State University, he quickly moved back for a life in the mountains. After moving to Telluride from Aspen in 1996 he realized that he had found his home. Eric loves to help people discover the “mountain lifestyle” and magic of Telluride. He brings a high level of professionalism and integrity to each transaction; allowing you to relax and enjoy the buying/selling process. He has been involved in over $100 million in real estate transactions and has guided clients through large scale and single-family developments, condo, commercial and land purchases. Eric actively volunteers his time as a big brother in the One to One program; is a current board member of The Just for Kids Foundation; and a former 4 year member of San Miguel Search and Rescue. He has also recently served as the President of the Telluride Association of Realtors and was voted Realtor of the Year in 2009 by his peers.

Eric's hobbies include skiing, mountain/road biking, scuba diving, sailing, travelling and reading. He is married to Alyssa (the best yoga teacher in town) and they have a spirited 3 year old son named Dylan with another one on the way.

Allison Templ in

Allison Templin hails from Hickory, North Carolina and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Although she’s a Tar Heel at heart, it was her love of the San Juan Mountains that inspired her to make Telluride her home sixteen years ago. In 2002 she embarked on her real estate career with Telluride Properties, bringing her warm southern hospitality to the region’s premiere real estate company. Allison is known amongst her clients and peers as someone who takes the time to listen and provide the best quality service with the utmost professionalism. Her southern upbringing taught her what she lends to her real estate career today, she’s hospitable, patient and conscientious in her work. Allison’s clients have nothing but the best to say about working with her. “From the beginning we knew we had a match with Allison as our agent, she was very professional and most importantly respectful of our timeline. She knew her property listings, listened to our wants. It was the easiest closing we have had. Not only is she our agent, we also consider her our friend.”

Allison married Telluride native Matt Templin and together they are raising daughter Cate Grace surrounded by family and the mountains they love. They are expecting their second child in September, 2012. When she’s not in her office on Oak Street at the base of the Gondola Allison can be found hiking Telluride’s extensive trail system or enjoying an afternoon at Town Park with her daughter.

Aric Maloy

Aric grew up skiing the icy slopes of Buffalo, NY. Following years of skiing the Rockies on vacation, he finally realized his dream of living in a ski town when he moved to Telluride in 1999. Since joining Telluride Properties, Aric has been a consistent producer and a knowledgeable real estate asset to his clients and fellow brokers. "I specialize in finding my clients the best value in the region that fits their budget, lifestyle and desires." Aric is also very passionate about volunteering his time to a cause very close to his heart, the Telluride Adaptive Ski Program. TASP is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities. Aric finds his student's resolve to learn how to ski despite their permanent disabilities most inspiring - and a truly rewarding experience.

Aric loves to take advantage of the region's ample recreation opportunities. You can catch him ripping down the mountain on any given powder day with a huge grin plastered across his face, or exploring one of Telluride's many trails with his mountain bike and yellow lab Cass (named after his hometown of Cassadaga, NY). The remote and rugged settings of southwest Colorado and southern Utah are also home to one of Aric's favorite pastimes, canyoneering. The photos to the left are of Aric in action at Zion National Park, Utah.

Wilkinson Public Library

No institution more "Tr u ly T el lur ide" by Susan Viebrock of Telluride Inside... and Out

The Wilkinson Public Library is a whole that is great because of the sum of its parts, one of which is the buzzing Children's Area. In 2006, the children’s area was completely redesigned with young people in mind, from its low face-front shelving and bins to the colorful displays that line the entryway. Notable features include the hand-carved storyteller’s chair, the “Tell Me a Story Mural," Sid’s Book Nook, a child-sized house, complete with kitchen, and an original Todd Parr painting. Its own very special collection is outstanding, containing over 14,000 items: books, DVD’s, audiobooks, MP3 players, activity and science packs, and magazines. (There are no fines on kid’s materials. Guests are encouraged to take home as many items as they like.) The children's section of the WPL now averages 40-50 programs per month, entertaining and educating over 12,000 children – and adults – per year. One departmental goal is to reach every child before he or she attends kindergarten. To that end, library representatives visit all of the region's preschools once or twice each month so that every child can experience a story time before he or she heads off to school. The children's area regularly provides five weekly story times at the library, plus after-school programs in science, music, and art. There are author visits, movement story times, and parent education programs.

