prEFaCE All my life, I have been a dreamer. My journey to realize my dreams may not matter to some, but I always believed those dreams would one day become reality. It does matter, however, that I made that journey; for otherwise, I would not be living my dreams today. My first step in achieving my dreams involved a major change of perspective. I lacked self-confidence. I had in my head that I was emotionally and mentally traumatized by the things I missed out on as a child. Discouragement was my constant companion. In reality, I didn’t miss out on anything. I grew-up in a great family, without verbal or physical abuse, we were not rich, but not too poor either, and I was good at everything! That was just

311829 Tendril-txt-Win

11-04-22 16:33:53

osition 12

my inner conversation, my inner perspective at life at the time. I felt something was missing. I did not yet realize that the power to fulfill my dreams resided within me. It was just waiting for me to open the door and let my dreams soar. My own soul became my inspiration. Searching deeply within myself, I learned to transform my dreams into reality. Dreams are an integral part of us. They reflect our faith in life, fuel our daily accomplishments, and energize us. This energy renews itself and flows all around us. Our dreams make us different, unique. They express the love we have inside us and are the passion of what we hope to do. My motto is “IN-POWER yourself.” We humans have the ability to go inside our hearts and discover our own power. In doing this, we learn who we are, what turns us on, what makes our hearts beat faster. And when this happens, we must listen. This is the spark, the fire that tells us how far and how fast we must travel on our journey. The journey, in turn, gives us the confidence we need to reach our goals. Of course, along the way, we will have questions. When we find our passion in life, will it bring us

osition 13

love? How far do we want to go? Is the moon far enough, or do we want to keep on going forever? Is our passion the most important part of our spirit and soul? Remember that having found our passion does not mean the road of life will not be chaotic at times. Life is not always easy. It hasn’t been for me and I presume, for you either. More than once during my early years, I contemplated suicide. But somewhere deep inside my being, I realized that life had value. So instead of ending my life, I chose to live it in a way that celebrated its worth. And I decided to tell my story so that it might inspire others whose hardships are weighing them down. I want to offer hope, confidence, power, and freedom to those who long to believe in themselves and who want to make the right decisions at the right moments. Sharing my vision and knowledge with others who are on the verge of giving up has become yet another passion. My message to them is strong, clear and relevant, even in their saddest, most discouraging times: “Keep Dreaming, Keep Living.” And don’t be distressed by the crashes. The crashes we experience in our lives serve as lessons from

which we learn and grow. These collisions teach us confidence and IN-POWER us with visualizations to help us realize our dreams. Finally, we need to ask ourselves the following question:

What Are Our Sources of Salvation? • • • •

Our inner child Our freedom The source of our life The light of our soul, which is portrayed through our body • Our own faith • The power in ourselves to give • The King’s child I continually incorporate into my life my INPOWER. I live at 180 mph on the track and in my daily life. How many mph do you need to go to make your dreams come true? Are you ready to keep dreaming, to keep living? Are you ready for the ride of your life? Then come along with me on the journey that kept—and continues to keep—my dream alive.

my darkest years, especially Michele and Pierre Farah-Lajoie, Denise Rioux, France Gosselin, Chantal Cormier, Mike Farbotko, Josee Chevalier, and many others who just listened to me without any judgements. Annie Marquier at the Institute for Personal Growth (www.idp.qc.ca) showed me the way to discover my “inner-self” to find the joy, the peace, the energy, and the light inside my heart and my soul to grow personally and spiritually, to be able to achieve a better life, as well as inspiring more and more people each day around the world. On the business side, I want to recognize and be grateful to Patrick Masse, who trusted me and gave me a chance to be his mentor over 15 years ago. Now he is running one of my businesses with huge success. Without him, my success and my life would not be the same. Carèle Belanger is also supporting me in my new endeavors in many ways. introDuCtion Dear Readers, It is with great passion and inďŹ nite love that I welcome you. I am pleased and grateful to share with you a part of my story. With this book, I hope to inspire you to continue learning about life and to urge you to persist in following your dreams. My life, like my motorcycle racing, travels at 180 miles per hour. I gain great pleasure in its risks, and I learn from my successes, as well as from my mistakes. Motorcycle racing charges my body with adrenaline, but my feelings do not come from the motorcycle. Rather, they emanate from the journey of my life. When I look into a mirror, the only

