Summer 2011 is now folding up under cool autumn skies. Collectively, we pack up and move our games to the covered hubs. One of Tennis BC’s strategic pillars has been to foster the development of more indoor facilities in this community. To that end, our facilities committee has been diligently working with community groups and municipal staff across the province on multiple projects. Two new indoor facilities have opened for the public this summer: the four-court Langley Tennis World, and UBC’s new eight-court expansion that includes international size playing dimensions. The Grant Connell Tennis Centre in North Vancouver, meanwhile, is in planning stages for an approved six-court expansion. Tennis Canada has stepped up their financial contributions to BC, with funding for city business plans and studies of public demand. At the same time, BC’s elite are claiming their leadership on the national and international scenes. BC now has six men and two women holding ATP/WTA world rankings. The Grand Slams now have the added excitement of our province’s best in the field. Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino is ranked #1 in Canada and reached a career-high of world #38 on the WTA Tour. Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil announced his presence after a semi-final appearance at the VanOpen, a close battle with Roger Federer at the Rogers Cup, a 2nd round at the US Open, and then single-handedly leading Canada back to World Group in Davis Cup, with three wins against Israel (and a ruckus crowd in Tel Aviv). Meanwhile, North Vancouver’s Filip Peliwo reached the junior top-35 world rankings, competed in all the junior Grand Slams, and is Canada’s #1 junior male. To cap it all off, BC swept the individual and team gold medals at the Western Canada Summer Games. Beginning this fall, Tennis Canada is helping to position the province as the new breeding ground for our national teams by funding the national junior training program that will run weekly with one of the world’s most proficient developers of young talent who has moved to BC. (Stay tuned to the next issue for details). And tennis is growing. Based on the Charleston Research Group’s findings, the country has seen an overall rise of 22.5% in participation, with BC ranking #1 in the category. The sport will continue to stay in the national spotlight as Rogers Sportsnet broadcasts ATP and WTA Tour events along with Davis and Fed Cup matches. Now, although the weather is changing, the future shines bright for tennis in BC. We have finalized a comprehensive plan to lead the sport from 2012 to 2015. Programs, events, and tournaments for all levels continue. Throughout the fall and winter seasons stay connected with the community through Tennisbc.org and via our Facebook and Twitter feeds. For this year’s Open, a record turnout of nearly 2,300 entrants gathered in the beautiful grounds of Stanley Park. “The Park” (as the tournament is affectionately called) is a must on any player’s competitive schedule as the hallowed grounds are considered Wimbledon for the recreational tennis star in BC. Earning a trophy in any division is truly an accomplishment of which to be proud. There is no other local event quite like it. This is a cross section of the whole tennis community. It provides a rare opportunity to watch finely cultivated club players pit themselves against crafty battle-tested public court players. Players step onto the courts sporting everything from the latest pro gear with pressed collars to near vintage rackets and rough gym attire. The event creates a buzz that provides a unique rush of adrenaline for every player (and fan) that walks onto the scene. The reputation as North America’s Largest Community Tennis Event is also due to the fact that the Park offers over 100 playing categories. This includes international world-ranking events for Juniors, Seniors, and Wheelchair players. There are entry level divisions for young children, and categories for adults of all playing abilities. The $20,000 men’s and women’s open competition consistently draws the province’s elite. The grandstand feature event courts got a face-lift courtesy of the Vancouver Parks and Recreation Board, and look great with the signature US Open blue and green. Although some mid-event rain scattered matches to indoor courts across the Lower Mainland, the event finished strong with a packed house on the final weekend. We are already looking forward to next year’s epic battles. This event would not be possible without the dedicated support of our staff and the many volunteers who are our “face of the tournament”.

It was a year of milestones for Western Canada’s major professional event. The Odlum Brown celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, and Tournament Chairman Floyd Hill announced the addition of $25,000 to the women’s prize money, pushing the grand total to a $200,000 purse. This provides an equal balance of prize money for the men and women. Hill also secured partnerships through 2013 with title partner Odlum Brown and presenting partner Invesco. With the goal of player development, The USTA and Tennis Canada continued to be primary financial supporters and resource providers. The hosting province BC additionally provided funding to assist in growth. These pillars have all helped to secure that professional tennis stays in British Columbia. Players from around the globe competed in the lead up to the US Open. The top seed for the men was Yen Hsun-Lu from Taipei, who has been ranked in the ATP world top 35 after a run to the 2010 Wimbledon quarter-finals. The women’s top seed was Monica Niculescu of Romania who has been ranked in the WTA world top 45 players and advanced to the 2011 US Open round of 16. Included in the men’s field was former US Open semi-finalist and world top 15, Robbie Ginepri of the United States. On the women’s side, previous VanOpen champions returned, including Anne Keothavong of Great Britian (2007 Champion), Urszula Radwanska of Poland (2008 Champion), and Stephanie DuBois of Canada (2009 Champion).

