Comets Blast OC 99-87

Palomar stamped itself as a serious title threat last Friday night by waltzing away with a 99 to 81 verdict over arch rival Oceanside. It \ •TaS a team victory for the Comets as they blasted the hoop with terrific accuracy. Forwards Joe McCoy and Monte Green paced the attack with 26 and 24 points respecti~y. Don Portis and Jim Peterson each bagged lb markers. Art Clark with 32 points and Mauri Masthay with 28 paced the Spartans. Palomar got off to a smashing start i~ league play by comple~y outclassing arch rival Oceanside JC Friday·. One of the biggest suprises of the evening was the large crowd the Comets drew. The bleacher side of the Vista high school gym was jammed full. This goes to show that a winning team at Palomar will draw a good gate. At the present time student and adult interest are at a new high. Friday(tonight) the Comets host Imperial Valley JC at Vista. Tip off is stated for 8 pm. and Palomar will be favored to pick up i~: second straight league victory having blasted the Arabs once already this year in the Lancaster tournament. A probable starting line up would be Monte Green and Joe Me Coy at forwards, Al Chamberlain in the key, and Don Portis a ~ d George at the guards • Cordy Look for Jim Peterson, Don Broyles, and Jan Berlin to get into the game very early. All three turned in fine performances l ast week.

Saturday (tomorrow night) Palomar will play host to a powerful Palo Verde JC at the Escondido high school gym. Game time is again 8 ~· but the Comets most likely will go into this tilt an underdog by virtue of the Pirates victories over Citrus and Antelope Valley last week. The Palo Verde victory over Antelope Valley was a big upset as the Marauders were favorites to annex the league title this year. If the Comets can get by these two foes this week end they will establish themselves as the team to bea t for the crown and will also lead the league with a perfect record. This could be wishful thinki ng tL:mgh and only time will tell.

The Comets tr ~ veled to San Diego Sta te College to play the State JV and came o ~ f the court on the short end of a hard fought 60-55 score. 1'he Aztec JV squad had four varsity members suited up but Palomar gave them more than they wished to nandle. The Comets led at halftime 32-25 and lost the game in the dyi ng minutes. Joe Me Coy with 14 points and Don Portis with 13 paced Palomar while Hont e Green and George Cordry bucketed 8 nnd 7 rcs pectivly.
