“I strongly believe an illustrator is like a story-teller. Illustrations should explore the wonders and beauty of our world - the many aspects of the human nature

The Maiden and the Mekaneko: Illustration done for a contest at Cafesale, France. The Mekaneko (the little cat-robot) is a character created by Matteo de Longis, while the girl is an original character of mine from a comic book project I did in 2010. I did not win the contest, but this image was a Daily Deviation on deviantART.

The Victorian Circus: Commissioned illustration for “Coyote Mag”, a French magazine. One of my favorite illustrations so far!

“Painting is a necessity, the deepest way I know to express myself”

Gold and Turquoise: A High Fantasy illustration done for an online magazine. I’ve always had a passion for drawing fairies and plants.

Tale of a Butterfly: Cover illustration of my first art-book published in France by Le Calepin Jaune Editions in 2009. The book is a collection of illustrations done during 2007 and 2008. Making this book was such a great experience, I hope I can work on more art-books in the future!

Romance is boring: Illustration done for the ‘Fan Appreciation Giveaway’ over my blog :) Title of the image is based on a song by “Los Campesinos” and I think this is one of the most popular images I did in the latest two years.

The Canary Prince: I love folktales! Sooner or later, I would like to draw a whole series of images based on popular Italian folktales like “The Canary Prince.

KBiTKa: The title means “flower” in Ukrainian. It was a portrait I made for a special girl I met. She has wonderful eyes and a beautiful heart.

23

24

Hidden Spring: I tried to represent the beauty that some women hide because people never told them they were pretty.

Give me a hope: I tried to recreate an imaginary goddess, always returning for the ancient search for beauty.

Dream about you: I tried to represent the love we feel for somebody who is no longer with us.

25

Blue Spring: The beauty of a woman attempting to find sadness in a lovely season.

“Creating one’s own illustrations is like doing magic with our hands”

Bella en la lluvia: This was inspired by one of Luis Royo’s illustrations. In mine, I added two lions on the columns. His work is a great source of inspiration.

35

Hechicera del rĂo: This painting was inspired by the countless legends about women who could manipulate their surroundings for their own benefit - in this case, through her enchanting beauty and abilities in magic. If something goes wrong, she has her incredible feline guardians to help her settle the situation.

36

La Sirena: This painting was inspired by the legends of sailors throughout the oceans of the world who speak about these encounters. In this case, it seems like there was a shipwreck, leaving the sailor unconscious, but he is being saved by an angel of the sea - a siren.

37

38

Princesa del viento: This is a portrayal of a dream in which there were castles and palaces floating in the air. A princess and her winged lion friend are watching the sunset from a cornice made of rock, water and wind.

Far far away: I’ve always loved this car (the 58’s Plymouth Fury). When I was a child, I read “Christine” by Stephen King, in which the protagonist was a car that murdered those who made fun of its owner. The first version of this car was “clean”, as if it was new. Then I made another version in which the car was old and dirty, and even then, with that abandoned aspect, I still liked it.

My Sweet Fairy Cyberpunk: When I began working on this, I knew it would end up being different from everything else in my gallery, since until that moment I had always modeled serious characters. But this time, I based myself on my cartoonish drawing style.

48

Medieval street: This is the first work I’ve done in 3D. It was made using primary objects such as boxes and cylinders. My inspiration came from the streets of Disney’s wonderful animated movie “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”.

49

“Modeling is one of the most creative parts of the whole process 50

The arrival: This scene was inspired by the amazing Stefan Morrell. The original idea was to create a robot in the middle of the street destroying everything around, but I was so anxious to finish this that I put a UFO instead ... and those always look good.

“3D gives you infinite posibilities of artistic creation”

Nebulaty Zero: With this work I tried to create a futuristic information module which gives out an idea of a megalopolis in its interior. The shape is sophisticated but stylized at the same time.

53

Ethernal Light: The purpose of this work is the portrayal of the search for a universal source and our egos’ walk towards it, along with our own little founts of light, having illumination as goal.

Nebulaty Ámbar: By creating this, I wanted to portray an energy-based protection module, inspired by clean future technologies. The module’s content is classified matter.

54

Ancient Astronauts: Intelligent aliens visited the Earth a long time ago and made contact with humans that is the main idea of this work.

55

Eden Archives: Is the place where all the history of this planet is stored and archived in high-tech devices. Some ancient artifacts are also stored here, at the other side of the compound.

57

Good morning computer: It was an ordinary day for her to start her duties at the “Blue Sector” communications station.