Libraries across the country are in a period of reinvention, with Telluride's Wilkinson Public Library, way ahead of the curve. Telluride's five-star library is what Telluride itself is all about: small in size only. Big WOW! factor. According to dynamic Library Director Barb Brattin, the numbers tell just a fraction of the story, but a compelling story nevertheless: "Were you to describe our library in terms of numbers alone, you would get just 1/10th of the picture," Barb explains. "Our use per capita ranked us the busiest library in Colorado in 2010." (The state is just now collecting 2011 data.) In the budget category of $1 – 5 million, Telluride's library is the busiest in the nation for computer use and the 7th highest in the country for program attendance per capita: "We serve twice as many people as the population in our district and we check out 300,000 items to 11,000 cardholders each year, 5X as much as an average library, Barb continues. "Library Journal has awarded us five stars, its highest ranking, four years in a row." But the real success of the Wilkinson Public Library lies in the way the institution builds community: "Ask anyone in town and they will describe the library as the 'heart' of Telluride,' a true community center," Barb adds. "Our new service plan is entitled 'Building Common Ground,' something we do every day. We are focused on developing 21st-century learning skills, challenging the community through civic engagement, fostering civility, and inspiring individual discovery in a compassionate, inviting, comfortable environment. Our mission boils down to four words: Challenge, Inspire, Engage, Transform."

Each year the children's area hosts an array of special programs designed to delight people of all ages. They include: The Telluride Farmer’s Market Performance Series, Young People’s Literature Celebration, Dia de Los Niño’s, and Holiday Pajamarama. Elizabeth Tracy, the Youth Services Manager, runs the children's section: "Our children’s area is a unique learning center environment complete with materials, toys, computers, and didactics. The community loves us not only for our warmth, but also for the lively exuberance that makes us distinctly Telluride. When you visit us, you may wind up asking yourself, 'Is this really a library?' Well, I suggest you think of us more as a window on the future:

evenings after the library has closed, which gives teens the chance to experience the institution in a new and fun way. Teen Services staff also actively encourages its patrons to design their own programs and over the past couple years have hosted a number of noteworthy teen-run activities. Currently, a local teen runs a weekly creative writing club, while another is in charge of a weekly video game club. The library also has a Teen Advisory Board which provides input on ways how better to serve them better. Oh, and the video collection, housed in the teen department, gets a lot of attention from patrons young and old and contains a wide variety of games for XBox, Wii, Nintendo DS, and Playstation 3. Scott Doser, program coordinator of Adult Programming, asks a provocative question: "In what creative ways does adult programming at the library influence home buyers to choose Telluride? The short answer is WPL programs offer new-comers an opportunity to meet the community and stay connected: there's loads of energy from the kiddos, (supplemented by a snack table), and very little shh’ing. That all adds up to a developmentally friendly place designed to accommodate the needs of Telluride’s children and families." Patrons gush: “Telluride also has an amazing library, including the best children’s library I have ever seen, with so many activities and reading nooks. The library has fabulous adult areas too. We spent lots of time at the library,” said Heidi Ahrens.

"WPL adult programs offer and encourage opportunities to socialize," Scott says. "Most evenings begin with a reception where we break bread to create an atmosphere that encourages mixing and mingling." And the programming itself is among the most diverse, vibrant, and prolific in the country:

