators will have to expand their fleets to meet Government plans. Others will have to start from scratch. But for some, dedicated food waste vehicles would simply be inefficient. So, the ORUS is designed for the highly efficient collection of both food waste and dry waste streams. And operators can quickly switch from one to the other. The body is made of steel to make it robust. Yet it has an impressive payload and is available in sizes from 7 to 14 cubic metres. And it can be mounted on a wide range of chassis, from 7.5t to 16t GVW.

The rear-mounted bin lift system can lift ENconforming two-wheeled or four-wheeled containers between 120 to 1280 litres in volume and up to 500kg. Bin lift controls are located on both the near-side and off-side of the vehicle for convenience and safety. It also has an innovative rear pannier system for quick and efficient hand-loading of food waste and the use of a subsidiary bin. Together, they allow fast loading from all containers, from the smallest food caddies to the largest four-wheeled bins. The ORUS is also compact and manoeuvrable so it can safely access the tightest of collection points. This is invaluable for food waste as bins are often located in back streets and alleys. But the key feature that gives it the ability to handle different waste streams with outstanding efficiency is the dual packing and compaction system. Food waste loaded at the rear of the body is packed by pulling it towards the cab to maximise the load. But for dry waste streams, the same system provides vital compaction with a very respectable ratio of 3:1. The smooth-sided body tips from a steep angle for efficient emptying, be it into a satellite container or at a food tipping point or dedicated bay.

The ORUS is available as a demo vehicle for customers to see for themselves and it will also be visiting shows around the UK throughout 2022. For booking and for further information on this or other Terberg products, please contact the Terberg sales team on: 01925 283 905 or email sales@terberg.co.uk.

“Food waste, of course, doesn’t need compacting but it is important for many other waste streams. By developing a packing mechanism that also provides compaction, we have created a vehicle with a very high degree of operational flexibility. “Consequently, it will be popular with the larger operators who run dedicated food waste vehicles and smaller operators who use their vehicles for multiple waste streams. “The ORUS fits a growing niche in our range of recycling vehicles. It is smaller and more agile than our aluminium Toploader bodies which are designed for heavier duties. “And while our multi-compartment Kerbloader can collect food waste, if you’re collecting just one waste stream at a time, the ORUS is more suitable.” And a thorough rinsing system makes it quick and easy for operators to switch between food and dry waste streams. Will Marzano, Managing Director of Terberg Matec UK, said: “We’ve been designing and manufacturing specialist recycling vehicles for many years and we go to great lengths to understand the changing needs of this industry by listening to our customers. The ORUS is the result of that vital process.

Further safety and convenience are provided by LED lights which both illuminate the working area and make the ORUS visible to other road users. A wide range of optional extras include CCTV and overload protection. While the vehicle is designed to be low-maintenance, it also comes with a 12-month OEM warranty for peace of mind. And this is backed up by Terberg Matec UK’s outstanding After Sales support services in both the field and the workshop.

The all-electric eCollect continues to make huge inroads into the RCV market with vehicles now operating in every corner of the UK.

J

ust over a year after the eCollect was launched, more than 50 eRCVs are in operation in the UK and successfully collecting on both urban and rural rounds.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Outstanding efficiency, quicker rounds and quiet operations are appreciated by local politicians, fleet managers, drivers and crews, residents and other road users. And that’s in addition to the main selling points of zero emissions and operational cost savings. In Wales, the Welsh Government provided grants to speed up the transition of local authority RCV fleets from diesel to ultra-low emission. The first was delivered to Newport City Council in February 2021 and two more went to Cardiff and Powys councils in March.

He said: “It has been our intention for a long time to have an electric fleet on our urban collections and now we’ve seen the vehicles in action we are very reassured. We’ve been running our first three eCollects for a few months now and are impressed with what we’ve seen. We have already ordered more.

“I am confident eCollects will figure prominently in our different fleets but it’s not just about the product. Support is crucial, especially when a new product is launched.

September 2021 and Adele Barnett-Ward, Lead Councillor for Neighbourhoods and the Community, told Meridian’s TV News that it was the first of many electric RCVs the council would be buying. She added: “We’re learning from this one – it’s going fantastically well so far. The aim is to get another six in and then replace the rest of the fleet in the next two years.” BCP Council, which had trialled an eCollect in 2020, now has four operating in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

While Newport and Cardiff’s work on largely urban rounds, Powys County Council has used its vehicle on both urban and rural locations across the county. The three councils have also loaned the vehicles to other Welsh local authorities and with Dennis Eagle demonstrating the eCollect at roadshows across Wales until the first week of May, sales are booming. So far, 23 vehicles have been ordered by seven of the 22 Welsh local authorities with more in the pipeline. Cardiff placed orders for five more within weeks of its first vehicle going into operation. And Newport became the second operator in the UK to order remanufactured eCollects. These have been converted from conventional RCVs it was already operating.