“Art is the way people choose to leave their mark on this world” Taurus: Was a spacecraft built for intergalactic routes. The interior design was inspired by the curves of the horns of Taurus. The meeting room on the office level was used to debate important matters such as the defense systems of the ship or for discussions about its maintenance and upgrades. Most of the important data was stored in this state-of-the-art high-security room.

58

“I’m inspired by different space-time continuums, or in other words, alternate universes where everything is possible”

59

Peregrine Falcon: It has taken it’s name from the bird, which is the fastest living animal on our planet, can reach up to speeds like 240 miles per hour. This floor of the ship holds a cryogenic laboratory of Mittelos Bioscience. These systems are used to animate-inanimate people during very long space voyages.

Lady of the crows: For this image, I used an effect that I really like, which is the effect of disintegration. I love the final result.

63

Warrior of Time: With this work I wanted to portray a female warrior of time, an image with both fantasy and action.

“Imagination let your dreams come true, you can create whatever you want, it’s fascinating!!”

64

“I would love to share my art with the world and people know my work

Butterflies and Ravens: In this artwork, it was my aim to display delicacy. The butterflies and the crows complete the picture by giving it a slight dark overtone.

65

Floating Islands: To create this image, I got my inspiration from the movie “Avatar. I wanted to portray a kingdom on floating islands.

“For me, art is a way to escape from reality, a way of expressing my fears, my wishes. It’s like entering a dream, always different, magical and eternal...” Crimson Leaves: Nature is always in my creations. Red and crimson are my favorite colors. Here, I wanted to recreate a peaceful landscape, like a dream in a forest.

68

Dangerous Heaven: For this artwork, I wanted to create something different - fears, unspoken secrets. Thus why I chose a foggy and stormy background and, as in all my work, the desaturated colors.

70

Death and Silence: Death and silence are always together. To create this work, I inspired myself in the feelings of loneliness, emptiness and desolation. The red and grey tones were used to represent sadness.

71

“The incredible thing about photomanipulation is the fact that you can imagine something and make it true even in just one image

72

Emeralds Stolen: I love crows, I’ve always wanted to create something with them, and I greatly enjoyed making this image. I chose the green color for its strength and to better highlight the dark and mysterious atmosphere.

Chant of Roses: Music is my greatest inspiration, so I did this as a tribute to it. I tried to symbolize how it makes me feel, how it surrounds everything with a romantic atmosphere.

“While hearing a song I create certain pictures in my mind and I want to see them come alive, I want to have a live sense of that specific song that I like so much” Requiem: This is a commission I did for photographer isahn.deviantart.com. An emotional piece, relating death to the dance of butterflies.

75

Cherry Bomb: Commission with the model. A conceptual dark piece, trying to display something like a fairy tale, but in a twisted way.

76

Digital Art

Totoro’s Forest: I love everything related to Studio Ghibli and I’m a big fan of Totoro and the world that surrounds him. This illustration was a challenge for me, mainly in creating the right atmosphere for Totoro, the magical feeling that solely Studio Ghibli knows how to capture and recreate. It’s really hard to find this thin line between what is real and what isn’t in the illustrations by this studio.

Roberto nieto http://syntetyc.com http://syntetyc.deviantart.com http://www.facebook.com/artofsyntetyc

79

Dusk in the forest: I wanted to create a calm and magical noctural scenery in a forest. They don’t always need to be scary places related to fear. Above all, I wanted to present a beautiful place, in spite of the surrounding darkness.

“Fantasy worlds are an inexhaustible source of inspiration”

80

Totoro and Mei: This scene could be any day in Mei’s life, visiting the forest and looking for Totoro, who, by being a character that is not always visible, made me want to present the scene as a search and, at the same time, as a game. This illustration was also a study of vegetation and water. I dedicated more time to these two elements because they can both give so much life to an image. Achieving a dense vegetation and a clear water took me many hours of practicing. I still need to practice more but this result still makes me happy.

81

Mononoke Hime: The forest from “Princess Mononoke” has always impressed me - it’s so full of details, lights, shadows and a vivid nature that is so hard to capture in a motionless image. This illustration was a real challenge for me, as I wanted to achieve that sensation of life without losing the touch of darkness and magic so characteristic of the movie. I obsessed myself with trying to reach such a high level of detailing. I think this is one of the most complex works I’ve ever done.

Waterfall kingdom: Represents my fascination for fantasy worlds, great kingdoms and castles built in impossible places. This illustration also served me as a study of light on different surfaces. It was very complex to do, given the difficulty to understand the behavior of light.