"Every month, the WPL offers multiple opportunities for adults to meet and enjoy films, lectures, workshops, literature, music, poetry, theater, and lively civil discourse on a variety of local, regional, national, and international topics. We embrace the “Having two preschoolers, we are particularly fond of youth opportunity to explore social and political issues, the services. Anna and Sami Ramponi. AND “The children’s area of the WPL has become the place for children and parents to build community and make literacy a natural part of their lives," concluded Kristin Redd. Moving chronologically through sections and stacks, Teen Services, run by Elissa Dickson, is at the forefront of library programming for young adults. Its collection boasts all of the latest in teen fiction with fresh titles coming in each month and an emphasis on popular genres such as dystopian sci-fi and Steampunk. Because of the close relationships the staff has built with its patrons, everyone has a nuanced understanding of local teens' passions and interests. That understanding informs the programming, which seeks to introduce this quirky and demanding population to new skills and literacies. Current after-school programs include a Monday Cooking Club, Tuesday Clown Theatre Class, Thursday Director’s Club (documentary filmmaking), and Friday Hip Hop Dance Class, among many other targeted initiatives. These programs have all run for multiple months offering teen patrons sustained exposure to new disciplines. The upcoming “Your Summer” program allows teens to set all kinds of goals for their summer season, and not just reading goals. These new initiatives are a great way for teen visitors to get involved at the library. And they can participate online from anywhere. Teens are encouraged to sign up even if they plan to spend only one week in the region. After Hours events have proven to be another big hit with the teen community. As the name suggests, they take place in the

Sarah Laneryou, the library's Public Services Manager, concludes: "The Wilkinson Public Library, with its services, programs, collections and staff, is a perfect match for the stunning scenery and unique qualities of the region it serves. Come be delighted when finding a new book, magazine, or movie, making a new connection, attending a program or a workshop, or just plain getting some work done. You'll see why so many visitors remark about the fact they wish their library at home was as nice as the library in Telluride." Nice, world class, and unique. "Par" means turning Mountain Village (and the Telluride region in general) into a culinary destination, as well as one of the greatest places on earth to rip and shred. Telski is the first to acknowledge the importance of Hotel Madeline. Until the hotel was completed about four years ago, much like the Tinman in "The Wizard of Oz," there was a hole where a heart should be. Under the new General Manager Jim Mikula, Madeline's plans for improvement are ambitious, though it is still too early under his management to describe the particulars in detail. What can be said is that they include working with Telski, TMVOA, and the Town of Mountain Village to continually buff up public spaces such a Reflection Plaza, which runs from the hotel's entrance all the way to Heritage Plaza. Madeline's BAR M, which spills out onto the plaza, adds to the list of great places to meet and eat year-round. The hotel's higher end "M's," is designed for long-glance looks over leisurely romantic dinners. (It is also open for breakfast.) The thread that unites both restaurants is excellent farm-to-table cuisine and constantly changing menus designed to incorporate the freshest ingredients available. In addition to heli-skiing and golf, The Peaks is also the heart of the tennis program in Mountain Village, offering "camps" throughout the summer season. (The five courts are also open to the general public on a first-come, first-served – no pun intended– basis when not in use by club members.) Summer in the Telluride region is defined by weekly festivals, bookended by Mountainfilm in Telluride (Memorial weekend) and the Telluride Film Festival ( Labor Day weekend). Sandwiched between the two is everything from all kinds of music to wine, with Mountain Village playing host to a number of related events, including the Telluride Bluegrass Festival's FirstGrass Concert and the Sunset Blues & Brews Concert. Festivals that take place "downtown" in the box canyon tend to concentrate their activities over long weekends. Mid-week the action shifts "uptown" to Mountain Village, where every summer Wednesday night, 6 p.m. rain or shine, TMVOA presents its Summer Sunset Concert Series. Entering its 13th year, the popular program draws on average 1,500 – 2,000 music lovers to the grassy slope known as Sunset Plaza at the top of the Chondola (Lift 1), where crowds gather to enjoy the opportunity to catch up with one another as much as revel in the sounds.

Co-produced by TMVOA and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, the Telluride Festival of the Arts takes place mid-August. The highlight of the event is the Grand Tasting, a culinary and social celebration, plus a nationally juried art show showcasing artists working in various mediums, everything from painting and sculpture to ceramics and jewelry. All of the above activities – dining, retail, sports, concerts, festivals – take place in a verdant context that is also very green: Mountain Village and Telski are proud to wave their sustainable flags on high. Telluride is one of only seven resorts in the country to have joined the National Ski Areas Association's sustainability initiatives, including reducing power and fuel consumption through best practices.

