VENEZUELA VENEZUELA TO ADOPT ISDB STANDARD

Venezuela plans to adopt the Japanese digital television standard as it prepares to abandon analogue television. Science Minister Jesse Chacon says Venezuela opted for Japan’s ISDB system after considering other systems used in Europe and China. Chacon says the new system will allow Venezuela’s state-run telecommunications regulator to broaden the airwaves because digital channels take up less bandwidth. Venezuela’s conversion to digital television is expected to be completed within 10 years.

ASIA & PACIFIC ISRAEL 50.000 DTT CONVERTORS SOLD SINCE AUGUST

The NIS 400 Digital Terrestrial Television converters offer high-definition quality viewing of channels 1, 2, 10, 33 and 99 - with no monthly fee involved. According to the Second Broadcast Authority, 50,000 such converters have been sold since the reform was launched in August of this year. Meanwhile, DTH operator HOT is offering its customers that are seeking to unsubscribe and opt for DTT a 20% discount on HOT’s usual subscription fee.

AFRICA KENYA MAJORITY OF KENYANS TO RECEIVE DTT BY APRIL 2010

The government hopes to have migrated about 85% of the country’s population from the current analogue transmission to the digital one by April next year. A pilot program has initiated that will see households in Nairobi and its environs switch to the new technology. DTT will be initially rolled out in Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado and Muranga. The MPEG4 compatible set-top boxes cost between Sh1,500 and Sh5,000. The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation has been licensed to relay digital transmission as from October 31 for Nairobi in its first phase, while the target for full a switchover is June 2012, three years earlier than the worldwide deadline of 2015.

WORLD RODHE & SCHWARZ PRESENTS NEW VHF TRANSMITERS

Rohde & Schwarz is adding a new family of VHF high-power transmitters to its product line. Besides analogue TV, the R&S Nx8500 transmitter family supports the DVB-T, ATSC, ISDB-T/ISDB-TB and DTMB digital TV standards and is already prepared for DVB-T2. In addition, the transmitters cover the T-DMB, DVB-H, MediaFLOTM and ATSC Mobile DTV mobile TV standards. Digital audio broadcasting (DAB+) is also part of the portfolio.

SIANO RECEIVER CHIP SUPPORTS MOBILE TV STANDARDS

Siano Mobile Silicon has launched a multi-standard mobile TV receiver chip, the SMS1230, that supports the major global broadcast mobileTV standards of DVB-T, T-DMB, and ISDB-T, as well as digital (DAB/+) and FM radio. The SMS1230 is a highly-integrated, all-CMOS, single-chip receiver designed for high-end reception of mobile digital TV and radio, at low-power consumption. It enables reception of DVB-T at speeds of 200Km/hour and in ISDB-T (deployed in Japan and Brazil) it exhibits high immunity to analogue and digital interfering signal.

IMAGO AND BREEZE TO LAUNCH DVB-T STB Imago Group is working together with Breeze Technologies to launch the TVium TR-100, a compact set-top box which captures digital TV and radio from a DVB-T feed for TV-over-IP distribution across the network. TVium is the new range of second-generation TV gateways and has been developed to meet a growing IPTV requirement in a variety of installations from hotels and hospitals through to schools, universities and stadiums. The new product has the ability to handle up to 100 streams of TV and radio and can also host CAM modules to enable distribution of encrypted channels.

DTT SET-TOP BOX SHIPMENTS DOWN IN SECOND QUARTER

Market research firm, In-Stat, reported that worldwide DTT STB shipments fell by nearly 35% in Q2 compared to Q1. The shift was driven primarily by falling shipments in the North American market following the analogue broadcast TV shut-off. Plummeting unit shipments in North America were partially offset by growth in the Asian DTT market, which actually grew 50% to over 1.2 million units.