82

“Constancy and practice will make things you initially thought were impossible much easier to do

83

84

Waterfall Temple: For me, Asian landscapes have always been a motive of study since my very first steps in the world of illustration. Here, I wanted to give the landscape an oriental touch, but without making it too evident.

“Before creating a character, I think of every possible shape that comes to mind and how I want them to look like

Dream of Valentine: An illustration of a flower that wishes to find her valentine.

86

Pawies: I designed these characters called “The Pawies” (a group of 5 animals) for a product campagin. I made this piece look like a side-scrolling game in case the client wants to further develop the project into a simple browser game.

“When I’m looking for inspiration, I prefer to sketch traditionally”

88

Don’t run mosquito!: Is an illustration for a children’s book which teaches kids not to fear bugs. In the book, the little girl will go around the house, finding many kinds of insects.

89

Ocean breath: Close your eyes and breath...

90

Hidden Garden: A magical garden lost in the depths and immensity of the forest.

“I believe inspiration is everywhere. It’s up to us to find it”

Blade runner: Is a mix of sculptures painted over with a physical airbrush with gold/bronze paint and then photographed and arranged with existing stock imagery (both personal and others used with permission from iStockphoto). Actually, this was done for a cover competition for “Advanced Photoshop” magazine and it was a runnerup among 9 other pieces, all featured in a following issue. It was also a cover for the french “Advanced Creation” magazine.

93

Call of Cthulhu: Inspired by H. P. Lovecraft, this is my rendition of the seductive Cthulhu empress. It is also a part of another series I’ve been working on for a few years, called “Transgenetic Metahuman” illustrations of human beings hybridized with either plants, animals or insects, in order to survive on other planets. One could say it’s the next step in evolution.

94

Android Legacy: Is a collaboration with photographer Louis Konstantinou for an exhibition, inspired by the work of Michael Oswald and the movie “TRON: Legacy”. I found the pose of the model Gianna to be perfectly fitting to illustrate some kind of augmented reality in a TRON-colored environment. I’ve always wanted to do some sort of Android / Sexy Robot / Gynoid, so here it is. The title contains a subject to think about, and so does the “googlescreen” she seems to be typing on: the electronic powers that surround us are useful and lead to an advanced lifestyle, but can also make us slaves to technology. This image pretty much shows that we can be as sophisticated and perfect as we want to, but depending on a search engine because we forget so much. Personally, I think the Internet and technology in general are an useful addition to our lives (if we have one) but it’s important NOT to become their slaves!

95

Spell bound III: A tribute to my fellow pin-up buddy Serge Birault and a small birthday present to the “master of tentacles, H. P. Lovecraft. The clothes are inspired by Zatanna.

96

The Gods must to crazy: This is a tribute to and a collaboration with one of my favorite artists, Pascal Blanché. I’m a great fan of his creature designs for a good decade now! He posted some WIPs on Facebook, and with his permission, I based myself on them for this illustration. With the coloring, I do another tribute to a master of 3D illustration, Steven Stahlberg. The inspiration for this piece came from the 80’s movie “The Gods Must Be Crazy” in which a traveling Bushman encounters modern civilization and its stranger aspects. I liked the idea of having a Shaman or an Oracle worshipping modern products as if they were something magical, which is similar to how children perceive our technological environments. This should also make us think about how dull we are thanks to our everyday technology and that we should appreciate our personal and material achievements a little more.

Water Temple: Illustration for my original story in which the elements play an important role. This is the water temple, hidden along a lake in the depths of a forest, a place where the goddess of water can peacefully rest.

100

Finite: Picture or a friend, done for a Secret Santa event. Each person had a specific theme to base themselves on, and mine was “Apocalypse”.

Glace Orange Chocolate Dipped: Is a drawing of my original character Czekolada. Actually, I was going to make real oranges dipped in chocolate but for some reason I couldn’t get to it. In the end, I just drew this. I’m a terrible cook.

Snow Queen: My version of the Snow Queen from the Hans Christian Andersen tale. I wanted to portray her cold cruelty along with her elegant beauty that made innocent people follow her.

101

Mint Flavored: Another portrait of my original character Czekolada, whose name literally means “chocolate. I often draw her with some flavor hints. This one is mint.

102

“I learned different traditional techniques in Art School, but it was when I graduated that I discovered digital illustration”

Mariposa: This illustration only aims to show beauty in a simple and sweet way.

105

106

Magia: I have a passion for fantasy - what will be a wizard or a witch without a crystal ball? Here, I wanted to play with sizes, showing details of a bigger scene in which a witch keeps prisoner a beautiful sleeping creature inside the ball.