"We have set goals for reduction and plan to implement them all and continually measure results," said Riley. In 2008, Mountain Village adopted a resolution to establish the goal of zero waste (or darn close) for the community by the year 2025. Its Green Gondola Project is designed to operate the gondola, the link between the towns of Telluride and Mountain Village, by obtaining a larger percentage of its electricity from efficient and renewable sources. Mountain Village: a great place for an adrenaline rush or where to underachieve in hedonistic bliss. Either way, the town that has historically played second fiddle to Telluride, now clearly has a claim on the spotlight too. Joanie Schwarz and Don Rosenthal by Susan Viebrock of Telluride Inside... and Out

THREE. LOOK IT UP. THE NUMBER IS ASSOCIATED WITH GOOD FORTUNE, HARMONY, WISDOM, AND UNDERSTANDING. THREE IS THE NUMBER OF MAGIC TOO: HEROES AND HEROINES OF FAIRY TALES ARE OFTEN OFFERED THREE CHOICES OR TESTS AND OVERCOME DIFFICULTIES ON THE THIRD TRY. THIS IS THE STORY OF THREE FRIENDS WHO TOGETHER HAVE EXPERIENCED ALL OF THE ABOVE: GOOD FORTUNE, HARMONY, WISDOM, UNDERSTANDING – AND MAGIC. THEY ARE SPECIAL PEOPLE WHO WHOLEHEARTEDLY EMBRACE THEIR PRESENT, BUT ALSO SHARE A PAST THAT BEGAN DECADES AGO BACK IN WILKES BARRE, PA, AND IS STILL UNFOLDING.

Don Rosenthal and Joanie Schwarz live in Westfield, New Jersey, one of a number of towns in the Garden State that serve as bedroom communities to New York. It's a picture postcard of an address with tree-lined streets, good schools, the requisite Starbucks and a downtown that was once a sleepy village, first settled in 1720. That's exactly 168 years before the Town of Telluride, originally named Columbia, was founded. We are talking some serious historical bona fides. "We love Westfield, says Joanie. "Our family is close by and we have a wonderful community of friends. However, I often catch Donnie walking out the front door, mumbling loud enough for me to hear: “Where are the mountains? '" Don and Joanie are avid skiers. You need mountains to ski. The bigger, the bolder, the better. Asked where they come from today, the couple has a stock answer: “Westfield and Telluride. Telluride is our spiritual home.” "From our very first visit, I thought Telluride had to be the prettiest place on the planet," said Don. "Even more important, there appears to be a real sense of gratitude around town: locals don’t ever seem to take their amazing surroundings for granted. Like us, they stand in awe at everything they see around them."

very good friend when she first met him in the third grade back in their hometown of Wilkes-Barre, PA. "Albert exuded joy. Way before we knew anything about the teachings of yoga or Buddhism and the idea of cultivating personal contentment for the sake of oneself and others, Albert intuitively understood those ideas. He has always had a positive attitude." Don met Albert their very first day at Skidmore College, where they lucked into a freshman course called – no joke – American Teaching Methods in Skiing. Then they taught together at Gore Mountain in upstate New York. "For the last 30 years, some of the most fun I’ve had skiing has been just following Albert down a mountain," explained Don. "After 20 years in Telluride, Al knows just about every line. There is nothing better than staying with him through the trees. And now our two boys enjoy doing the same thing, flying through Log Pile or Mak-M trees, whooping at the top of their lungs behind Albert." Off the slopes, performing their day jobs, Don Rosenthal and Joanie Schwarz are equally but differently talented. Don's father and brother Mark are both doctors. (Mark Rosenthal, a cardiologist, is affiliated with the Telluride Medical Center.) Don's dad always said his son had the bedside manner to follow in the family tradition. Instead Don leads a Wealth Management Team at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Short Hills, New Jersey.