News round-up Business booming in Northern Ireland

R

ecord sales are being posted in Northern Ireland by Dennis Eagle dealer Manvik who report conquest territory and returning customers among their deals. Sales which were lost as the market slumped at the start of the pandemic, were quickly recovered when we emerged from the first lockdown. But they have remained at a record high ever since. In the nine months from July 2021, Manvik has sold 38 Dennis Eagle RCVs to operators in Northern Ireland and expects to sell up to 50 vehicles by the end of June.

Manvik Managing Director Alan Haire says cost and efficiency are the primary purchasing points for operators in Northern Ireland but the back-up service provided by Manvik is becoming increasingly important and has contributed to the sales boom. He said:

“Many of the operators here have their own garages but we cover what they can’t and that is seen as increasingly important. The truck’s reliability and vehicle uptime is increasingly stated as the reason they want Dennis Eagle RCVs.”

North-East Lincs reveals its secret landscapes

O

ne of the most beautiful corners of the UK is being showcased by 10 new RCVs delivered to North-East Lincolnshire Council.

The vehicle wraps are part of a campaign to remind local people of the borough’s beautiful beaches, parks and green spaces. And the messages remind everyone to look after it by taking litter home or binning it.

What’s as long as 3,000 football pitches and as heavy as 7,500 blue whales?

T

he answer is all the RCVs that we’ve ever produced in Warwick. Dennis Eagle reached a landmark last autumn: our 30,000th RCV rolled off the production line at Heathcote Lane. The order recorded on Keysheet 30000 was a 26-tonner for Peterborough City Council, one of 23 trucks delivered before Christmas. Of those, 16 were Elite 6x2 rear-steer chassis with a 5.9m wheelbase, OL16W body and Terberg pod bin lift; two were OL21W and four were OLTP22. The other one - which will be delivered later this year - was a craned vehicle for emptying underground containers. But they are a world apart from the first truck – a Phoenix 15 body on a Volvo FL7 4x2 chassis with a 4.1m wheelbase for a customer in Denmark. And Keysheet 00001 itself was hand-written. Of course, 30,000 is a lot of vehicles. Together, they: •

Weighed around 780,000 tonnes – the same as 10,000 space shuttles, 16 QE2s or the population of Portugal.

The vehicles were all 26-tonne, 6x2 Narrow RS with OL19N bodies and Terberg OMNIDel Electric lifts. They were delivered throughout November & December.

Could carry around 570,000m3 – that’s the total amount of space taken up by every person in Austria (with no gaps!).

A long-standing customer, North-East Lincolnshire continues to favour our Narrow vehicle which is highly efficient in any environment but comes into its own in the many narrow country lanes of the borough.

Have driven the equivalent of 54 trips to the sun and back.

And bumper-to-bumper, they would stretch for 300km – that’s as long as the M4.

Aftermarket round-up SWP and SUEZ test eCollect over different routes

D

ennis Eagle’s customer Somerset Waste Partnership and its partner SUEZ are using an all-electric eCollect to determine precisely how well electric vehicles can handle the different challenges presented by the diverse range of environments Somerset offers.

“They love it. It is a comfortable, highly efficient RCV and quieter too which creates a more relaxing environment.” Geoff Rigg Aftermarket Director

The plan involves trialling the award-winning eRCV on different rounds over variety of terrains, from the steep Mendip and Quantock hills to the flat Somerset Levels, with both old and modern urban streets and access roads that range from quick and easy to tight and restrictive. Aftermarket Director Geoff Rigg said: “The eCollect went through incredibly demanding tests and trials before we released it to the market, so we know what it can do. We also have feedback from customers and data from the DE-Connect telematic system too. “But with a new technology, it is important customers try it themselves. This extensive trial will enable them to see how electric vehicles cope with their very different rounds to give them an informed view of the future of their fleet.”

Feedback from drivers and crews on the first round in Bridgwater is that the vehicle is performing exceptionally well. “It has started on a domestic waste collection round in Bridgwater which has a bit of everything,” explained Dennis Eagle’s SWP Contract Manager Steve Mallard. “It is both town and rural and really quite demanding. But the driver says, ‘if this is the way forward, then all is well’. “They love it. It is a comfortable, highly efficient RCV and quieter too which creates a more relaxing environment. “And support for the vehicle is straightforward. We look after the eCollect on a full repair and maintenance contract, as we do with their diesel RCVs. “Each day it travels around 60-70 miles and returns to the depot with between 30% and 40% charge remaining. It charges overnight. The batteries are balanced. And it is ready to be checked, with all our vehicles, in the morning. Nothing could be simpler.”

A

n exceptionally high level of service and cost savings were the key to Dennis Eagle winning the repair and maintenance contact for East Staffordshire Borough Council.

The contract involves maintaining Reading’s entire DSO fleet of 79 vehicles at the existing premises while staff were TUPE transferred to Dennis Eagle

The deal is through contractor SFS but it capitalises on the proximity of our Aldridge Service Centre which is just 20 minutes away.

The council is in the process of electrifying its fleet and has an initial vehicle in service. Our expertise in the safe repair and maintenance of electric RCVs was a key factor in winning the contract.