311829 Tendril-txt-Win

osition 20

face I see is my own. I am responsible for the roads I travel. The motorcycle represents the course of my life—and, possibly, the course of yours. This analogy allows us to fully open the throttle and make the race track our own. In turn, this leads to greater focus on our goals. It also provides the adrenaline needed to pursue and reach those goals. Life is a race. Each lap represents daily challenges. Sometimes, these challenges take the form of accidents along the way that bring us powerful lessons to help us grow in self-conďŹ dence, love, and above all, passion in everything we strive to achieve on our journey. Our dreams become the goals and objectives we seek throughout our existence. We may not accomplish all of them; in fact, we likely won’t. But some that do not materialize may be bad choices, or their elusiveness may derive from some fault other than our own. We must not allow the reason for failure to matter. We must continue to build our own legend, achieve our own summit, and stay the course to win our trophy. It may help to consider ourselves as artists without inspiration, staring at a blank canvas or one on

which the painting is obscure. Everything is uninspired, out of context. Stepping away to recharge our ideas allows us to see things in a different light. With new insight, we can paint a masterpiece, give our greatest performance, experience a fuller life. We are all artists. However, we paint or perform in different mediums. Our roads take us in diverse directions. The path may not be easy; but despite the pitfalls, doubts, lack of supporters, and/or negative media that perplex us, we continue on the journey we have chosen. This is the portion of my story I want to share with you— my dreams, my doubts, my fears. Many days and nights, my lack of self-confidence disturbed me. But even when I was not at my best, I learned on the race track of my life. When I was a child, I spent hours sitting at the piano and touching the keys, mesmerized by the sounds. The music guided me to a place in my mind where I floated in my childish dreams. It is my sincere hope that by sharing my experiences, you can gain understanding of yourself as I have. All my life, I shared my love for music everywhere I went. I’ve found this to be a source of relaxation, whether I was playing the piano or guitar, or singing

a song. Lyrics are important to me because the meaning of the words signifies a life experience, whether good or bad. Songs have often helped me to overcome obstacles in my road. What do we do when negative thoughts overwhelm our minds? Take, for example, feelings of low self-esteem or suicide. How can we combat degrading opinions of ourselves and maintain faith and perseverance on our journey toward our goals? First and foremost, we must not try to go it alone. We must look to people who love us and who will not judge us. This help can come from a relative, a friend, or even a casual acquaintance who is willing to listen and perhaps even advise us. I experienced this kind of help one night when I could no longer cope with my life. I called my mother. (This experience is related in Chapter 4.) My message here is simple: we may live in darkness, caught in a vice. To escape, we must broaden our vision, allow ourselves to be enlightened, and trust the person in whom we are confiding. By doing this it allowed me to have confidence in others, and they helped me to cope with my problems. Perhaps even more important, they enabled me to build confidence

in myself. As you read through my story, you will realize that during my journey, I began to believe in me. Travelling at 180 mph on the racetrack, as well as in real life, I had to give myself time to live. Becoming involved in sports helped me to relax and gave me the determination to face challenges. Volleyball offers a prime example. Because of my small stature, others thought I could never be successful in this sport. But on the contrary, I enjoyed many victories during the time I played. I ranked ninth in the Canadian Championships, exceeding even my own expectations. My triumph at volleyball gave me the impetus to be a better performer in my studies, my companies, and any other projects in which I am involved. Had I not discovered this passion, this spark inside of me, I might never have reached any of my goals and quite possibly would not be alive today to write of my experiences. Discovering the passions that lie within us and being motivated with self-conďŹ dence to feed them is an absolute necessity if we are to rise to victory. This book focuses on one of my passionate dreams, motorcycle racing. Its intent is to inspire you and help you see that anything is possible. You can reach your destination once you recognize

that you possess the necessary tools—and if you are willing to make the required sacrifices. I gave myself the power to achieve what I wanted most. I had to let go of material possessions, overcome my fears, and take the road that led to my dreams. I lived it and I loved it. I laughed and cried; and through it all, I sang with all my heart. Our grandest dreams are realized only through great determination. Inside each of us, a warrior waits to be awakened, waits to help us in the fight to attain our goals. We need that helper, and we need to visualize where we want to go. Then we are prepared to engage that warrior alongside us as our comrade-in-arms in our battle to achieve our dreams. Often, we must sacrifice choices we made before becoming committed to our dreams. This may mean changing our life style, giving up the party scene, forsaking materialism, and perhaps even moving away from family or loved ones—especially if they discourage us. These necessary changes reduce the detours and dead-ends on our journey to our new destination. Making choices is a very powerful tool, and wise decisions make us the master of our own destiny.

