DOM JOLY

Comedian Dom Joly shot to fame with his anarchic hidden-camera show ‘Trigger Happy TV’ and has since made television series for the BBC, Channel 5 and Sky 1 including This Is Dom Joly and Dom Joly’s Happy Hour. His spoof autobiography, Look At Me, Look At Me was published in 2004. In 2009 he wrote his first travel book, The Dark Tourist, in which he holidayed in some of the world’s most unlikely destinations such as Chernobyl and North Korea. His new book - Here Comes the Clown: A Stumble Through Show Business is a brilliantly bizarre and hilarious memoir from this audacious star.

8

www.rochdalestyle.com

Did a practical joke ever go wrong? SO many times. I once had control of a tannoy in a supermarket and we were picking on customers by sending me as the security guard to keep an eye on them. A nun came in and we couldn’t resist. She went mental, swearing, throwing stuff - still not sure if she was a real nun or a strippergram. Which programmes make you laugh? Fawlty Towers, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, Veep. What can we expect from your new book ‘Here Comes the Clown: A Stumble Through Show Business’? You can expect a warts and all description of my last 15 years and every embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me. "It’s very funny” - my mum says. We’re really excited about the Trigger Happy TV revival… Has filming begun for this? Can’t really talk about this… but yes… Will the giant phone be making a comeback?! The only thing coming back is the phone because phones have changed so much and there are a lot of new options...

Dom will be heading to Number One Riverside for the Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival on Saturday 24th October, where he’ll be talking about his life and his new book. Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival runs from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October, with a feast of events for all ages covering drama, comedy, literature, music, theatre, poetry, visual arts and children’s shows. For the full line-up and to book tickets visit rochdaleliteraturefestival.co.uk. Festival updates on Twitter connect with @RochdaleLitFest. Style caught up with Dom ahead of his visit to Rochdale, to discuss pranks, giant phones and hot air balloons…

Readers will probably know you best from Trigger Happy TV; when did you first think up the show? It kind of happened organically - I was mucking about filming little bits and pieces and then Channel 4 spotted us and we got to make a one-off and then everything snowballed from there. There was certainly no great masterplan - most of TV is luck and acting on it. Did you expect the massive popularity the show achieved? Not in the slightest - I was just excited that it was going to be on telly and then suddenly it was Friday night between Friends and Frasier! What was your all-time favourite prank from the series? Probably the snail - I got dressed up as a huge snail and waited for traffic to stop at a zebra crossing before sliding very, very slowly across the road. Only in England would the traffic have stopped. In America I’d have been savagely beaten by rednecks before being run over by an oversized pick-up truck.

We’re guessing you may have to be more heavily disguised this time around? Do you get recognised a lot? It’s not too bad - I have great make-up artists so it’s not really a problem. What other plans do you have at the moment? I’m starting my new book, in which I walk from London to Beirut. We hear you have a hot air balloon?! I do… what could possibly go wrong. I haven’t got my licence yet but watch out once I do - it’s opened up a whole new area for pranks. What advice would you give to aspiring comedians and writers? Stick to your guns, if you find it funny, then it is. Don’t crowd-please and keep away from low-hanging fruit. You’ve won an award for being the ‘funniest tweeter’… where can we tweet you? @domjoly but I do bite...

STYLE EXCLUSIVE

HELEN LEDERER Helen Lederer is a very familiar face in the field of comedy, writing and acting... and also the person Dawn French calls ‘the funniest woman in England’. Helen is probably best known for her role as dippy Catriona in Absolutely Fabulous. She started out as part of a group of early 1980’s comedians: Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, the late Rik Mayall and Ben Elton who made their names at London’s Comedy Store. 14

www.rochdalestyle.com

Helen will soon be heading to Rochdale for this year’s Literature and Ideas Festival, to discuss her debut novel, Losing It - shortlisted for the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic fiction. She will be discussing this latest piece of work in her own entertaining style at the festival on Friday 23 October, 7.30pm at Number One Riverside.

Steve Cooke and Norman Warwick, from All Across the Arts caught up with Helen prior to her festival appearance…

Which Helen Lederer will people see at the Festival? I have made it up as I have gone along. If it is of some interest to some people, and I guess it is, then that’s a bonus. I have never been one to completely fit in. I used to get into trouble at school. It is not that I meant to be badly behaved – I just did things a bit differently.

When you put your work out there what do you hope that it will achieve? We need role models, people who can affect policy; we need funny, witty people to do blogs; we

need good communicators because they can potentially make life slightly better. Some people are comfortable not doing that like my sister for example, she is happy not doing that with her life. She says wild horses couldn’t make her do what I do. If you have a desire to do this kind of work, you will know pretty soon whether you are able to do it. I used to give myself one more year in the early days. I did stand up for five years. It is not an area to stay around in if it is not going to work.

