HANUKKAH in context

Last month, on the

first Shabbat after the murders in Pittsburgh, our sanctuary was packed full of people in search of the peace Shabbat brings. There were Jewish people and non-Jewish people, there were congregants and the unaffiliated. All the people in the room were there to nourish their souls and to make a statement about our freedom to practice Judaism. Indeed, religious freedom was one of the pillars upon which this country was built. In 1785, James Madison wrote, "The Religion then of every man must be left to the conviction and conscience of every man: and it is the right of every man to exercise it as these may dictate." One gunman’s deed will not intimidate us, nor keep us from exercising our right to be a Jew in America. Being together on that Shabbat was an evening of Jewish pride. No holiday is more about pride in being Jewish than Hanukkah. Showing pride and publicly observing the holiday is one of the most important aspects of the celebration.

By Rabbi Jonathan Aaron

Maimonides, the great Jewish scholar of the Middle Ages, wrote that Hanukkah “…should be commemorated to be days of happiness and praise [of God]. Candles should be lit in the evening at the entrance to the houses on each and every one of these eight nights to publicize and reveal the miracle.” The original custom called for the candles to be seen from the street, so that any passerby would know that the occupants of the house are celebrating Hanukkah. This year, especially, let us celebrate the fight to freely express our Judaism, a fight that began over two thousand years ago. We are free to be Jews in this country, but the event in Pittsburgh reminded us that our “fight” is living Judaism. As long as we continue to gather together and perform our culture’s rituals and customs, we will survive, despite those who wish otherwise. We hope you have a healthy and happy holiday. Happy Hanukkah from the clergy team and everyone at Temple Emanuel.

ChaiVillageLA Gives Back The members of ChaiVillageLA are no strangers to giving back to the community. Throughout our many members’ distinguished careers, they have worked and volunteered at nonprofits, helping to make the world a better place. So, it stands to reason that they would want to work together as Village members to make their efforts even more significant. ChaiVillageLA member Barbara MaromPollack, along with a group of other members, decided to support 826LA, a local organization that helps students ages 6 through 18 with their writing skills. As Barbara explained, “826LA believes that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success and they have created programs that help students with their writing.” ChaiVillageLA members are focusing their volunteer efforts on the Field Trips program, in which LAUSD classes visit 826LA where

they write and edit compositions. Student leave with something tangible—a bound book and a renewed sense of confidence in their reading and writing. As the mid-term elections neared, ChaiVillageLA member Idelle Davidson wanted to help others register to vote. She contacted the League of Women Voters who provided a training for ChaiVillagers. Members of our Village have been staffing voter registration tables in numerous sites around town. Idelle remarked, “Members of the community are incredibly engaged right now about voting in national, state and local elections, and on issues that really matter.” ChaiVillageLA is a program of Temple Emanuel and Temple Isaiah. We are a virtual community, led by adults who share their optimism, skills, support and expertise with each another to joyfully navigate the next steps in our lives. To learn more, contact us at 310592-0321 or Devorah@ ChaiVillageLA.org.

What We're Reading

Why I Do YoPro

By Danielle Soto

If you had told me when I left Boston in 2014 that

a major element of my Los Angeles life would be a Temple, I would have asked, “What is this mishegas?” I couldn’t imagine finding a synagogue that would consistently keep me inspired, engaged, and entertained. My love for Temple Emanuel pumps from the heart which is YoPro. YoPro, our group for members in their 20s and 30s, was founded by Jennifer Stempel. Her vision was to create a welcoming (both emotionally and financially) pocket of Temple Emanuel for young adults to connect with other Jews, as well as their own Judaism.

The reason YoPro keeps me coming back is because it gives me an opportunity to flex all my favorite muscles. As a performer and writer, YoPro gave me a space to produce and host comedy shows and trivia nights. As a social extrovert, YoPro assigned me the role of “Membership” which put me in the position to invite new members out for coffee and really get to know them one on one. And as a transplant, YoPro introduced me to some of my best friends bordering on chosen family. YoPro is for anyone in their 20s or 30s who identifies as Jewish, and honors the same values that we do. Whether you went to Jewish camp every year, or barely know the words to “Dreidle Dreidle,” there is a place for you in YoPro. We accept people of all genders, races, nationalities, and sexual orientations. YoPro will make sure you’re never without a Shabbat service, a seder table, or a place to feel like death after breaking the Yom Kippur fast. (Just me?? Eats til they die??) Come check out what we’re all about because YoPro is here to support you and show you a Jewtastic good time. Visit tebh.org/YoPro.

Interesting Finds on Living Judaism through Great Books

The Hard Break: The Case for the 24/6 Lifestyle by Aaron Edelheit outlines a practical, easy to understand need to disconnect from a world of constant connectivity. Without being preachy Mr. Edelheit outlines the dangers of overworking one self and gently offers the numerous benefits of a digital and physical break from work with an old, but time-tested solution to burnout: celebrating Shabbat. The beauty of this book lies in how simply the author shares his personal story and that of other well-known politicians, entrepreneurs, and celebrities. If you’ve ever wondered how taking a oneday break (at any point during the week) can benefit your life, read this book. The Hard Break is Living Judaism at its finest—accessible, relatable, and meaningful. I really enjoyed this book! – Alex Kojfman, Director of Communications and Membership. Temple Topics