rECoGniZE Your DrEaMS anD GoalS

Realizing Your Dreams My mission is to inspire you to pursue your biggest dreams and incite you to live your life on the fast track—at 180 miles per hour. I will invite you into my life and take you with me onto the race track. You will sit right behind me on my motorcycle, and I’ll share with you my adventures as I fulfill my dreams. This will bring you closer to the discovery of your own goals and help you focus on the finish line of your dreams. You will discover how to tap into the reservoir of power that resides within every one of us. My life experiences have inspired young and old alike to shift themselves into gear, get into action,

and move out of their comfort zones. The rich stories within these pages are intended to help you, inspire you, hopefully even push you toward the realization of your dreams. To begin, I would like to share some strategies and lessons that have helped me—ones I’ve integrated into my life, my travel experiences, my motorcycle racing. When I compare the route of life to the course of a race track, you will see the similarities. I will often use the acronym of “RACING” to help guide you to race to your dreams. It’s easy to remember, and it works.

Recognize your finish line. Act one corner at a time. Care about yourself, your family, our planet— your competition

IN-POWER yourself to win. Never give up. Get the checkered flag!

A University Degree Have you ever been disappointed because, after expending great effort, energy, and sacrifice in pursuit of a relationship, studies, or work, you felt that you had failed? Have you become despondent because you are unable to reach the dream you had set for yourself? Don’t despair! You are not alone! To look at where I am now, you might find it difficult to believe that I have suffered through the same disappointments and feelings many times in my life. The good news is that each time this happens, I learned and grew. The same will happen to you. You will reach a new level with each challenge. How? By using your tools to IN-POWER yourself. One of the biggest challenges I faced came in the form of my Baccalaureate in Actuaries. Risk management in the field of finance—actuaries—uses a lot of mathematics, statistics, and economics. I studied very hard and burned so much energy (for nothing, I think!) because it is one of the most difficult baccalaureates to obtain. I love mathematics, and I enjoy playing with numbers; but pursuing this degree put a serious strain on me. I thought this baccalaureate would help me to achieve one

of my dreams—to move to California (or maybe Australia), where I could see the sunset every night on the Pacific Ocean. I wanted to hear the sound of waves crashing on a beach where I could play volleyball. I also fantasized about having an annual salary of $180,000.00 and offering conferences around the country to help people plan ahead for their retirement. Those dreams didn’t come true, and I grew depressed. For many years I wondered why on earth, with all my efforts, my dreams did not become reality. But the timing just wasn’t right. In December of 1992, I obtained my bachelor’s degree. At least I could get a good job in the Actuaries domain, I thought. But mega companies were no longer hiring. Big corporations laid off massive numbers of workers, especially high-paid ones. The 1990-1991 recession struck hard and changed the whole work force. Job placements plummeted from one hundred percent to twenty-five percent, and my dream flew out the window. I did find some work in my field in the summer of 1992. After that, I told myself, a permanent job would no doubt be forthcoming. It didn’t happen.

12

311829 Tendril-txt-Win

11-04-22 16:33:53

osition 31

In fact, the department closed, and there was no way to get permanent work in my field because people were losing their jobs. I finally accepted a secretarial position in Montreal, exactly where I did not want to work. What a huge letdown after all the efforts I’d made! I wanted to escape from my life, from my circle of friends. I wondered whether I even had friends anymore because I’d developed such a negative attitude. I wanted a new start—to travel, to run away from the snow and cold winters in Quebec. I wanted my life to drastically change. I started balancing images and thoughts in my head, thinking that maybe my whole attitude toward life was the result of my negativity. I decided that one of the changes I needed was to work on becoming more positive. Perhaps that would lead to wiser choices and better outcomes. I tried changing, but nothing happened. My mission seemed to be dormant… waiting for something. Now I know that I had to learn a vital lesson on my life’s path. But I did not see it then. I was blinded by my wrong decision, and I had contracted a serious case of “tunnel vision.” Apply this to yourself, and think of it like this. You are standing in a forest, but you don’t see

Recognize Your Dreams and Goals

311829 Tendril-txt-Win

13

osition 32

clearly because you’re too close to a tree and there seems to be no way around it. You are stuck. Nothing appears on your horizon, and you are trapped by your “tunnel vision.” How do you get past it? Step back. Refocus your vision. Look beyond the trees. Only in this way can you get a vision of what lies on your horizon. In racing we often face the same problem when we are stuck behind a competitor. We must slow down a bit, look further ahead, and come back with a new angle to make the pass.