How different is that connection to that with a sit down audience, at an event such as the Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival? I have really fallen in love with that format this year. It is like stand up without the jokes. You are engaging with people who have turned up because they are interested in the writing process, which interests me - there is so much in common already. There is so much positivity about people who read who want to go to gatherings where literary pursuits are discussed. I have enjoyed every one of the festivals I have done. It is a very new area for me, and I am really loving it… I am really looking forward to Rochdale, that it is going to be pretty amazing; I like coming up to the North.

This is our third festival so it is quite a new thing for Rochdale too… Well done for giving people that opportunity, for getting the funding and organising it. If it is there people will grow from it. If it is not,

they won’t. In general terms there has been a dip in reading but with lots of ways now to access books I think it is coming into its own. Also people are interested in writing themselves. People who come to events ask how do you start, how many hours do you put in? I would ask these questions of any author myself. I would have loved to have asked Agatha Christie what she got up to. It is fascinating to explore people’s minds and how they put ideas onto the page. So well done to everyone for putting on this Festival and hopefully everyone who turns up will get something from it.

How much of what you do as a stand-up comic, actress and author is from your imagination and how much based on your observations? For the novel, everything comes from my own perception and where I am at that time, although as we evolve we perceive things differently. What was alarming to me and terrifying aged 30 is probably not now – other things are now. So it depends where you are at, but if you are doing a role with a script you absorb it differently. I think thinking about things is not helpful to me - I just hope I can draw on something. What was it Laurence Olivier said? “Just turn up, remember your lines and don’t bump into the furniture”. Ab Fab the film is filming in October, it is like buses. October is the hot month.

CELEBRITY CHEF ANDREW NUTTER PUTS ON A ‘QUACKING’ NIGHT Nutters restaurant turned yellow to celebrate their 22nd birthday this year with the theme ‘two little ducks’, taken from the popular bingo term. Guests were greeted with a yellow carpet entrance of cocktails and canapés whilst the weather stayed dry to play games such as hooka-duck and bingo. Guests included Coronation Street’s Catherine Tyldesley and Masterchef winner Simon Wood, with Simon even taking to the canapé station to sear scallops for other guests. A five course menu followed, consisting of lobster hot pot, a “two little duck” starter, roast Seabass, beef fillet and a delicious raspberry dessert to finish off. Andrew quoted “I still pinch myself each year as to what the restaurant has achieved over the years. From starting out as the forty seater New Inn pub all those years ago to hosting this weekend’s events to over 400 guests. It has been a magical party – roll on our 23rd!!”

Style: Was it fun being a Dale mascot for the day? Corey: Yes it was, I had a great time! What did you get up to? I went on the pitch and played some football, went in the dressing room and had my picture taken with all the different players, had my programme signed by all the players. Then I walked out with the captain Jamie Allen before the start of the game, shook hands with all the opposition and had my picture taken with the officials. Who is your favourite player? Ian Henderson Do you have any tips for the Dale? No, cause they're playing really well!! I think they're doing excellent. What would you like to be when you grow up? I'd like to be a professional footballer! 22

THE NIGHT THE BEATLES PLAYED MIDDLETON The Beatles never played Rochdale during their touring years but they did appear at Middleton on Thursday April 11th 1963 at the Co-operative Hall in Long Street. This was the same day that their third single, ‘From Me To You’, was released and just before the true phenomenon of Beatlemania exploded. It must have been an unforgettable experience for the lucky three hundred or so young people who were there. Middleton was a ‘one nighter’ in a

THE NEW ICONIC MAZDA MX-5 It’s easy to spot a quiet news day in local newspapers as they inevitably have a nostalgia page with a picture of the local high street. If it was taken in the seventies you can more or less guarantee that the cars on show will feature at least one British sports car, be it an MGB or Triumph Spitfire. Over the years, the economy sports car has been killed off by the hot hatch but one manufacturer has kept the spirit alive - Mazda. Over the years I have made no secret of my love for the Mazda MX-5. IT is the very essence of what a true sports car should be - Simple, quick and fun.

But what you have in an MX-5 is the spirit of a traditional British roadster combined with Japanese build quality and reliability. These factors have combined to win the hearts of over a million buyers worldwide since the little Mazda was launched twenty years ago. The latest fourth generation car has just gone on sale and greeting an updated version of a favourite car is a bit like when your partner goes to the hairdressers, you just hope and pray that you like the new style as you are going to have to live with it. That said I was 26

pleasantly surprised when I first saw the pictures and even happier when it appeared in the flesh.