Team Canada fights a hostile audience to advance in the Davis Cup – and bring the tournament home to Canada! For the first time since 2005, Canada returns to the top tier of world competition. With July’s dramatic win, under the harsh conditions on the red clay in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Canada defeated Ecuador to gain the opportunity for a World Group play-off versus Israel. Finishing off the summer’s competition in Tel Aviv under a hostile crowd didn’t seem to faze Team Canada or Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil. The journey toward the World Group began with Vasek taking out three-time VanOpen champ, Dudi Sela, who has proven nearly unbeatable at home: Canada’s current top gun and world top 25, Milos Raonic, fell victim to food poisoning early in the week and was not able to compete at his best. Vasek combined to win the doubles match with veteran Daniel Nestor over the Grand Slam veteran team of Erlich and Ram. This squarely put Canada’s World Group fortunes on top of his shoulders. With no signs of being new to the experience, he
secured Canada’s place in the World Group with a straight sets win over Amir Weintraub. Vasek’s homecoming included red-carpet treatment, with a VIP reception at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club and appearances on Global TV, CTV, and the Breakfast TV show on City TV. Canada is currently ranked as the #14 team in the world, ahead of Hewitt’s Australian squad, Murray’s contingent from Great Britain, and Federer’s home team of Switzerland. Next up is the world #4 team of France that contains the electrifying athletic combo of Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Gael Monfils. Canada will bring the colossal serves and high octane games of Raonic and Pospisil, along with Daniel Nestor, one of the world’s best doubles players in the past two decades. France would be unwise to overlook the home team this coming February 10th-12th.

The 1st Annual Miele Provincial Team Tennis Championships have come to a close. Richmond’s Carl Ho competed in the men’s singles draw and Bethany Clark of Port Moody served as national team manager. The event is regarded as one of the world’s largest international sporting competitions with over 170 countries represented. Carl fought through a global field to place in the top 12. He grew up playing at the Delta Town and Country facility with his coach Kris Santoso. He is currently in his 4th year with the University of New Mexico Lobos on a tennis scholarship.

The second tip is fostering better body awareness. By the age of 30+, most tennis players have experienced some injuries and have a busy life outside of tennis. The combination of past injuries, life, and tennis will create muscle imbalances that will unknowingly effect how an athlete moves on the court and how they sit, stand, walk and breathe all day. Having someone show you all your restrictions can be a humbling experience, but it is the best way start a prevention-based exercise program.

KEYS TO ADDRESSING PAIN, PREVENTION, & PERFORMANCE AS A TENNIS PLAYER
As a physiotherapist, I have treated many of the top senior tennis players in Canada and have identified a few keys to fixing their nagging injuries and keeping them on the court. First, the use of IMS acupuncture to correct the nerve irritations responsible for things such as chronic tennis elbow, low back pain and calf strains. Some pains, stiff nesses, and weaknesses cannot be fixed by attempting to do more stretching and strengthening exercises (in fact, that can just make them worse). IMS can fix the root cause of the problem and get an athlete back on the court much faster.
Once you discover that improving how you stand and sit can make you more flexible than stretching every day, you can start focusing on the intricacies of movement that can turn a good tennis player into a great one. Exercises that focus on proper leg loading are key for court mobility, while exercises that focus on lat and chest length are important for serving and powerful ground strokes. The best way to improve your game is to think of your body as a piece of equipment that requires maintenance and attention. If you can build a better foundation of movement, the tennis skills you have developed will be that much easier to perform. Do I want a lively spring or something board-like? Do I want a lower tension to give me more power? Or do I want a higher tension for more control? The pros give you their answers here.

A SMASHING VIEW Beach tennis came back to Kits Beach with a passion this year–and brought international competitors from Ireland, Spain, and Cuba! The sun lit up the beach, warm and bright. You couldn’t find a better back-drop for the event, which ran side by side with the basketball, beach hockey, and beach volleyball all around. An extremely fierce round robin tournament – with outstanding dives, lunges, and smashes – entertained all in this ideal coastal setting. The championship bracket on Sunday was strong and started with the semi-finals pitting two NCAA Div.1 University of Portland tennis players (Guay & Gill) vs. the defending champs Santoso & Salvo. The other semi-final matched the athletic Cuban team of Lopez & Lopez against Irish favorites, Barry & Boland. The final results finished with the defending champs of Santoso & Salvo retaining their Kings of Beach Tennis title over Ireland’s duo of Barry & Boland. 3rd place went to Guay & Gill over Lopez & Lopez. Thank you to all competitors. It was a tremendous weekend of stellar play in the sun!