Understand Your Patterns. How does this help your vision? It’s quite simple really if you divide your life into phases. In each phase, you have four sections. Before you begin, relax your body and your mind. Meditate while you listen to your favorite calming music. Find a little peace inside your heart, a place where you are in balance with yourself. And be sure to shut down your “little hamster”—that chatty voice inside that always contradicts you.

14

osition 33

What Happened? First, to understand the present, you often need to address the past. How did things get so out of focus? Close your eyes and let your mind drift backward. Did something occur when you were a child or an adolescent? How about sometime last week? What is your heart telling you? Listen to your intuition, play the game, and resist the urge to argue with your inner self. Describe the situations in each phase of your life that frustrated you. Concentrate on the facts and the objective reality of this distressful situation. Focus only on those elements, not on emotional ones. Divide each page into quadrants, and label them as I have below. Then begin with what actually happened.

What Happened?

How Did You Feel?

What Did You Do?

What is Better Now

Recognize Your Dreams and Goals

311829 Tendril-txt-Win

15

11-04-22 16:33:53

osition 34

How Did You Feel? Now is the time to concentrate on emotions. Describe the pain. Write down whatever you feel in the best way you can. Delve deeper and deeper into your thoughts, your reflections, your heart. Crying is okay. Being angry is okay, too. Don’t limit yourself, and don’t be afraid to accept yourself as you are. Put your failures in the past, and forgive yourself. Then forgive those who have hurt you. Take a deep, calming breath. Be conscious of your breathing as you allow yourself a few quiet minutes. What Did You Do? After reliving your emotions, remember the actions you took to solve the problems and address the failures. Note what you did in the physical sense. It can be something as simple as cutting your hair, changing your look, or adding something new to your wardrobe. Or it can be quite drastic, like quitting your job or getting divorced. What Is Better Now? Review the opportunities that opened up to you after you took action, after you changed your mindset, after you stopped complaining about the

16

osition 35

situation. Describe the good things in detail. Include the great people you met, the souvenirs and memories, the smiles that came your way after you cast a smile at someone else. Count the blessings you received and the lessons you learned. Are you a better person? How have you grown since then? Taking everything into consideration, you must admit that it was a good turn, a big step forward in your life, wasn’t it? Repeat these four steps for every phase in your life until you reach the last phase, the one where you are right now. This exercise will help you discover what you need to do next! Listen to your heart, and write down what pops into your mind. You will find at least two or three different scenarios that would challenge you, but they will bring you to a more positive view of the future.

My Personal Example Because I did not get a job in the field of Actuaries in 1992, I spun my wheels until 1995 before deciding to take action and change my life. My new career, although somewhat related to my original one, moved in a different direction. I built my own

business in financial planning, but I started as an insurance agent. Believe me, I never imagined myself as an insurance agent, but there I was. The new challenges, the schedule flexibility, not having a boss, feeling the freedom of being self-employed, and the emptiness and unhappiness I was feeling at that point in my life pushed me to make that decisive move. Contrary to my expectation, my career change fit me very well. In fact, it far exceeded anything I had dared to hope for. Because of my personality and my love of meeting new people, I found great satisfaction in my new career that ultimately led to financial planning. It took a few years to build a reputation, but my profession gave me the freedom I was looking for and the joy of helping people focus on their financial and personal goals. I now feel certain that I wouldn’t have ever been as satisfied with any job I might have held in the Actuary field. Becoming a financial planner and building my own enterprise brought me great success. I planned my work schedule to suit my needs, initially working thirty-two hours a week—and took four weeks of vacation a year. That schedule met

the goal I had set for myself, and I kept it. After only three years, I hired a part-time employee to prepare for my pre-retirement. I was twenty-eight years old. Everyone laughed at me for thinking of retiring at such an age. Guess who’s laughing now. I semi-retired at the age of thirty-six. I was young enough to start a new journey, one that took me down a different road. My new endeavor is expanding faster and faster, grabbing more of the market everyday. I now have an active partner, someone I once mentored. He has become a cherished associate, and together we’ve created a successful company. This is the beauty of helping people to grow with you—finding prosperity by being cooperative instead of competitive. How does this relate to you and your success? Adapt what I did to your situation. Think about the causes for frustration in your life. Then try to discern what makes you happy. Once you’ve taken that step, you have a new perspective. Now consider what conclusion or lesson can you draw from your past experiences and your present situation to help you change your life for the better.
