Fighting Hate with Love by Rabbi Jonathan Aaron

The last six months have been filled with human tragedy after human tragedy. When natural disasters occur, we react with sympathy and empathy and caring.

When murder and terror occur we are struck with two sides of our emotional repertoire: compassion and anger. Our hearts go out to all the families who were affected by the attacks on religious communities in the midst of prayer. From Pittsburgh to Christchurch to Sri Lanka to San Diego, hate took the lives of peaceful, prayerful communities, and shook us all down to our core. Anger wells up and fills us with an uneasy energy, with

furrowed brows and short fuses. At these times, I use verses from our tradition to help ground me. The first is “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18), the second is, “they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: Nation shall not take up sword against nation; they shall never again know war.” (Isaiah 2:4). The first is my own spiritual quest, and the effect I have on the people with whom I interact: to treat everyone that I meet with love and compassion, with kindness and embrace. If I am able to accomplish that, then I am spreading the energy of goodness to those around me, and contributing towards peace and love between people. The second is our hope and task—to live in a world without bloodshed and war. And to live in a world without articles of war in our streets, without citizens who are filled with hate being able to purchase and use weapons of destruction in our houses of worship, or any public place. Join our fight against gun violence—to beat swords into plowshares, and join our mission to bring love and kindness towards our neighbor. Together, through love and work, can we help to make this world a better, more safe place to live.

...To live in a world without articles of war in our streets...

Dayenu—Enough is Enough! In Response to the Gun Violence Epidemic by Sue Brucker You’ve heard the names: Sandy Hook Elementary; Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School; The Tree of Life Synagogue; Poway Chabad Center; and most recently, Highlands Ranch STEM School. The tragic and unique bond that these institutions share is gun violence and being a victim of a mass shooting. According to the Gun Violence Archive, to date in 2019, there have already been 18,604 gun violence incidents and 117 mass shootings (defined as indiscriminate rampages in public places with four or more victims) in the United States. It seems like gun violence and mass shootings have become so commonplace that our society has become desensitized to the gravity of this terrible epidemic. Turning a blind eye and allowing our elected officials to bury their heads in the sand will not make this tragic issue go away. It should be deeply troubling to know that across our nation, our school children

now have to contend with “active shooter” drills as part of their education day. Support of victim’s families through “thoughts and prayers” is not enough. We must take action to ensure change will happen. That is why Temple Emanuel created TEBH Safe, a gun violence prevention task force. This group formed in the aftermath of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. When the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue shooting occurred that is when our congregants said dayenu—enough is enough! We are an active committee whose goal is to raise awareness and take action. We have created partnerships with organizations on a local and national level to help effect change in California and nationally to stop this insidious infection of gun violence.

We have the support of several dedicated congregants, one of whom is Andrea Grossman of Writers Bloc Presents. Writers Bloc partnered with Temple Emanuel and offered two public service programs regarding the gun violence epidemic featuring Congressmen Ted Lieu and Adam Schiff respectively. And we have more of these events lined up. Mark Kelly (astronaut, gun violence prevention activist and husband to former Arizona Senator Gabby Giffords) will be speaking with us in the fall. TEBH Safe is also partnered with the Jewish Center for Justice and the URJ’s Religious Action Center, the latter of which hosted a Legislative Call-In week that Temple Emanuel participated in. We joined a coalition of statewide synagogues calling on Governor Newsom to increase gun violence prevention program funding. These programs have been shown to reduce gun violence by as much as 40%, so we continue to push forward. We need your help to ensure gun violence is once and for all controlled. Please join us. Get involved at tebh.org/SocialJustice and help make a difference. As Margaret Meade said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Michele Seipp It's been wonderful to experience the adult B'nai Mitzvah's academic, spiritual, philosophical, and deeply meaningful journey that embraces our heritage, traditions, and generational wisdom. L'dor Vador! Suzanne Rosencrans I embarked on my Adult B’nai Mitzvah experience to learn Hebrew and traditional prayers, but also to connect with Temple Emanuel and the larger Jewish community. I’m pleased to say that I’ve met these goals…and had a fun time with my classmates in doing so! Thank you, Lizzie! Katie Piel The B'nai Mitzvah journey has been an enriching experience of Jewish learning. As I began to read Hebrew and connect to the text in a focused way, I found a deeper connection to Judaism and a stronger sense of purpose in my faith. Bob Stein My two years in the Bar Mitzvah class had many benefits but most of all I learned to read Hebrew reasonably well, I read Torah and finally, after all these years I came to understand the order of the Shabbat service and the meaning of the prayers. Carmelita Bouie This experience has been a meaningful Jewish adventure that has brought me closer to others and mostly importantly to the Torah! I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to complete this journey and gain more wisdom and growth for use within community, and to be counted officially among the Jewish people. Thanks Lizzie.