Mazda has gone straight back to its roots with the new generation car being the shortest ever and utilising a 130bhp, 1.5-litre engine to power the base

That said, driving the MX-5 is not about power but control. The MX-5 really makes you feel ‘involved’ with what is going on. The feedback from

the steering gives you almost subliminal information about the road being covered while the twitches from the rear two wheels under heavy acceleration can be easily controlled way before anything becomes too sideways.

model. If you want a bit more oomph, you can also specify a 2.0-litre 158bhp unit which gets to 60mph in 7.3 seconds, 1.2 seconds quicker than the smaller unit.

Mazda has always used the philosophy Jinba Ittai when designing the four generations of MX-5. Its meaning relates to the relationship between a rider and the horse. I couldn’t have put it better myself. No other car feels in tune or as connected, even cars that retail at four times the price. Only one car can better it, and

that’s the Aerial Atom and you wouldn’t use that on a daily basis in February, in the rain and cold. Don’t fancy spending upwards of the £18,495 asking price of the base model? No problem. A few years ago I invested the princely sum of £900 I have invested in a 1994 1.8i original as a toy for the summer. After a light restoration it drives just as well as when it came out of the showroom 21-years ago, costs £90 a year to insure on a classic policy and is an absolutely invigorating out on the open roads, especially at dawn on a crisp winter’s morning. There are plenty of examples out there at the minute at bargain prices but watch out for the dreaded rust, especially along the sills and rear arches. Engines are pretty bullet proof and don’t let Japanese imports put you off. They are generally better spec’d than British cars but make sure they have been properly undersealed. Mark D’Apice 27

ABC Cinema

Rochdale Cinema Trail The new shopping and leisure scheme for Rochdale town centre on the site of the old council offices and bus station includes plans for a multiplex cinema. Ironically, this will be very near to The Regal Moon on the Butts, whose name refers to the building’s earlier role as the Regal Cinema, later renamed the ABC and, finally, Cannon.

D

uring the last century Rochdale had many cinemas and this trail is intended to help Style readers find the whereabouts of some of them. We will start outside The Regal Moon. This cinema was the last one to be built in the town in 1938 and the last one to be closed in 1992, having ‘escaped’ becoming a bingo hall in 1975. Three years later, in 1978, this the now ABC cinema - was ‘tripled’ with three screens being provided within the building. Sadly, the popularity of home video

28

www.rochdalestyle.com

and the new multiplex at Pilsworth caused attendances to plummet at Rochdale. The cinema did indeed briefly become Ritz Bingo, before its transformation into a Wetherspoons in 1997. Pevsner’s Buildings Of England notes the ‘extraordinary balustrade, like an abacus’ on the front of the building. It is good to see such a successful conversion of one of our town’s most famous buildings; not all of Rochdale’s former cinemas have been so lucky and survived, as we shall see.

the smaller Rochdale cinemas, with just over 800 seats, King’s was opened in 1922 and converted for ‘talkies’ seven years later. It closed in 1969, briefly becoming an Asian social centre. In 1972, it was converted into King’s Bingo but the building has been empty for many years and is currently up for sale. Unfortunately, this former cinema is unremarkable on the outside and has been completely gutted inside. If only the Rialto/Odeon had been spared instead! Now we return to the town centre. It will be wonderful for Rochdale town centre to have a cinema again after an absence of about a quarter of a century. This writer remembers going to see ‘E.T’. at the ABC cinema in 1983 and wondering why he could hear so many sniffles during the screening. No, Rochdale was not suffering from a common cold epidemic, it was grown women (and men!) crying while watching the Steven Spielberg classic! That is the extraordinary power of communal film watching; forget DVDs and Netflix! Leave The Regal Moon behind you and head for Town Hall Square. On your left on what is strictly Packer Street, just before the Flying Horse pub was the Empire (now Darli’s Bar). Built in 1904, the Empire was originally a music hall but soon became a cinema known as Pringles Picture Palace. It reopened as the Empire De Luxe Cinema in 1930 with a new curved balcony which replaced the original horseshoe shaped one. There were 1,150 seats. In the 1950’s, this cinema was converted to a bingo hall, before becoming a bar in 1995. If you look carefully, you can see the name ‘Empire Hall’ carved into the masonry at the top of the central bay. Unfortunately, a tall sycamore tree obscures the left hand side of the building, but the stonework and stained glass windows are still impressive. An unusual feature is a speakers’ balcony above the entrance. Walk past the Flying Horse and turn left up Nelson Street, crossing Church Lane; go past the World Buffet and turn right when you reach Drake Street; go past Champness Hall and the next road on the right is Great George Street. On the immediate right was the Palace Picture House which opened in 1911 with 1200 seats. By 1930 this was known as the Palace Tudor Super Cinema. It closed at the end of August in 1968. The Palace became the Euro/Asian Film Club for the next 13 years. The building was then a nightclub called Scene One, but was destroyed by fire in 1987. The club was rebuilt as Xanadu’s which was closed and demolished in 2002. Nearby was the much-loved Carlton Ballroom, which has also now disappeared.

