Alexander Zverev, Simona Halep and Belinda Bencic are all former medalists

On the eve of the event, the 32 players took part in an interactive Junior School session hosted by Tennis Europe CEO Thomas Hammerl, which included topics ranging from safeguarding to media responsibilities and social media

The group was joined by a very special guest, former world #3 Ivan Ljubicic, who shared his experiences from his time as a junior, then a top professional player and more recently, as coach to Roger Federer Asked what advice he had for the elite young players in attendance, he said, “Enjoy this tournament . Don’t worry so much about winning One of you will be the best, but everybody that reached Monte-Carlo is amazing ”

NEW CHAMPIONS CROWNED

The girls’ 14 & Under final saw top seed Ksenia Efremova face unseeded Sona Depesova The pair had met once before in Junior Tour singles action, with Efremova winning their first match comfortably at TIM Essonne in February of this year . On this occasion she faced tougher resistance, but still managed to pull off a straight sets win, 6-4 6-4

Courtside after her emotional victory, Efremova said, “There were some stressful moments now and then, especially at 5-1 I had a match point, but I didn’t manage to finish Then she started coming back, 5-2, 5-3, I think she felt like she didn’t have anything to lose anymore . I recently had a very similar situation at another tournament, where I lost the set even if I was leading at first . So, this time, I said: okay, no, not again! I kept my focus, tried my best and finally won!”

Meanwhile, Diego Dedura-Palomero ensured that the boys’ 14 & under trophy remains in German hands for a second successive year after enjoying a stress-free 6-0 6-2 win over Ukraine’s Nikita Bilozertsev in the final The result came as a relief to the European Championship silver medalist: “It’s crazy, I wasn’t expecting such a quick win, I thought I was going to play three sets . It’s amazing to be here, same place as the Masters 1000, winning here is incredible,” he said

In the 16 & Under girls’ draw, Alena Kovackova defeated Diana-Ioana Simionescu (ROU) to secure her eighth Junior Tour title of a stellar season

The Czech qualified for the Junior Masters in pole position in both the 14 and 16 & Under age categories, losing just once in singles (in the Les Petits As semi-finals) and

New champions crowned at the 12 & Under Festival

The girls’ final was played between Keisija Berzina and Andreea Olariu (ROU) The two players were no strangers on the court, as they recently teamed up for a doubles tournament in France, but they had never played singles against each other . Olariu won a 14 & Under tournament held at the same venue the week before the festival, so she felt comfortable enough to breeze through this tournament Berzina, on the other hand, had a more difficult road to the final, playing three consecutive battles with a match tiebreak Even so, she had plenty of energy and was not intimidated by the taller Romanian Barzina wrapped up an intense first set, which lasted almost an hour, whereas the second one concluded the tournament in just 30 minutes This was the third tournament win for Berzina in 2022, a year in which she also started competing in 14 & Under events

DOUBLES

The boys’ doubles final saw Pavel Oliver Dufek & Matyas Marsik (CZE) vs . Lucas Alexandru Milos & Andrei Radu (ROU) Only a few points made the difference between the two teams, the Czechs ending triumphantly after a 7-5 4-6 10-2 match

Lea Haider-Maurer and Anna Pircher from Austria defeated Tea Kovacevic (BIH) and Sara Mitevska (MKD) in the doubles final The Austrian girls had a tough road through the tournament, just scraping through their opening match against Czechs Jana Kovackova and Katerina Zajickova 7-6(5) 1-6 11-9 However, by the time they reached the final they were in dominant form, securing the title in less than one hour, 6-1 6-2

Notes from Tennis Europe

The legend himself, Rafael Nadal sent a message of congratulations and encouragement to all the players, saying “I would like to congratulate all of you who qualified to play in this tournament at the Academy . I know that the whole team that makes this event possible has put a lot of effort in organizing it, so I hope you will take advantage of it I also hope you had a great time competing, not only for yourselves, but also for your countries That is something that I have always loved and enjoyed throughout my career, because to achieve success you have to work as a team, make sacrifices and not think only of yourself My wish is that you have enjoyed Mallorca, that you have enjoyed the facilities and that soon we will be able to see you playing here I wish you all the best for the future in Tennis Europe tournaments and in your careers”

Interview: Jordi Tamayo De Winne

and the Code of Ethics

Jordi Tamayo De Winne was elected to the Tennis Europe Board of Management in 2021 He was appointed as the Honorary Treasurer and in the time since has also been working on modernising the organisation’s constitution and writing a new Code of Ethics Continuing our series of interviews with the Board members, we spoke to him to find out more about the project…

Tell us a little about your professional background and why the Board nominated you to lead the process of reviewing the constitution and creating the new Code of Ethics?

My day-to-day job is as a lawyer, but Tennis is my great passion. That’s why I want to give something back to the sport, and if I can use my professional experience to help its administration, even better! At home I serve as the President of the Catalan Tennis Federation and First Vice-President of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, and since being elected to the Tennis Europe Board of Management I was made Honorary Treasurer and Chair of the Governance and Ethics Task Force, which is how I came to lead this project. It’s been a pleasure to oversee it, I am proud to be able to contribute to the modernisation of Tennis Europe as an institution and it is an honour to work alongside this Board of Management.

on Constitutional Change

Why is Tennis Europe updating its constitution?