"Ironically in the tough economic environment of the past 10 years, my alleged bedside manner has not gone to waste," "I love the yoga community in Telluride. My favorite place to explained Don. "People come to us for help with managing their practice is the Telluride Yoga Center. I love the fact that you investments, but where we earn our keep is by helping our rarely see a fur coat. There are no stop lights. There is no need clients stay focused on the big picture and helping them stay on to dress up," declared Joanie. "I also love the fact that once we plan during what can be some crazy highs and lows. It’s park our car, we don’t have to get in it again until we (reluctantly) important to know how to structure a portfolio, but the joy from leave. The town is not about excess. Telluride has everything my work comes from the relationships I develop with my clients anyone could ever need, but no more. Except an Indian and when I see them achieve their goals.” restaurant. We would love to see an Indian restaurant in town!" When Don and Joanie first visited Telluride in the mid-1990s, skiing was no doubt top of mind, but the aforementioned Albert was the real draw: Don, Joanie and Albert form a trinity. Albert is Albert Roer, the man with the mile-wide smile permanently tattooed across his face. Ask anyone fortunate enough to know him: that broad, toothy curve seems to set the whole world straight. Albert is a managing partner of Telluride Properties. He is also co-owner, with Kristin Taylor, of the Telluride Yoga Center and an avid practitioner. Albert seems to embody what the yoga tradition is all about, ananda, happiness. And that's the vibe – which permeates the company he runs , infecting all the brokers – Joanie Schwarz picked up on from her

As different as they appear to be on the surface, Don's and Joanie's careers are united by a common thread: a focus on people and a desire to bring out the best from their relationships. Joanie Schwarz is an artist, the right brain to Don's left-brainedness. Joanie attended Syracuse University, where she majored in illustration and photography. After graduating in 1986, she made a living as a freelance illustrator creating book covers for companies such as Scholastic, Penguin and Dutton. She has also had three of her own illustrated children's books published. Throughout her long and successful career, friends dogged

Joanie, asking if she would photograph their families in her spare time. After 20 years meeting the demands of art directors, she realized it might be refreshing to create her own art for people with whom she had a real connection. "Being an independent portrait photographer is very different from working for art directors of magazines and books. I wanted to take pictures of real children for real reasons, document their lives. I wanted to make artful images families would cherish for generations." Back home among her regular clients in New Jersey, Joanie is not just Joanie. She is "Oh My God Joanie," the usual exclamation she hears once they receive their prints. (OMG Joanie is now a family joke.)

Don sums up: “Not only does Joanie have an eye for beauty, during long photo sessions, she also captures the warmth family members feel for one another. And I have to say my wife is the hardest working person I know. She won't quit until she has captured the exact image she’s looking for.” Though Don and Joanie kept returning to Telluride year after year, Albert never encouraged his friends to buy. Au contraire. He suggested the family was fine staying with him (or with brother Mark). The comfortable space in the Telluride Properties Oak Street office became a frequent resting spot. One day, while hanging out, Albert told his friends about a short sale around the corner. He suggested they check it out, but cautioned short sales are generally hassles. When they walked in, they both let Albert know, hassles aside…“this is the place.”

How good is Joanie Schwarz really? Every image I saw bore the It's a long story, but one with a happy ending: the light-filled imprint of what I believe to be her true nature: penetrating smart, triplex at 232 Pacific Street is now the Rosenthal's second empathic, focused. Joanie seeks and finds magic – her goal – address. with every being she captures in her lens: mostly babies, moms, and dogs. "Now that we have our own place, it is so fun to arrive with little more than what’s in our backpacks," explained Don. "It's so Does OMG Joanie work in Telluride? relaxing to be able to make it through a visit with my ski clothes, Do bears trash our trash cans every summer? a few t-shirts, and a pair of jeans. No one notices I am wearing the same thing over and over. And no one would care if they "I love working in town. The light here is phenomenal. I enjoy the did." people because they so clearly enjoy their lives, especially their lives outdoors. No matter who and no matter where I take "Our kids really love it here," added Joanie. "Within minutes after photographs, what I enjoy most is interacting with my subjects arriving, Dean, our 14-year-old, is out the door walking to the and the challenge of bringing out the love they have for one nearby skateboard park or to Gravity Works to climb." another through my work." Life doesn't get better than that. (Visit Joanie Schwarz’s website/Facebook page to see for yourself just how well she succeeds joanieschwarzphotography. O