This enables Dennis Eagle engineers to provide a full daily service ensuring the vehicles are ready and fully compliant before they leave the Service Centre in the morning. But any defects and repairs will be carried out at Aldridge by our experienced teams using our outstanding facilities. Aftermarket Director Geoff Rigg said: “This arrangement is a win-win for East Staffordshire. It ensures they will get an exceptionally high level of service which will be even more cost-effective at the same time. “A similar arrangement is being introduced in the summer with Stirling Council, where we have won a new R&M contract.

new five-year repair and maintenance contract has been won through open tender with Reading Borough Council.

Aftermarket Director Geoff Rigg said: “We designed and built the vehicles and our engineers know them better than anyone. This expertise and our reputation for first class service made us the obvious candidate to look after these vehicles. “Newport City Council has also turned to us for the repair and maintenance its eCollects which we are looking after nearby in our Merthyr Tydfil Service Centre. “And Exeter City Council’s eCollects will come to our Ivy Bridge Service Centre which is only 45 minutes away.”

“Again, we will have engineers on site at the council depot to ensure vehicles are fit to go out every morning. But any defects repair work needed after the day’s collection rounds will be carried out at our Cumbernauld Service Centre which is just 25 minutes away.”

ProView: gets firm foothold in North America

Great news from the States; the ProView is a big hit with operators and dealers.

D

ennis Eagle Inc has already received numerous orders including 32 in Calgary, nine in Pittsburgh and seven in Denver.

We’ve also landed our first order for two ProViews from Charleston, South Carolina – just down the road from our production facilities in Summerville. And here, production is being ramped up throughout the year to meet rapidly growing demand. Eager dealers are getting on board too, with a network of 14 dealerships giving us a presence in well over half of US states and some Canadian provinces.

First Proview delivery in North Carolina with dealer Piedmont Trucks to High Point City. Vehicle is a dual steer 6x4 mounted with New Way 31 yard side loader.

President of Dennis Eagle Inc Ian Handley said: “There are several key factors in the ProView’s success. It’s made in America and we provide the chassis, in line with the North American industry.

“It uses parts already familiar to operators and it is very efficient and super-safe at a time when safety is rising up the agenda.

“The innovatively engineered ProView chassis is poised to become a market leader in waste removal.” – John Baumann, Allegiance Trucks “Added to this, is the reassurance Dennis Eagle provides and the enlightened approach of our dealers, who say, it epitomises the future of the North American industry.” This month will see the first ProView starting work in New York City – Manhattan itself – with Century Waste Services.

They are quite clear that they have invested in the ProView to further improve safety in the city’s refuse collection operations. And they hope to win more business on the back of that. Century Waste owner and founder Marc Savino said: “Historically, cab-over-engine trucks have been used in New York City because they provided better visibility for the driver, resulting in better safety. But the ProView has the engine behind the cab which enables it to have even larger, more panoramic windows all around the cab. “These provide a much better field of view which significantly improves visibility and advances safety even more. It also means there is far more room and comfort for drivers. “It marks the next step forward in the design of sanitation and

recycling collection vehicles and this super-safe vehicle won’t just benefit us – Century Waste – but everyone using the streets where we operate.

Dana axles and Hendrickson suspension. We’ve test-driven the vehicle and we’re very happy with what we found.”

“I also love the easy in-and-out for the driver and helper. Because of the lower entry, there is less strain on our employees, reducing the likelihood of slips or falls. It enables the workers to walk straight out on to the curb. And crews will really appreciate the comfort and spaciousness of the cab and ease of getting to the back of the truck to do the loading. It shows their welfare is really important to us.

John Baumann, from our dealer, Allegiance Trucks of New Jersey, who sold the vehicle to Century Waste, was in no doubt about the future. He said: “The innovatively engineered ProView chassis is poised to become a market leader in waste removal and Allegiance Trucks is in a unique position to bring that innovation to waste removal companies stretching from North-Eastern New Jersey all the way up to Maine.”

“And while Dennis Eagle trucks may be a new name in North America, what sold it to me was that it uses the parts we are already using in other trucks – the Allison transmission, Cummins engine,

Turn Alarm

Keep cyclists safe when your RCV is turning left

+ Dennis Eagle’s simple but effective new turn alarm system gives cyclists a clear warning that your RCV is turning left.

The Turn Alarm automatically produces a loud and clear audible warning when the left indicator is turned on – but only if the RCV is travelling at less than 30mph.It avoids confusing road users with additional flashing lights – your truck already has indicators to clearly show the vehicle is manoeuvring. The alert is only activated when the RCV is going slow enough to make a turn rather than a simple lane change in free-flowing traffic. And the warning sound is only produced when it is turning left as right turns are proven to be not nearly such a danger to cyclists. The Turn Alarm system can be factory-fitted to all new Elite vehicles. Normal vehicle warranties cover the system. All spare parts are stocked and immediately available to order on our Electronic Parts Catalogue. We’re convinced the simple but effective Turn Alarm is the best system to keep cyclists safe when your RCVs are turning left.

The left-turn alert for cyclists: clear, simple, effective.