Continue along Drake Street and, at the junction with Oldham Road and Milnrow Road, was the Rialto cinema. The Rialto was officially opened in 1929 by Gracie Fields. It was taken over by Gaumont in 1957, finally becoming the Odeon two years later. This extraordinary building was Rochdale’s grandest picture house with marble steps leading to a foyer with stained glass windows and depicting scenes of Venice’s Rialto Bridge and Grand Canal. Upstairs, a café lounge - with seating for 160 customers - was lined with real mahogany panelling. Plush carpeted aisles led to a huge auditorium with over 1800 seats. These cinemas were accurately described in the 1930’s as ‘dream palaces’ taking audiences into a world far away from their difficult and unglamorous lives during the Depression. Seeing Hollywood movies on the big silver screen must have been an unforgettable experience. The cinema closed in 1975 and lay empty for several years. There were plans by the Rank Organisation to turn it into a skateboard arena but these came to nothing. Eventually, this wonderful cinema was demolished and replaced by an MFI store. At present, the site – overlooking Wet Rake – is waste ground and enclosed by wooden fencing. In 2015 it is extremely hard to imagine a luxury cinema ever being there. The cinema must have given this part of town a real focal point and a memorable meeting place. Younger readers should ask older relatives if they are in any doubt!

RIALTO Cinema

The new cinema will be convenient for the Transport Interchange and I am sure that it will be popular with families. A cinema in a town centre acts as a magnet and springboard for other facilities – such as shops, restaurants and bars - will benefit, too. There will also be a welcome and positive addition to this Rochdale cinema trail! FALL into Fashion... So, summer is over (did it ever really begin?!) which means it’s time to start shopping for your autumn wardrobe! And because it’s not too chilly yet it’d be quite nice to be able to get a bit more wear out of some of our summer clothes before we’ve to start de-icing the car. Planning ahead is a great way to make sure that when you do go on your shopping spree your new purchases actually work together and will slot in with your existing wardrobe seamlessly. It also means that you don't end up with far too many unnecessary or mismatched pieces and that dreaded guilty feeling in the pit of your stomach. Here are some key pieces that are available all over the high street, some of which you may already have in your wardrobe – either way they will make the transition from summer to autumn wardrobe pretty much effortless...

BOOTIES, OR THE UNASSUMING ANKLE BOOT are another piece you probably have several of in your wardrobe. Black, tan, brown, grey; all can be worn with denim cut offs or tailored shorts in summer, which you can then simply swap for skinny jeans as autumn rolls in.

PATTERNED SILK SCARVES are eminently versatile because they can be used as a casual beach sarong or knotted and worn as a head wrap in summer, and can be artfully draped or tied jauntily around the neck in autumn to add interest to a simple jeans and tee combo.

FLOPPY HATS show no signs of diminishing in popularity, no doubt because of their ultra-wearable flexibility – they were great for those (occasional) sunny summer days but will also provide a little protection from the inevitable autumn showers as the temperature drops. Colours like camel, charcoal and burgundy are quite neutral and will complement much of your existing wardrobe while adding a splash of grownup colour, or you could always opt for a classic and timeless black. The humble floppy hat fulfils the dual purpose of adding a touch of 70s sophistication to your outfit while disguising the fact that you haven’t done your hair that day – result.

IN THE SHOE DEPARTMENT, pointy toed pumps or loafers will complement pretty much any outfit combination, from summery floral dresses to autumnal tailored trousers at the office, without sacrificing comfort for style. Purchase in different fabrics and textures, such as velvet or patent, to lend a little opulence to your feet. For evening, lace up heels have been floating around for quite a while now, and the lace up heeled boot is a great multi-purpose heel that avoids falling into the trap of ‘boring’ because it is so easily paired with an evening dress or even a pair of jeans.

Brown suede lace up heels available from River Island

LEATHER, LEATHER, LEATHER. It’s a classic for a reason. Leather shorts look fabulous and just a little edgy worn with a white tee and strappy leather sandals in summer, and equally good with a simple denim shirt and boots as the days get shorter. And the leather jacket the more beat up the better in my opinion - is the ultimate staple which functions year round as a cover-up and which bequeaths a little je ne sais quoi to pretty much any outfit.

CHUNKY JEWELLERY PIECES, featuring semi-precious stones such as opals, moonstones or turquoise, give an injection of unconventional luxury to your look, adding a pop of colour while still being affordable and unique. A great way to create a distinctive look is to layer jewellery that has similar elements, such as a chunky topaz necklace with a simple chain pendant, lending a little chutzpah to an otherwise simple ensemble.

Don’t forget your make up bag either, which can be an inexpensive route to updating your overall style, and a pretty easy way to mark the shift from summer to autumn. Introduce deeper hues to your morning (and evening) beauty routine, and opt for rich and refined matte-finish wines and plums for lips which brighten your complexion and harmonise with soft greys, cobalts and forest greens for nails.

