2009 season in review

Despite not having the level of success the team saw in 2008, the 2009 Golden Eagles still made their third straight appearance in the OVC tournament under head coach John Blair. Along with making the OVC tournament, the players at Tennessee Tech received a total of six OVC awards throughout the season including four Player of the week awards, and three all-OVC honors. Leah Meffert continues to pad her already impressive resume as she was named to the allOVC first team for the second straight season. Meffert led the Golden Eagles in kills with 406 (3.62 kps), which was Team Heart good enough for second in Melanie Culp the OVC. Leah also led the Best Offensive Player team in service aces with 28 Leah Meffert and tallied at least 10 kills in 25-of-28 matches last season. Best Defensive Player Meffert received the Golden Katie Kenline Eagle Best Offensive Player award.

Academic Award Teresa Craig

Coming off her 2008 season that saw her named the OVC Coach’s Award Defensive Player of the Year, Marie Peddicord senior Katie Kenline received two of the Golden Eagles Newcomer Award three OVC Player of the Week Kelsey Gray awards as she earned two Defensive Player of the Week awards on the way to earning an all-OVC second team award. Kenline led Tennessee Tech in digs with 547 (4.88 dps) which ranked fourth in the OVC. Kenline received Tennessee Tech’s Best Defensive Player award as well. Junior Melanie Culp took over as the Golden Eagles primary setter as she tallied 1,107 assists (9.88 aps) which ranked fourth in the OVC. Culp earned her first career Setter of the Week award. Culp recorded at least 50 assists in four matches in 2009 including a 62-assist performance against Southeast Missouri. Culp also recorded 11 double-doubles in assists and digs in 2009 including a 49 assist, 15 dig performance against North Florida. Culp also received the Golden Eagles Team Heart award.

Kelsey Gray joined the Golden Eagles squad in 2009 and made an immediate impact on the defensive side of the net as she led the Golden Eagles in total blocks with 122 (1.09 bps) which ranked fourth in the OVC. Gray also contributed on the offensive side as she led all newcomers with 198 kills including a career-high 15 against Southeast Missouri. With these statistics, Gray became the second Golden Eagle to be named to the OVC all-Newcomer Team and earned Tech Newcomer award.