For all sports organisations, the responsibility of maintaining a modern and functional constitution is an ongoing process. The world we live in is constantly changing and constitutions should reflect our evolving society. The new amendments that we are proposing go some way to ensuring the standards of good governance expected of a modern sports federation of the 21st century.

Can you outline some of the proposed changes?

One important example is that of gender equality. In recent years we have made progress with the representation of female Board members, but we still have some way to go to achieve parity. The new constitution will include a quota for a minimum number of men and women on the Board. Likewise, there is a clear need to ensure a fair representation of each type of member nation at Board level. Tennis Europe is an extremely diverse Regional Association, and it is important to have the needs and views reflected of different nations and we need for sure to hear from emerging nations and those with smaller populations. That’s why we propose to have fixed slots to ensure representation for all three types of member nation – A, B and C in our Board.

13 TENNIS EUROPE NEWS

Another important change is the proposal to extend the electoral term from three to four years, bringing Tennis Europe in line with the International Tennis Federation and the IOC. Four years also gives a President and Board more time to bring their policies to fruition and carry out meaningful change, but with a term limit of two mandates for the President and the Board members to ensure democratic regeneration.

What is a ‘Code of Ethics’, and why does the European Federation need one?

A code of ethics is basically a guideline for positive behaviour in a variety of situations, especially in a professional context. As you know, some professions, like doctors and lawyers, are legally required to adhere to a code of ethics, and many companies also ask their employees to follow one. I believe that sports federations like Tennis Europe should follow certain ethical guidelines. As we intend to introduce this for the first time, we have based it on the existing ITF Code of Ethics, which has been adapted to the needs of a Regional Association such as Tennis Europe.

Tell us about what’s been done so far for each project. The process has involved lots of consultation, as ultimately the changes to the constitution and establishment of the Code

of Ethics are being done for the member nations, so it was important to have their input.

We began by consulting with the ITF to benefit from their knowledge and experience, as the ITF has also been undertaking a similar process. I made a presentation at the 2022 Tennis Europe Annual General Meeting in Portugal, where we explained the project and some of the goals that we would like to achieve. More recently, at the Regional Meeting of Europe at the ITF AGM in Glasgow, I presented a summary of what has been done so far. Based on feedback received in Glasgow and subsequently, we are now working on the final version of the updated constitution, which will be submitted to the member nations for review before the upcoming Tennis Europe AGM in Barcelona.

The Code of Ethics has been reviewed with the Board of Management and the draft version was recently shared with member nations.

What are the next steps in the process? We are waiting for possible feedback from our members and after that we are almost at the finish line. The final versions will be sent to national tennis federations at the end of February. As a last step the nations will have the opportunity to vote for the modernised constitution in Barcelona next March.

Tennis Europe Junior School – Safeguarding & Advice for Parents

2022 was another busy year for the Junior School Presential classes were held at 13 Junior Tour events across the continent, where young players were informed about a wide range of topics Designed to signpost important information and support young athletes on the road to becoming professionals, the School is endorsed by the sport’s governing body, the ITF, and the ATP and WTA

Among the new video clips to be released this year are recent productions involving the topic of ‘Safeguarding’, and a special clip with advice for parents of young tennis players Tennis Europe CEO Thomas Hammerl spoke about the importance of safeguarding:

Tennis Europe has recently released a new video on the topic of ‘Safeguarding’, can you tell us a little bit more about it?

We run a Tour with more than 480 junior events and our main customers are players between 10 and 16 years of age, so for us it is especially important to ensure their safety. We are committed to safeguarding all children and adults throughout our Tennis Europe tournaments, events, projects, and programmes.

For someone that has no understanding about safeguarding, can you please explain what it means?

Safeguarding refers to the actions we take to ensure all children and adults are kept safe from harm when involved in Tennis Europe tournaments and events.

What forms of support does the European Federation provide?

Everyone should feel safe, respected, and valued in all tennis activities, whether they’re playing, visiting or working at an event. If you don’t feel safe or witness something that should be reported, then you can call a specific Tennis Europe telephone number and or send an e-mail to safeguarding@tenniseurope.org. Furthermore, the fact sheets of our junior events all include a number for local child protection services, and we also count on the support of the International Tennis Federation for certain cases.

So, this topic is also important for all parents and coaches, correct?

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and the welfare of every child and adult is of paramount importance. Though this clip was produced for young players attending our Junior School, we urge all adults to watch it and to learn about the procedures in place and their responsibilities when accompanying young players.

What is your plan to promote this topic?

We are blessed to have had huge success with our Junior School program in the past few years. Through this we deliver information on some of the most important subjects, like anti-doping, tennis integrity, mental health, and now also safeguarding, to the best juniors from all over the world. Members of our team are personally present at some of the biggest junior tournaments in Europe and we focus a lot on our social media channels to transport the videos and messages. We are very thankful for the fantastic cooperation with the ITF, the ATP, and the WTA who all sanction the program and make it the only educational program to be sanctioned by tennis’ governing body and the professional tours.

All Junior School clips are available to view online here free of charge, and in a number of major European languages