THE BLAZER is an autumn hero piece which can be worn over summer dresses to take you into the season, upgrading your look from boho beach girl to relaxed office chic, and can be worn year after year.

Golds, chocolate browns and charcoals for eyes are great for adding a little more drama to your look and look great as the nights start to draw in, bestowing warmth and texture which compensates for the fade of that summer glow. Go forth and shop, my pretties.

A FRESH FACED COMPLEXION – Beauty this season starts with a fresh-faced complexion. It’s all about the perfect even skin tone and the no-make up, make up look. As we all know great make up starts with great skincare. It’s really important that we look after our skin and don’t take for granted that how good it looks today is the way it will stay. Our skin needs love, care and attention; it needs nourishment hydration and protection. A good skin care routine starts with a cleanse and tone; whether you prefer a foam wash, a micellar water, a cleansing milk and toner or an all in one product it doesn’t matter, as long as you are cleansing the skin to remove daily impurities and toning to rebalance the skins natural PH balance. If you have ever wondered how that lady in your office has the perfect glowing complexion the secret is a serum and cream! Serums are water-like fluids filled with powerful ingredients and rich in vitamins and antioxidants that will soak into the skin and transform the hydration levels of your skin to plump and restore your skins texture and elasticity. ULTIMATE LASHES - Luscious lashes are on trend this autumn. The more natural the better. There are several methods of enhancing the lashes such as LVL LASHES, which is a great natural treatment for lashes, where the lashes are permed vertically and completely lifted, then tinted in rich black for optimal results and definition. This treatment takes 45 minutes and the results can last up to 6 weeks. If you would prefer a little extra volume and length then I would recommend a semipermanent lash. I would recommend the la la lash, which is an individual lash attached to your natural lashes to achieve volume and length. La la lashes last up to 2 weeks. If lash enhancements aren’t for you and you are a natural beauty then a really super volumising mascara can create lift and volume. GLOWING TAN - As we head into the cooler autumn months it is still nice to keep

the glow of summer on our skin. Whether you have been on a summer holiday and have a deep tan or have picked up a sun kissed glow from gardening or festivals, it’s great to maintain that colour as we head towards the coming season. To maintain your tan you need to keep the skin moisturised to prevent flaking and peeling. I would recommend a tan booster moisturiser with a hint of colour to keep your skin hydrated and nourished. REJUVENATED SKIN - Perfect collagen induced skin can now be achieved through micro needling and there’s no better season to try it. Cooler weather and less sun exposure is a great time to try the Dermapen; a micro needling treatment that rejuvenates the skin, eradicates lines and wrinkles, and disperses melanin and pigmentation leaving a clearer complexion. It also calms rosacea and smooths the contours of scarring including acne scarring.

FR E E consu ser um ever y ltation for re Emma ader with at T Retre at – S he to ava ubject ilabilit y. PERFECT NAILS - The trend this season is rich deep colours on the nails in a high gloss shine. The best way to achieve this look is with a gel polish; I would recommend Gelish for high gloss shine and long lasting polish that doesn’t chip or smudge for 2 weeks. Leading the trend this autumn is the Urban Cowgirl collection by Gelish. This collection of on-trend colours will see you through the season, with a colour to match every outfit, from rich molton chocolates to deep purples, pretty nudes and even a dusky pink with hues which complement the autumn wardrobe. This collection will leave you saying ‘Yee-har’ as you leave the salon with the perfect nails this season.

REVEALING THE RIVER ROCH

ABOUT… The project to uncover the River Roch and reveal its historic bridge will boost Rochdale’s heritage, as well as improving the biodiveristy of the river and reducing flood risk in the town centre. There are also plenty of opportunities for our residents and visitors to get involved in this unique project. We’re running a whole host of activities, from ecology sessions for the kids to knitting workshops. People can also enjoy spooky River Roch-themed ghost walks, led by local actor Colin Meredith. There’s something for everyone, and best of all, most activities are free.

ECOLOGY SESSIONS Let the youngsters become scientists or engineers for an hour! They can build their own mini waterway and learn about rivers using our interactive table to see what happens when the river meets obstacles and experiment with different objects to change the river's flow. They can also discover the animals which make the river their home, including otter and bullhead fish, and come face-to-face with creatures including the stickleback, caddisflies, and the stone loach. If there’s still time left, visitors can try on some historic fancy dress and mess around in our sandpit. COST: FREE Location: Revealing the Roch Information Centre, Number 5 South Parade (formerly Bar 5), Rochdale, OL16 1LR NO BOOKING REQUIRED, DROP IN. Opening times and dates: 10am to 1pm and 1.30 and 4pm on the last Saturday of every month, excluding September 2015. The September session will be held on Saturday 19 September 2015.