Mรกscara: I love masks and the mysteriousness they give to those wearing them. This illustration aims to transport you into a dream state and make you wonder who this beautiful girl is.

El tiempo corre: Again, we sense the mystery of the secret identity behind the mask, but now, we also have a more complex illustration full of details and objects that can bring to our minds questions possibly related to the clock or the little bird locked inside the heart-shaped cage.

Forest corner: This is a painting for one of the locations in the Russian fishing simulation game “Gone Fishing by Drimmi. I focused my attention on creating a good atmosphere, partially magical and partially so native and relaxing. Did I hit the target?

108

-Nick: dartheldarious; -Age: 28 years old; -Country: Uzbekistan; -Studies: Architecture and Construction; -Tools: Photoshop.

109

Maximus: I painted it mostly from my memory, because Max lives in another country, but I also used a few photos as reference.

Beyond the wall: This one was made just for fun. It’s something like a summary of my love for Science Fiction - a few explosions, armors, laser weapons, giant constructions. Ha-ha, everything according to the laws of the genre.

Accepting the tiger: Was created for a corporate calendar in extremely high resolution.

110

111

“There is no great difference between traditional and digital art, but the best way to attain drawing skills is by painting our lives. Only nature can give us this necessary experience

112

Night memories: This was firstly another location for the online game “Gone Fishing” by Drimmi. Then I added the mermaid, who longs for a lost human life which she could’ve saved.

“I try to make a defined sketch so when I need to give it color I don’t need to rectify much or improvise - I like to see things clear since the first moment”

The Death: This is the representation of the classic character of Death that is always present in our lives. For this work I used a chromatic palette less satured that in the majority of my work.

115

The Enchantress: Known as Amora, she is Thor’s antagonist. The main idea for this illustration was to play with the green palette of her suit and the effects on the background, giving everything both a magical and mystical look, at the same time.

Hellboy: This work is very old and was done as an entry for a blog where many artists made their own version of this great character created by Mike Mignola.

“When you start an illustration, don’t worry about finishing it fast, because that way you will only get to lose the creative part” Morrigan vs. Felicia: This illustration portrays an epic fight between two famous characters from Darkstalkers. It’s one of those works that unleashes that freaky side we all carry inside.

“When I was 4, I was already spending several hours a day drawing - there wasn’t a place where I wouldn’t use the possibility to capture and shape my ideas and to express my creativity”

Evocador de los lobos negros: I wanted to reflect an old order of mysterious exiled wizards who live in sinister lands beyond the storms. I put one of those wizards in the middle of the storm, accompanied by his big black wolf, and behind him the moons of the planet. The blue tones of the night and the moonlight work great to give the perfect illumination and to create a sinister image.

119

Las huestes de Mornarth: The hordes of Mornarth are all the servant creatures of the dark lord in the game “Roleage”. The characters and creatures are very colorful, with tons of shading and many differences between them. At the end, I created a few light/dark elements in the scenery and dimmed the illumination with a predominant set of purple and lilac tones.

“The only limit is the amount of dedication you want to give to your works” Templario: I’ve always liked drawing fantasy images, however, this illustration is different because I wanted to portray something more realistic, even historical. I’m also fond of medieval themes, thus why I chose to depict a templar riding his horse on a battlefield.

120

tutorial page 144

121

Ejército Imperial: I created this to display the armor and some of the elements of the Imperial Army from “Roleage”. The armor reflects the fire in both colors and concept due to their importance as characteristics of the game. The sword’s magical flames gave me the perfect reason to play with the illumination of the whole image.

122

Cenarius: I wanted to use Photoshop’s default leaf brushes. I thought about recreating an autumnal scene in a forest, and it didn’t take long for me to decide to add some sort of forest creature in the scene - in this case, a mix between a deer and a centaur.

1 MODELING: I usually start from a plane model, extruding it and giving it shape from the right half of the face and body. At the beginning, I apply the Symmetry modifier and I adjust it. The function of this switch is to “reflect” what we are modeling. It helps a lot to find the right proportions and no to create a monster. I often use references or Modelsheets.

132

GIVING A POSE: To give the model a quick pose, export it to ZBrush as an “.obj” file with the default settings.

2 In ZBrush, I give the model a pose by using masks and the rotation tool, evading the rigging and skinning processes.

3 TAKING OUT THE UVs: We need to import the object back to 3Ds Max and use the “Unwrap” modified which will take out the UVs from the body.

4 133

MODELING THE CLOTHES AND DETAILS: When I have the model with the pose I want, I begin modeling the hair, the clothes and the small details. For the clothes, I use polygons from the same body using an “Edit Poly” modifier over the object, by selecting the polygons, for example, for the jacket and duplicating them. When I finish this part, I once more get the objects’ UVs using “Unwrap”.

