ABSTRACT

Functional changes in children with cerebral palsy undergoing neurodevelopment treatment measured with GMFM and WeeFIM Introduction: During the process of rehabilitation, it is crucial to evaluate outcomes after therapeutic interventions. Objective: To measure the acquisition of functional skills and the perception of changes in parents/caregivers during an intervention program. The intervention based on neuro developmental approach was applied in three sequential cycles of 12 sessions for each intervention throughout a year. Materials and Method: A sample of a girl and seven boys (n = 8); average age 3.8 ± 1.5 years. Classification level of the gross motor function: level II (n = 1); level III (n = 2); level IV (n = 2) and level V (n = 3). GMFM 66 and 88, applied in cycles: initial, intermediate and final; WeeFIM, during the initial and final cycles, and surveys of parents/caregivers during the initial and final cycles. Data were analyzed by means of the Wilcoxon test with p < 0.05. Results: Significant differences were obtained for functional skills acquisition: (a) during the initial-intermediate cycle in: GMFM 88 (p = 0.012); lying and rolling dimension (p = 0.017) and GMFM-66 (p = 0.012); (b) In the initial-final cycle in GMFM-88 (p = 0.050) and lying and rolling (p = 0.028). Conclusion: Changes in the acquisition of functional skills were only measurable with the GMFM of patients that participated in the neuro developmental intervention program. It is suggested that this area continues to be investigated, considering that the results must be cautiously taken due to the size and heterogeneity of the sample. Key words: GMFM, WeeFIM, functional skills, sensorial and motor skills, Bobath.