KNITTING WORKSHOPS You don’t have to be an expert with the knitting needles to have a go at these sessions. Here you will help local artist Alison Cooper put together a specially knitted hoarding, which will be placed on the railings around the newly reopened river next year as a temporary art installation. Alison, who regularly runs knitting sessions at Touchstones Rochdale, is working on a design which takes its inspiration from the wildlife you find in the River Roch. Attendees will get the chance to knit sections of the artwork, with all equipment and wool provided. All levels of experience welcome. Cost: FREE Booking required: email revealingtheroch@rochdale.gov.uk Dates, times and locations: • Friday 2 October, Spotland Library, 2-4pm • Thursday 22 October, Castleton Library, 2-4pm • Tuesday 27 October. Rochdale-based company, Bowser Supply Ltd, is on a mission to change the lives of thousands of Romanian stray dogs. Over the past few years the company, based in Shawclough, has funded many wagons full of aid to be sent over to various animal shelters in Romania.

Managing Director and animal lover, Wendy Owen, recently visited the country and was heartbroken to see the terrible conditions the dogs are subject to. Wendy commented: “The dogs are treated as vermin and live on the streets in horrific conditions; a lot of them become ill. For years, despite efforts from voluntary organisations to spay and neuter, the amount of stray dogs on the streets of Romania has escalated. There are public shelters, which are in

40

www.rochdalestyle.com

essence death camps for the dogs who are subjected to the most inhumane treatment.” Thankfully, there are also private shelters who rely on donations from the public and charities. With their help, many dogs are rescued from the public shelters and streets, neutered, vaccinated and receive veterinary treatment. These lucky few are then offered for adoption worldwide. Wendy commented: “On my recent visit I found a dog (Harry) by the side of the road that had been run over. He is now recovering and living with me, Bobbie another Romanian rescue, and Pippa - an English rescue dog.”

“These dogs make excellent pets – it's as if they know how lucky they are – and that they

have had a lucky escape – and they are very grateful”, added Wendy. Bowser Supply Ltd have been collecting much-needed items for the dogs, such as beds, blankets, food, toys, worming tablets, flea sprays, grooming kits and coats. All donations are gratefully accepted. Donations can be dropped off at Bowser Supply Ltd, Unit 8, Shawclough Trading Estate, Shawclough Road, Rochdale, OL12 6ND or free collection can be arranged. Monetary donations can also be sent via Paypal. Please contact Wendy on 01706 655132 or by email wendy@bowsersupply.com. If you are interested in provided a loving home for a Romanian dog please contact Wendy for more information on the process. (Please note there is an adoption fee, but all dogs come with a legal passport and are fully vaccinated, wormed etc).

RAILWAY STATION UNDERPASS REOPENS The Miall Street underpass entrance to Rochdale railway station was officially opened on 10th July. The southern entrance to the station had been closed in 1979 and had fallen into disrepair. The reopening of the subway will enable Rochdale Council to develop their Station Gateway Master Plan which has been designed to transform the surrounding area.

The subway has been furnished with new signs, railings, LED lighting, CCTV, concrete flooring and a new drainage system. Many of the heritage features from the original subway have been kept and restored including the ironwork, bridge decks, heritage railings and the tiling inside the tunnel. Historic photographs of how the

44

www.rochdalestyle.com

station used to look are featured on the walls and railings. Reopening of the underpass from Miall Street has already had many benefits for travellers and residents. It provides a direct route to both the railway station and the Metrolink station from the new park and ride facility on Hare Street. This well-lit, free car park has spaces for 200 cars, as well as 13 spaces reserved for disabled vehicles and four spaces for electric vehicles to charge their batteries. There is also ample space for motorcycle parking. Even after a few weeks, it is clear that the reopening of the subway has increased the use of this car park by commuters and encouraged greater use of public transport. In the past, users of this carpark had a long walk to the station via

either Richard Street or Milkstone Road. The work has been funded by Transport for Greater Manchester, Network Rail and Rochdale Borough Council. This important development is part of a bigger scheme to improve services at the station through the government’s £600 million Northern Hub which will increase capacity on the rail network. This scheme will see Rochdale benefit from a range of improvements including enabling a possible boost to the number of fast trains travelling from Rochdale to Manchester. Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of Transport for Greater Manchester said, “ By improving passenger access to the car park, train platforms and Metrolink stop and cutting the walking distance by up to 300 metres, the project enables public transport users to get around more quickly and easily in a much more safe and secure environment.” Richard Lysons

RsPCa RoCHDaLe NeWs

the Rochdale animal Centre, right in the heart of Rochdale, rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes hundreds of animals every year. Most of the animals are brought to the centre by RsPCa inspectors having been rescued from cruel treatment, abandonment and other distressing situations.