ne of the most unique and exciting aspects of life in Telluride is one that may initially be overlooked given the immediate gratification Telluride offers to those first held in its thrall. This less obvious, yet equally compelling component to Telluride life and a major reason why locals and second homeowners alike choose to live here, is Telluride’s BIG backyard! The mountain hamlets and desert communities surrounding Telluride, joined together via canyons, rivers and roads, offer year-round enjoyment, stunning in its diversity and unparalleled panoramic magnificence. Let us begin in Telluride’s immediate vicinity. As scenic vistas go, a drive through the San Miguel River Canyon and alongside the breathtaking Sneffels Mountain Range, is unsurpassed in its physical beauty. This scenic traverse takes one through Ridgway and lands you in Ouray, the Switzerland of America. Ouray, a hamlet surrounded by towering cliffs, is home to the world’s premier ice climbing event, the Ouray Ice Festival, as well as incredible natural hot springs and world class four wheeling. Continuing south along the Million Dollar Highway, up and over Red Mountain pass, leads you to the town of Silverton. This sleepy mountain town comes alive in winter as home of Silverton Ski Mountain, featuring one chairlift that takes you into the highest and steepest ski terrain in North America - entirely for the advanced and expert skier. There is gold medal trout fishing and whitewater rafting to be had on the Gunnison River that flows through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, a newly named National Park, its sheer walls plummeting as much as 2,700 ft. Heading west out of Telluride are the dynamic desert landscapes of southern Utah, with red rock canyons, domes and spires, offering a dramatic contrast to Telluride’s massive and mighty San Juan Mountains. Within a three

hour drive is Moab Utah, a Mecca for Telluride locals and home to the National Parks of Canyonlands and Arches, which provide some of the most visually satisfying landscapes on earth! Moab offers the comforts of a charming small town community with the adventure of world-renown mountain biking and National Park exploration. Beyond Moab are the gems of the National Park service embodied by Zion, Bryce and Capitol Reef, all of which offer superb hiking, canyoneering and truly mind boggling panoramas. It does not get any better than this as the highest example of the simple majesty of mother nature in her wildest display of geologic perfection. Further exploration south and west from Telluride leads you to the spectacular regions of Cedar Mesa and the legendary Grand Gulch, where the “Ancient Ones” created spectacular architecture and petroglyphs, its beauty surrounds you in every canyon you explore. Additionally, Lake Powell (Glen Canyon), is a controversial wonderland brought about by the intentional creation of the Glen Canyon dam. The access into Lake Powell via its waterways and canyons is otherworldly and beautiful! A short distance further west leads to one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the majestic and imposing Grand Canyon. Simply gazing into its abyss is pleasure enough, yet access into and across the canyon is possible either by boat or foot. The above list only scratches the surface, there is so much more to see and explore. Telluride provides a remarkable platform from which to leap into some of the most astounding and inspiring landscapes in the world and yet most people, new to the Telluride community, have the barest inkling of what lay’s beyond the ski slopes that beckoned them here. Telluride possesses all the ingredients that provide for the ultimate lifestyle, both within our happy valley and further afield in our BIG backyard. What are you waiting for?

Situated on the cul-de-sac of a private road with a healthy stand of aspen trees, this 7500 sq ft easy to build on lot represents a great value for the price. Build your mountain getaway in charming Rico, only 25 miles to Telluride.

This special waterfront home on the banks of the Uncompahgre River exudes comfort while uniquely offering 3.38 irrigated acres for the equestrian lover. Recycled beams, hardwood floors, country tile, handpicked granites and expansive glass accentuate this magnificent setting with stunning red rock and river views from virtually every room in the home. A well crafted loafing shed, custom workshop, and water rights from the Ward Ditch make this an impressive offering.

Just west of Telluride, these pristine 3.45 sunny acres include substantial San Miguel River frontage and adjoin BLM land. The property offers a quaint 784 sq ft, fully-equipped, 1-bedroom, 3/4-bathroom cabin with a new shower and tile, a washer/dryer and a new wood-burning stove. Live in the cabin, or convert it to a shop, garage or any alternate out building after you build your dream home.

Newly constructed in 2004 and thoughtfully upgraded with custom finishes reflecting owner’s quality craftsmanship. This 2,000 sq ft residence features 3 bedrooms, 2 & 1 half bathrooms, custom built-ins, a beautiful masonry fireplace, concrete countertops, maple flooring, and antique long leaf pine trim. A detached garage and fenced yard complete this exceptional residence. Tremendous views, abundant sunshine, and less than 25 miles from the Telluride Ski Resort.
