AT&T EXTENDS ALCATEL DEAL FOR IPTV PLATFORM

Dish Network has increased the number of markets it serves with HD to 150, now serving over 92% of their customers with HD locals. Dish Networks HD claims its local markets count is far higher then that of HD markets offered by DirecTV. DirecTV intends to offer 133 HD cities by the end of the 3rd quarter of 2009.

CABLEVISION OFFERS MORE THAN 100 HD CHANNELS

After launching 27 new high-definition channels in its Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut systems, Cablevision Systems now offers more than 100 channels of free HD now available across its entire service area. The company said approximately 1.6 million of digital cable customers take HD service, up almost 40% from a year ago. Overall, Cablevision had 2.8 million digital video customers as of the end of March.

FIOS OFFERS UP TO 130 HD CHANNELS

With the recent addition of six new HD channels from Viacom’s MTV Networks, FiOS TV customers now have to access 118 to 130 HD channels, depending on the number of local and regional HD channels in the market.

The portfolio brings together TV, High Speed Internet and Voice services all delivered over AT&T’s advanced IP network using Alcatel-Lucent’s Triple Play Service Delivery Architecture. AT&T U-verse services are now offered in 93 markets in 19 states, with more than 1.3 million U-verse TV customers.

VERIZON REACHES 2.5 MILLION IPTV SUBSCRIBERS

Verizon added 300.000 new subscribers to its IPTV service in the past three months, pushing it past the 2.5 million mark. The company maintained the same subscriber growth in its second quarter as in its first. Over the past year Verizon has signed up 1.1 million IPTV customers, around the same as rival AT&T, which trails behind with a total of 1.6 million subscribers.

EPIX HD TO LAUNCH ON FIOS TV

Epix HD has signed an agreement with Verizon to run its channel on Verizon’s FiOS TV network, a distribution deal that could reach as many as 2.5 million households. The 15-month-old joint venture owned by Viacom (Paramount Pictures), Lions Gate Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios will start service exclusively with Verizon on October 1.

SUREWEST TO DELIVER IPTV OVER ADSL2+

SureWest Communications is planning to IPTV over ADSL2+ lines to some 25.000 homes in Sacramento, California. The company already offers IPTV through its FTTH network, but its ADSL2+ customers have so far only had access to SureWest’s voice and data services. The company recently decided to switch from Minerva middleware to Microsoft’s Mediaroom and to use MPEG-4 encoding for video compression.

AT&T ARRIVES TO 1.6 MILLION IPTV SUBSCRIBERS

AT&T has added nearly a quarter of a million new customers to its U-Verse IPTV service in the second quarter of this year. The operator reported a 248.000 net increase in U-verse users in the three months to June 30, bringing the total subscriber base to 1.6 million.

LATIN AMERICA IPTV TO CAPTURE 5.7% OF REGIONAL PAY-TV MARKET

IPTV operators will hold 5.7% of Latin America’s pay-TV subscribers by 2014, according to a new report from Argentinian consultancy Signals Telecom Consulting. Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia (in that order) will add the largest number of IPTV subscribers in the medium term. IPTV services will be available to more than 13 million households in the region by 2014. Investments in the development of IPTV platforms in Latin America are expected to exceed US$ 4.2 billion by 2014.