SPECIAL APPEALS…

Washing Machine Appeal – One of our volunteers, Barbara, undertook a walk along the Rochdale Canal from Manchester to Todmorden to raise funds for a new industrial size washing machine at the centre. Her fantastic effort plus other donations raised £1,300 for the appeal.

There are some lovely cats, kittens and rabbits and other small pets in the animal centre on Redcross Street waiting for loving new homes.

One new resident is Pootle who was brought in after being hit by a car and breaking her pelvis. She has been on cage rest and pain relief for 5 weeks and is doing well. Once again this cat was not chipped so we have not been able to trace her owners and no one has reported her missing. We microchip at the centre for just £12 per pet - this includes dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets.

In order to provide these services we have to fundraise throughout the year. We receive no government funding and rely on local support. If you want to visit the centre to see the valuable work done by our wonderful staff and volunteers it is open to the public six days a week 11.30am until 3.30pm, only closing on Wednesdays. Dates FoR YoUR DiaRY…

GRAND AUTUMN RAFFLE 1st PRize Cinderella Makeover worth £1,000, 2ND PRize Paintball experience for up to 10 people worth £100. 3RD PRize Champneys Luxury Foot Spa. Tickets are £1 each, available from all the Rochdale RSPCA shops & the Animal Centre. The draw will take place on 17th Oct at the Autumn Fair.

sat 17tH oCt - Autumn Fair to be held at the Animal Centre on Redcross Street. Entry is £1 but enjoy a free tea/coffee and cake after looking around the stalls.

Stall at the Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre

sat 28tH Nov - Coffee Morning at the Animal Centre, with a Tree of Remembrance for pet owners to remember their pets.

Update on Victor - This beautiful cat had been hit by a car and was rushed to the vet by a kind hearted passer-by. He had major injuries but has now made a full recovery and has gone to live in Littleborough with a lovely lady called Glenys. He has settled very well and is being totally spoilt. Thank you to everyone who responded to our appeal to help pay for his treatment.

RECENT SUPPORTERS…

The Alan Bracewell Big Band put on a fantastic evening at the Packhorse Inn, Birtle. Thanks to Carol the landlady for hosting the evening and to Val for organising the raffle and selling tickets. The evening raised a fabulous £150.

Holy Trinity School, Littleborough invited us to their Fair in June where we raised £50.

Littleborough Rushbearing Festival was once again a wonderful event and we raised £230.

Stuart Wade of Vetsonic, makers of Nutriscience products, presented Jean Spencer, Animal Centre Manager, with over £1,000 of stock. If you own your own business and feel you can help, for example through sponsorship or hosting an event, please get in touch.

sat 28tH Nov - Stall at Littleborough Christmas Lights Switch on

AND FINALLY… There are so many ways we try to raise funds to run the animal centre. We recently set up an Amazon Wish List which has lots of items, large and small, that you can buy for us to use in the Animal Centre. For more details see the link on our website. We also raise money by recycling used postage stamps, foreign

coins/notes and any old coins, mobile phones, ink cartridges, old & broken jewellery (even costume jewellery). If you feel you would like to volunteer for the RSPCA there are opportunities in our shops and in the animal centre.

For advice or information on any of the above please ring the RSPCA on 01706 861897, check the website www.rspca-rochdale.org.uk or find us on facebook. | Rochdale Animal Centre, 1 Redcross St, Rochdale OL12 0NZ 48

WHITWORTH RUSHCART ANOTHER OUTSTANDING SUCCESS The annual Whitworth Rushcart event was held on Sunday 6 September in glorious late summer weather and attracted crowds of around 1,500 people over the course of the afternoon.

Photos courtesy of Mark Jolly

The festivities began with a procession from North Street up to the Riverside, featuring morris dance troupes, the Whitworth Vale and Healey Bands, the Mayor of Whitworth, the Thwaites Shire Horses and dray (cart) and of course the Rushcart itself, resplendent in purple heather collected from local hills in the weeks before the event by the Whitworth Rushcart Men and pulled by the men themselves. Following the procession, celebrations were centred on the Riverside itself. Inside was an arts and crafts fair, featuring local artisans and displays from the local Historical Society. On the car park there were rides and

inflatables, arts and craft stalls, refreshments and performances from the various morris dance troupes. The event is organised by the town’s Tourism and Leisure Committee; Committee Chairman Councillor David Chorlton said: “This year’s Rushcart went brilliantly well, and the response that we’ve had from the stallholders, dancers and the general public has been very positive. On behalf of the Committee I would like to thank our local Police, marshals, stallholders, dance troupes, and the staff at the Riverside who worked tirelessly, and Clive Morton, whose input is invaluable.” www.rochdalestyle.com

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE

rochdale News & events if everyone does something small, it amounts to fantastic fundraising! Same time next year with Go Green 16 set for Friday 13th May.