5

TEXTURIZING: Before this step, I do several color tests using “Standard” materials. This allows me to have an idea of how the tonalities and the final result will look like.

6 134

7 For texturization, the first thing I do is to get the UVs’ template from the object I want to texturize, from inside the “Unwrap” modifier’s options. Then I take the UV map to Photoshop and paint over the textures and details I need. To take out the maps I use a tool called PixPlant.

135

ILLUMINATION: I put some “Target Spot” lights on the scene and some OMNI support lights. I test them until I get the desired effect.

8 MATERIALS: With the lights correctly placed, I can finally create materials which will work well for the scene. I select a VRAYMtl, in which I will put “Diffuse”, “Normal” and “Specular” maps. Then, I adjust the values of “Reflection” and “Glossiness” until I get the desired reflection in each material.

136

9 RENDER: Before rendering, we need to configure the parameters on the “Render Setup” window to choose if we want a higher quality/resolution image or not, by adjusting the values of “Image Sampling” (anti-aliasing) and “Irradiance Map” (rebounds of the light). Then we set up the Ambient Occlusion, which can be found within the “Render Elements” tab.

1

POST-PRODUCTION: Open the rendered image in Photoshop, then put the AO pass on top with “Multiply as blending mode. Now you can adjust the levels, saturation and add the last details to the image.

DIGITAL ART TUTORIAL: “Waterfall Temple Roberto Nieto I begin with a neutral base color which will give me clues for adding others that can combine well with it. I use a brush with some texture which responds to pen pressure in order to achieve different tones. In this first step, we will simply aim to fill the screen, but without leaving it as a flat color.

1

Using dark brown and the same brush, I fill the bottom part by applying more pressure to the pen, in order to achieve darker, more intense tones. As I go up, I decrease the pressure and paint with lighter tones. I fill the upper part with saturated yellow (but not too much), since it will contain the light source. As the bottom colors mix with the top ones, they become a gradient of forms which will help us give depth to the scenery and guess the shape of the mountains.

2

140

I finish defining the forms and I generate the first points of light, always having the main source in mind - in this case, the top of the waterfalls.

3

I give more contrast to the points of light and continue defining the main shapes.

4

I add the bridge and more details to the extremities of the landscape. Then I create a small river and a waterfall going down the mountains on the left, to give some more life to that area. We must take into account the highlighted and shadowed areas. Where the light impinges, the water shines more, and for that reason I use a purer white, while in the darker areas it will hardly be visible.

5

141

I give some more life to the image by adding an eastern temple atop the mountain. The detailing of the mountains and smaller details continues.

6

To give to the image more atmosphere and depth, add a bit of mist in the mountains. With a very fuzzy brush and lowering the opacity to less than a half, I added this mist until achieve the right level of haze.

7

In the final step, I add a few birds, since they always give so much life and depth to larger landscapes - they can always brighten up an illustration. In this case, I added them in different sizes. I also included a few small characters along the path on the right, as a touch of mystery. Drawing this picture took me about 10 hours spread over several days.

1 Sketch the first lines of your drawing. The layer must be at 25% opacity and the brush has to be in “Multiply” mode - this way you will intensify the strokes you redraw. We will do this in separate layers so that we can later modify the image.

2 Create a new layer and fill it with a blue color, then set it to “Multiply” to obtain a base layer in order to start working.

144

Make another layer to begin working with the colors. Try to use a brush with 5-10% opacity, as we will start enhancing the illumination we need.

3

4 Now we can get to creating the illumination - for this we need another layer and the brush both in “Multiply” mode. We begin by drawing the shadowed areas slowly and bit by bit, so the left out parts will serve as our lighter areas.

5 To continue working with the colors, we will create another layer set to “Normal” and with a low opacity brush we will give colors to the whole drawing. For this, we shall alternate the brush between the “Normal” and “Multiply” blending modes in order to give better shadows or highlights to the scene.

145

Keep going with the coloring and start adding some depth and details using layers in “Overlay”, “Screen” or “Normal”.

6

Now we can also add some details to the background using a brown/ocher palette to simulate the atmosphere of the battle scene.

7

8

146

As a penultimate step, we will delimit the illuminated areas using bright colors to differentiate the main character from the background. Then we can add a few gradient layers to unify the illustration.

9

Finally, we merge all the layers into one and duplicate it. In the duplicated layer, add a “Motion Blur” filter. Then, erase the knight figure as to only leave the background with this effect, making the final image look more alive.