A Message from Outgoing President Barry Brucker It is hard to believe that my term as president of Temple Emanuel has come to an end. Ensuring Temple Emanuel’s success weighed heavily in my thoughts and was the source of quite a few sleepless nights this past year. Temple Emanuel, like many synagogues, was not immune to the downturn in full paying membership with congregants wrestling with choices of how and where to spend their disposable income. However, the way in which our temple lay and professional leadership responded to our congregational family is an example of what I have found to be most rewarding. For me, knowing the impact Temple Emanuel has had in our members’ lives, AND the spiritual connections that have been made through our unique community, is what makes me so proud. Additionally, I cannot help but reflect on how blessed and fortunate I have been to work with a dedicated team of phenomenal people: our clergy, staff, board of directors, lay leaders, and many active members who collectively represent Team Emanuel. The collective energy of the team has allowed our synagogue to thrive, function, and embrace “Living Judaism.” It is they who helped facilitate turning so many shared goals and ideas into realities. When I began my term three years ago as your president, enhanced communication and collaborative decision making were important goals of mine, along with everyone else on Team Emanuel. Balancing our needs with our budgetary constraints is not an easy task—especially during some unexpected challenges. It was our dynamic clergy in concert with our board of directors and executive director who took on this challenging task. They were especially mindful to look outside the box and make difficult yet bold decisions to shape and reimagine what TEBH can and should look like over the next 50 years. Even with its challenges, I am confident we will be a shining example of building tomorrow's Judaism today! Your clergy, staff, and board of directors made a conscious decision to create a vibrant community where people felt connected. Be it unique and inspiring worship opportunities, social advocacy

involvement, inspiring classes, our Saturday morning minyan, a Mamma Mia themed Shabbat service, or a wine and cheese reception, these are just a sampling of our diverse and inclusive community programming. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” It is to this end that we have made the bold yet fiscally prudent decision to monetize the Burton Way school building, which has been virtually empty for over a year. This decision will allow us to pay off our long-term debt and reimagine a new and improved multipurpose facility on Clark Drive. We want to deliver our style of Judaism to a broader range of worshippers, all while adapting to the more fluid ways Jews pray and embrace their community. There are so many people to thank and I would be remiss if I didn’t start with my wife Sue. Sue has been a wealth of advice, encouragement, and wisdom as well as my inspiration. To our clergy: Rabbi Aaron, Rabbi Bassin, Cantor Weiss, Rabbi Lutz, and of course our always inspiring Rabbi Laura Geller—thank you from the bottom of my heart. Huge gratitude goes to our former Executive Director Ellis Kirschenbaum and our new Executive Director Matt Davidson along with their outstanding staff for keeping our engine running with efficiency and professionalism. Without a doubt I am thankful to have served with the finest temple board any president can dream of. This board has spent an enormous amount of time planning, chairing committees, and ultimately making difficult policy decisions to ensure Temple Emanuel remains the vibrant, fiscally accountable, and caring community we have become. For that, I am grateful! I am also very grateful to our members, who make up the diverse tapestry of committed Jews wishing to celebrate their faith their way and without judgment. This world could learn by example at how Temple Emanuel’s diversity has become our strength. It is you, our congregational family, who have helped transform Emanuel into a kind and socially responsible community. It has been a privilege to be your president these past three-plus years. This experience has left a handprint on my heart and enriched my life in so many ways. I know I will look back at this time with much affection because of so many cherished memories that stirred my soul, rejuvenated my spirit, and left me feeling a deep sense of warmth and compassion from a community that truly cares! Thank you very much!! Temple Topics