Once again the amazing people of Rochdale, Middleton and Heywood have come out in force, supporting the Hospice and ensuring the services they offer carry on being available free of charge to their own communities. This year’s Hospice to Hospice Walk had a record turn out with 300 walkers, some accompanied by their four legged friends, walking to Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Oldham, before returning back to Springhill to rest their tired legs. The sun shone all day, making the 7.25 mile route even more enjoyable. Record numbers produced record fundraising with sponsorship hitting an astonishing £11.5k. “We’ve already got requests for places on next year’s walk on Sunday 24th April”, said organiser Lillie Winterbottom, adding “To break more records would be beyond our wildest dreams but with support for this event growing each year, we’re hopeful”.

A new one for the Hospice this July was Springy’s Moonlit Sprint or Stroll. Supporters dressed in bespoke Springystyle onesies and walked a 10km circular route, starting and finishing at Rochdale’s Rugby Union Club in Bamford. The evening went ‘hoppingly’, beginning with a Zumba warm up from Becky Smithies and even celebrity chef, Andrew Nutter got into the spirit by driving around, dropping off gourmet snacks to anyone dressed in a frog suit. “We had just over 100 frogs springing around the route, between them raising a phenomenal £8.5k. The feedback we received from the night was brilliant” said Lillie Winterbottom. The hospice are hoping this year’s event will spawn something even bigger and better next year… A week of dark clouds and rain didn’t bode well but, as with last year, the sun put his hat on for Springhill Hospice’s Summer Serenade on 25th July. GMP Male Voice Choir, Heywood’s The Voice, The Rochdale Wind Band and soloist Shelley Byrne were introduced to a full audience in the grounds of the Hospice by compere Ian Jenkins. Another special night of fundraising at Springhill. The sun didn’t just come out in style for the summer serenade, it scheduled a visit for the Hospice’s Open Garden Day on 9th August. Nick the gardener, helped ably by his apprentice Harry and an army of volunteers, weeded, deadheaded, mowed, pruned and planted throughout the award winning Hospice grounds, in preparation for the hundreds who turned out for a tour. A flower arranging demonstration, hanging basket lesson and garden produce sale only added to a fabulous day that raised nearly £1400.

Rochdalian Martin Wolfenden was saddened to arrive at the realisation that his beloved 188-year-old beech tree, which once stood proudly over his Springhill garden, may have to be uprooted, after its partial collapse. He then had the idea of incorporating his love of local wildlife into the tree and sought the skill of professional chainsaw sculptor, Mick Burns, to transform his meaningful mass of wood into an intricate work of art. The bulk of the tree now comprises of three large toadstools which provide a red squirrel and a robin with a place to perch, whilst on the face of the tree lies a comical allusion ‘RIP Mr Beech 1826-2014’. Mick also created a hedgehog and fox from excess wood which adds even more unique charm and character.

WARDLE YOUNG WIVES… FRIENDS 46 YEARS ON!

YEARSLEY GROUP TACKLE THE YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS

Over the past 2 months employees from Yearsley Group have taken on the arduous Yorkshire three peaks challenge in aid of four National Charities; Cancer Research, Parkinson’s UK, British Heart Foundation and Help for Heroes. The big charity push celebrates Yearsley Group’s 60 years in business with the company planning to raise £60,000 by the end of 2015. The 24 mile trek in the Yorkshire Dales National Park takes in the summits of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, a total climb of 5200 feet. Fifteen staff faced the arduous climb including directors Harry Yearsley and Jonathan Baker. Harry Yearsley commented, ‘This year the team at Yearsley Group has pulled out all the stops with an amazing range of fundraising feats to help us reach our £60,000 target. From the three peaks challenge, to tough mudder in September, to sponsored slims and bake sales, the enthusiasm of the company has already seen us raise almost £42,000 for charity, well on our way to the £60k target by the end of the year!’

The Wardle Young Wives Group was formed in 1969, providing a regular evening out where newcomers to the village could get acquainted with people of their own age. In recent years, the now retired wives, enjoy day trips, theatre trips and meals out. Member Janet Bracegirdle explained: “Coaches were hired when trips and visits were arranged many years ago, but we are now able to make use of our bus and train passes!!” Janet continued: “Subscriptions were 10p per session when the group was formed and the monies went to various charities including Birch Hill Hospital Laser Eye Department, Wardle Playgroup, Wardle Carnival Committee, St. James Church and the village school, Springhill Hospice etc. In the later years, we became very involved with Springhill Hospice and some of our members are now volunteers.” The community group were involved in a campaign to keep the local library open and the group also took over the organisation and fundraising for the village bonfire. Janet added: “Many new and lasting friendships have been forged between us and all our families have remained close. All members are still very involved in Wardle village activities.”
